The Tribune weather station reported 0.37 inches of rain at their Wednesday morning reading. The National Weather Service precipitation maps for the past seven days showed from .25 - .50 in the east central and southeast section so the county; .10 - .25 in the central and northeast, and .01 - .10 inches in the northeast. Dirk Schneider at CHS remarked on Monday morning that the rain slowed the corn harvest down. “The moisture and high humidity set us back a bit, but it will break loose at any time. The corn crop is a little bet above average. “We haven’t seen much milo yet, but the predicted freeze this week will speed it up.” Alan Schlegel, agronomist at the Southwest Extension Center, remarked on Monday that they had finished planting wheat. “It was a little late, but we did not have to replant any. “We are cutting dry land corn. It is yielding a litter better than average at about 100 bushels per acre. “The milo is about done. The predicted freeze will kill the plant and help it dry out.” The Tribune weather station reported a total of 1.15 inches of precipitation in the month of September, compared to an average for the total month of 1.18 inches. For the first 7 days of October the station had received 0.38 inches compared to a total for the total month of 1.49 inches. The high temperature for the past week dropped from 92º on September 30, to 59º on Oct. 1 and 2. The high rose back to 68º on Friday and Saturday. The forecast is for a hard freeze on Thursday, Oct. 10. The average wind speed for the past week was 8.4 mph with a high of 28.3 mph on Friday, Oct. 4. The average soil temperatures for the past week were 72º on Oct. 1, 74º on Oct. 2, 69º on Oct. 3, 66º on Oct. 4, 67º on Oct. 5, 61º on Oct. 6, and 62º on Oct. 7. As of September 29 in the West Central District of Kansas 64% of the winter wheat is planted and 37% has emerged, 100% of the corn is dented, 77% is mature, and 39% is harvested. Corn condition rated 5 percent very poor, 12 poor, 31 fair, 40 good, and 12 excellent. Corn mature was 84 percent, behind 94 last year and 92 average. Harvested was 36 percent, well behind 57 last year, and behind 54 average. Soybean condition rated 4 percent very poor, 8 poor, 31 fair, 48 good, and 9 excellent. Soybeans dropping leaves was 63 percent, behind 78 last year and 74 average. Harvested was 5 percent, behind 13 last year and 15 average.
