Family Support Services

UCP Family Support Services—What’s That?

Family Support Services offers support for parents, siblings, and extended family members of individuals with disabilities up to age 21. Not everyone has the same support needs. Therefore, we provide a continuum of support options to meet the diverse needs of the whole family. The services and supports we offer include:

Advocacy and Support

We help families navigate the special education, Mental Health/Intellectual Disability, medical, and/or behavioral health systems. We help parents and guardians understand their legal rights and what supports and services may be available for their children, empowering them to become effective advocates on behalf of their children.

Family Activities

We host social activities that provide opportunities for families of children with disabilities to get together for fun, fellowship, and informal support in a relaxing atmosphere. Activities include: a pool party, fun fair, bowling, and craft and movie nights. To receive email updates of upcoming activities, email Roxanne at [email protected] and ask to be added to the Family Services email group. Be sure to include your name and the email address you would like us to use.

Workshops and Training

We offer workshops on topics related to raising a child with a disabilities. Topics may include: special education regulations, estate planning, behavioral intervention, stress management, and family dynamics.

Sibshops

We offer siblings of children with disabilities an opportunity to share support and information in a fun, recreational setting. Eight sessions are held per year for children (ages 6-12) and six sessions per year for teens (ages 12 and older).

Lending Library

Our resource library has over 1,700 books, videos, DVDs, specialty catalogs, and magazines available for loan free of charge. Topics include: disability specific information, sibling issues, communication, behavior, and potty training, and more!

Information and Referral

Our staff are parents of children with disabilities, therefore we bring years of both personal and professional experience with the vast network of human service offerings available in Central PA. We can assist in coordinating a variety of services and identifying additional resources as needed.

UCP/SchmidtKramer 27th Annual Golf Tournament

Monday August 5, 2013 at the Carlisle Country Club

Join us for some great golf...on a great course...for a great cause!

Our Golf Tournament will celebrate its 27th Anniversary this year at the Carlisle Country Club, Carlisle on Monday, August 5, 2013. The UCP/SchmidtKramer Golf Tournament is our annual charity golf outing sponsored by SchmidtKramer. The event, hosted by Chuck Schmidt, Gerry Kramer, and Scott Cooper, features 18 holes of golf with prizes, buffet lunch and dinner, and live and silent auctions. Our 2013 Honorary Co-Chairs Matthew LeCroy, Manager and Paul Menhart, Pitching Coach of the Harrisburg Senators will join us for the day. There are several ways to join in the camaraderie and help advance UCP’s goal of seeing every individual—no matter what their age or ability—grow and develop to their full potential: join the Golf Committee, become a sponsor or advertiser, make an in-kind or monetary donation, and of course, attend the event! For more information, contact the Community Relations Coordinator, [email protected] or 717-975-0611.

The proceeds from the Golf Tournament benefit the Growth Fund of the UCP Foundation of Central PA.

The Growth Fund is established to support our mission of assisting infants, children, youth, and adults with disabilities, and

their families to achieve their goals of development, growth, independence, and full citizenship.
