One of the great perks of participating in this organization is the opportunity to get to know some terrifi c people. We have so many talented and hardworking volunteers who continue to contribute their time, year in and year out.

One such individual is Nicky L’Hommedieu. The most recent of the many assignments Nicky has performed for The Friends is the chairmanship of the annual Blackburn Scholarship Tea. This event, in addition to providing attendees with inspiring speakers and delectable treats, has raised many thousands of dollars for scholarships for a multitude of students studying the fi elds of horticulture and environmental studies. After sixteen years of managingthe Tea, Nicky is taking a well-deserved retirement to spend more time with her family. Nicky, thank you for all you have contributed to the Friends through the years.

And, speaking of retirements – say it ain’t so! Our own Volunteer Coordinator, the very best that could be at that job, Marge Hulstrunk, will be leaving us as of January 1, 2016. To summarize what Marge has done for the Friends in a few words is impossible. Where would we be during Gingerbread Wonderland, during Plant Sale week, during all those activities requiring so many willing hands, without Marge to corral us and keep us all in line? Marge will also be spending more time with her spouse, the ever-patient George, and other family. We will all miss her terribly but are grateful for the time she has given to this organization. Enjoy this next phase of your life, Marge.

When some doors shut others are opened, and I am happy to say that we have welcomed new members to the Executive Board over the past year. Judy Snow is helping in the Rare Book Collection of the Library, cataloging the books and seeking sources of funding for conservation. Diana Propper will be in charge of Bus Trips. Linda Pastorino is our new Garden Club Liaison, and we welcome John Sulpy as Membership Chair. And Kathy Kane has taken on the all-important job of Treasurer.

Lest anyone think that we are now fully staffed, this is not the case. We still have various openings and are in need of willing individuals. Several of these assignments are not terribly time consuming. Please consider giving us a hand! Call the Friends’ offi ce if you can offer us your help. You will enjoy the satisfaction of providing much needed assistance, and get to know some wonderful people.

Bus Trip: Fall Garden and Gallery Tour at Wave Hill

Join the Friends for a relaxing fall day overlooking magnifi cent autumnal views of the Hudson River from the fabulous Gardens at Wave Hill. One of New York’s treasures, Wave Hill is a 28-acre public garden and cultural center located in the Riverdale section of the Bronx. Theodore Roosevelt, Mark Twain and the great Italian composer Arturo Toscanini were just some of the famous people who once resided there. Focusing on seasonal highlights, an experienced Garden Guide will give us a one-hour tour of the gardens which include rare and unusual plants, specimen trees, rolling lawns and a beautiful pergola overlooking the river.

Also included will be a one-hour guided tour of the Glyndor House Gallery. Showcasing the work of both emerging and established artists in a unique environ-ment, these exhibitions explore the dynamic relationships between nature, culture and site.

In between tours, we will enjoy sweeping views of the Hudson River and Palisades while eating lunch on the Terrace. Lunch will include salads, fruit, dessert, beverages and your sandwich choice. Registrants will be emailed lunch options for their selection.

Time to shop with the added bonus of a 10% discount is also included. Wave Hill’s fabulous gift shop features a unique selection of nature inspired gifts from local artisans: soaps, ceramics, glass, jewelry, seasonal plants, and even honey from Wave Hill’s own hives!

Date: Thursday, October 15 – Register by September 28

Time: Bus leaves The Frelinghuysen Arboretum at 9:00 am and returns at approximately 3:30 pm.

Richard Hartlage – “Designing the Gardens at Chihuly Gardens and Glass”Chihuly Garden and Glass is one of Seattle, Washington’s top tourist attractions. Its beautiful glass exhibits are complemented by gardens and plants arranged to highlight renowned glass artist Dale Chihuly’s work. Mr. Hartlage is President and CEO of Land Morphology, a Seattle Washington-based Landscape Design fi rm. His award-winning, innovative designs are renowned as emotive, immersive spaces that incorporate sophisticated horticulture, artful detailing, and historical knowledge that heighten the human experience of the natural world. His passion for

horticulture has been cultivated over 15 years working in public gardens and estates. In fact, Richard was Manager of Horticulture right here at the Morris County Park Commission from 1993 to 1996.

His designs have been featured in the New York Times, Architectural Digest, Metropolitan Home, At Home, Fine Gardening, Horticulture, Traditional Home, Pacifi c Horticulture, Garden Design, and The Seattle Times, in addition to other publications in the United States, Japan, and Europe. Over 500,000 people a year tour the exhibition and the garden continues to evolve. Over 350 different kinds of plants and 42,000 bulbs have been planted in the garden, there are three planted roofs, arbors, green walls and trellises and signifi cant container plantings.
