I am LifeText by Elisabeth Helland Larsen Illustrated by Marine Schneider

Life is in all things; personified as an unassuming yet enchanting creature, Life visits flowers, animals, and humans with her gifts of energy and positivity.

A pink-winged creature flies across each page; Life is present within

all things. The pastel-colored protagonist befriends and animates every

living being from bees that pollinate spring flowers to turtles that live

under the sea to grandparents who impart wise words. Whether short or

long, Life is always present.

A sensitive story that answers many childhood questions, I am Life is

the lovingly crafted complementary volume to Life and I, a Little Gestalten

favorite. As Life and I addressed themes of loss, I am Life embarks on a

colorful journey about Life’s magic and the never-ending search for the

meaning of life.

What Do Grown-Ups Do All Day?by Dawid Ryski

Well-versed in the jobs of firemen and racecar drivers, children are now inspired to aspire to be more! What Do Grown-Ups Do All Day? introduces to children what’s there to become in terms of following their interests.

Children often think about what they will be when they grow up; Beyond

the traditional options of fireman or astronaut, What Do Grown-Ups Do All

Day? depicts punk rock drummers, journalists, male nurses, bistro chefs,

designers, and more. What Do Grown-Ups Do All Day? illustrates that any-

thing is possible for girls and boys.

Looking at the adults around them, children curiously ponder possible

professions. Father, mother, uncle, big sister: every family member serves

as career inspiration. This is the new collaboration with Dawid Ryksi;

What Do Grown-Ups Do All Day? provides children with creative fuel for

professional daydreams and various career paths in Ryski’s iconic vintage

style and easy to read aloud descriptions.

Andersen’s magical fairy tales are adorned with engaging illustrations by a cast of carefully selected illustrators.

with contemporary visuals by imaginative and skilled artists. The plethora

of aesthetic styles presented in Andersen appeals to a wide audience from

young children to grandparents to design aficionados.

Renowned worldwide for his childhood classics such as “The Little

Mermaid” and “The Princess and the Pea”, Andersen’s fantastical stories

have been translated into many languages and transformed into films,

ballets, and stage theaters. This volume offers a chance to complete your

The anomalous animals of the African continent get their moment in the spotlight. From honey badgers to electric catfish, Animal Allstars provides factual and fantastical fun.

The powerful queen termite receives chemical messages from members

of her colony. The galago, also known as a bush baby, has especially pow-

erful night vision that can pierce even the deepest dark. Without teeth

and with a body covered in protective scales, the pangolin is surprisingly

a mammal and not a reptile. The sweet-looking honey badger would not

come out top if you had to choose between it and a lion. Every animal

within the vivid pages of Animal Allstars has a tantalizing tale to tell. Each

creature presented is illustrated next to a breakdown of both notable and

curious traits including class, weight, habitat, and social behaviors.

To further deepen each narrative, the animal’s special skill is offered

alongside its corresponding African folk tale—interweaving method

and myth. Children (and adults) will find their new favorite animal and

delight in the superpowers that these striking species possess. Animal

Allstars delivers a comprehensive portrait of the lesser-known characters

of the animal kingdom.

Animals paired with accessories elicit smiles and bestow knowledge in this larger-than-life volume with charismatic poster-sized illustrations.

An octopus swims next to a jar of ink with a quill pen. A friendly, brown

grizzly bear stares from across the page at a beehive dripping with honey.

A wise owl perches next to his prized spectacles. In All My Animals, twenty-

three animals and twenty-three accessories are colorfully illustrated with

the iconic vintage style of illustrator Dawid Ryski. Ryski reimagines well-

known animals into works of art reminiscent of classic posters.

Within the captivating pages of All My Animals, one page shows the

animal and, on the opposite page, sits its matching accessory. From tigers

to crocodiles to parrots, the animal kingdom comes to life.

Ewan may be very largeBut there is more to him than that,Like his unfounded fear of miceAnd his favorite brick red hat.

The other elephants all may smileAnd congratulate him on his feat,But Ewan cannot take his eyes fromThe mouse standing boldly in the street.

The big wide sea may be a whale’s home,But there are many reasons for why they roam.Like Winston, who cannot sleep through the night: Always aware is his aquatic plight.

So climb aboard his smooth broad back,And take a trip with this large insomniac. When the sky darkens and the moon starts to rise,Get cozy in his belly and rest your weary eyes.

