Whatever they thought of it, I hope that they are talking about it and that it made a lasting impression. Here is what one parent said to us: “Initially we were nervous to let our child out of the protective bubble of the family, but it was an experience to be remembered forever along with the responsibility learned while being out there and far from home.” I would like to thank the teachers and parents who accompanied the students on this adventure. You helped to make it a fun, challenging yet safe experience. On behalf of the school I offer our thanks to Claire Edmondson who completed her term as Chairperson of the Family and Friends association. She has coordinated many activities during her long period on the committee and many students have benefitted and had a great deal of fun as a result. Sieumuoi Hancock has picked up the role of Chairperson of the committee. Thanks to her and to Jacquie Lindsay who is continuing as Secretary. They need some support so please look out for their communications and get involved wherever you can. It’s a great way to meet new people and benefit children at the same time. MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL Year 6 students have just had the ‘Camp’ experience. Whatever they thought of it, I hope that they are talking about it and that it made a lasting impression. Here is what one parent said to us:

Howick Schools Cluster Chess Tournament We had two more schools join us for the Howick Schools Cluster Chess tournament this year, making a total of 7 schools, with a total of nearly a 100 children.

Point View had 4 teams entered and we came FIRST!

This means we get to choose our top 4 players to represent us in the Regionals and then hopefully to the Nationals tournaments.

While all 18 players played exceptionally well, two students stood out;

Annika Wang from Room 19 was the best overall girl player and ranked 1st overall.

Lucas Wang from Room 25 came in third best player overall.

Huge CONGRATULATIONS to all the players!

Year 6 Camp in the eyes of the campers Camp Blog Day 1 Wow today was the best, we had a great time doing top town games and free choosing time. On the bus it was a bit hot everyone was happy to finally get off the bus and have a break at Gordonton. You would definitely know that it was autumn because there were leaves everywhere. Lots of the kids were throwing them up in the air and letting them fall onto their heads. Finally we appeared at Finlay Park it was so exciting. There were amazing activities prepared around the field and the camp. Finlay Park has been a great start for all Year 6 students and parents. Smiles have spread across everyone’s faces as they completed the activities. The activities included loads of teamwork and cooperation, everyone settled in their cabins well and some students had early showers after the fun-packed activities. Afternoon tea and dinner at Finlay Park was a mouth-watering meal for everyone. Everyone also had for dessert vanilla ice-cream in a cone. The first day at Finlay Park was amazing and adventurous. By Portia Garratt, Daniel Chan, Dominic Iugan Camp Blog Day 2 “Ahh the water” it's so cold that's the sound when some of the kids were doing Bush Tech and getting soaked in water, but thankfully we a toasted marshmallow after and warmed up with a nice hot fire that

we had to make. Lots of kids come back super dooper muddy because you guessed it, animal survival. There was just one dad that was the hunter in the game and was throwing mud and it got everywhere, at least everyone had a blast. Wow you do not even know how wet people got in kayaking they were soaked and cold. Some people even capsized it was hilarious, but even if they do that they are still happy. Lunch was so yum we all had pizza. They were all still homemade. And do not get me started on dinner it was so yummy. We had chicken and bacon pasta and some vegetables everyone mostly went back for seconds. Desert was a chocolate pudding with cream.

The 2nd day of camp was AWESOME! We started the day off by doing some jump jam. Then we had breakfast, and the options were cereal, bake beans, toast and porridge. My group’s first

activity was Go Karts/Adventure trail. That was exciting and after I completed I felt brave. Animal survival was fun, I got really muddy. I was a kiwi and lost all my lives. It was good to see that Mr Wright was able to join us but he didn't catch me. At the end of it we jumped off the barge into the lake to clean ourselves down. It was freezing and as soon as I touched the water I felt really heavy. My favourite was the hydroslide at free choosing time.

Camp Blog Day 3 Moving through the muddy ground and ducking under tree branches sticking out of tall trees, we’ve had another successful day at Finlay Park which everyone enjoyed. We were hiding away from the ‘hunter’ with a handful of mud. Also, for animal survival if you are at the bottom of the food chain you needed to stay away from stoats, wild cats, wild pigs, goats, deers, wild dogs and especially, the hunter and the elements, fire, floods, disease that will also be dangerous.

You might have heard of the hydroslide, it is a very fast moving slide, it is nearly as fast as a great white shark! That is fast! The hydroslide has loads of water sliding down the slide and goes faster than you think. There is also a waterslide, which is very slippery. It has around two bottles of detergent and quite a lot of water.

A Voluntary Job Worth Doing! Have you a spare hour a week to help a former adult refugee or

migrant with English for everyday life?

English Language Partners Auckland South supports former refugees and migrants settle in New Zealand. We help to bridge the barriers of fear, loneliness and isolation they face living in a new country. We train volunteer tutors to help people who cannot get to classes to learn English. After attending a short training course you will be matched with a learner who wants to learn English. The tutor helps the learner for an hour a week with the everyday English they need to be able to function in New Zealand society. A tutor may start with teaching a learner how to fill out forms or how to make an appointment to go to the doctor, all very “real -life” situations. At the same time you are teaching about New Zealand culture. Learners always appreciate the time and friendship a volunteer tutor provides. All tutors are well-supported with resources and a workshop each term for new ideas. The next course starts on Friday 24 May 2019: 9:30am – 2:00pm

FARM COVE INTERMEDIATE

Pestival We invite you, your parents and friends to an evening to learn why and how you can be pest trapping in your backyards! Our urban environment is an important habitat for birds, insects and reptiles. They can only thrive if pest numbers are low. On this evening, Howick Local Board and Auckland Council will provide:

• A free rat trap for you to take home to use in your backyard for the duration of the project • A demonstration of how to set/unset the traps and give you a chance to practice • Advice on placing traps at home and disposal of the pests caught • Instructions on how to record your pest programme data

This school pest free project is a first in Auckland. You will pilot what is to be a city wide collaborative effort towards the vision of Pest Free Auckland and help bring back biodiversity to your gardens!
