Great Gifts for the Golfers in your LifeBy Bill Hannum

Golfers seem to have a habit ofwanting that new item that will helpimprovetheirgamesothateveniftheycan’tbecome theguyorgal they seeon television, they’ll at least be abletobeattheirbuddiesonthoseSaturdaymorningorWednes-dayafternoongames. Of course, the golf com-panies are more than happyto constantly change theirproduct, and come out withthe latest and greatest inno-vations,butgivenourcurrenteconomy, many consumersarestickingtomorepracticalandeconomicchoices. Fear not golfers, therearestillplentygreatgiftsforthoseofyoulookingforideastogivealovedoneforagiftorsecretlywant themtobuyforyouintheupcomingweeks–mayitbetheholidays,Valentine’sDay,anupcomingbirthdayorsomeotherspe-cialoccasion. When shopping for a golfer, thefirstthingthatcomestomindisbuyinggolfclubs–whetherbuyingafullsetoranindividualclub, butbecareful–golfclubsareaverypersonalizeditemandmightbeeasiertostayawayfrom.Ifyoureallywanttogothisroute, givethemagiftcertificate to theproshopor golf store they frequent most, andletthempickouttheclubthattheylikethebest. But aside from clubs, there aredozensofgreatgift ideas forgolfers, and the price can range from smallstocking stuffers (under $10) to hav-ing a putting green installed in theirbackyard or office (probably a fewthousanddollars). For those seeking apparel ideas,thebuzzwordsnoware“performance”or“organic.”Mostnewshirtsarenowmadewithsomesortof“performance”or“wicking”quality,andquitefrank-ly, theseare terrificboth towearandtowash.Mostfrequentlyknownlines

like,Ashworth, adidas,Nike,Cutter&Buck, and more will carry these newfeatures. In the same line of items, agood rain suit is a nice choice, andsome, like one’s by Sun Mountain,

come in a small carry bag that canbeeasilyleft inthepouchofthegolfbag. Speaking of golf bags, the latestones are lighter than ever, and havemorepocketsandplaces foryourac-cessories. On the higher end, com-panies like Sun Mountain and PING,makewaterproofbags,andwell-madecarrybags.Forthoselookingforalessexpansivebrand,companies likeTay-lorMade,adidas,DaytekandBagBoymakeveryreasonablypricedbags. Lightweightgolfbagsarethepop-ulartrend,especiallyamongthejuniorgolfer(theywalkinhighschooltour-naments). Some of the newest bagsweighlessthanfivepoundsandhave double straps that makeit much more comfortable tocarry.Makesurethelegsofthebag have rubberized bottoms.PING,SunMountainandOgiomake solid lightweight bags. For a small extra fee, most ofthese bags can be customizedwiththegolfer’snameembroi-deredonthesideofthebag. When shopping, don’t for-get the young junior golfer. It is rarely tooearly tohookachild on golf. US Kids makesanexcellent lightweightstarterclubs, whichcanbepurchasedindividuallyor in sets, andaresize, weight and level of playappropriateforjuniors. In the ladiesmarket, thereare some wonderful vibrantcolorsingolfshirts, alongwiththe soft performance fabrics,thatareeasilywashable.Popu-lar brands for ladies are Ash-worth, Tail, E.P. For those looking forsmallergifts,agolfercanal-waysuseanextradozengolfballs. It always seems thatsomewaterhazardor fescueis eating away at our golfballs, and we always needmore. Rediscover The Charm ofMyrtle Beach, South Carolina

Myrtle Beach has risen to prominenceon good times, great golf and the fast-living ways of many of its visitors. But

the Grand Strand is far from a homogonousdestination, and the South Strand has carved adistinctive niche in the area's landscape.

Ranging from Surfside to Pawleys Island, theSouth Strand has emerged as a relaxing alter-native to the fast-paced Myrtle Beach experi-ence. Live oak trees draped in Spanish mossand saltwater marshes frame much of thearea's landscape, creating an environment thatoozes Lowcountry South Carolina.

The bold of Myrtle Beach is muted by casualcharm. Towering hotels are replaced by condosand cottages nestled into the landscape; night-clubs give way to cozy bars, acoustic music andmarsh views.

Local businesses are just that - local. You've gota better chance of finding Phil Mickelson run-ning a marathon than you do an Appleby's inPawleys Island.

The charm that defines the area extends to itsgolf courses. The South Strand is home to someof the nation's finest layouts, and they takeadvantage of the area's natural gifts. Live oaktrees draped in Spanish moss and abundantmarshes provide a landscape that no bulldozercan recreate.

Beginning with the TPC, located in MurrellsInlet, right on through Georgetown County, thearea has nearly as many Top 100 courses asDerek Jeter has had Top 100 girlfriends.Heritage Club, Caledonia Golf & Fish Club andTrue Blue, all located in Pawleys Island, werenamed to Golf Digest's “America's 100 GreatestPublic Courses” list.

