Dr. Evelyn PresleyDr. Evelyn Elliot Presley, Academic Dean at Fortis College in Orange Park, has been with the school for seven and a half years. She brings to the table a background in education with positions ranging from Vice President of Compliance to National Dean at the corporate level.

She encourages students to consider Fortis for the special attention and care they will receive during their training. “We care about you. We care whether you learn. We will make sure you finish what you start. Do your part, and we are there for you,” she points out to her students.

Dr. Presley is “amazed at what can be accomplished every day to help make someone’s life better.” She believes the job of being a dean is a positive in and of itself – the best of two worlds: education and operations. She looks forward to what each day will bring.

Her formula for success is a product of her strong work ethic. She tells people, “If it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing it right.” And she’s always “doing it right.”

Evelyn’s joys come from her four children, 12 grandchildren, and dog Kody.

Darlene BrownThe Director of Nursing at Fortis College in Phoenix, Darlene Brown has been with the school for four years. Her previous experiences working as a Nurse in Emergency Departments in Wisconsin and Las Vegas have prepared her for her job by developing the skills needed to teach and train others in nursing.

Every day, Darlene says she is motivated by her students. “We are role models and mentors. We need to model what we expect of them if they are to be successful.”

Her AH-HA! Moments come from seeing student achievements. “Being able to see the light come on when they finally get it is amazing,” she recounts. “It’s all because you were able to take a difficult concept and turn it into an example that they could become familiar with.”

Darlene recommends Fortis for prospective students because, at the school, they are equipped with everything they need to succeed throughout their career journey. This includes mentoring & tutoring, uniforms, books, etc.

She describes her joys in life are her family. Darlene has seven children, seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. She also has four dogs, Sasha, Maggie, Makia, and Annabelle. With all that practice, Darlene’s bound to be good with students!

Dr. Joanna HillJoanna is the Dean of Nursing Education Programs in Denver and enjoys working with her team. She says they are exceptional and make every day a wonderful experience. “Watching the faculty work with the students is exhilarating!”

Her educational background includes a Ph.D. in Nursing from the University of South Florida, an MSN from the University of Tampa, BA from Dartmouth College and AS from St. Petersburg College. Her educational background plus experience working as a nursing educator for many years in various areas helped her prepare for her current role.

Her A-HA experiences are when students tell her they have passed their licensure exam. Joanna says they often reflect on their educational journey and how it has changed their lives forever.

She says her “secret sauce” for success is to keep open communication with students and faculty, which includes listening and being objective. Also, to keep the educational needs of students at the forefront.

Joanna acknowledges that every day brings on challenges, and she confronts them by keeping an open mind and always looking for ways to solve problems.

She has one son, Ricky, and enjoys playing music in her free time.

Rebecca FordRebecca Ford, Dean of Nursing for Fortis College in Salt Lake City, takes each day as a new challenge and remains positive in all situations. She firmly believes there always is a solution to every problem, no matter what it may look like.

Rebecca enjoys the wonderful people she’s privileged to work with every day and also enjoys hearing the success stories of students – especially when watching those that may have struggled at the beginning achieve their goals.

She says her secret for success is, “to always have a listening ear, a hand to help, and willingness to do whatever is needed, whether anyone sees it or not.”

She has held various positions at Fortis prior to her current role, including Interim Dean of Nursing, Associate Dean of Nursing, and Academic Success Coach.

In addition, Rebecca has held many leadership roles in nursing over the past 28 years, including being a House Supervisor at a hospital in Illinois and a Nursing Manager for an occupational health clinic. She also traveled to companies doing drug testing and teaching health and mental wellness programs.

Rebecca holds a master’s degree in nursing and a certification in nursing health education.

Happily married for 33 years, Rebecca has two children and – in her words – “two of the sweetest grandchildren anyone could ask for.”

Traci Nanni-DimmeyDean of Education at Fortis Institute-Wayne, Traci Nanni-Dimmey’s relevant experience includes serving as allied health instructor and biology/microbiology teacher at a four-year college. Exposure to traditional and non-traditional settings helps her understand the unique challenges students face, and how educators affect their outcomes.

Traci’s motivation for coming to work each days is easy – “My students!” She enjoys nothing more than seeing once-struggling students walk across the stage at graduation as proud family members cheer them on.

“I believe non-traditional schools allow students to be ‘part of something special’,” Traci notes when asked about the value of a Fortis education. “Classes are typically smaller, students are known by name to instructors, and often being able to complete a program in less than a year is a great springboard to a rewarding career.”

Traci prides herself on transparency and a total, open-door policy – her formula for success. “I can keep my finger on the pulse of what’s going on and help colleagues see ‘why’ something is important, instead of just ‘something I need to do’,” she says.

