“I used to depend on what the pastor taught in the pulpit as my source of

Bible knowledge.” But Raksa San (’14) from Cambodia was not content with receiving the knowledge secondhand. He sought out a school where he could learn how to study the Bible for himself. “At Hartland, I learned to dig for truth and comb through the pages of the Bible for myself.”

Furthermore, Raksa sees that his time at Hartland prepared him for his lifework, particularly his current involvement in ADRA Cambodia’s health department. He works as a community development facilitator for the Embrace project, helping vulnerable mothers and children have a better life.

“I have been working for ADRA almost four years now. Besides helping the community, I have shared my knowledge with my family, church members, and coworkers through healthful foods, hydrotherapy, and natural remedies.”

Raksa especially resonates with Ellen G. White’s statement in Counsels on Health, “Health is a great treasure. It is the richest possession mortals can have.”

“Before I went to Hartland, I didn’t have any experience in the health field. But I chose this major because I wanted to help people have good health.”

Raksa greatly values the opportunities

he had to apply what he learned in Hartland’s classes while working in our lifestyle center. Whether giving hydrotherapy treatments, administering natural remedies, or massaging clients, he discovered how to lead health guests to a new life with God.

Even vocational training impacted Raksa’s experience! Working for the farm and for plant services prepared him to be useful in the mission field as he daily encounters challenges that call for practical solutions. “I still use those experiences today!” he emphasizes.

Most importantly, Hartland developed Raksa’s spirituality as he spent time reading the Bible and interacting with staff members who demonstrated God’s love. As time passed, he became a more loving, kind, and helpful person. He recognizes that these characteristics have been of vital importance in his ministry to members of his community.

Looking into the future, Raksa plans to continue sharing the knowledge he gained at Hartland through upcoming ventures with ADRA in partnership with ASAP Ministries and Adventist Community Services.

Because of his experience, Raksa encourages every young person who wants to be a soldier for Christ: “Go to Hartland!”

Hartland prepared Raksa to use his passion for health in serving his own community.

God has brought Samson from fear to happiness as he obeys His call.

by Gillian Bethel

Born into a Muslim family in Nigeria, Samson Fidimaye never dreamed

that one day he would be studying at a Christian school in the US. Even in 2015, as a Seventh-day Adventist with a comfortable government job, it was far from his mind. Then a voice spoke: “I want you to be a missionary.” Samson comments, “The idea scared me. I tried valiantly to quiet the voice by reasoning that every Christian is a missionary, though in my heart I knew God was calling me to a life of dedicated service outside my comfort zone.”

After resisting for months, Samson surrendered, resigned his job, and “stepped out by faith into the unknown.” He began with medical missionary training at Elim Lands, an Adventist training ministry in Nigeria. There he heard about Hartland. At first, studying in the US seemed impossible. He had no money, and the American Embassy refused him a visa. But Samson persisted. After a prayerful six-month wait, he finally gained the visa. He was also approved for financial assistance from the Missionary Training Fund. God was making the impossible happen!

Samson, a published author on Christian apologetics, is studying Christian Media Ministry. He explains, “I chose it

because Christian media ministries are hugely successful in Nigeria, but none of them are Seventh-day Adventist. Also, this is the major that employs to the uttermost my natural gifts for writing, attention to detail, and a deep longing for effective communication with others.”

Samson believes Hartland is shaping him for his mission: “I have been learning to be diligent, faithful, and to give my best even when my feelings suggest otherwise. Both in and out of the classroom, in interactions with others, in camp meetings and convocations, in the dorm, in my practical training duties, Hartland has been preparing me for my life calling.”

To MTF donors, Samson says, “You have no idea what a blessing your giving is. Simply because of your giving, one like myself will acquire a solid Christian education, and many souls will come to the knowledge of the gospel as a result. Your gift to one is a gift to thousands, maybe millions. Only eternity will tell.”

Is he still a reluctant missionary? “Every day, I am progressively discovering God’s will for my life as a missionary. Life has never been more meaningful, happy, and fulfilling!”

This included set design, filming, editing and coloring, and sound mastering mini-documentaries and other projects. I also managed their social media accounts and created graphics for them. I even had the privilege of sorting and editing biblical stock footage taken in Morocco! These clips are now for sale at VideoMission.com.

“I’ve used the theory learned in my Hartland media classes as a foundation for my work at Little Light Studios. I am especially grateful for the speech and homiletics class taught at Hartland, as my job entails being in front of the camera as well as behind it.”

As a result of her internship, Little Light Studios decided to hire Kendi full-time. This is where she plans to stay until God leads her elsewhere.

“Hartland changed my view of mission work,” she concludes. “I learned that each person is called to be a missionary. Whether one chooses to be a missionary full-time, or incorporate sharing Christ in one’s occupation, or do it in one’s free time—all are called and expected to share the love of Christ in all areas of life, and I have grown to seek each opportunity to do so.”