Winter. Spring. Summer. Autumn. My Four Seasons follows a charming protagonist through the change of seasons and a vibrant collection of Dawid Ryski’s iconic illustrations.

Bold colors bring the nuances of each of the four seasons to life: the autum-

nal foliage in its gold and red glory; the crisp white of winter months;

the bright yellow of a summer sun; and the green and floral palette of

fresh spring landscapes.

As the pages of My Four Seasons turn, so do the seasons: the planting to

be done before a plentiful harvest, BBQs and lakeside outings, blustery

autumnal winds. And, at last, winter returns to begin Mother Nature’s

seasonal tale once more while its white quilt covers the ground, welcom-

ing slumber to both reader and foliage.

Oodles of painted images simultaneously explain daily life while welcoming readers to indulge in the details.

As the pages unfold, Show & Tell Me The World guides readers through the

nuances of everyday life. Otto, the young furry protagonist, is seen on every

page partaking in various daily activities. The previously humdrum tasks of

eating a meal at the table or being tucked in at night are playfully presented

alongside exciting episodes of riding in an airplane or attending a concert.

The aesthetically entrancing scenes are grouped into categories such

as the four seasons, athletics, the arts, a day at school, or even the mys terious

and uncharted world below the sea. Each page of Show & Tell Me The World is

filled with multitudinous details, which illustrator Tom Schamp has molded

to suit both his bold style and the ever-unsatiated curiosities of children.

This unique architecture atlas shows the most remarkable buildings in the world. Children and adults will marvel in amazement.

Mali, in North Africa, is home to the largest building made out of clay. For

the construction of Neuschwanstein Castle, 465 tons of marble were hefted

to the Alps. The Atomium in Brussels boasts the longest escalators in

Europe. The Illustrated Atlas of Architecture and Marvelous Monuments presents

a world of breathtaking buildings and their incredible stories through

illustrated maps and engaging factsheets.

For their second Little Gestalten book, Verhille and Tavernier researched

the longest bridges, tallest towers, the most impressive cultural sites, and

plenty of curiosities. Material feats are artfully placed upon bold maps, situ-

ating them within a geographic context.

JACOB LUDWIG CARL

GRIMM (1785–1863) and WILHELM CARL GRIMM (1786–1859) first pub-lished their collected folk tales in Germany in the early nineteenth century.

The initial collection was revised many times during their lifetimes, and the ever-popular stories have been translated into 160 languages.

The only children’s book penned by Arthur Miller. Jane’s Blanket intelligently and iconically details a touching truth of childhood. The first reprint since its 1963 release makes Arthur Miller’s enduring message available to a new generation.

Jane has a beloved pink blanket. Its soft fabric and color provide security

and familiarity. The blanket shares every moment of the young child’s

life: tugged across floors, hugged tightly while asleep, and rubbed com-

fortingly against a cheek. As Jane grows, its threads lessen and shrink.

Simple syntax belies the nuanced symbolism. Al Parker’s honest illus-

trations highlight the poignancy of Jane’s Blanket and Arthur Miller’s

classic text narrates the threshold between out-growing and growing up.

ARTHUR MILLER is cele-brated as an iconic American playwright for his realistic characters and ability to capture aspects of the collective unconscious. His nar-

ratives are given life through realism. JANE’S

BLANKET is Miller’s only children’s book.

A founding member of the Famous Artists School, AL PARKER sold illustra-tions to Cosmopolitan, Good Housekeeping, Vogue, and many others. Known as both an innova-

tive illustrator and a jazz enthusiast, Parker spent many summers aboard riverboats as a saxophonist.

enchantment; he also dreamt that by means of it he recovered his Jorinda.

In the morning, when he awoke, he began to seek over hill and dale if he could find such a flower. He sought until the ninth day, and then, early in the morning, he found the blood-red flower. In the middle of it there was a large dew-drop, as big as the finest pearl.

Day and night he journeyed with this flower to the castle. When he was within a hun-dred paces of it he was not held fast, but walked on to the door. Joringel was full of joy; he touched the door with the flower, and it sprang open. He walked in through the courtyard, and listened for the sound of the birds. At last he heard it. He went on and found the room from whence it came, and there the witch was feeding the birds in the seven thousand cages.

When she saw Joringel she was angry, very angry, and scolded and spat poison and gall at him, but she could not come within two paces of him. He did not take any notice of her, but went and looked at the cages with the birds; but there were many hundred nightin-gales, how was he to find his Jorinda again ?

