We are pleased to be partnering with the innovative Beyond Blind Institute for the “Brushes of Blindness” program. Our faculty welcomes the visually impaired students twice a month to our art studios. Here they are able to explore the ceramic arts, multi-media sculpture, painting and collage while creating

pieces of art to sell on their online gallery.

In our outreach program, (ArtReach) we offer art instruction and materials at no cost to underserved populations and programs where individuals would otherwise have little opportunity to participate in artistically creative processes. Students are those with mental and/or physical handicaps, as well as those who are economically disadvantaged or elderly. Our programs bring the joy of artistic expression to those where it is lacking and also brings students to our location to experience the Museum, Gallery & School of Art first hand. Our comprehensive curriculums address the specific needs of these students. This year we expect to serve 1,800 individuals through our ArtReach programs and to offer them unique learning experiences using art as the catalyst. The positive impact this program has on the individual students and our community is remarkable, and would not be possible without the continued support of our members and donors.

To participate, sponsor or contribute to any of these programs, please contact Cynthia Trone, director of education, at (561) 748-8737.

The Lighthouse ArtCenter is pleased to be collaborating with Empty Bowls, an international, grassroots effort to fight hunger locally. Local artists and ArtCenter members will make 1,000 bowls at our ceramics studio at the School of Art in the coming months to donate to the cause.

During the two-day event in Palm Beach and West Palm Beach on February 13 and 14, five-star

restaurants and chefs will create signature soups, and local bakers will provide rustic breads. Guests donate $25, select an artisan bowl, share in a simple meal of bread and soup and keep their empty bowls as a powerful reminder of all of the bowls that remain empty in Palm Beach County. 100% of the proceeds benefit the Palm Beach County Food Bank.

You are invited to create ceramic bowls with us to donate. Sign-up at the School of Art to set up time to work on your bowls. (You don't need to know how to throw on the wheel; pinch pots and coil built are great, too, and we will show you how!)

Community Outreach

Special needs students, ages 16 to adult, create art in a group setting which facilitates art education, social skills and communication, as well as build confi-dence and self-esteem. They have an opportunity to socialize with their peers and enjoy a tour of the Museum. A snack will be provided and students bring their lunch. This FREE program is underwritten by The Loxahatchee Club Educational Foundation. Space is limited and a reservation is required. To enroll, call Sheri or Evelyne at (561) 746-3101. "Untold stories from the Art World's Vault"

by Gordon A. Lewis3rd Thursday, december 18, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The genesis of this absorbing lecture was an offhand comment from a museum curator who said, “You conservators have the most interesting stories.” And, indeed it is true – as you will see in this lecture. It takes the viewer through a modern conservation lab with illustrations of high-tech equipment and its use as it supports the conservators’ skills. Then it moves into the war stories, showing damaged art, and the stories behind the damage (one painting still had cannon ball holes in it from the War Between the States) before showing the truly breathtaking restoration results. Another is a badly damaged painting found behind a furnace in a Palm Beach mansion which, when restored, turned out to be a Monet. (Lecture in collaboration with Friends of the Uffizi.)

These are two of a number of art works with fascinating stories. The program also delves into fakes and the use of modern technology to detect them.

Tibetan Monks sacred Arts TourWe are honored to welcome the Tibetan Monks of Drepung Gomang Monastery

to the ArtCenter Museum from February 9-16, 2015. The Drepung Gomang monks are renowned for the Sacred Art of Sand Mandala Construction. There will be opening ceremonies, informal conversation and socializing as the intricate, colorful and symbolic mandala is created in the main gallery of the Museum. The public is welcome to gather around the eight monks as they work from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day creating this powerful work of art. When finished, to symbolize the impermanence of all that exists, the colored sands will be swept up and poured into our ailing Indian River Lagoon to carry healing energy and blessings, as our community joins the monks in a global message of wisdom and compassion. In the months leading up to the monks' arrival, we will be offering Mandala Workshops with Rose Shaw. All ages are welcome to participate in programs surrounding the Sacred Arts Tour to learn about Tibetan culture and traditions.

