Kommetjie fencer makes a pointWhy would a 22-year-old student try tobalance a full-time job and his universitystudies, while travelling more than 60 kilometres each weekend to train so hardthat it leaves him exhausted and laying flaton the ground? To remain No. 1 in SouthAfrica, writes JOHN ADAMS
For more than two years now, Ash-
ley Marais, from Kommetjie,
stands alone as the best sabre
fencer in South Africa, and he hopes his
hard work, dedication and discipline
will show once again at the Senior
Nationals this weekend, Saturday
and Sunday June 13 and 14, at
UCT. With sweat pouring down his
face the now 22-year-old, Marais,
remembered his early fencing
days and how it all began for him
at the age of 11.
“My next door neighbour used
to practise on his front lawn,”
recalls Marais. “I would watch
every now and again whenever I
was at home. Then one day, his
group came to our school and I
decided to give it a go.”
