Local authors publish an Olympic feast for kidsLocal authors Sally Brown and Kate Morris recently celebrated the forthcoming publication of their latest cookbook at Jungs, who were also celebrating 75 years in Beaconsfi eld.
Kate and Sally’s latest book called ‘The World in My Kitchen’ will transport children around the globe. The main meals, snacks and desserts use ingredients and recipes typical of each country or continent, from warming up for the Olympics with Feijoada, a traditional Brazilian black bean stew, to trying a typical Chinese snack of pretty marbled Tea Eggs.
“Every recipe we have published has been tried, tested and tasted by a young cook aged from 3 to 10 – and they are always very honest with feedback!” Kate told us. Their new book is available from Amazon and from bookshops nationwide from July 21st.

Government makes U-turn on Academy plansThe Government has dropped its controversial plans to force all state schools in England to become Academies, free from council control.
Plans to require all schools to become academies were announced in the Budget in April. However, after threats of industrial action by teachers and dissent from fellow Conservatives, the department announced that the plans would be scrapped.
Education Secretary Nicky Morgan claims that it is because the Government is listening to the people and has made the U-turn due to concerns expressed by parents, education experts, head teachers and teachers.
Two thirds of secondary schools already have Academy status, though their success has been mixed with some falling short of their aims and expected exam results.
Morgan said that the Government had changed their plans after listening to opponents of the scheme. She said: “Making every school an Academy is the best way to ensure every child, regardless of birth or background, has access to a world-class education.
“However, having listened to the feedback from parliamentary colleagues and the education sector we will now change the path to reaching that goal.”

Children tell us what it was like to meet The Queen…Here is a snap shot of the day’s events as seen through the eyes of Berkhamsted prep school pupil, Ishan Sharma, and sixth former, Chanté Bohitige:
Ishan writes: “As we walked down the High Street, I was amazed to see that it was a totally diff erent town. There were Union Jack fl ags and bunting hanging around the street. People were gathering with excitement to catch a glimpse of The Queen.
Chanté continues: “From the moment that Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth entered the historic Lych Gate at Castle Campus in her gleaming Maroon Bentley, silence fell upon the school as it would seem that the surreal nature of what was happening before our eyes suddenly dawned on us. Greeted by a host of dignitaries Her Majesty made her way to the quad, where she was met by the School’s Combined Cadet Force.”
Ishan adds: “The crowd exploded, cheering as loud as ten lions giving it their all. [The Queen] looked radiant in her fuchsia outfi t.”
Chanté concludes: “Even after the Royal party had left the school, the sense of community amongst students, teachers, caretakers and chefs is something that I doubt will ever be matched …. I have no doubt that this visit will remain engrained in each of our memories for many years to come. “

Get reading with ‘The Big Friendly Read’The books for this year’s Summer Reading Challenge have been announced and the theme is ‘The Big Friendly Read’, organised in collaboration with the Roald Dahl estate, as part of the Roald Dahl 100 celebrations and in honour of the legendary storyteller.
The Summer Reading Challenge is the UK’s biggest reading for pleasure programme in libraries for primary aged children, with 800,000 children taking part last year.
The Big Friendly Read will feature two lists – one for younger children and one for older children – comprising 72 titles in total. Many of the books are new reads, featuring Roald Dahl’s best-loved characters and the amazing artwork of his principal illustrator, Sir Quentin Blake. It will encourage reading on a giant scale and will feature themes such as invention, mischief and friendship as explored in Roald Dahl’s books.
Children can sign up for the Summer Reading Challenge at their local library as the school summer term ends and the holidays begin – there’s no charge to participate so why not pop down to your library? Read more at The Reading Agency, www.readingagency.org.uk
The Queen visits Berkhamsted SchoolThe ultimate honour was bestowed on the whole community of Berkhamsted School on 6th May, when Her Majesty The Queen, the school’s Patron, paid her fi rst visit to mark the historic occasion of the school’s 475th anniversary.
Four girls from Heatherton House School in Amersham, which is a satellite prep school in the Berkhamsted Schools Group, were lucky enough to meet the Queen and present her with posies of fl owers.
The eff ect of the impending royal visit extended beyond the school gates and into the town where there was an air of excitement and anticipation as the time of the royal arrival approached.
The fact that the visit coincided with The Queen’s 90th birthday celebrations gave an added fi llip to what was an important event that will be recorded in the annals of Berkhamsted School’s long history.

