DAYS OF RAGE, YEARS OF REFORM: 1960s AMERICAJoin our weekly discussions as we seek to understand today’s polarized American society by providing context through an examination of the 1960s, when many of the issues and movements are reminiscent of today’s. The protest marches, demonstrations, and riots of the 1960s, set in motion the social reforms of the Great Society programs, expanded civil rights and opportunities for minorities, women, gays, war on poverty, expanded medical coverage through Medicare and Medicaid, and environmental laws, among other reforms. All this was played out against a backdrop of the Cold War, Vietnam War, anti-war protests and increasing decline in the faith in the government’s ability to meet the needs and expectations of the American people. It also fueled fears and a backlash that led to the successful “law and order” presidential campaign of Richard Nixon. Join what promises to be a free-wheeling discussion of the issues of the 1960s and their relevance for today. KANSAS CEMETERIES AND GHOST TOWNSLong after they are gone, the people who first sought out this land hold power over us. They are the reminders of our legacy. Wander into almost any Kansas cemetery and the tombstones tell stories of how generations before us lived and died. There are stories that can intrigue, stories of shootings, epidemics and sometimes even the anguish some families found in moments of childbirth and motherhood. Stones and monuments tell stories of affluence, poverty and reflect trends of a changing society. Ghost towns hold the remains of promises unfilled—a railroad that didn’t come through; a county seat built elsewhere; a dam that was built. We’ll look at some of the more interesting ghost towns and cemeteries in Kansas. THE HISTORY OF WICHITA STREETCARSJohn Wesley Hartzell believed every city in Kansas needed a street railway - they just didn’t know it yet. In 1883, Mister Hartzell convinced the Wichita city council to let him build a streetcar system. These cars were pulled by mules, so the routes were short but the people of Wichita were thrilled. In 1887, a man named James Oakley Davidson built the first electric streetcar system. The electric streetcars went to the entire city. At the beginning of the new century, after some shady dealings by the “Eastern Capitalists,” a new streetcar company was established with even better streetcars, but in 1914 a new technology presented the streetcar company with a totally new challenge: gasoline powered vehicles. Automobiles and buses eventually replaced the streetcars and the last streetcar ran in 1935. Using photos and newspaper accounts, this class will look at the fascinating history of Wichita’s streetcars. Instructor: Tony Myers, AuthorLocation Weeks Starts Day Time Fee HMC 2 9/10 Th 7-9p $49

KANSAS IS NOT FLAT & BORINGOn this trip we will head to Northwest Kansas to view the Kansas Niobrara chalk formations, better known as Little Jerusalem and Monument Rocks. Our first stop is the canyons and pinnacles of Little Jerusalem in Logan County, which opened to the public in October 2019. You will have the opportunity to hike two permanent marked trails to view the rock formations that tower more than 100 feet. Along the way you can see fascinating plants and animals as well as the fossil remains of swimming and flying reptiles dating back 85 million years. The Overlook Trail extends one-quarter mile along a crushed rock surface to a scenic viewpoint. The terrain is loose rock surface with a gentle gradient. The Life on the Rocks Trail winds one-half mile along the rim of the rocks with multiple bends to provide a variety of views and two scenic overlooks. The trail is crushed rock surface and gentle gradients for all abilities for the first two-thirds mile (3,500 feet) to the first overlook; natural surface trail with moderate slopes for the next one-half mile (2,766 feet) to the second overlook. After a quick stop at Scott Lake, we will travel to Gove County and Monument Rocks. Known as the Chalk Pyramids, these majestic formations are considered one of the eight wonders of Kansas. Our first stop will be Cars on the Route, a restored Kan-O-Tex service station. Outside the building you will see the mining boom truck that inspired the character
