Adopting with Hampshire County CouncilThis year’s National Adoption Week, taking place 2-9 November is particularly relevant this year as new rules have just been introduced to speed up the adoption system and ensure more children get a stable loving home without delay. Hampshire County Council is continually looking for more adoptive parents to provide caring homes for Hampshire children. They are particularly looking for people who have experience of working with children and who understand the difficulties that children who need adoptive families may face. They also ask that you have a spare bedroom and the commitment to care for a child for the rest of their life. Much like children, adoptive families come in all shapes and sizes. They only ask that you lead a child-friendly lifestyle and have the time and space for a child. Adoption is a life-long journey and HCC provide a range of support as and when you might need it. To find out more contact the recruitment team on 0845 6035620 or visit www.hants.gov.uk/adoption

Taking place 4 - 21 November, this three-week festival is packed with free screenings and workshops for ages 5-19, with highlights including exclusive premieres and previews of new feature films, workshops, special events and Q&A sessions with industry experts, accompanied by innovative teaching resources. Highlighting both the educational power of film and the magic of cinema, the festival is open to schools, parents and youth groups and offers a wealth of opportunities for a fun and stimulating day out. The event hopes to build on the success of last year’s festival, which saw over 200,000 young people attending over 1,300 special screenings and events across the UK.It is a fantastic opportunity to be able to bring young people to cinemas that they wouldn’t otherwise visit and have a collective experience that they can then take back to the classroom to discuss.Book now at www.intofilm.org/festival

Positive Birth MovementSet up less than 2 years ago by mum and writer Milli Hill, The Positive Birth Movement has rapidly grown and now boasts over 150 groups in the UK. Positive Birth Groups are completely free to attend and are a place for all pregnant women - regardless of their background, experience or choices - to come together and share experiences, thoughts, feelings and insight about childbirth. Many are run by birth professionals such as doulas or midwives, while others are organised by women who are simply passionate about birth as a positive experience. Positive Birth Groups aim to be a helpful part of pregnancy, a warm and welcoming place to hear stories and ideas. Consider what you really want from your childbirth experience, learn about your rights and choices, and challenge any fears or negative expectations you might have.

Winchester Christmas Market and Ice rink returns for a 9th yearWith skating, carols and a market full of seasonal goodies, there is something for everyone at Winchester this Christmas.

The Winchester Christmas market inspired by traditional German markets is a firm favourite with shoppers. With its rows of attractive wooden chalets each carefully selected for the quality of their products, it’s the perfect place to come for that special present.

Many of the stalls specialise in British crafts with items ranging from painted wooden toys to handmade jewellery and ceramics. And for those who have already done their Christmas shopping, this is a wonderful place to soak up some festive atmosphere. Browse the various stalls, admire the dramatic cathedral backdrop and take in the general pre-Christmas excitement while treating yourself to seasonal favourites such as mulled wine, mince pies or stollen.

At the heart of the market is the open-air real ice rink. A must for children and adults alike, it’s a great place to enjoy some winter family fun. The team of trained ice stewards means that even the most nervous beginner can safely try out their skills while the size of the rink allows more confident skaters to enjoy the exhilaration of skating in such a unique setting. The most popular sessions are after dark when the flood-lit cathedral and bright lights of the market create a magical, festive atmosphere. Each session lasts one hour, with ten minutes allocated for putting on the skates and approximately 50 minutes on the ice.www.winchester-cathedral.org.uk

Homework...HELP!By Sarah Butters

Why is homework so important?Homework encourages independent learning skills and backs up what has been learnt in the classroom. It shows both teachers and parents what a child is capable of and can also highlight what they haven’t understood during the school day.

