Each fall and spring, SAGE presents a series of Tuesday morning lectures that cover a wide array of topics of current interest. Our speakers are recognized experts from the arts, government, non-profit, education, business, and civic communities in Maine.

REGISTRATIONOLLI membership is required: $25 per year; may be paid with SAGE registration.

Series registration: $50 for admission to the full lecture program.Walk-in admission: $10 fee at the door for individual lectures. Walk-in seating is always available in Hannaford Hall.

STARTING August 7, you can register online at www.usm.maine.edu/olli.

Presenter: Rear Admiral (Ret.) William Leigher, Director of DoD Cyber Programs, Raytheon Company

In a society where data and being connected are essential, cyber security is critical to nearly every aspect of our lives. Whether it is our personal Internet accounts or our international efforts to protect critical infrastructure sectors such as power and transportation, the threats to connected systems are real and relentless. Rear Admiral Leigher will discuss how we must manage the risks associated with cyber security.

Two hundred thousand Mainers regularly do not know where their next meal is coming from, and almost nine out of ten of those are children and seniors. Learn how volunteer-powered organizations, private businesses, farmers, and schools are changing the story of how food gets to Maine people in need.

The third branch of government, the judicial branch, is a critical aspect of American and Maine government. Assuring fidelity to the Rule of Law and equal protection under the law requires a robust, neutral, and accessible court system. Chief Justice Saufley will provide an overview of Maine’s judicial branch and will field non-case-related questions regarding the delivery of justice in Maine.

The Gulf of Maine is warming faster than 99 percent of the world’s oceans. From 1988-2017, we began to see dramatic changes along the coast of Maine. As warming continues, how will it affect our seafood industries and coastal life, so central to our economy and cultural sense of Maine? What can we do?

Learn about this underground city, as well as the remarkable connections to Maine soldiers, in this Smithsonian Channel documentary. After the film, Captain Bratten will discuss World War I from his perspective as the Command Historian for the Maine Army National Guard.

Presenters: Margaret Hathaway, Karl Schatz, owners of Ten Apple Farm

In the 12 years that Ten Apple Farm has been in operation, the owners have embraced their role as agricultural ambassadors, opening their barn, woods, and fields to visitors. In this talk, Margaret and Karl will discuss life and death on the farm, including their experiences raising three daughters and nursing Margaret’s father through the end of his life.