Just then he saw the old woman quietly take away a cage with a bird in it, and go towards the door. Swiftly he sprang towards her, touched the cage with the flower, and also the old woman. She could now no longer bewitch any one; and Jorinda was standing there, clasping him round the neck, and she was as beautiful as ever. Then all the other birds were turned into maidens again, and he went home with his Jorinda, and they lived happily together for a long time.

T he Frog-KingIllustrated by Frollein Motte

In old times when wishing still helped one, there lived a king whose daughters were all beautiful, but the youngest was so beautiful that the sun itself, which has seen so much, was astonished whenever it shone in her face. Close by the King’s castle lay a great dark forest, and under an old lime-tree in the forest was a well, and when the day was very warm, the King’s child went out into the forest and sat down by the side of the cool fountain, and when she was dull she took a gold en ball, and threw it up on high and caught it, and this ball was her favorite plaything.

Now it so happened that on one occasion the princess’s golden ball did not fall into the little hand which she was holding up for it, but on to the ground beyond, and rolled straight into the water. The King’s daughter followed it with her eyes, but it vanished, and the well was deep, so deep that the bottom

could not be seen. On this she began to cry, and cried louder and louder, and could not be comforted.

And as she thus lamented some one said to her: “What ails thee, King’s daughter ? Thou weepest so that even a stone would show pity.” She looked round to the side from whence the voice came, and saw a frog stretching forth its thick, ugly head from the water. “Ah ! Old water-splasher, is it thou ?” said she; “I am weeping for my golden ball, which has fallen into the well.” — “Be quiet, and do not weep,” an swered the frog, “I can help thee, but what wilt thou give me if I bring thy plaything up again ?” — “Whatever thou wilt have, dear frog,” said she; “My clothes, my pearls and jewels, and even the golden crown which I am wearing.” The frog answered: “I do not care for thy clothes, thy pearls and jewels, or thy golden crown, but if thou wilt love me and let me be thy

This sensitively-told story for readers of all ages illustrates the insepar ability of life and death.

Rosy-cheeked and wrapped in blue, with a flower in her hair, Death rides

a pink bike. Death, a green-eyed little girl, visits animals and people. She

wanders through surroundings of gentle beauty and she tells us who she is.

For parents of children facing the loss of a family member, a friend, or a

pet, Life and I finds words to express what is often so difficult to explain. It

ends with such a feeling of uplift and acceptance that readers of any age will

turn the last page with a smile and a tear. In this book, Elisabeth Helland

Larsen and Marine Schneider weave a tapestry out of direct, poetic words

and hand-drawn pictures to give voice to emotions that are moving, real,

and, most of all, honest.

A native of Norway, ELISABETH HELLAND

LARSEN studied theatre in Paris at the École Internationale de Théâtre Jacques Lecoq and chil-dren’s literature in Oslo

at the Norsk Barnebokinstitutt. She has worked as a clown for more than 20 years in hospitals and hospices, as well as refugee camps, circuses, and theaters.

MARINE SCHNEIDER has drawn since she could hold a pencil. The young Belgian illustrator just received her degree from the LUCA School of Arts. LIFE AND I is her children’s book debut.

“Two hundred and sixty-nine days,” counts a young boy. His goodbye to his

best friend is still fresh within his heart. The support of his family and the

Children are curious about their bodies. They not only want to know where their food goes after they swallow, but they also want to know how bodies look on the inside and what happens there. With vivid illustrations and engaging texts, My Body takes readers on a compelling adventure through the human system. Exploring how we breathe, where our blood flows, our senses, skeleton, nerves, and brain, it imparts knowledge in a way that is easily understandable.

How fast is 120 kilometers per hour? How heavy are 4 tons? Units of measure are abstract until contrasted with other quantities. How Big Is Big? How Far Is Far? uses entertaining juxtapositions to make units of length, distance, weight, speed, and time more comprehensible. For example, the Queen of England’s crown weighs more than 100 portions of cotton candy. With intel-ligently witty illustrations by Jan Van Der Veken, this book helps readers understand the tangible world.

We use our brains daily. In That’s What You Think!, experts respond to 80 questions posed by children about the brain. They reveal astounding facts about the human brain and about the gray matter of earth-worms, ants, and sperm whales. The images created by Jan von Holleben capture our personal control rooms in action—as we taste, get scared, study, juggle, and sleepwalk. These enlightening photographs dem-onstrate that our brains are always hard at work.

