1968 This was a difficult visit. We were starving with no child support or alimony from Hal. I was trying to decide whether to work inEurope or return to Berkeley for the Doctorate. My aunt, with my Power of Attorney, quit-claimed our house to Hal. I decided to return so Hal would see his sons. My father did take us to Greece.

Many hours laterfinding Richard at the police station froma note on the car, we finally meet at ‘TheGreat American Disaster’ in Chelsea forhamburgers. This is Auntie Florence at Ascot.

Apart from my annual visits to my father while he was dying in Rome and on shortresearch visits, I next came to Europe, 1987-1988, on a year’s Sabbatical Fellowship, Then returned for good in 1993, having taken early retirement as Professor Emerita,, my children grown and having children of their own in turn. I was able to visit them each year, except after 9/11 when I was blocked for five years because I was on a European, not American passport.
