I am looking out my window and remem-bering the first day of this new assignment and what I saw out of the same window. Lots of trees and grassy places but not much else! Now what

I see out this window is a miracle! Thirty years later we are a campus! A basketball court in full regalia; a playground with flowers, stenciled games on the blacktop; white picket fence to highlight this delightful play place built by 135 Binghamton University, Price-waterhouseCoopers Scholars supervised by Elliott Kamlet! Adjoining this is our Story Garden…the pride of our outdoor environment. The flowers, and there are hundreds of species, are in bloom; children are climbing; riding in a boat; popping around in the tun-nel; visiting the three bears; exploring the secret gar-den; playing one hole golf; creating in the Creation Station; enjoying every inch of this one-of-a-kind space. Everyone is smiling. I think about what this unique space has meant to us all. It houses the Sum-mer Carnival; it exudes romance for our Wine and Roses evening; it is perfect dance hall; music venue;

DJ rambler and choral site for our many talented and loved performing artists. At dusk it provides a quiet respite for the grandparents in the neighborhood to stroll or sit and enjoy the beauty and fragrance of the flowers. For me, it offers an early before office walk and think time!

I am not only looking out over a dramatic landscape change, but feeling in awe of the excitement we have created both inside and outside, and how proud we all are of the resources we have put in place to make children happy; to foster play; to encourage learning in such creative ways and to celebrate the success story that brings us to where we are today. As sup-porters, you have had so much to do with this happy story, and I thank you from my heart for your encour-agement, your membership, and your attendance at special events and for trusting us to be the best that we can be for your children. Add to that a superior staff and sensational Board of Directors who see that this mission is forever the focus.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO US!!!!

Education Programs

Discovery Kids Club ‘The place to be after 3!’

Discovery Kids Club is excited to begin another academic year! Our educators will greet your child with a warm and friendly smile each day when they arrive after school on the bus. A healthy snack awaits and homework help is available. Children have the opportunity to play some non-competitive games, enjoy weekly fitness classes and utilize their creative skills through the arts and music. We will be celebrating every-thing the fall season has to offer with hikes on our nature trail, nature arts and crafts and making Kids Club’s famous home-made applesauce! A favorite Kids Club fall activity is creating their very own ‘haunted hallway’ for Halloween.

Discovery Kids Club hours are Monday-Friday, 3-6pm plus full days on most Binghamton City Schools holiday breaks. Limited spaces available still for 2014-15.

Discovery Kids Preschool ‘All the ABCs and 123s of Learning Fun!’

Discovery Kids Preschool is all about the Power of Play that fuels a child’s learning, cognitive skills and creativity. Children enjoy learning the traditional preschool curriculum

and also attend weekly Tales and Tunes and Little Hands Science classes with the museum’s Early Education Coordi-nator. The children will learn all about the great outdoors on our nature trails and in our Story Garden. Students will celebrate the fall holidays and meet community helpers and learn the importance of community.

School Programs

We’re back to school and ready to start off the new school year with a bang! This fall, The Discovery Center is proud to an-nounce a variety of new programs, including art, science and math programs to compliment our newest exhibit, “What’s the Buzz?” all about honeybees! We offer more than 20 school programs which are sure to be a hit in your child’s class-room as entertainment and education, incorporating state standards, Common Core curriculum and classroom goals with a fun, playful twist! Since there’s more than one way for your child’s class to enjoy The DC’s hands-on experiences, this is the best year yet to buy an educational program!

Field trips are a classic childhood memory, and they foster a love of learning in students. When you add an educational program to your class’s trip, children can learn through touch, role play, exploring, experimenting and challenging them-selves with age-appropriate, topical material! Whatever your class’s curriculum needs may be, our programs are a great way to kick off or culminate a themed unit. From the five senses to the Erie Canal, we have a program for you! Cost of $9 per student includes museum admission and a one-hour workshop.

Since many districts are struggling with tightening budgets, we know that field trips can be hard to come by. That’s why The Discovery Center offers every school program as a “Museum to You” program! If your classroom is unable to afford a bus to us, we can bring any of our DC school programs straight into your preschool or school-age classroom. Let your kids get their hands on artifacts from the founding of the Southern Tier, real science tools as they explore the nature of honey-bees in a lab setting, and more as they dive deep into the subject of your choice from the comfort of their classroom. Cost is $6 per student.

Parents have power! This is the best time of year to start planning that one-of-a-kind teacher’s gift for the holidays with your PTA or classroom liaison. A Discovery Center school program is a great way to thank your favorite teacher for all their hard work, and a great gift for hard-working students, too! Gift certificates are available to cover some or all of the cost of a school program, and can be purchased before any reservation is made. And don’t overlook our seasonal specials, too. Programs such as “My Spooky Five Senses,” “Day of the Dead Candy Skulls” and “Gingerbread Math” are only available during the first part of the year, so make sure to make your reservation today!

Contact Amanda at 607-773-8661 x202 or [email protected] for more information and to make your reservation today!