How much homework should my child be getting? It depends on the age of your child, however here is a rough guide to the amount of homework your child should be receiving. Reception: 30 minutes a weekYears 1 & 2: One hour a weekYears 3 & 4: 90 minutes a weekYears 5 & 6: 30 minutes a dayYears 7 & 8: Up to 90 minutes a day

Should I be helping my child with their homework? It’s really important that parents take an interest in the work their children bring home, but you shouldn’t take over. Giving too much help will speed up the time your child is spending on their homework and it will also help to keep arguments to a minimum, but it’s actually detrimental to their learning. Your child’s teacher isn’t interested that you are able to complete a fractions worksheet or design a poster on electricity. You should be able to do it. You’re a grown up! However if your child can’t, their teacher needs to know so they can offer support in the classroom to make sure the topic is fully understood. This is your child’s homework not a joint effort. Your job is direction and encouragement to find the answers themselves.

Six tips for helping with homework

1) Make sure your child is eating well, getting enough sleep and getting enough exercise. All this helps concentration both in the classroom and at home after school.

2) Create a homework routine for your child to stick to. Identify a regular place and a regular time, making sure it’s quiet and free from distractions. Discuss the expectations you have and the consequences if the homework isn’t completed well. This will, hopefully, encourage good homework habits.

3) Show your child you care about the homework they have been set. Try not to let your own dislike for a particular topic affect the way you work with your child.

4) Direct your child to focus their mind. Before they launch into the task, encourage a ‘think through’. Ask them to tell you what needs doing and ask them questions about the task set. How long does it need to be? Does it need doing on the computer or by hand? What ideas have they had since the homework was set? This direction helps them focus their ideas and work productively.

5) Reflect on the task once it’s done. Was it easier than they thought? What was good about the work they produced? What do they need to work on?

6) Think carefully before introducing a reward system. This can lead to rushed results and the necessity to offer a ‘treat’ for every piece completed. Better to let them know from the start that homework is something that needs to be done, and done well.

Youngest members of St John’s College have a new place to learnLittle St John’s, the day nursery and reception class of St John’s College in Southsea, moved location over the summer and was officially opened by a group of little stars on Saturday 4 October.

The official opening event, which was planned as part of the College’s Open Day, was attended by current parents and pupils, staff and also a number of local parents considering the new setting for their children. Visitors enjoyed a glass of bubbly and canapés as they looked around the newly refurbished facility.

Affectionately renamed ‘Little St John’s’ the new nursery and reception classes are housed in the main Junior School building - helping to make the transition from nursery to ‘big school’ even smoother. Complete with new fixtures and fittings, the facility offers enhanced outdoor areas and extended learning opportunities for children aged 2 to 5.

St John’s College is now taking applications for the Reception Year 2015. Parents can arrange a visit to look around the new setting or a taster session for their child by contacting Mrs Mengham, Admissions Registrar, on 023 9081 5118.

All babies cry, and some cry a lot; this can be distressing and on occasions frustrating for all concerned. Sometimes it is easy to work out why babies are crying, for example hunger, dirty nappy, wind or if they are tired, however sometimes there appears to be no apparent reason and nothing seems to soothe them. Some simple reflexology moves on the feet of your baby may help reduce those screaming fits.

Reflexology for babies uses massage strokes over areas of the feet and only requires gentle pressure. There are a few simple moves that you can try on your baby, try and do these moves for 5 minutes every day when your baby is calm. Lie the baby down, face up, make this a fun time with lots of smiles, or you could even sing nursery rhymes to your baby as you work on their feet.

These moves can also be carried out in the same manner on the hands.

During a screaming fit, try picking your baby up and placing on your shoulder, use one hand to support the baby and the other hand to perform the reflexology moves described on both hands and feet.

Having a new born baby also can take its toll on you as a parent, so why not try some reflexology yourself; it is particularly beneficial in giving you ‘me time’ after the birth of your baby and can offer many benefits to you, aiming to optimise your health, aid relaxation, de-stress and improves the quality of sleep in post-natal women.

Reflexology during PregnancyBy Susan Cunningham

There is evidence from women who feel they have benefitted from reflexology during pregnancy and that their pregnancy discomforts and minor ailments have been relieved. Two recent studies have shown that reflexology “significantly reduced pain during labour”, “reduced the length of the first stage of labour”[1] and “improved the quality of sleep in post-natal women” [2].

In the context of pregnancy, reflexology aims to optimize the health potential of the Mum-To-Be and to support her as her body goes through a period of great change, encouraging balance, relaxation and harmony within the body.