Even before they experience puberty, girls and boys have questions about sex. Parents often don’t know the best way to answer them. Both empathetic and entertaining, Does This Happen to Everyone? offers a way to start the conversation. It provides answers to the most important questions about puberty in words and images that are relaxed yet suitable for children. The book takes questions and worries seri-ously and addresses them directly and sensitively.

Our head contains so many important things. Our eyes, nose, mouth, ears, and brain are all neatly arranged in there and held in place by 29 bones that make up our skull. The skull is a natural hard hat. It protects our brain by cushioning our head whenever we bump it. But although it’s good at its job, smart cookies will wear an extra helmet when skiing or cycling. And they’ll definitely wear one if they get in a boxing ring, where powerful punches can do serious damage. Although the top of our skull might look like one big, round bone, it’s actually made up of eight different sections. To make it easier for babies to be born, their skulls are soft and even have gaps in them. This allows the sections of the skull to be pressed together during birth. The gaps (known as fontanels ) close with bone when a child is about two years old.

Are you worried that your front teeth are too big ? If so, there’s really no need. You’re still growing, so it’s normal for things to be a bit out of proportion. It won’t be too long before your head and jaw catch up. Just imagine if you were born with the 32 full-sized teeth that every adult has — that’s 8 incisors, 4 canines, 8 premolars, and 12 molars. There’s no way all those would fit in a baby’s mouth, which is why young children only have 20 milk teeth. Our permanent teeth are covered in enamel, which is a really tough substance that’s harder than bone. Despite that, enamel can get damaged pretty easily by nasty bacteria that eat right through it. When you have a cavity, the only way to get rid of it is to visit your dentist for a filling. So here’s a tip: avoid snacking between meals and clean your teeth regularly. This will help your teeth recover from the acid attack they suffer after you eat. If you munch on candy bars and drink soda the whole time, your enamel won’t stand a chance. Your dentist can also apply a special coating to your molars for added cavity protection. It’s completely painless.

Few know the love story that inspired the construc-tion of the Eiffel Tower. Alice Brière-Haquet and Csil pool their creative and clever talents in this touch-ing story about overcoming hardship. The Eiffels live happily in the most romantic city in the world, Paris. One day, Mrs. Eiffel becomes ill. To save his beloved, Mr. Eiffel builds a tower to reach the clouds. Csil’s minimal black, white, and pink illustrations accompany Brière-Haquet’s delightful words.

Desperate for a son, an old woman adds the words “even if it is a very small one” to her wish. When she bears a son, he is only one inch high. He is called Issun Bôshi, Japanese for one-inch boy. One day, he realizes he will not grow. Leaving his loving home and believing himself a samurai, he takes along a needle as a sword and a soup bowl for a boat. Issun Bôshi is tested in several adventures and, in the end, is rewarded with the perfect princess.

From then on, Issun Bôshi accompanied the girl wherever she went. One day he would sing, the next he would dance.Time passed and he worked hard at inventing tricks and songs to entertain his young mistress. And she was delighted to have a doll that could read and think. But the little man began to say to himself that it might be nice, just once, to be, not really bigger, but perhaps a little bit less tiny, so that she would view him differently, especially because she was very beautiful.

Elsa and the Night tells the story of an extraordinary friendship through poetic language and winsome illustrations. Can one make friends with the Night? Elsa can! One day, Elsa is mundanely sitting at her kitchen table when she hears a sound coming from under the sofa. It’s neither animal nor ghost. It’s the Night! Elsa hides the Night in an old tin, not allow-ing the day to end. When she releases the Night, the Night accompanies her on a heartwarming journey.

The story of the honey hunter begins in Sundarban, a land of eighteen tides, six seasons, and where three rivers meet in a mangrove forest. After a great drought, Shonu becomes so hungry that he sneaks into the mangrove forest and breaks the golden rule: he takes honey from the hives before harvest time. And the Defender of the Forest is watching. Inspired by Muslim and Hindu myths, Karthika Naïr and Joëlle Jolivet teach children the delicacy of nature’s rhythm.

Then the Night hums a song about the moonlight and warm slippers. It empties the streets and puts an end to all the quarrels. It goes from house to house, tucking everyone into bed.