“At first, Hartland was a culture shock that left me miserable,” Kendi

Callender, a recent graduate, shares. “I could relate to Moses, seemingly on track to worldly greatness but diverted to the desert for a time to be taught lessons that the previous lifestyle never could. It is in the uncomfortable situations that God resides, waiting for us to recognize our need of Him and allow Him to work wonders in our lives. A change of mindset allowed me to see the joy of being surrounded by nature, the invaluable gift of friendship and true education, and the conducive atmosphere to learn about and share Jesus.

“The best thing I learned at Hartland was how to study my Bible. I had been just reading it, but Hartland gave me tools to study and apply its principles, as well as the opportunity to share them creatively.”

In December 2017, Kendi went to GYC with the intention to network and distribute her resume. “I asked God to open the door to where He wanted me to go for internship, and close all the rest.” Of all the ministries she reached out to, the door only stayed open to Little Light Studios.

“My responsibilities as an intern involved all stages of video production.

A change of attitude about Hartland College helped Kendi find amazing opportunities for creative development and spiritual growth.

MISSION TRIP

5540-672-3100 | [email protected] | hartland.edu

A SPARK FOR FUTURE WORKERS

“Everything you said was so clear. I felt like you were speaking directly

to me.” My heart warmed at the words of this college-aged girl. I felt privileged that God would use me to impact Seventh-day Adventist young people like her.

The Ibalik 2019 mission trip to Davao City, Philippines, involved many activities, such as giving health lectures to thousands of public school students, sharing hope in both men’s and women’s jails, and preaching truth through an evangelistic series. However, the most rewarding experience for me was the Youth Share Summit put on by our team members to inspire Adventist young people to stand faithful to Jesus in an increasingly media-saturated world.

Heidi* was another young person who reached out to me. On Sabbath morning, I had preached a message called “The Battle for the Mind” in which I challenged the young people to consider what might be distracting them from their walk with God. God knew the specific individuals in that audience who needed to let go of distractions, and I was praying for the Holy Spirit to convict them.

God allowed me to glimpse the answer to my prayer through Heidi.

“I hadn’t heard the story of Ananias and Sapphira before,” she shared with me. “Yet when you mentioned them in your lecture, I felt guilty right away. You said there are a lot of people who promise to surrender themselves to the Lord, yet still keep something back for themselves. It didn’t take but seconds for me to realize I am like Ananias.”

Her message to me was a plea for help. She desired to know Jesus in a deeper way and to stand against the pressures of the world but found herself struggling to resist temptations.

“Is it okay to ask for help?” she questioned. “I’m having a hard time giving up a worldly life, but I’m desiring to commit myself to change.”

Heidi’s honest appeal touched my heart, and I was so thankful that she reached out. Since then, I have had the privilege of mentoring her and encouraging her in her walk with Jesus, despite being oceans apart!

This experience in the Philippines impressed me with a deeper burden for Adventist youth who want to live for Jesus but struggle to push against the current of the world. I pray that my life can be a spark in their future ministries.

Students from three continents highly recommend this certified, 4-week intensive. by Patti Barnes

“This was a wonderful course!” says Carol from England. “I think every

woman should do this course so that they can be more in touch with their body.”

This spring, we had representatives from several countries—Canada, Norway, England, the Philippines, and the US—taking the Childbirth Educator/Doula training program at Hartland College. They learned a lot during their four-week intensive training, and we have no doubt they will continue to add to their knowledge through experience. Each one expressed a desire to be a positive influence on their families, neighbors, and communities. They want to use their knowledge and talents to share the gospel message and the love of Christ.

“I learned many lessons over the four weeks, but these would be incomplete without the lesson on the placenta that the Lord taught me,” another student shares. “Jesus, our mediator, is like the placenta where the nutrients (physical blessings), oxygen (spiritual gifts), and protective antibodies (mental endowments) from the Father are passed on to us. The waste products (sins) were passed on to Jesus and still pass to Him every time we sin.”

We realize that many ladies are interested in childbirth, but not everyone

is called to become a midwife. This led us to develop the CE/Doula program, a certified course which allows those who successfully complete it to set up their own ministry. In this way they can help women to prepare for birth, and if they become a doula, can even help in the birth process, providing support, coaching, and comfort at the time of delivery.

Because our course is a prerequisite to becoming a midwifery major, it is far more advanced than most CE/Doula courses you will find elsewhere. In addition, it is taught from a biblical, Seventh-day Adventist perspective. We cover embryology, fetal development, nutrition, natural remedies, prenatal and postpartum care, emergency deliveries, and so on. Missionaries find this training very helpful, especially in third-world countries where prenatal care is lacking.

“Learning from our dedicated instructors was a huge blessing,” says Seikosha from the Philippines. “Being under God’s mentorship, the knowledge and experiences they shared was an inspiration and encouragement. This training truly built the groundwork for us to teach childbirth classes, help develop birth plans, perform labor assistance through emotional and spiritual support, and guide or educate mothers to make informed choices.”

Plan now to join us for next year’s class, May 4–28, 2020!

“I want to understand more about the Seventh-day Adventist faith. I am

looking for a course to teach me, and I am willing to pay!” said Leticia** during a telephone call. Leticia had been attending the SDA church for at least four years, but many things were still confusing to her.