Favourite Summer Places Our favourite place to be in summer is our own back garden!
Naturally, a prerequisite of this choice is fabulous weather, but nothing beats throwing
all the windows wide open and enjoying a back to basics chilled day sprinkler jumping, playing badminton, having a picnic on the trampoline (where else!) and ending the day with a BBQ. No queues, no cost, no hassle!
We also love Chesham Open Air Pool – there’s something about a bit of outdoor swimming that makes us dream we’re somewhere hot & glamorous. Plus, there’s a café and a nearby park to prolong the outing.Zoe – What’s On editor
Nothing beats a last-minute picnic on one of the Chiltern hills. We particularly love the incredible views and the walk around Coombe
Hill. My kids love to fl y kites and explore the adventure trail (ideal for big kids and small). It’s also a great place to take visitors as it overlooks Chequers and you can see for miles, as far as Oxford. We also love Black Park, Wendover Woods and Ashridge Estate, anywhere there’s nature and sunshine. Chrissie – Editor
Pick Your Own (PYO) at at Peterley Manor Farm near High Wycombe was a revelation to my 3 year old son – fruit and veg grow on plants and in soil and don’t just come pre-packed from the supermarket!
Our favourite time to visit is mid-season in July when you can pick strawberries, raspberries, peas, chard, carrots and beetroot amongst others. The season runs from now until the end of October and it’s the perfect active day, or morning, for little ones and big ones alike. Plus, for mum and dad the coff ee and cake in the Wild Strawberry Café is the ideal treat!Lena – Advertising Manager
When we fancy going on a low cost adventure, we always head to Naphill Common. It has tons of paths that meander through a variety of
trees, woodland creatures and mud to excite toddlers and older kids alike. It also has plenty of tree stumps for impromptu sitting and animal-made paths for hide and seek. There is also a café in the pavilion, within walking distance and next to the car park handily. The kids love to use their imagination in the woods, although it doesn’t take much eff ort, they are simply magical.Charlotte – Families Online, North Buckinghamshire

Tramping through Tring Park for a family picnic and spending an afternoon in the Natural History Museum in Tring
defi nitely make the top of our list for summer activities. When we are in the mood for some retail therapy (and this happens often in a family of 3 girls), we hit Berkhamsted High Street. There are serious bargains to be had in the treasure trove of shops, (boutique and charity) which keep myself and the girls busy for the whole day. When we need to refuel there are so many lovely coff ee shops to chose from, one of our favourites has to be the fabulous Make Believe Café.Laura– Families Online, West Hertfordshire