Located on the grounds of what was once athriving rice plantation, Caledonia is one ofMyrtle Beach's most heralded courses. The lay-out was the late Mike Strantz's first solo designand it brought him immediate acclaim.Caledonia is equal parts architecture andartistry, a course players don't forget.

Heritage Club, located within a pitching wedgeof Caledonia, offers the same Low-countrybeauty and some of the area's largest and mostdaunting greens. The TPC-Myrtle Beach is thehome course for rising PGA Tour star DustinJohnson, and the area's only 5-star layout. Theconditions at TPC, which hosted a Senior PGATour Championship, are always superb and thechallenge is substantial.

The shadow cast by Caledonia, Heritage, TrueBlue and TPC is a long one, but they are farfrom the only premium layouts. PawleysPlantation, a Jack Nicklaus design, plays alonga saltwater marsh and offers some of the area'smost stunning views. The devilishly short 13thhole, a par 3 with a bulkhead green thatextends into the marsh is unforgettable.

Founders Club is the area's newest course anda memorable round. Willbrook Plantation,Tradition Club, Prestwick Country Club andWachesaw Plantation East are all outstandingcourses. Wachesaw hosted three LPGA events, and Willbrook is one of the Grand Strand's

most underrated courses.

The South Strand offers the added benefit of being almost as long on cul-ture as it is golf. Brookgreen Gardens, the Marsh Walk at Murrells Inletand the Hammock Shops in Pawleys Island stand in contrast (not better,

just different) to the rest of the Grand Strand. The area's dining, with a heavyemphasis on seafood, is regarded by many as the area's best.

“We've been coming to Pawleys Island for the last six years once or twice ayear,” Alpharetta, Ga., native Kelly Thurman said. “It's amazing you can comedown to Pawleys Island and never have an idea what Myrtle Beach looks like.”

The good times of Myrtle Beach are just beyond the horizon, but a South Strandgolf trip provides an altogether different experience.

More flights to the Grand Strand were added making this year the most daily non-stop flights from the New York area (LaGuardia and Newark airports) to MyrtleBeach. For more flight information visit www.flymyrtlebeach.com and for moreinformation about golf in Myrtle Beach visit www.golfholiday.com.

AFTER 20 YEARS, TIDEWATER GOLF CLUB & PLANTATION IN MYRTLE BEACH,S.C., AREA CONSISTENTLY GAINING RECOGNITION FROM TOP GOLF MAGAZINES

Recently-Renovated Course Continues To Provide Golfers With Breathtaking ViewsAnd Challenging Experience For Any Skill Level

August 16, 2010, Myrtle Beach, S.C. - Few courses in the United States havea consistent track record of receiving awards and accolades. But sinceopening 20 years ago, Tidewater Golf Club & Plantation in North Myrtle

Beach, S.C., has received top recognition every single year. In fact, it remains the

only layout that has ever been named "Best NewCourse" by both Golf Digest and Golf Magazine(1990).Tidewater entered this milestone year fresh off aseries of renovations to improve its tees, greensand view of the ocean. In recent months, thecourse has been honored as a top course in thestate by both Golf Magazine and Golfweek.

The recognition is well-deserved, asTidewater continues to offer unparalleledchallenges and facilities to golfers who

travel from all over the country. The course, which opened in early 1990, spans the LittleRiver Neck peninsula from the AtlanticIntracoastal Waterway to the tidal salt watermarshes of Cherry Grove and the Atlantic Ocean. The course challenges even the best playerswithout ever punishing a well-hit shot, while alsoproviding an experience that is enjoyable to play-ers of all skill levels.

“It's hard to believe that Tidewater, a gem amongcourses in Myrtle Beach and in the Southeast, has provided challenging games to golfers fortwo decades,” said Bob Swezey, executive vicepresident of resort operations at Burroughs &Chapin, Company, Inc. “We are very proud ofthe course's strong reputation and looking for-ward to many more years of exhilaratingTidewater golf.”

Tidewater was recently ranked in the top 20 bestcourses in South Carolina by Golf Magazine. Thelist will appear in the September issue of thepublication. Earlier this season, it was namedone of the 2010 “Best Courses You Can Play” inSouth Carolina by Golfweek.

In 2009, Tidewater underwent five weeks of ren-ovations to improve its tees and greens, as wellas enhance its view of the Atlantic Ocean. Theproject focused on enlarging, leveling and re-sodding all tee boxes; adding new sets of tees toenhance the playability and strategies ofthe design; pruning trees on the course;installing Erosion Barrier Tubing on the 10thhole for erosion control and beautification; andinstalling additional drainage in select fairwaysand greens to enhance turf health.

Tidewater is a classic design, modeled aftercourses like the Merion Golf Club and PineValleyGolf Club, and features multiple landing areas oneach hole. It flows with the natural contours ofthe land and its numerous elevation changes, which are unusual for the Grand Strand, add tothe beauty and uniqueness of the course.Tidewater has large TifEagle Bermuda grassgreens and Bermuda 419 fairways.

Tidewater Golf Club encompasses 560 acres andoffers golfers a feeling of seclusion. Each hole isset off by itself and natural buffers separate thegolf course from the surrounding community.
