Hello and a big welcome to the first issue of The Family Grapevine for East & South Notts.

I have been publishing a Family Grapevine for families in West Notts for over four years and many of you have seen it and asked, ‘Where’s ours?!’ ...so here it is! I really hope you enjoy reading the East & South Notts Family Grapevine and find it useful and full of great ideas for you and your family. There are lots of things to do and fantastic places to go and even some creative ideas

for those ‘quieter’ days at home!

Summer Reading Challenge 2012Every year, thousands of families all over the country are involved in the UK’s biggest reading event for children aged 4-11yrs in libraries, the Summer Reading Challenge, coordinated by The Reading Agency. In 2012, the Challenge is called Story Lab.The aim of the challenge is to get children to read six books from their library during the summer holidays. Everyone who signs up for the Summer Reading Challenge can keep track of the books they read and receive encouragement to keep reading all summer long. It’s great fun for kids and what’s more, it doesn’t cost a penny to join. Just enrol at your local library at the beginning of the summer holidays and choose your books! Need things for the kids to do the school holidays? We are here to help!

Make it a summer to remember...without spending a fortune!

Check our What’s On pages - and plan days out, there are lots of things on over the summer and many of them are FREE or low cost! Write them in the diary so you don’t forget!

Get ‘stuff’ together! - collect interesting craft materials boxes, tubes, A4 white paper, tissue paper, card and wrapping papers, crayons, felt tips, paint, glue/masking tape, fabrics, ribbon, googly eyes, pipe cleaners, magazines etc. Charity shops and car boots are good places to try and they’re great for dressing up clothes, cheap toys and pocket-money shopping!

Sunny days - kids love picnics, whether its in the garden, local park or out in the country they make an ordinary day special. Make a den in the garden using sheets and chairs or put up a small tent if you have one...great places for picnics! Paddling pools, sprinklers and sandpits are always popular (drought willing!) but younger children are often

as happy with a washing up bowl of water, some plastic beakers and a decorating brush to ‘paint’ the walls and paths. Set up a mini trim trail with low jumps, old duvets to crawl under and obstacles to run round or make mini jumps by balancing garden canes for a ‘gymkana’ for the pony-mad ones! Great days outdoors can be remembered by collecting twigs, feathers, grasses, stones etc and making a collage, picture or mobile from a coat hanger or stick later. Near a fast stream? Play a game of ‘Pooh Sticks’! Throw twigs in and see which one gets to a given point fi rst...brilliant if you can stand on a bridge and watch them go underneath and reappear!

Rainy days - get the wellies on andjump in puddles! Older children could make a ‘weather station’ with a ruler in a clear container and record daily rainfall on a graph. Make an indoor denusing a sheet over the table or chairs, a box can become a bed for a doll, acooker or table and they’ll create a great place for role play, to play with toys and games or for a picnic! Get the dressing up box out with all those bright, frilly and unusual charity shop fi nds! Together you can make cakes, decorate biscuits with dribbly icing and favourite sweets, create a jelly with added fruit, add pizza topping to pre-made bases or freeze squash, fruit juice or smoothies into ice lollies (kids love these and its worth buying

the plastic moulds). Get crafty; cut up or rip magazine pictures and tissue and shiny papers into squares or get together pasta shapes, outdoor fi nds and interesting bits for collages or mosaics; provide boxes, tubes , coloured and shiny papers, glue and felt tips for box models; get the paints out and make paperweights with painted and varnished pebbles, faces on paper plates and add some woolly hair or paint fl owers, cut them out and push a bendy straw through the centre and crunch the paper forward a little.Mini books made with folded A4 paper and ribbon or pipe cleaner can be secret diaries, holiday journals or a book about favourite things. Magazines and the internet are great resources for pictures.

I started learning French at infant school and went on to graduate with a degree in French and Spanish in 1997. After getting married and having two children I started working for Little Linguists in 2010, teaching in local nurseries and after-school clubs. When my youngest child started school last year I decided to set up my own franchise of Little Linguists full-time. The franchise has got off to a great start, with many new nursery classes being added and the Spanish after-school groups at Beeston Library on Tuesday still going strong, with infants at 4pm and juniors at 5pm.Fun & interaction play a huge part in the classes. Children get as much enjoyment from learning a new language as I do teaching it. I love my job especially when I arrive at nursery to chants of, “Hurray it’s the Spanish / French teacher!”

I have just celebrated my fi rst year as MamaBabyBliss Associate Teacher. I run 8 baby and toddler yoga and massage classes a week plus daddy workshops and pamper parties. I am now delivering Teacher Training Courses and recruiting more MBB teachers in the area.