Summer learning
The long summer holidays are a well-earned break; a time for kids to spend whole mornings in their PJs, to build dens, go on endless outings and enjoy a ride on their bikes in the park. But the downside of such a lengthy spell away from school is that learning can slip back signifi cantly, with children often forgetting some of the skills they have learnt.
The good news is that we’ve
got plenty of ways to prevent this so-called ‘summer slide’. This is largely fun stuff and there’s no need to capitalise all of their, or indeed your, time. Don’t panic, July and August won’t become some sort of temporary home school project and besides, they’re likely to be awake 12 to 14 hours a day, so even half an hour of learning still leaves masses of time for kicking back and relaxing…
Head to the library for the Summer Reading ChallengeThis popular scheme runs every summer in almost all public libraries across the UK and is designed to encourage children to read throughout the holidays. Usually, those who fi nish at least six books over the six-week period receive badges, rewards and a certifi cate at the end, with some schools choosing to hand these out in assembly at the start of the new academic year. Even better: it’s all completely free!
Check out the Summer Reading Challenge website for more information, as well as children’s book-related news, chat and competitions. www.summerreading
Send some postcards Get your children to share their holiday news with grandparents or friends via good old-fashioned postcards. You could
agree a swap with their best friends before heading off for any trips. Younger school-age pupils can practice their letter formation, whilst older ones can look at incorporating some exciting vocabulary into their messages. For keen writers, perhaps fi nd a pen pal – this could even be a cousin who lives far away.
Break out the board games and prop open the puzzle booksBoard games are ideal for those inevitable-to-a-British-summer rainy days and many of the more traditional options incorporate maths. For reception children, work out their counting with Kerplunk (they’ll need to check who has the most sticks and the diff erence) and Snakes and Ladders. For junior school age kids, Monopoly requires dealing with money and addition, subtraction and multiplication.

Meanwhile, Sudoku, word search and logic problem books are all brilliant brain stretchers for times when a more solitary activity is needed.
Keep a holiday scrapbook Head to the stationery shop and choose a funky diary or scrapbook and some pens or pencils, then get them started with keeping a record of their most exciting moments of the summer. For younger writers, even a word or sentence under a picture or stuck-in memento is a start, whilst older children might want to put pen to paper and turn the scrap book into a lengthier journal.
Sneak stealth learning into everyday activities Daily life is full of sneaky little educational opportunities – some so subtle that your children will barely notice what you’re up to. It might be weighing and measuring ingredients when baking cakes, dividing the bill between families in a restaurant, or budgeting in the toy shop. If you get too into this, the kids will inevitably spot what you’re doing and complain, but now and then you should get away with it.
Start a blog Tap into an older child’s interests and suggest they set up a blog about it – it could be sports-related, about cooking or outings they’ve been on. If you’re worried about internet safety, just keep it anonymous or fi lter out any messages and comments
yourself. Another option is to keep the blog private and not actually publish it – they can still show it to friends. You never know, they could be the next internet blogging sensation…
Ready, get set, go for some Olympic-themed learning 2016 is an Olympic year, so combine boosting interest in sport with some maths and literacy. Ideas include reading the sports
section of the paper or setting up their own medal winners’ league table by country. You could also pick a medal winner’s country each day to research together and fi nd a few facts about.
Work on non-academic skills that are useful tooWith much less going on compared to term time, the holidays are a perfect opportunity to work on age-appropriate skills your child could do with picking up or honing. Improving their swimming, doing their shoelaces up, or getting used to becoming a shade more independent by, say, walking to post a letter or to the corner shop, are all worthwhile ideas.

