Kids get reading this summer!

Every year, thousands of families all over the country are involved in the UK’s biggest reading event for children in libraries, the Summer Reading Challenge. The aim of the challenge is to get children to read six books from their library during the summer holidays. The 2012 theme will be Story Lab – a celebration of story and the imagination, Story Lab will also have a link to the 2012 Olympics.

To sign up, just head to your local library at the beginning of the summer holidays. It’s completely free – and every child will receive a membership card or pack. Kids love collecting stickers and they’ll be keen to complete their challenge-activity kit, plus most libraries have other incentives to make it a fun experience. The Challenge is designed for children of all ages and reading abilities. They can read any books they like: fact books, stories, joke books, picture books – audio books and e-books count too! As long as you’re borrowing them from the library, they all count. It’s not just about books! Libraries will have lots of special events during the holidays to help celebrate London 2012, and it’s a great place to meet and make new friends. For parents who haven’t joined yet, it’s the perfect opportunity – anyone can join a library and it’s all free. Parents and carers love the Summer Reading Challenge because children discover the joy of reading – and kids love it because it’s fun.

For many parents the thought of attending regular eye examinations with toddlers in tow is a nightmare, but this is all about to change. Independent optician, Ochil Eyes, has launched a series of private open afternoons for children’s groups and their parents. The practice schedules eye examinations for the whole group and closes its doors to the public for an afternoon, meaning that parents can leave their children to play under supervision while they have their vision tested in peace.

After their own eye examination, parents accompany their children into the test room for their sight test.

As well as contributing to the curriculum for excellence, parent and Ochil Eyes practice owner Mary Docherty believes that these open days will take the stress out of eye appointments for parents. She said: “As a mum myself, I’ve had first-hand experience of the struggles many parents have when attending eye appointments. The open days will make attending regular eye examinations much more pleasurable for parents and their children.”

Ochil Eyes, 105 High Street, Tillicoultry, ClackmannanshireTo arrange a private eye examination afternoon for your group simply contact the friendly team at Ochil Eyes, 01259 752 755.

Seppi Preston of Lighthouse Studios Causewayhead, has won another two awards, in the 2012 Master Photographer Association Scottish region Awards. The ceremony was held in Edinburgh on 26th March, where Seppi won an award of excellence in the family portrait category and a merit award in the contemporary portrait category.

This is the seventh consecutive year that Seppi has received awards in the industry for his high standard of creative, relaxed and fun photography. The judges commented that his image “was one of the most imaginative and interesting they had ever seen” and that “it is genuine innovation like this that sets photographers apart.”

As Chairman of the Master Photographers’ Association Scottish region, Seppi is committed to providing high quality photography, whether that’s in the award-winning photo studio, photographing

corporate clients or out photographing weddings, and is often the first port of call for fellow master photographers needing advice.

Seppi and his wife Francesca have run Lighthouse Studios for the past 9 years, and Seppi says, “I am lucky to have a job that I love, with fantastic loyal customers and recognition from some of the UK’s top photographers. I am really excited about my success in the awards – there was some tough competition out there, and I’m glad the judges picked out my photographs.”

Over the years Seppi has won awards for classic portraiture. Also last year saw the start of his now extremely popular training courses - aimed at people with no experience in photography, teaching them how to get their cameras off auto mode.Lighthouse Studios, 13 Alloa Road, Causewayhead, Stirling, FK9 5LH www.lighthousestudios.co.uk 01786 475007

Kip McGrath - Keep Brains Active over the SummerThe long summer holidays are a great chance for parents and children to relax and enjoy a well deserved break from the term time routine of school and activities. However, some parents worry that such a long break from school could hinder their child’s progress when school returns and welcome the opportunity of a bit of tutoring during the summer break. Active Kids Active Stirling Summer 2012Keep the kids active this Summer!

Plus with their early booking offer you can save £10 off the total full day, full week price per child at the PEAK Summer Camps. Book by 15 June and pay £80 per week instead of £90 - terms and condition apply.

Other activities in the summer programme include – Athletics, Dance, Football, Gymnastics, Ice Skating lessons, Jumpin beans, Outdoor activities, Racquet sports, Rugby, Sports camps, Swimming lessons, Tennis, Trampolining, The summer programme brochure is available from the Peak, Forthbank and other venues across Stirling or go to www.activestirling.org.uk or tel 01786 273555 for more details.

Au Pair EcosseThe term au pair comes from the French ‘Jeune Fille Au Pair’ – a young girl living as part of a family. This can be a very satisfactory form of childcare, whether it is for a whole year or perhaps just to cover the summer holiday period. The au pair becomes a big sister (or possibly brother) for the children, another member of the family who can introduce a different culture and language. Au pairs expect to work 25 – 35 hours a week for £70 – 90 plus food and board, so this is a cost effective way of providing childcare and having a live-in babysitter.

