Definition of automated lubrication technology
• Automated lubrication technology deals with the design and manufacture of equipment and systems to:
- transport, - measure and meter out,
• Lubricants to bearings and lube points to:
- lubricate,- seal,- dissipate heat,- transport particles of wear from bearings, housings

Systems - Centralized Lubrication Systems
Progressive systems
How system works:
• The system consists of a pump, a progressive feeder and a control unit.
• The amount of lubricant delivered by the pump isdivided up by the progressive feeder and fed to thelube points.
• The lubricant is metered out via pistons.
• Each piston can discharge its lubricant only after the preceding one has discharged its.
--> simple monitoring of lubricant delivery

Automated Lubrication Systems
Progressive systems
Applications
• For small and medium-sized machines with the many lube points requiring heavy grease (up to NLGI 2).
• Suitable also for small circulating-oil systems
Difficult: planning, changing metering rates, changing the number of lube points.

Automated Lubrication Systems
Re-circulating lube oil systems
How they work
• Conditioned (de-aerated, dried, filtered, cooled) oil is circulated through the lubrication points.
• The purpose of the system is to lubricate and very often to to cool the lube point.

Lubrication: Grease vs Oil
Pros and cons with grease: Pros and cons with oil:
+ Easy to retain in the housing + Wide operating temperature range
+ Good sealing function in labyrinths + Can be cooled
+ Less costly lubrication system + Can be cleaned
+ Long service life
+ More reliable lubrication
- Cannot be cooled - More costly lubrication system
- Cannot be cleaned - More complicated seals
- Limited temperature range
- Less reliable lubrication
- Leakage of used grease