Summer learning
Avoid the summer brain drain by taking advantage of your less structured time to embark on some enjoyable maths learning journeys. The school run may be temporarily on hold, but learning doesn’t need to be on pause too! Many children lose on average the equivalent of one to two months maths and skills over the summer holidays. However, with a little inspiration and some planning, the summer can instead be converted into an opportunity to stretch their minds and explore new concepts.
It is often a challenge to keep your children physically and mentally active during the long summer break, so here is a list of activities to try by Numbermix. These will help you demonstrate that learning is important, relevant and fun and can be an enjoyable part of their day-to-day lives. In fact, learning can happen anywhere and anytime! Take your pick from these fun-fi lled activities…
Preschool - Craft Stick Movement Game: Collect 20 craft sticks. On the fi rst 10, label each of them with a number between 1 and 10. On the next 10 label them with an action such as jump/hop/dance. When the craft sticks are ready, place them in 2 separate piles
– numbers and actions. Pick one stick from each pile. The number tells you how many of each action you must do and the action tells you what action to do. For example if ‘6’ and ‘star jump’ were picked, you must complete 6 star jumps, counting down from that number as you go.
Reception – Outdoor Symmetry: In the middle of a paved area draw a line using chalk about two metres long. This is your mirror line. You and your child should stand either side of the line. Make a shape with your body and ask your child to mirror the shape. If they mirror it correctly, then it is their turn to make a shape with their body and for you to mirror them! This is great fun when done to music. You can also use chalk to draw a shape or picture on one side of the mirror line. Hand the chalk over and ask your numberbug to draw the mirror image of your shape or picture on the other side of the mirror line.
Year 1 – Penny Trade Game: You will need: A die, a sheet of paper and pen, 30 x 1p, 20 x 5p, 10 x 10p, 10 x 20p, 5 x 50p, 10 x £1 and 1 x £2 coins in a box, these can either be plastic or real.
Players take turns rolling the die, and for each spot on the die they pick a coin from the box. For each turn, players record the number they rolled on a piece of paper, they also record the total value of the coins they picked and which coins could have been used to make the same total with the least number of coins. On any turn a player can choose to trade any coins they have for a larger coin if they are able to. The fi rst player to trade their way to a £2 coin is the winner.
Year 2 – Sundial: Find a sunny spot in the garden or even on a patio or pavement. Put the stick in the ground so it is vertical. If you are using a patio or pavement, you can put the stick in playdough and use that to hold the stick upright on the hard ground. Each hour throughout the day, place a rock, or mark with chalk where
the shadow from the stick falls at that time. Depending on the time you have available, you may have to place rocks over a couple of days before your sundial is complete. Year 3 - Learning walk: Take your child on a learning walk. Look for numbers, shapes, angles (hint: tree branches are a good place to start; antenna on snails should get extra points!), patterns and sequences. Count trees, leaves, scooters and signs. Challenge and time them while they discover maths in nature!

Year 4 - Appoint a family planner/travel agent: Choose a special day out/holiday trip from your calendar and appoint your child as the travel agent. Have them look at maps, estimate distances, consider what you might need to budget for and make a suggested schedule. You could start by helping your child research events and activities in the area and select some to include in the schedule.
Year 5 – Leafy Multiplication: Ask your child to go out to the garden or park and fi nd branches with diff erent numbers of leaves on them (3,4,5 etc.). You can then ask your child multiplication questions and have them organise their leaves to show the correct product. This can be done with all their times tables as long as you can fi nd the right branches!
Year 6 - Fractals all around us: Ask your child to fi nd examples of fractals in nature. Fractals are never-ending patterns that repeat themselves in diff erent scales (hint: you’ll fi nd them in trees, leaves, rivers, water drops). The trick is to look for ‘self-similarity’ – the part that looks like the whole. Contrary to popular belief, you won’t fi nd ‘frozen fractals all around’ but your children should get bonus points for any fractals they can point out.
Finally, ask your children to try to get through a day without using maths and they’ll soon learn it’s impossible. Make the most of those lazy days to come and enjoy your summer!