FacultyGary antonio was born in Salem, Massachusetts. He received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Studio Art at the University of California where he studied with and assisted world-renowned artists Wayne Thiebaud, Roland Peterson, Manuel Neri, Robert Arneson

and Roy DeForest. His paintings have been exhib-ited at Art in Public Places, Palm Beach International Airport, JF Gallery, West Palm Beach, and are now featured at the Seth Jason Beitler Gallery in Miami.

Carolanne Barone is a self-taught jewelry designer. After working for twelve years as an electrical engineer, she left her career to  explore her artistic side. CarolAnne’s designs are inspired by her appreciation for natural beauty and are made to create a look that is bold yet elegant.

Deborah Bigeleisen started her first career of more than twenty year in textiles in New York City where she pioneered and owned a global print design company for 18 years. Entrenched since 1998 in her second career as a painter, Big-eleisen's work is represented

by fine art dealers and galleries throughout the U.S. and is prominently included in private and corporate collections world-wide. Her paintings have been included in numerous national museum exhibitions; and have graced the covers and interior pages of noteworthy art books, journals, and international design magazines.

Jennifer Chapparo has been an artist all her life. With a grandfather that was a noted sculpture and art professor in Iowa and New York City, she knew from a very early age that it was inevitable that she would be an artist in some kind. Jennifer has worked with

many different materials, including pen and ink, watercolor, acrylic, ceramics, fabric and computers. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Design from UCLA, and then went on to spend 25 years in graphic design for advertising and marketing.

Suzanne Connors is a fiber artist. As a seamstress and a designer, she has always been intrigued by textiles while lay-ering color and combining dif-ferent tactile fibers. Her work is inspired by her time spent in South Florida and the Carib-bean islands, such as the colors

of a setting sun, the Indigo blues of the sky and the sea, tropical flowers. Suzanne specializes in Shibori and Batik. These art forms are an excuse to use vibrant colors and simple shapes to produce designs, without having to worry too much about the details –just as in life, there are no "mistakes" with fiber, and everything is always subject to change.

Norma Conway, an Indiana native, graduated from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. After moving to Florida in 1958, she started work as a portrait painter, eventually setting up a portrait studio in Palm Beach Towers. She was commissioned to restore the

murals in Mar-a-Lago by Marjorie Merriweather Post. Norma was one of the ArtCenter’s first instructors.

Patrick Crowley grew up in Jupiter, studied at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale and was an editorial cartoonist, art director and illustrator for The Palm Beach Post for three decades. He was a founding staffer of The Hill newspaper in Washington, D.C., and the Palm

Beach ArtsPaper. His political cartoons were in hun-dreds of newspapers and magazines, including Time, Newsweek, Palm Beach Life and The New York Times. He has illustrated eight books and numerous maga-zine articles. Crowley paints, sculpts, writes and works as a freelance illustrator in West Palm Beach.

Judy flescher was trained at the Art Institute of Boston and holds a Bachelor of Arts from Framingham State College. An accomplished abstract painter and collage artist, she has received many awards for her unique style and imaginative material. She works primar-

ily in mixed media, including acrylic with collage on canvas, paper and copper, monoprints with collage, and watercolors with ink and oil stick.

alessandra Gieffers is a Professor Emeritus of Palm Beach State College. Ales-sandra developed the Eissey Campus Art Program, the Art Alliance and was the Founder of Eissey Campus Art Gallery. Alessandra participates in local and national art compe-

titions. She was the recipient of Art in the Public Places, has had two solo exhibitions at the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens in West Palm Beach, Flor-ida, and is in many private and public collections.

Eduardo Gomez graduated from the University of Wiscon-sin, Milwaukee, with a BA in Economics and subsequently an MSW. Later, he majored in sculpture at the University of Arkansas, Little Rock and was admitted to the graduate school. A book about his sculp-

tural work Eduardo Gomez: Silent Messages was published in 2009. His scultptures are collected inter-nationally.

