“One generation shall commend your works to another, and shall declare your mighty acts.”

Psalm 145:4

My dear family in Christ, as we begin our long awaited summer activities, I desire to place before

you one more time our Sunday School theme from this past year (Psalm 145:4). The reason is because there is one thing which we all have in common during this time of year and that is ‘busyness.’ We fill our lives with activities; enjoying God’s creation by taking vacations, playing outside, tending to our homes, gathering together and the like.

God takes great joy in watching us enjoy His creation and our gathering together. We, as sinful humans though, are apt to get too wrapped up in God’s creation and find ourselves worshipping the created rather than the Creator. We commend (read: praise) our activities, the weather, the joys we experience to others, but seldom commend our God; forgetting it is He who created it all and gave it to us and desires to receive our praise.

As we are all sure to say this summer, we are too busy. I myself have found it works better if I mentally say “I am prioritizing this over that” rather than saying “I’m too busy.” When I begin to use the word ‘prioritize’ then my heart and my head sync up. It’s much harder to say ‘I am prioritizing work over my kids’ than it is to say ‘I’m too busy’ or ‘I’m prioritizing my game over worship’ than to say ‘I’m too busy for worship.’ Saying those words helps reveal what it is I truly desire to do.

So, is commending God’s works to the next generation a priority for us? Hopefully it is! Now, if you’re wondering how, well, I’ve got wonderful news for you! To “commend [God’s] works to the next generation” begins in the home by telling your family what God has done, both in the Bible and in our own lives. It extends out to commenting on all that God has blessed us with. It includes reminding each other of God’s gracious work and the joy He’s given to us in our vocations as we do all to the glory of His name. We talk about Him when we sit, walk, rise up and lay down – in all that we do we speak His praises for others to hear.

From there it goes into worship as we gather together and receive God’s gifts of forgiveness and salvation, responding in words of praise and adoration. As we worship with our children, they learn how to commend God also. For in worship we are actively commending God’s works to one another. However, if you find your schedule is truly too full each weekend with other priorities, don’t forget that you can now join us Wednesday evenings at 7:00pm for worship also! I look forward to commending God to the next generation each week with you.

The 23rd Psalm is one of our more familiar Psalms, memorized by many of us. It is amazing to me how comforting it is, and how phrases of it jump out to me depending upon my circumstances. For example, “The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want.” When I feel like I am lacking in something, that verse will come to my mind and it assures me that I have everything I need. Another verse, “He restores my soul,” kind-ly and gently reminds me that I cannot fix my-self, (though I certainly keep trying!) The key word here is He. HE restores my soul. (ie. my mind, my will and my emotions.) Do you try to get control of your choices, or emotions or thoughts? I know I do! So how do we give that up? The answer is in the next verse: “He leads me in paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.” He guides me along the right path, and as I learn how to lean on Him He gets the cred-it and the glory because I begin to realize that apart from Him I can do nothing. “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me.” For a child of God, death is an ever-present reality that we will not pass through alone. He will be with us at that time, there is nothing to fear. That gives me comfort since death is an enemy it will not hurt me, God will protect me! It also comforts me to know that when those I love are nearing death they are not alone.

Have you memorized the 23rd Psalm? If not, I highly recommend it! If you have

memorized it, why not recite it often!

BOOK reMARKS A recent addition to our library is June’s Book of the Month selection. JUNGLE PILOT, by Russell T. Hitt is “the story of the life and witness of Nate Saint, martyred (along with four other missionaries) in 1955 in Ecuador. Some of this story is Nate’s own words, gleaned from letters. Found in the lat-ter pages is the Epilogue where you can read the gripping story of the days after their death. Then Stephen Saint, Nate’s son, continues the story.