School matters
Starting primary school the easy way
Help your child get used to the idea of schoolIn the months approaching the big day, read books about going to school together – Janet Ahlberg’s ‘Starting School’ or Lauren Child’s ‘I am Absolutely Too Small for School’ are ideal. This will introduce them to what goes on and let you discuss school together, answering any questions your child might have.
Talk too about your own happy school memories or encourage an older sibling or friend to discuss the things they enjoy at their primary school.
Build familiarity with their new school Attending settling-in sessions is invaluable to build familiarity and demystify what school is all about. They’ll let your little one meet their teachers, see the classroom, dinner hall and loos, and at least a few prospective classmates.
Meanwhile, if you’re driving or walking past the school, point out positive features, such as the playground equipment.
Don’t worry about reading, writing and maths beforehandMany parents are concerned that their child can’t recognise letters or count before
they begin school but remember this is what they’ll be going there to learn – teachers don’t expect any prior knowledge. Focus instead on non-academic ‘school ready’ skills: things like going to the loo independently and cleaning themselves afterwards, putting their own coat on and eating using cutlery. Being able to listen, sit still, share and follow instructions will make school life easier too.
The day or two before the big day…Highlight the things they’re excited about, such as a toy that caught their eye in the reception classroom, or seeing the lovely teacher or their friend from nursery again. Pre-empt their anxieties too – these can be little things, for example, how to let the teacher know if they need the loo, or what happens if they don’t like any of the lunch options.
Double check where you are meant to be and when on the first day and what your child needs to bring with them. If you’ll be driving, remember to work out where you’ll park – mum or dad spending 30 minutes getting flustered because you’re late and can’t find a space will not create a relaxed mood for day one.
The night before…Ease the morning rush by getting everything ready now – uniform laid out, packed lunch made (if they aren’t having school lunches) and school bag packed.
Help the first morning run smoothlyGetting kids from bedroom to classroom on time can be challenging even for the most organised parents. Minimise stress (and how many times you have to say ‘hurry up’) by putting away any toys or turning off screens that are too distracting. Be clear with your child about what needs doing when and keep any messy eaters in PJs until breakfast is over, to avoid ruining that pristine first-day uniform.
It’s time to go in…We all want that perfect first day photo but don’t make them late – and irritable – with endless attempts to get it. Stringing out your goodbyes for ages can end in tears that otherwise wouldn’t happen – simply remind them to have fun and that you’ll be there to collect them later and give them a hug. If they’re nervous or unsure, start a small ritual, perhaps putting a ‘kiss’ in their pocket for them to grab later if they’re missing you.
Don’t forget the tissuesThere’s a time and a place for concealing your own feelings from your children and if you’re upset or anxious, this is one of them! Try your best to wait until you’re out of sight before sobbing, otherwise you could confuse or upset your child unnecessarily. Once they’ve gone in, if the waterworks do roll, rest assured you probably won’t be the only one, so don’t worry about what other parents or teachers think!
Starting primary school is a major milestone in your little one’s childhood – and indeed in your life too. So how can you ease them into this big change and limit the potential for tears on the first day? Here are a few tips to help you prepare your little one for their very first day at “big school”…

How to help your child transfer to secondary school
Ramp up responsibilitiesSenior school children have to be considerably more responsible for their own belongings and themselves. Whereas primary school teachers send letters to parents, at ‘big’ school, communication on day-to-day issues might well be to your child only.
Begin building independence out and aboutMost secondary school pupils travel to school minus mum and dad, so get yours used to being out without you. It’ll be less daunting for them if this starts on the journey to primary
school, rather than being thrown into travelling alone on a lesser-known route.
Listen out for concernsSome children take this huge change in their stride and are ready to move on, while others will feel anxious. Common concerns include getting lost around a much larger school, dealing with the journey, making new friends and managing the homework load.
Attend settling-in daysMost secondaries hold a session for new joiners, usually during the summer term of year six. This is an important opportunity to get to know
the buildings, potential classmates and teachers and it should make the fi rst day less intimidating.
Here are a few tips to keep in mind once your child has started secondary school…
Expect them to be tired and emotional…Many year sevens get very tired thanks to the ‘newness’, on top of a longer day and a more complicated journey. Stick to early nights and restful weekends to fend off exhaustion – and the moodiness that goes with this.
Get super-organised with homeworkAt primary, pupils might only have had a small amount of homework; expect the game to be raised now. Not only will there be more but keeping
on top of when it all needs handing in can be complicated.
Get used to knowing much less about what goes onIn primary, you might well have been at the school gates most days and familiar with your child’s friends, parents and teachers. This will change: with independent travel comes a more hands-off approach.
Be there for them It’s tempting to think this independence means you’re being made redundant come September but they’ll still need you - albeit in diff erent ways. Be there as a sounding board - someone to listen and advise.