Esther Gordon, a native Flo-ridian, received a BFA from FAU and has been painting in oils and acrylics for 20 years. She was the art teacher at The Weiss School, and has a gifted teacher endorsement. Her paintings are held in private and public collections in the

U.S. and Europe and have been exhibited in various venues, including FAU and Coral Springs Museum of Art.

Peggy Strathdee Kirkwood gained her formal training at Elizabeth Seton College, Man-hattanville College and SUNY Purchase. After a career as an art director for advertising agencies, she studied water-colors with renowned instruc-tors, Jeane Dobie and Barbara

Nechis. Her work is in corporate and private collec-tions throughout the country.

Brian Kovachik earned his masters degree in Ceramics from Florida Atlantic Univer-sity, as well as a BA in Art Edu-cation and a Minor in Art and Ceramics. He currently teaches Advance Placement Ceramics and Sculpture at Jupiter High School, as well as serving as

the Department Chair. He is an adjunct professor at Palm Beach Atlantic University, teaching Ceramics, History and Philosophy of Art Education. He has

exhibited extensively, and his work is in many private collections.

Lynzie Kronheim has spent more than 20 years teaching spiritual and creative classes to all walks of life, babies, teens, couples, elders, including large groups. She applies her skills as a Holistic Health Practitio-ner, Master Healer, Life and Grief Coach to her painting and

teaching of art. She believes that self-expression though painting nature en plein air inspires energy, light and color. Lynzie paints in pastels, oil and watercolor. Her work has been shown in California, Oregon and Florida.

Justin Lambert received his BFA in Ceramics from Florida Atlantic University and his MFA in Ceramics from Indiana University. He is the owner of Live Oak Pottery in Jupiter Farms. His work is dedicated to functional and utilitarian wood-fired pottery. Ceramics

Monthly published an article on Justin’s work and his process of wood-firing. Justin is the chairman of the Lighthouse ArtCenter’s Ceramic Program and arranges many of the outstanding workshops, as well as ceramics exhibitions. In 2014, Justin will be a lecturer at the International Wood Fire Conference in Denmark, as well as serving as a Visiting Art Profes-sor in China for three months.

Vincent Lardieri was born in Florida in 1980. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Inter-disciplinary Studio Art from Florida State University and a Master of Fine Arts from Savan-nah College of Art & Design. Vincent has exhibited exten-sively for more than a decade

as a professional artist and also enjoys organizing and curating exhibitions with fellow artists. His works are in numerous collections throughout the United States and Europe.

Debora Marttinen has a background in drafting and design and fashion and design. Her creativity comes out in nearly everything she does, from making jewelry to decorating and cooking. For the most part she is self-taught and has relied on trial and error and instinct to help her cre-ate her one of a kind designs.

Using the ocean as her inspiration, many of her pieces reflect the colors and tranquility of the sea. She pre-fers using natural stones, as they are all unique and give each piece it's own personality.

Ted Matz is a graduate of Ken-dall College of Art & Design. He has received numerous awards in regional art competitions and has shown his work in one-man and group shows in New York City, the Midwest and New England. Ted’s work was included in the 2001 Summer

Invitational for Emerging Artists in New York City at the Denise Bibro Gallery. In 2010, Ted had a solo exhi-bition at the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens in West Palm Beach, Florida. His work is a part of corporate and private collections throughout the United States and Europe.

Heidi Mayfield is a mixed media artist. She is always exploring new mediums and new ways to use and apply them. She currently uses encaustic wax as her main medium. In her early artistic years, she was seriously devot-ed to the art of Batik and wax

resist. She combines the use of oil paints, oil sticks, acrylic, charcoal, pastel, wire and whatever else that lands in her path into her art. She would best describe herself as a process artist, meaning she is most inspired with the process of creating rather than the end result. She paints in the manner of act-ing and responding, often with only a vague minimal idea of her artistic destination. And to Heidi, that is what her art is about...the journey.