Traci avoids structured To-Do lists “because, with close to 400 students, something always needs to be changed.” Total flexibility enables her to proactively approach any issue.

Married with furry children – a dog and bunny – Traci’s favorite hobby is boating down the Jersey shore with her husband and dog. The rabbit? He stays behind to watch the house!

Loretta SokolowskyThe Director of Nursing Education at Fortis Institute in Scranton, Loretta Sokolsky smiles every time she encounters one of her graduates working in a clinic, hospital or doctor’s office. She enjoys passing the torch along to the next generation of nurses.

She’s proud to be a nurse educator and has spent more than 35 years of her life in the field. From floor nurse, to director of nursing, to staff development, to trainer of nursing assistants, to Medical Instructor at York Technical Career Institute and more, Loretta has dedicated her life to helping others.

Her educational background consists of an RN Diploma Program at Mercy Hospital School of Nursing, a BSN from Marywood College and, in 2018, her MSN-Ed at Capella University.

Her advice to peers seeking to become successful is to, “Be kind to one another, listen well, laugh a lot, be part of student life whenever you can, offer to tutor and to lead by example.”

Loretta has one daughter (Olivia), two Chihuahuas (Sparkles and Daisy), two cats (Bella-boo and Gus), and ONE husband.

Heather PowellHeather Powell, the Director of Education for All-State Career – Pittsburgh, loves her job. She is motivated by helping students realize their potential and working directly with the individuals who get them to graduation. She feels like she is the luckiest person because she has this job.

What makes her successful is doing everything right by her students and staff. For every situation, she asks herself, “How does this affect my students or student and what is in their best interest?”

Heather’s approach to work is to plan, expect the unexpected, and adapt from one situation to the next. She always has a “to-do list” so when she gets pulled in another direction she can refocus quickly.

Her A-HA! experiences are when students don’t believe in themselves but then accomplish their goals and walk for graduation. “I can’t think of a better feeling or experience,” she says. “What we do really matters. It not only changes our students’ lives, it changes the family of the graduate, which in turn changes the world.”

Heather’s educational background consists of a bachelor’s degree in Business Management and a master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction of Adult Learners. She was a Dean at ITT Technical Institute for five years and was promoted to District Dean, where she trained 12 other deans. Prior to that, she served in many roles in the education field from instructor to program chair to educational trainer.

She has three children and loves University of Michigan sports. Go Blue!

Shelley FaytakShelley Faytak, the Business Office Manager at Fortis Institute in Erie, has been employed by the Company for more than 12 years. Her prior experience working with students, provided knowledge of the education industry and has helped her continuously succeed.

She recalls several A-HA moments, but her favorites look like this: “Seeing those students who struggled with so many different issues in their lives…to see them pass the finish line and get the job they had gone after is the best A-HA moment! It keeps recurring, which makes for a very rewarding career.”

Shelley recommends Fortis for its skill-focused curriculum.

“Trade schools are great because they give you a real experience, not just “book” learning. It helps prepare students for their first job.”

She says the ‘secret sauce’ to her success comes from not just learning about the job, but the industry as a whole. “Understanding how business departments interlock and work together makes your duties easier.”

Shelley has two adult sons and two grandsons she calls her “joys.” In her spare time, Shelley and her family crop farm 330 acres, tend to beef cattle, and raise horses and ponies. She also has two dogs who keep the farm animals company.

And you thought you had multiple diversions!

Kathleen InmanA four-year EA veteran, Kathleen Inman serves as LRC Manager and Registrar for All-State Career in Essington. Prior to joining EA, Kathleen worked in the finance and administration department at Drexel University’s College of Computing and Informatics, where her experience in financial transactions and recordkeeping prepared her for the post at All-State Career.

With an M.S. in Library and Information Science and a B.A. in English, Kathleen believes in good record-keeping – “It always pays off!” – and focuses on project completions versus multi-tasking. She believes All-State Career is an excellent option for students who don’t perform particularly well in high school or traditional colleges.

“These students prefer the hands-on environment a trade school offers,” Kathleen says. “I’ve seen a number of them absolutely blossom at All-State.”

As for the road to success, Kathleen believes in daily To-Do lists. “Take care of small projects immediately and map out larger projects with realistic timelines,” she advises. “And take time to communicate with co-workers – one quick email can save a lot of time and frustration for everyone.”

Married, Kathleen says her son keeps her busy with his activities. Still, she finds time for reading, family get-togethers, tennis and serving on the board of the town library, which she really enjoys.