Get active
July/August 2016
Swimming is an exciting and rewarding activity that you can do with your child from as early an age as you wish. The only proviso is that the water is warm enough – around 29-30°C for a toddler – and that he’s fi t and well.
What are the benefi ts? Taking your toddler swimming has many benefi ts including:• Giving him a complete physical work-out
which helps to strengthen his heart, lungs and respiratory system.
• Helps with his core muscle development and co-ordination.
• Regular swimming can help to improve eating and sleeping patterns.
• Swimming can be socially stimulating for both you and your toddler, as well as being an excellent way to bond.
• It is an activity which all the family can take part in.
• Swimming is a life skill that has health benefi ts for all ages.
• It’s a skill which could save his life.
How to get your toddler started1. Even if you plan to take your toddler to
swimming lessons, it’s a good idea to take him to the pool yourself fi rst, before you begin any classes.
2. Look for family sessions, or times when the whole pool is available to adults and children.
3. Start with sessions of around 30 minutes until he’s happy in the water.
4. Get into the water fi rst and stand in the depth where you feel most comfortable with your arms out, ready to hold him, then ask your partner or friend to hand him to you in the water.
What your child will needThere is a wide range of swimwear available so if your child needs some encouragement it may help if you allow him to choose his own. It’s best for boys to wear trunk-type shorts as longer ones that reach the knee will drag in the water and make swimming diffi cult.
There are also a lot of buoyancy aids on the market, so you may want to consider some of these until your child is confi dent in the water. Or you can go to a pool that off ers family sessions with fl oats and toys for the children.
Goggles will stop water getting in his eyes, but you’ll need to make sure they fi t correctly and that they don’t reduce his vision.
When not to take your child swimmingAs a general guide, if your child has any of the following symptoms it would be best not to take him swimming:• Cough or cold• Fever• Infection• Diarrhoea• Skin rash• Ear infection• Open wound or cut

Rio Olympics 2016
Olympian Adrian Moorhouse talks to Families
Adrian Moorhouse MBE was a world champion at 22 and Olympic gold medallist in the 100m breaststroke at Seoul two years later. He now uses the skills he learnt as a swimmer in his performance coaching business, Lane4, based in Bourne End, Bucks.
I talked to him about his life as a professional athlete, his business and commentating at this year’s Olympics.
Having learnt to swim at the age of six, he went on to swim for his teacher’s club, then for his school in Yorkshire. It all changed when he started swimming for the City of Leeds Swimming Club.
“By 15 I was swimming twenty hours a week. I was tired and my schoolwork suff ered, although I did ok at what we now call GCSEs. But on the positive side, I had made massive progress in swimming at the age of 15. I won the national age groups for my age but I also came second in the Senior Championships. At the age of 15 I was on the Junior and Senior British teams.
At the age of 16, I became the British men’s number one. By 17, I was third in Europe and by 18 I had won the Commonwealth Games.
I left school and went to university in America and learnt great techniques around
nutrition, psychology and strength training and came back to the UK to Leeds.
I had reached the pinnacle of success in 1986 at the age of 22 when I was world number one. At 23 I broke the world record, at 24 I got gold at Seoul and the years after were even better. I competed in two other Olympics; 1992 was my last Olympics and I retired at 28.”
Adrian has commentated on Olympic swimming since 1998 and will be at Rio this year. He has high hopes for the British swimming team.
“I am really happy to be commentating at Rio. A fantastic British swimmer, Adam Peaty, has recently won the European Championships. He’s also a breaststroker and won the World Championships last year. So he goes into Rio in the same position I was in when I won the gold at Seoul. If he wins, it will be the fi rst time we have had someone win it since I did back in 1988.”
We turned to discussing being a parent and how to encourage our kids in sport.
“Our job is to support and create an environment where they feel cared for because it should be the coach who challenges them and pushes them and gives them feedback on their stroke, running or throwing.
You have parents who see that their child is talented but if their child doesn’t want do it, they won’t succeed- they’ve got to want it themselves. You have to create opportunity, fi nd out what someone is passionate about and also recognise that it might not be your passion or interest.
Equally, you need to teach your children about staying power. You’ve got to help kids look at focus and commitment. Try and fi nd out why they don’t want to do something and give them a reason to continue with it.
At 12 and 13, kids often get dispirited because they are coming fi fth or sixth, but if they keep practicing they will improve. Tell them to compare themselves against themselves, rather than against another individual and most
importantly, tell them to be the best that they can be.”
It’s great advice from a very inspirational man, whose spirit and determination has defi ned all that he has done in sport and business.
I am looking forward to hearing him commentate at Rio and hopefully seeing Adam Peaty and the rest of Team GB bring home some medals.
With the Rio Olympics only a matter of weeks away, Claire Winter talks to Olympian Adrian Moorhouse MBE about life after winning gold