Cara McKinley received her BFA from Florida Atlantic Uni-versity. Although she has been a potter and ceramist for more than a decade, she still makes time for painting, warm glass and jewelry making. Cara has been an instructor in the public school system and at private

and nonprofit art centers. She has been a staff mem-ber at the ArtCenter for eleven years and is the School of Art Manager.

Peggy Pro began her love and ability in art at a young age, and it was two high school teachers who strongly encour-aged and nurtured this interest of Peggy’s to direct her path into art and graphic design. Peggy earned her Associates in Applied Science in Graphic

Arts at Williamsport Area Community College, and then continued on to earn her BFA in Graphic Design, with a minor in Art History, at West Virginia Uni-versity. After graduation, Peggy went on to work in the corporate world as a graphic designer and trade show manager, where she earned many awards for her creative booth designs and marketing efforts.

Her current and favorite position is a Home School Mother for the past four years to her two children.

David Randell, a veteran Los Angeles commercial advertis-ing photographer, opened David Randell Photographics in South Florida in the 1990s. His images of products, food, archi-tectural interiors and exteriors, facilities, people and places appear in annual reports, bro-

chures, catalogs, menus, trade magazines, print, e-commerce, billboards, vehicle wraps and digital and on-line marketing materials.

Jim Rigg is a graduate of Wich-ita State University with a Fine Arts degree in Graphics. He is an accomplished watercolorist with an innovative and unique style. "I enjoy experimenta-tion, believing it extends my boundaries, both in conceptual and contemporary watercolor

techniques. My finished paintings are projections of my imagination, and this, for me, is the great adven-ture of painting: the exploitation of areas where the imagination can take over and intuitively guide the hand. The challenges to me are inventive composi-tions, varied textures and color exploration - offering each painting a sense of time, space and solitude."

Robyn Roberts "grew up in the art world” with museums as her playground and the family’s photography studio her stomp-ing ground. As a third genera-tion photographer and artist, Robyn is naturally obsessed with documenting life behind the lens. She attended Fairfax

Visual Art Magnet in Los Angeles, CA and graduated from Florida Atlantic University with honors attain-ing her Bachelor of Arts degree in Interdisciplinary Arts and Humanities, with a focus on Education, and a Women’s Studies Certificate. Robyn has continued her passion for the arts by working as an Art Gallery Coordinator at Palm Beach State College art gallery, as well as an Art Gallery Manager in England, UK. She first came to Lighthouse ArtCenter, as a child for ArtCamp and theater programs.

Tracey Roedl has had more than 40 years in the jewelry industry. Studies with The Gemological Institute of Amer-ica  have earned her a GIA Dia-monds Graduate Degree  along with Pearl Grading and Colored Stones Certificates. She is work-ing towards her Graduate Gem-

ologists Degree. Studies include Jewelry Design and Fabrication at The University  of Wisconsin, Design

Charlie and Linda Riggs are nationally renowned experts on alternative firing tech-niques. Most of their work is thrown by Charlie who takes time to make a very smooth surface that will later be pol-ished with terra sigillata. These pots are then finished with one

of the smoke-fired techniques that results in a shiny unglazed surface, brilliant with the colors of saggar firing, the bold blacks and whites of naked raku or the subtle marks of horsehair and ferric chloride.

Charlie has a Fine Arts Degree in Pottery. He has been featured in Clay Times, Ceramics Monthly, and Studio Potter as well as in several raku and alterna-tive firing books. Charlie has exhibited extensively in the Southeast, the Western U.S., and as far away as Canada and Norway. He also teaches workshops throughout the U.S. and Canada in a variety of sub-jects including, Raku Methods, Saggar-firing, Pit-Firing, Raku Kiln Building and Throwing Techniques.

Linda has Masters in Anthropology. She collabo-rates with Charlie to create some of the unique surfaces on their pottery, including saggar-firing, naked raku, and carvings and slip designs. Linda has written a number of articles on pottery for Ceramics Monthly and Clay Times. She is also featured in mag-azine articles on saggar firing, and in several books. She co-teaches workshops with her husband Charlie.