Susan Cunningham, MFHT is a qualified complementary therapist practicing Reflexology, Indian Head Massage, and Body Massage

Soothing crying babies withReflexologyBy Sally Earlam FMAR. BSc. RN. PGCEAssociation of Reflexologists – Maternity Specialist.

Techniques for babies Work on one foot at a time, use one hand to hold each foot, one at a time and the other one to make the following actions:

1) On the bottom of each foot use your thumb to make circular movements, working in a clockwise direction in the middle of foot – this mimics the direction the digestive system works in the body.

2) Repeat the same move over the heel area

3) Use your thumb to gently push up from the base of each toe, up to the very tops of the toe.

4) Place your thumb in the centre of the foot and gently press in and hold for about 10 seconds.

What is reflexology?

Reflexology is a non-invasive, relaxing complementary therapy that aims to optimise both physical and emotional health. It works by massaging and stimulating specific points (usually on the feet but sometimes on the hands, face and ears) called reflex points. These points are believed to correspond to different parts of the body. It is thought that the stimulation to these reflex points encourages the body to regain a state of relaxation which in turn allows the body to return to a state of well-being. Reflexology cannot be used to diagnose medical conditions.

Useful Contacts The Association of Reflexologists has an excellent website full of useful information, including a ‘find a reflexologist’ service. There are also interactive foot and hand maps and videos of real client’s experiences.

Christmas is upon us once again, and unless you are amazingly prepared, there’s shopping to be done! The big retailers have been bombarding us for weeks, and you can rarely walk down the street or switch on the television without seeing adverts for this year’s Christmas must-haves.

Enjoyable shoppingBut what about the things that the big businesses don’t offer? Often products and services small businesses can excel at providing – handmade goods and locally produced items, in-depth product knowledge and personalised advice, customer service, a friendly and enjoyable shopping experience.

Supporting the local economyAdded to all of this, when you buy local you are making an important contribution to your community’s economy. Spending money with local businesses causes a ripple-effect, as those businesses in turn spend locally, and so on, helping to improve local prosperity and create jobs.

Small Business SaturdaySmall Business Saturday UK is a grassroots, non-political, non-commercial campaign, which highlights small business success and encourages consumers to ‘shop local’ and support small businesses in their communities. The day itself takes place on the first shopping Saturday in December each year, but the campaign aims to have a lasting impact on small businesses. In 2014 Small Business Saturday UK will take place on Saturday December 6th.

A child’s perspectiveChildren see their world from a different perspective – to capture the world the way they see it 2-3 feet off the ground is about where you need to be, though if you’re like me, you may need someone to help you back up again!

Capturing CutenessPhotography tips

As a family photographer I’m often asked for tips to help my clients when photographing their own children. So here’s a few of my favourite tips which you may find useful too.

By Moira Vence-Gunstane of Moira Lizzie Photography

Keep them in one placeEvery family session is a workout for me, I run around, get down on the ground, climb fences and tree stumps to capture cuteness. Chasing kids around for photographs is hard work. It’s a good idea to run around first to burn off some of their energy – they’ll be more inclined to sit on a log, a blanket or upturned crate for a while and that’s the opportunity for some more contemplative images - keep talking and shooting – you don’t know how long it will be before they’re off again!

PropsStaring at a camera isn’t comfortable for anyone and won’t result in natural images either. Children love to play so grab their favourite toy or if you’re out and about I use what’s around me and just give them a simple instruction along the lines of ‘hold this branch down and see if you can spot the bird in the tree’. They’ll be so busy playing with their prop or looking for the bird they’ll forget the camera long enough for you to get some non-posed natural shots.

Silly faces are OKCuteness comes in all forms – including silly faces. When I see my children day to day they’re not sparkly clean with hair brushed, sitting at a posed angle, smiling at me – I see moody, mad, sad, giggly and slightly crazy. By letting them play and resisting the urge to say ‘Cheese’ or ‘Smile at the Camera’ they’ll express themselves the best way they know how and if that’s a silly face – well, that’s their character shining through which is just as cute as a smiley face.