It is one thing getting your little ones sleeping soundly at home but what happens when you travel or spend a few days away from home? Even one night of disruption can lead to a week of trying to regain a routine. So, how can you help your children to sleep well when travelling and slip straight back to the usual routine when you get back home?
Here are my 5 top tips for sleep when travelling with young children…
1. It is unlikely that you will be able to stick to your little one’s usual sleep schedule if you are on the road because the motion of the car may cause her to sleep more than usual, or to take a longer nap. Just let her sleep as she wants to and then adjust accordingly when you arrive at your destination. So, if she has not slept well on the journey, get her to bed nice and early. If she has had plenty of sleep on the journey and it’s getting late in the day, you could wake her up for the fi nal part of the journey and then go ahead with the usual bedtime routine.
2. Changing time zones can aff ect all of us but they can certainly throw the schedule of babies or young children. Don’t stress over it too much though because after you spend a day travelling, things will be a little out of whack anyway. My advice is to switch to local time as soon as you arrive and do everything as you would normally, but on the new time.
3. Try to create a sleep friendly environment with some familiarities from home. If you have brought any bedtime teddies or comforters along, or the pillow from their beds or a nightlight from home,
these could all help to set the scene. A portable black out blind might help darken a particularly bright room and have a play with the air conditioning to get the temperature just right, otherwise you might wake in the night to a sweaty hot or freezing cold room.
4. While you are away is not the time to try something new like putting a toddler who usually sleeps in a cot, into a bed for the fi rst time or putting a child on a top bunk for the fi rst time. The last thing you need to be doing on a family break is training a toddler to stay in bed or dealing with injuries from falling out of bed onto a hard fl oor.
5. It is okay if the holiday sleep routine is not exactly the same as the home routine. Just because you let your child fall asleep in the pushchair every night on holiday while you go out for dinner, does not mean he will expect the same when you get home.

Homemade ice lollies are a lot healthier than anything bought as you can control what goes into them. They are a great way of using up a glut of fruit, or making treats from frozen berries. Maple syrup replaces sugar and yoghurt works well in place of cream.
100g black currants, fresh or frozen50g blueberries, fresh or frozen50g raspberries, fresh or frozen
150ml plain yoghurt3 tbsp maple syrup
1 teaspoon acai powderJuice of 1/2 lime
Makes 4 standard ice lollies
Ask an adult to supervise you while you place all the ingredients into a food processor and whizz to a puree, adding more lime juice if the mixture is thick.
Taste the mixture to check for sweetness as black currants can be very sour, add little more maple syrup if necessary. Transfer to lolly moulds and freeze for at least 8 hours or overnight.
Creamy berry yoghurt ice lolliesAdd a 200ml can of coconut milk to the mixture at the end, do not mix it, just gently swirl it round to achieve a mottled eff ect. This will reduce the tartness of the black currants and increase the yield to 6-7 lollies. If you run out of lolly moulds, fi ll ice cube trays for mini versions and use cocktail sticks for lolly sticks, take care with the sharp points though.
Strawberry yoghurt ice lolliesReplace the black currants, blueberries and raspberries with 200g fresh, hulled and chopped strawberries, reduce the maple syrup to 1 tbsp and add 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar, check for sweetness. Make creamy version by adding the coconut milk as above.
