Willard “Bill” Hammer was a lifelong resident of Farmer City. He spent many years as the voice of the Farmer City Raceway. He was also a member of the Farmer City Fair Board and served as President in the 1970’s. On the Fair Board, he was in charge of the Tractor Pull and worked to bring in bigger name grandstand acts. The Queen of Country Music, Kitty Wells, performed in the Grandstand, as did Hank Snow. The talent show was started at that time also.

Dad took great pride in Farmer City, the Raceway and the Farmer City Fair. I can still hear him calling the feature race with drivers like Kenny Schrader, Roger Drake and Jack Tyne in the 189. We kids would come sell harness racing programs in the afternoon and would see the Grandstand Show or Stock Car Races that evening. Linda Jo drove in a Powder Puff Demo Derby more than once.