TofindanaupairitisadvisabletouseaBritish Au Pair Agents Association member. BAPAA is a self-governing body which sets standards for au pairing in Britain.

They have established a code of conduct for screening procedures and on-going support for au pairs and families. A good aupairagentwillhelptheaupairfindfriends locally and sort out any teething problems you may encounter, ensuring a good experience for au pair and family.

Susan Chesterman lives in Cambuskenneth with her partner Alasdair and children, Harvey 7 and

Ellie 5. Susan works part-time at Prudential. She is also a Jamie At Home representative, where she sells Jamie Oliver products at house parties. If you are interested in having a party or for more information contact Susan on 07821165077.

Why you like living where you do?We live in Cambuskenneth, which is central for most places and only a train ride away from Glasgow and Edinburgh. We love living within walking distance to the town and several good parks- Causewayhead Park, Riverside Park or Kings Park. There’s plenty of fab cafés nearby as well.

Favourite shop John Lewis for its quality products and TK Max - I love a designer bargain! Next is goodforkidsclothes, theyfitwellandarereasonably priced.

Favourite park Riverside Park or Causewayhead Park can’t be beaten for chilling on sunny days. It’s great being able to walk or cycle to the park and leave the car at home.

Favourite children’s club/classMy son loves his football and local Beavers club. My daughter loves her ballet/tap/modern dance class at Monument Dance and gymnastics at the Peak.

Favourite day out The Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh is great, loads to see and do for the kids. Hours of fun on a rainy day and all free! Stirling Castle is also a great place to entertain the kids. On sunny days we love family trips to Loch Katrine or David Marshall lodge in Aberfoyle. Kids also love Briarlands Farm.

Favourite child friendly restaurant Coffee Bothy is a fab location and the foodislovely.Corrieri’sisafirmfamilyfavourite for great pizza and ice cream and a friendly family atmosphere.

Favourite night out without the kidsA night away in a luxury spa hotel is a nice treat now and again. I love an afternoon/evening in Glasgow having

good food and cocktails in a relaxed atmosphere.

Best planet saving tipWalk rather than drive when possible. It saves you money and you burn extra calories without much effort!

No parent should be without…Car TV screens are great at preventing ‘arewethereyet?’onlongjourneys!Ialways carry snacks and juice in my bag and keep books and a football in the car.

Parenting pet hatesAluminium water bottles, because the seal always goes far too quickly.

Funniest comment your kids have ever madeMummy, I really want a baby sister!!!

Favourite family holiday spot First Choice holiday village, kids absolutely loved it and keep asking to go back. We went to Majorca, but think they’re all of a similar standard. Kids loved spending their day in the swimming pool and play areas. They loved the buffet meals so they could help themselves. The entertainment team were great. It is a very relaxing holiday for parents as kids are so well entertained.

Most loved children’s bookWe enjoy reading lots of varied books at bedtime and the kids favourite book keeps changing! My son is enjoying Roald Dahl books just now. My daughter loves You Choose, by Nick Sharratt.

Best kids DVD or TV programmeSponge Bob is a big hit at the moment! The kids also love Xfactor and Got to Dance.

Most played with toysThe kids and their pals have had lots of fun on our large trampoline. The Wii and DS are favourites but I limit the amount of time the kids spend on them!

Biggest waste of moneyKids magazines and collector cards. They are only ever looked at for 5mins.

Most successful recipe/food The kids love making pancakes for breakfast at weekends. The recipe is so simple! : Beat an egg, add cup of milk, cup ofSRflour, tinysprinkleofsaltandmix. The kids favourite dinner is roast chicken and yorkshire puddings.

Taking kids to Festivals – Belladrums top 10 tips

1. Bring plenty of sunscreen and also waterproofs - Don’t forget a sunhat.

2. A nice strong but snuggly rug/blanket is essential as is plastic sheet to sit on if it gets wet.

3. Nappies for little ones at night (even if they are normally dry) are much more pleasant than a very tired accident and soggy sleeping bags.

4. For older ones a bucket with a tightfittinglidisagoodidea-youmayfinditusefultoo!Thelastthing you want to be doing is fumbling around at 5am with a tired and grumpy child.

5. Afirstaidkit(withSavlon, plasters, wipes, waspese, midge repellant, calpol, etc).

6. Wet wipes - hundreds of the things.

7. If you have a formula fed baby, then invest in those bottles that use disposible liner bags (the sort you use for freezing breast milk) and a load of ready mixed formula milk in cartons.

8. If your child is a little older compromise any healthy eating morals and get prepared tins (glass is banned on site).

9. Give your kids the same advice you would if you were anywhere else : don’t go off with strangers oranyonewithouttellingyoufirst,if they get lost ask for help from a policeman, a security steward, festival staff or another adult with children.

10. Wellies for everyone!
