I – INTRODUCTION to the topic and contextual background

Jesus is still giving the invitation of his sermon calling people from false religion to the true kingdom. After telling us how only a few enters the narrow gate and narrow way because of its demands and because of false prophets that are leading people astray he now gives us a final reason why so few enter into the narrow gate and that is self deception.

II – Those who “SAY” but do NOT DO (Mathew 7:21 to 23)

“Ye call Me Master and obey me not, Ye call Me Light and see Me not, Ye call Me Way and walk not, Ye call Me Life and desire Me not, Ye call Me wise and follow Me not, Ye call Me fair and love Me not, Ye call Me rich and ask Me not, Ye call Me eternal and seek Me not, Ye call Me gracious and trust Me not, Ye call Me noble and serve Me not, Ye call Me mighty and honor Me not, Ye call Me just and fear Me not, If I condemn you, blame me not. “ – Lutheran Cathedral of Lubeck Germany

III – Those who “HEAR” but do NOT DO

“Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.” (Mathew 7:24 to 27)

III – Those who “HEAR” but do NOT DO

The second evidence that the many who are in the broad way will not enter the Kingdom is that their lives is not built upon the foundation of Christ and His Word and on the righteousness of Jesus Christ.

In the first illustration we see a contrast between true and false verbal professions of faith and good works. Here we see a contrast between obedient and disobedient hearers.

Jesus illustrates his point here by talking about two builders. In here we can see many similarities but see some radical differences

Page 6: False disciples part 2

III – Those who “HEAR” but do NOT DO

A.) The Similarities

a.) Both builders have heard the Gospel

b.) Both build a house after they heard the way of salvation.

c.) Both build their houses in the same location

d.) Both built the same kind of house

B.) The Difference – The difference these two builders make may not be noticeable from the outside. However the difference is that one acts upon the Word of God, while the other is disobedient.

The greatest difference here is the foundation. The wise man hears Jesus words and acts on them. The mark of a true disciple is not simply hearing and believing but believing and doing. (James 1:22 to 24, 1 John 2:3 to 6)

A life built on Christ is what Jesus described in the Sermon on the mount.

III – Those who “HEAR” but do NOT DO

The house built upon sand is a life built upon self fulfillment, self purpose, self sufficiency, self satisfaction and self righteousness.

It is a life built on an the easy broad way way as oppose to the straight and narrow way. The foolish man is always in a hurry and builds anywhere without wise planning and counting the cost. (Mathew 13:20-21)

But when judgment day comes, the house built on sand falls.

IV – Response to the sermon

“And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine: For he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.” – Mathew 7:28-29

-No report is given here as to how many conversions was made at this point we are only told that they were amazed at his teachings.

- The most remarkable thing however was that Jesus was teaching was with authority and not as the religious leaders of his day, because his teachings was based on the Words of God.

-- Sad to say many people today just as it was in Jesus day, only watch and listen but do not decide. This is the reason why many people are kept out of the Kingdom of God.
