Use either of the resources shown here to have an introductory discussion with pupils to gauge their word knowledge and language skills for discussing emotions.

The question and comment prompts are organised into colour coded speech bubbles according to Emotion Works cog concepts. So, as you engage children in conversations about the characters using these different prompts, you will be tapping into their underlying understanding of the different aspects of emotional learning that the Emotion Works programme covers.

Who’s happy / sad / scared / relaxed etc.

Do you know any words for these

Emotion Words Body Sensations Regulation Strategies

Prepare a set of individual character cards from the black and white sheets. Can children find the matching character to the ones on the screen. Can they provide a word for the emotion?

Create an interactive display of characters showing different emotions. Attach with velcro or blutac so they can be named and pointed to or used as props by teachers or pupils alongside stories, songs, play activities, puppet shows etc.

Make 2 sets of character cards to play matching games such as pairs or snap. Alternatively, match with cut up symbols from either the PCS (Boardmaker) set, or Emotion Works own set.

Use the Symbol Pages as a conversation prompt as you look at the different characters in the slide show.

Keep a symbol book or printed pages close to hand at story time and news time to seize opportunities to name emotions that come up in stories or real-life experiences.

Pupils can provide responses by looking and pointing at the pictures, agreeing with your suggestions, or naming a word for themselves.

Using the Character Resource and Foundation Symbol Sets for developing Emotion Word vocabularyTo focus on 1 emotion category at a time…Use printed out slides, symbols and character cut outs to create a page in a floorbook or wall display with children’s contributions, quotes and observations.

Focusing in on an emotion category like this will naturally provide opportunities to talk about the other ‘Cog’ concepts we focus on in Emotion Works (Body Sensations, Emotion Triggers, Behaviours and Regulation Strategies). See the next page to see how to also develop foundation language for those cogs.

Using the Character Resource and Foundation Symbol Sets for developing vocabulary across all Cog ConceptsWhen focusing on one emotion category at a time in floorbook work or interactive wall displays, these can be expanded over time to include pictures, symbols, photos, observations and children’s comments using the language of the other starter cog concepts as follows…

relaxed

What makes me feel relaxed, calm or peaceful

How it feels inside my body

How I show I’m feeling relaxed, calm or peaceful

If the emotion being explored is an uncomfortable one, such as anger, fear or sadness, then you would also bring up and explore the Regulation side of understanding emotions.

This will relate to the yellow cog / Emotion Triggers concept

This will relate to the red cog / Body Sensations concept

This will relate to the green cog / Emotion Behaviours concept

When I feel sad I can…

This will relate to the blue cog / Regulation Strategies concept

Word learning using symbols is a very important feature of the Emotion Works approach for Early Level children.

We hope you find the resources helpful.

Emotion Works own symbols and PCS (Boardmaker) symbols are available to mix and match.