We told her she didn’t need to pay, but she insisted that since she would be staying in our dorm and eating with the students, she was willing to pay. Leticia is a business woman who runs her own construction and mechanical company. She is a geologist by profession, intelligent, inquisitive, and very friendly. Upon her arrival, I was struck by her modest clothes and simplicity. She had planned to be here for only three months, but stayed for six! She was so curious and thirsty for truth that she studied her Bible and Spirit of Prophecy books nonstop. Leticia quickly rose to the top of her class!

Unfortunately, before she completed the course, she received the sad news of her mother’s sudden death. We comforted her and took her home to bury her mother, but in two weeks she was back! We tried to persuade her to stay home and come back later, but to no avail. I have never seen such a thirst to learn the truth! The Lord’s work in her life was evident through her dress,

her speech and behavior, and even her interactions with the opposite sex.

“I now understand the Bible more clearly, and I’ve learned how to give my heart to Jesus,” she said with thankful tears. “I’ve learned who Ellen White is, why Seventh-day Adventists are vegetarians, how to prepare vegan meals, and I have decided to homeschool my children after taking the Philosophy of Christian Education class. I am now ready to be baptized into the SDA Church!”

The world is hungry for Adventist truth, yet many of us are just going to church to debate, and our doctrines as a church are rarely preached. At Purelight, we are trying to establish a missionary training fund to help needy students and other non-Adventists who may be interested in coming. You can help us by sending your gifts to Hartland Institute. In the memo section write: “Purelight for Africa.” Thank you for your prayers and support.

HARTLAND INSTITUTE

10 HARTLAND MINISTRY REPORT | Vol 25 No 3

Dr. Ben Chaigne-Delalande and his wife, Dr. Feng-Yen Li, are working with the college and lifestyle center to offer new opportunities to students and health guests.

Our Health Department Is Expanding!

HMR: What are your responsibilities here?

Dr. Ben: I actually wear a double hat at Hartland. I am the head of the Health Ministry Department in the college, and the program coordinator for the lifestyle center. My wife is going to work in the college and teach several science classes.

HMR: I heard that you are working on some exciting new projects. Can you tell us about them?

Dr. Ben: My primary focus right now is to develop plans for future pre-professional career tracks (e.g. pre-med, pre-nutrition), but also to improve our current students’ experience. I also want to expand the scope of our teaching in mental health and counseling. This is a long process, but it will definitely benefit the students, Hartland, and our Lord's work.

In the lifestyle center, I’m working closely with our director, Angela Pulley, to develop a new and improved program to better serve our guests. By God’s grace, these changes will be effective as soon as September this year.

I am very thankful for the opportunity to serve here at Hartland. Our mission is so critical in this day and age. I praise the Lord for His work here and thank Him for His mercy.

HMR: Dr. Ben, tell us a little bit about your background. Where did you live before coming here and what was your occupation?

Dr. Ben: I’m originally from France. I came to the US nine years ago. Here I met my then-future wife and never went back. My wife and I became Adventists together during the early years of our relationship. We were baptized together in 2014 and married exactly one year later.

Before coming to Hartland, we were living in Maryland, where I was a researcher in immunology at the National Institutes of Health. My wife, who has a PhD in biology, was a scientific writer for the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), a non-profit organization which promotes a whole plant-based diet for optimal health. I’m currently working on getting board certified in lifestyle medicine this fall.

HMR: How did God lead you to Hartland?

Dr. Ben: We had been involved in health ministry at our local church, but the Lord convinced us to work full-time for Him about a year ago. After a few months of planning, here we are at Hartland. We love the country lifestyle here, and especially enjoy walking around campus with our son..

PRESIDENT'S PERSPECTIVE

lives. They need an educational environment where they can be solidified in God’s principles!

Our training schools are also exhorted to make provision so our youth “who feel it their duty to fit themselves for work requiring the passing of certain legal tests”2 can secure at our training schools all that is essential, without having to go to schools where they will be exposed to false teachings.

As we draw closer to the climax of the great controversy, our schools need even more “to serve as a barrier against the wide-spread corruption, to provide for the moral and spiritual welfare of the youth, and to promote the future prosperity of the nation [and church] by furnishing it with men qualified to act in the fear of God as leaders and counselors.”3

This is why Hartland College exists. We are seeking to expand our students’ educational opportunities so they can secure all that they need at a missionary college! Thank you for your prayerful support.

Expanding our students’ educational opportunities

The foremost purpose of a Christian education is to instruct our young

people in God’s truth, educate them in His requirements, and lead them to know God’s character. It includes giving them an understanding of the role of God’s church in the prophetic times in which we live. It also encompasses igniting in their hearts a passion to be missionaries to dedicate their lives to God’s service.

The Spirit of Prophecy clearly indicates, “True education is missionary training. Every son and daughter of God is called to be a missionary; we are called to the service of God and our fellow men; and to fit us for this service should be the object of our education.”1

As soon as our youth are out of secondary school, it is of utmost urgency to provide them with college opportunities that will instill in them zeal for God’s glory, a knowledge of God’s untainted biblical truth, and a passion to serve as missionaries. This is a time of transition for them. They are young adults seeking to establish their personal worldview and discover a career and purpose for their