Richard Burkett has made pottery for over 40 years, start-ing in 1970 with a summer job throwing ashtrays on the pot-ter's wheel for the late Indiana potter Richard Peeler. Burkett established his own Wild Rose Pottery in 1973 on a farm near Bainbridge, Indiana, where

he made salt-glazed pottery for about ten years. Returning to school in 1983, Richard completed a dual MFA in ceramics and phototography at Indi-ana University-Bloomington in 1986. He has taught ceramics since that time, first at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and since 1989 at San Diego State University, where he is currently a Professor of Art. Richard's work continues to include a range of ceramic objects, from functional stoneware and porcelain to clay and mixed-media sculpture.

Elio Camacho was three years old when his family moved from Madeira Island, about 540 miles southwest of Lis-bon, Portugal, to California’s Silicon Valley. As a youngster he developed a keen interest in American comic books and became an incessant doodler.

He didn’t necessarily think about a career in art then. In 1997, on somewhat of a whim, he began taking life drawing classes at the Palo Alto Art League. And the rest is history, as they say. Camacho also studied with Ovanes Berberian and, from him, he garnered lessons that still guide his creative process today.

Morgan Samuel Price is con-sidered to be among the best of the true plein air painters of today. Morgan has traveled in America and Europe paint-ing en plein air and has been in 63 invitational national exhibitions and received many national awards. She authored

Oil Painting with a Basic Palette and Turn on the Light a touchstone to Plein Air Painting. She has taught for 35 years and has a unique ability to convey her knowledge with each student. Her unending quest to seize the moment that natural light creates, allows her to draw the viewer into the moment.

with GIA, High-Fire Enameling at The Colorado Rocky Mountain School, and a goldsmithing apprenticeship with one of Aspen's top jewelry designers. She has taught Jewelry-Making at Martin County Continuing Education.

Manon Sander has painted and drawn her entire life and ran a successful business painting murals in homes and stores in Chicago, Michigan and Florida. She studied oil painting with well-known artists in California for sev-eral years. Painting from life,

she combines rich texture and vivid color while capturing the expression of the subject and the impression it left on her. She likes to refer to her loose painterly style as “representational with an impressionist touch.”

Randall Scott has been exploring the ocean and its inhabitants for more than 25 years. Countless hours of underwater research have prepared him to share oceanic visions through his art that are highly realistic and compel-ling. His original paintings and

limited-edition prints are shown in many fine art galleries worldwide.

Rose Shaw has been practic-ing art in a variety of mediums since receiving her BFA in 1977.  Her mixed media and acrylic paintings have been included in shows at Stetson Univer-sity, the Cornell Museum, Palm Beach State College, PBIA, and the Lighthouse ArtCenter. As a

freelance artist, she has worked on decorative inte-rior design applications, murals, furniture painting, and ceramics. Rose has been teaching in Palm Beach County for over 30 years. In 2008, Rose was awarded the Outstanding Art Teacher of the Year from the Florida Art Teachers Association.

Betty Wilson began her artistic career in the early ’80s as she painted faces “After Picasso” and “After Matisse” on clothing. “Made Ugly by Me!” was the name of the clothing collection. Later in the ‘90s, she taught herself to work in clay with some help

from friends. While looking for a new canvas for her painted faces, she discovered the fused-glass technique, one of the oldest hot-glass meth-ods, sometimes referred to as “warm glass.”

Kindly think of the Lighthouse Art-Center Museum, Gallery & School of Art when you are doing your planned giving. Your contributions are tax deductible, as we are a 501(c)(3) chari-table organization.

Did you know that the School of Art tuition covers only 60 percent of the cost of operating the School of Art?

The other 40 percent has to be raised through fundraisers and dona-tions. Donations also help to fund our many special programs.

If you care for the Lighthouse Art-Center and its programs, please help with an annual contribution, sponsor-ships, underwriting, planned giving or remembering us in your will.
