What is CELTA?

CELTA is an initial qualification #level $% for people with little or no previous teaching

e&perience and opens up a whole world of e&citing teaching opportunities. 'ecause it isawarded by Ca!bridge E()L, part of *niversity of Ca!bridge.

Ho does CELTA relate to TEFL!TES"L?

+TEL+ or +TE()L+ are ter!s often used to describe qualifications for English Language

teachers. CELTA, the !ost widely taken initial TE()L-TEL qualification of its kind in the

world, was previously known as CTELA and the +(A certificate+.

Who is CELTA for?

CELTA is suitable for a wide range of people. /t is the ideal qualification for those who want

to start English language teaching anywhere in the world. /t is also suitable for people who

want a career break or change and for those already teaching English who have no for!al

qualification.

Ho long is the course?

All the courses have a !ini!u! of 012 contact hours. You will also need to dedicate a

!ini!u! of 012 hours for the required reading, research, pre3 and post3session tasks,

assign!ents and lesson preparation. 4TLL( is e!bedded in all the CELTA courses at

E56LC.

What is PTLLS?

4TLL( is a <3credit award designed to provide teachers with initial preparation to teach in the

lifelong learning sector. /t !ay be taken pre3service or at the start of e!ploy!ent in the

sector.

Who is PTLLS for?

4TLL( is for new teachers in the sector or teachers who are unqualified.

What does PTLLS in%ol%e?

The Ca!bridge E()L 4TLL( is e!bedded in the 0123hour CELTA course Candidates

co!plete two additional assess!ents in order to !eet 4TLL( require!ents. /t is possible to

opt out of the 4TLL( award and "ust co!plete the CELTA. The benefits of doing both are

that the CELTA with 4TLL( progra!!e gives candidates a good base fro! which to enter

e!ploy!ent. and candidates with CELTA-4TLL( have already co!pleted so!e of

=TE#E%LL(.

What does CELTA in%ol%e?

You will be assessed throughout the course, with no final e&a!ination. An e&ternal assessor,appointed by Ca!bridge E()L, !oderates each course. There are two co!ponents of

assess!ent?

0. Teaching practice

You will teach for a total of < hours, working with classes at two levels of ability.

Assess!ent is based on your overall perfor!ance at the end of the < hours.

You will co!plete four written assign!ents? one focusing on adult learning@ one on

the language syste! of English@ one on language skills@ and one on classroo!

teaching.

What is the grading?

To be awarded the certificate you !ust pass both co!ponents. There are three grades 4ass,

4ass +'+ and 4ass +A+.

Who recognises CELTA?

CELTA is accepted throughout the world by organisations which e!ploy English Language

teachers. The Ca!bridge CELTA has been accredited by )fqual #the )ffice of the

ualifications and E&a!inations egulation% at Level : on the Bational ualifications

ra!ework for England. Ca!bridge E()L also works with international ELT organisations

to ensure the acceptance of CELTA globally.

A# ' eligile to appl?

You should?

• have a standard of education equivalent to that required for entry into higher

education

•  be aged 12 or over

• have a standard of English which will enable you to teach at a range of levels.

You !ay still be accepted if you do not have for!al qualifications at this level but can

de!onstrate that you would be likely to co!plete the course successfully.

Ho do ' appl?

You need to co!plete an application for! including a full personal state!ent. (election for

interviews is based on this application. /f you are offered an interview you will need to

co!plete a pre3interview Language Awareness task.

What happens at the inter%ie

At the interview you will be given a Language awareness task and a written task to co!plete.

You will also be asked questions on your pre3interview task. /f you are considered suitablefor the course you will be offered a place.
