This 18-metre high cascade is a family favourite on the waterfall tour. Located just outside the city of Owen Sound, you can easily park at the Inglis Falls Conservation Area for $5 a day. On-site picnic shelters, bathrooms and hiking trails make this an excellent spot to spend a few hours with your family. The falls are visible from a viewing deck that’s an easy 2-minute walk from your car on the West side or from a lookout behind the Escarpment Centre on the East side. Alternately, you can hike down further below the West side viewing deck on the Bruce Trail. This section is rocky and suitable for older children. Take some time to visit Grey Roots Museum and Archives just around the corner on Grey Road 18 or Harrison Park just inside the city limits.

You may well have visited Harrison Park without even knowing Weavers Creek Falls was nestled with it’s 40-hectares of green space. Weavers Creek is two falls in one—a miniature plunge falls flanked by two cascading falls. Located by the public pool in Harrison Park, kids can easily hike the 300-metre boardwalk in to the falls. The falls themselves are located on private property, please advise children to stay on parkland. This unique Harrison Park location makes this a great family waterfall. Enjoy the parks extensive playgrounds then grab an ice cream and some takeout from the Harrison Park Inn. Feed the ducks and visit the parks collection of unique birds. Why not make it a weekend by camping at one of the park’s over 100 full-service campsites?

There’s something truly refreshing about visiting a waterfall. Whether it’s the sound of rushing water, the heart pounding hike to the falls, the joy of taking in the view with your little ones or the pictures you post to social media after your visit, waterfalls make excellent summer destinations for families.

Grey County is home to 10 waterfalls dotted across the landscape as our rivers plunge over the Niagara Escarpment. We’ve selected a few waterfalls that offer easy hikes, safe access and nearby points of interest for a true family adventure.

As with any outdoor activity with children, you’ll need to set ground rules before you go. Explain the

importance of staying on the trail, of keeping well back from the Escarpment’s edge and of listening —with no questions asked—to the instructions of parents. Stop means stop right now when visiting a waterfall.

Armed with sturdy hiking shoes, a bag full of snacks and drinks, your GPS or phone, a camera and the Grey County Waterfall Tour brochure, you’ll be ready to explore.

Tucked away just off Grey Road 13 in the village of Eugenia, historic Eugenia Falls is an impressive sight. While water flow can be slower during the summer months, this waterfalls 30-metre plunge into the Cuckoo Valley is always beautiful. The Bruce Trail runs past the falls, which are just a short hike from the Grey Sauble Conservation Authority parking lot. You can extend your hike North or South off the falls on the Bruce Trail. While in Eugenia, grab some ice cream or lunch at the Eugenia Falls Emporium, take a swim at the beach by the Lake Eugenia boat launch or cycle the causeway that divides this manmade lake.

If you’re heading to the Beaver Valley or Blue Mountain area for the weekend, surprise the family with a quick stop at Hoggs Falls. This remote falls is actually a super short hike from the parking lot on Lower Valley Road, a few quick turns off Grey Road 4 near Flesherton. A visit to Hoggs Falls is a true wilderness experience. There are no walls or fences separating you from the falls so this is a good choice for older children or those you trust to follow safety instructions. With that said, the short Bruce Trail hike and the rewarding view may be just the thing to kick start your child’s love of the great outdoors!
