On October 14, 2011 the Family Resource Center (FRC) had its official opening and open house! Among those in attendance were Valley College President Sue Carleo, LACCD Board Trustees Mona Field and Scott J. Svonkin, LAVC Foundation President Bob Oberstein and Vice President Andrea Gold-

berg Kaufman.

In 2008, JH Snyder company donated $1.5 million to the LAVC Foundation to build a

new FRC facility on the north end of campus adjacent to the Child Development Center. The FRC provides education and professional development activities to build the early childhood workforce. Activities are designed to support high school students through those completing their Master’s Degree in

Child Development.

The center is environmentally friendly and

contains classrooms and offices.

Retired LAVC Chemistry Professor Joe Nordman made a donation of $19,000 to the Foundation for the Joseph

Nordmann Endowment.

The endowment was established in 2004 and it was initially used to pro-vide honorarium to Chemistry Depart-

ment student assistants.

Nordmann has been a long time supporter of the Foundation and the endowment. He re-cently extended the support for the Biology Department’s

student assistants.

Joseph Steinberg Elected to Foundation Board

Joseph Steinberg was elected to the Foundation’s Board of Directors in August 2011. He is a Certified Financial Planner and Vice President of Invest-

ments at Crowell Weedon & Company.

“We are happy to have Joe join our Board and contribute his ideas and talent to help the Foundation grow” said Founda-

tion President Bob Oberstein.

Steinberg is also involved with The Ex-

ecutives, Temple Beth Hillel, and The Moriah Society.

LA UP Supports the Family Resource Center for a Fifth Year!

For a fifth year, Los Angeles Universal Preschool (LAUP), a non-profit organization, will award up to $320,000 to the Los Angeles Valley College Family Resource Center (FRC). LAUP, a subsidiary of First 5, is charged with making high quality preschool available to

every 4-year old in Los Angeles County by 2014.

The grant awarded to the FRC will support a program called Career & Academic Success

Team (CAST). The focus of CAST is to build workforce in early childhood care.

On the national and local level, there are critical problems affecting the quality of infant and toddler care program in society today because there are not enough infant and tod-dler care programs or caregivers. The problem is exacerbated for children with special needs. There is also a very high turnover rate of early childhood teachers who work with

this age group. CAST will work to address these problems.

The LAVC Foundation will receive the grant and will be the fiscal agent. Since the initial

grant back in 2007, LAUP will have awarded a total of $1.4 million to the FRC.

National Philanthropy Day Honors Foundation’s Executive Director and Alumnus

On November 3, 2011, the San Fernando Valley Chapter of the Asso-ciation of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) recognized LAVC Founda-tion Executive Director Raul Castillo as the Outstanding Professional of the year. Castillo, who has been with the Foundation for ten years, was recognized for the organization’s growth and his efficient man-

agement style.

Also recognized was LAVC alumnus Paul Sabolic who was recognized as Outstanding Philanthropist. Sabolic is chair of the LAVC Athletic Hall of Fame (HOF) who raised nearly $150,000 to establish and produce. He also help establish the Athletic Endowment Advisory

Board which is currently conducting a campaign to raise $100,000.

The AFP gives the awards annually to coincide with National Philan-thropy Day, recognized officially on Nov. 15. The AFP highlights con-tributions in philanthropy. It recognizes professionals who make it their life's work to raise money for worthwhile causes as well as do-

The Foundation partnered with the Women’s Basketball team to raise funds for the Athletic Endowment and the Women’s team. A ticket drawing was held on November 19 at the Women’s game versus Long Beach City. Prizes that included a Lake Arrowhead get away, gift baskets, King’s hockey tickets, and so much more were given to the lucky winners. The ticket sales actually began October 1, 2011 at the annual alumni barbecue and football game. All together,

$2,000 was raised.

LAVC Donor Benches Proving to be a Success!

Donor benches were made available almost a year ago to allow one to honor a family, friend, loved one or event with a bench donation. So called “Back Benches” have been the most popular and have already sold out pending installation of more of them on campus. Cement benches without a back are still available and recently added are sitting areas adjacent to the

Student Services Building.

$9,000 has been raised for the en-dowment from those who have named

benches.

These benches and seating areas have already been placed and in-stalled on campus. Donors may select their benches on a first come first serve basis. Please contact the Los Angeles Valley College Foundation to request a Donor Bench form or to find out locations of benches and which are still available for naming. Just call

Legacy Society

Alumnus Bob Keller Bob Keller Bob Keller Bob Keller is a realtor in Canyon Country and also serves as a City Council-man in the Santa Clarita Valley. He at-tended Valley College in 1964 and was later drafted and fought in the Vietnam War. As a councilman, he believes that it is important to listen to his constituents. He does so at a Coco’s Restaurant!

Dr. Louis Vaccaro Dr. Louis Vaccaro Dr. Louis Vaccaro Dr. Louis Vaccaro is a member of the LAVC Pioneer Class (1949) which had 250 stu-dents. He played on the first football team and track team. After service in the Korean War, Vaccaro attended USC. His career has been all academics spanning 40 years. He has served as president of six colleges and universities and has led hundreds of inter-national students to higher education in the United States. He recently completed his eight book, a memoir titled, “Around the Corner: From Shoeshine Boy to College President.” Currently residing in upstate New York, Vaccaro is planning a trip to Indonesia and China for his third Fulbright assignment.