I will never be a millionairess with this as my vision and I have probably never worked harder in my life.Having your own business is all consuming, but this is still a career which I can fi t round my family who are always my priority. When my son Thomas started to walk, buying him shoes proved to be a nightmare. He was an E-fi tting, not uncommon, but I frequently experienced poor fi tting & lack of choice.I felt there was a real gap in the market as not all width fi ttings were catered for on the high street. Looking for a more rewarding career, I decided to do some research into children’s foot health, fi tting and alternative brands. Two years later & heavily pregnant with Hannah, I found my fi rst premises in Beeston. Early Years ChildcareDay nurseries, nursery schools, pre-schools, childminders – childcare comes in all shapes and sizes! Whether you’re going back to work and need daycare or just want your child to socialise and benefi t from the early years activities and education on off er, making the right choice for you and your child can be daunting. Here is our guide to help you fi nd the right childcare for you.

Free early education for 3 and 4 year oldsAll three and four year olds are entitled to 15 hours of free early education for 38 weeks of the year. This applies until they reach school age (the Septemberbefore their 5th birthday). Free early education places are available at a range of early years settings including nursery schools and classes, children’s centres, day nurseries, playgroups and pre-schools and childminders.For more information contact your nearest Children’s Centre, the Family Information Service or talk to your childcare provider.

Help with costsMost families are entitled to help with childcare costs through Tax Credits and in certain circumstances further assistance is available. For more information visit your local children’s centre or for online help visit www.direct.gov.uk/parents/childcare or www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/childcare (the Sure Start guide available here ‘Looking for Childcare’ is very helpful)

Choosing a childcare providerEntrusting a stranger with your child is a big step, so before you choose a provider you may want to consider the following tips:. decide on the type of childcare that you feel best suits your child and your family circumstances. start looking early and give yourself plenty of time to choose – popular settings often have waiting lists. ask other parents for recommendations. make appointments to visit two or three providers to compare what’s on offer and get a feel for the settings and staff. think about your child’s personality and interests – what environment will they prefer?. check opening times, holiday dates, costs and what happens should your child be ill

Things to look forThe following checklist may come in handy when choosing a childcare provider:. does the childcare setting have a friendly feel?. is it clean, well light and ventilated, furnished appropriately and big enough for children to be active indoors and outdoors?. are there places where the children can rest?. are the toys and activities interesting, varied and suitable for different ages, abilities and needs?. do the children look happy?. what food and drink is provided?. do the carers have a good relationship with the children and talk to them in a way that interests and encourages them?. who can you talk to about your child’s progress or any concerns?. are there plenty of children of your child’s age?. are the provider and carers Ofsted registered?. are there enough staff to keep an eye on all children? (at least one member of staff for every eight children aged three to fi ve). do the staff manage behaviour appropriately? (there should be a written policy for you to see). what training and experience do the carers have?. do the carers know fi rst aid?. safety - what happens in an emergency?. does the provider have a Health & Safety policy?. are the premises secure? (can people just walk in?)

Day nurseriesMost day nurseries are open 8am-6pm and are a good option for working parents. They offer continuity of care up to 5yrs, many take babies from 6-8 weeks and some offer a school drop off and pick up service with local schools along with before and after school care. The day follows structured activities interspersed with naps, meals and outdoor play. Your child doesn’t have to stay all day or go every day but you do need to discuss and book your child’s place for the days and times you need well in advance. Some nurseries are very popular and it can be diffi cult to get a place.

Nursery schoolsNursery schools are often more formal in the way they structure sessions. They usually take children from 2.5-3 years and provide a grounding for starting school. Most require children to attend either 5 morning or 5 afternoon sessions during term time and although often smaller scale and more personal, might not be quite so convenient for working families.

Nursery classes in schools The fi rst step in ‘real’ school life, these can be good for children who are ready for school and structured, educational play. They are convenient if you already have siblings at the school, but sessions are usually 5 mornings or 5 afternoons and term time only which again may not be practical. Nursery classes in independent schools are more likely to offer full school-day sessions but nursery classes attached to state schools are free. It’s important to remember that attending a school nursery does not automatically guarantee a school place.

Pre-schools and playgroupsPlaygroups usually take children from 2.5yrs for morning or afternoon sessions with some also running lunch clubs. Most are term-time only and are a fl exible childcare option. They offer a sociable learning environment where children can play, learn and have fun. Playgroups have a varied mix of toys, games and activities and some have an outdoor area. Their small-scale settings can be less daunting for shy children. They are usually excellent value for money as they tend to be not-for-profi t organisations.

Montessori & Steiner nurseries and schoolsMontessori and Steiner teaching is based on methods which foster and guide children’s in-built curiosity for learning using sensory materials to provide intellectual, physical and psychological stimuli. They don’t introduce formal education before the age of six, preferring to concentrate on learning through creative play. They offer a more holistic approach to learning for those seeking an alternative form of education

Workplace nurseries Workplace nurseries provide full or part-time childcare and can offer a very convenient childcare solution. Demand can be high.

Nannies &Childminders Nannies usually look after your child in your home while childminders provide care for a small number of children in their own homes. They offer fl exible and more ‘homely’ childcare for all ages from babies to the school run.