Eva RedaIf you’re at Fortis College-Columbus some weekend and a chopper roars up – not to fear. Likely it’s just Registrar Eva Reda who loves getting out on her motorcycle when not working. She also enjoys her job, co-workers, and the students – especially those who’ve overcome long odds to achieve their dreams.

“I’ve had students face homelessness, transportation issues, loss of loved ones and tragic accidents, yet they’re able to succeed,” she says. “With passion and a willingness to work hard, they’ve shown me anything can be achieved. Our students are very inspiring.”

A 10-year Fortis veteran, Eva started as a 22 year-old…first as the receptionist, then Career Services Advisor, and now – Registrar. Working in different areas has proved to be beneficial, giving Eva the advantage of seeing the bigger picture and how all departments work and depend upon each other. As she likes to say: “We are a team!”

Why did she choose Fortis? Because all students need to worry about is attending class – everyone there goes above and beyond to ensure they succeed. As for advice to those wanting to be successful she simply suggests having a sense of urgency in your work, and not putting off anything you can do today.

It’s advice she follows every day because, as she exclaims: “I love what I do!”

Fatimah BellFatimah Bell, Area Director of Financial Aid for All-State Career – Lester has been with the school for a total of nine-and-a-half years. With a background in financial aid for 18 prior years, she brings financial planning skills galore to her position at the campus.

“Knowing how you are going to finance your education is a big deal. Being able to comfort someone and show them that it’s affordable makes a difference,” she notes.

Fatimah believes in and recommends the Fortis education model because it allows students to work and support their family, if necessary, while getting an education within as little as six to eight months, rather than spending two to four years potentially struggling in another academic setting.

She tells people that customer service with a smile is key…and to never…never…take anything personal.

Fatimah’s love is spread between her professional passions and her two children. All-State Career in Lester’s also proud to be part of that equation.

Amber JowersAmber Jowers, Registrar and Re-Entry Coordinator at Fortis College in Dothan has her own experience that allows her to vouch for the school. A graduate of the Fortis-Dothan campus as a Medical Office Administration student, she knows what it’s like as a student there. Not only that, Amber’s still a student – this time at Troy University, where she’s pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Business and Accounting.

For a time following her graduation from Fortis, she worked for a construction firm keeping the books and coordinating job scheduling before returning to campus. That experience helped hone her organization and workplace structure skills, which she uses in her current position.

She gets daily motivation from the students she sees each day driving for success, as well as her own kids. They inspire her to be her best and a positive example to them. Her Fortis A-HA moments come from watching students face and overcome challenges to walk across the stage at graduation having achieved academic success. “It’s priceless,” she says.

Amber believes in the Fortis education model because it’s very close-up and hands-on. “You’re not a number at Fortis. You’re a person…and a friend.” She approaches her job in much the same way – with a smile and attitude that it’s going to be a great day. No negativity…because, she says, “Negativity will always drag you down.”

Amber has two children, four grandsons, and enjoys traveling with family to the mountains.

Wendy BandyWendy Bandy, Registrar for Fortis Institute in Cookeville will be celebrating her 15th anniversary with Fortis this year. She has a background in child care and customer service, and brings tremendous people skills to the table.

She says her previous experiences have helped her gain perspective. She’s been in environments with both traditional classrooms and adult learners. As a result, Wendy has made it her life’s goal to help students succeed.

Wendy is motivated daily by the chance to make a difference in students’ lives. According to her: “I feel that if we take even a minute out of our scheduled day and realize that we can make a positive difference in some way, that’s what we should work to do.”

She says the secret to her success comes from being a contributing member of a good, solid team. “I try to have a positive attitude and remember the overall basics of customer service. One will never leave the Cookeville Campus without knowing that we strive to make their time with us informative and productive,” she says.

Wendy divides her joys in life between education and living a happily married life.

Naya WardSt. Paul’s School of Nursing-Staten Island Financial Aid Director Nayamka Ward approaches work every day giving 100% and being committed to provide a valuable service to her students.

Her most memorable experience in her current position was of a student on the waiting list who was notified the day of orientation she could start the semester. The student was excited but experiencing challenges, including how to pay for school, and broke down in tears one day not knowing what to do. Her family helped her pay her student balance and she completed her program. When she received the notification of successful completion she came to Nayamka and told her the great news. Nayamka says this experience perfectly captures all her A-HA experiences working with students.

Nayamka has a Bachelor of Journalism from the University of Missouri and a Diploma of Ministerial Training from Charis Bible College. She worked in many financial aid positions, which prepared her for her current role.

Nayamka’s advice to her peers is like the slogan for Lexus she says. “The Pursuit of Perfection.” She’s always striving to do the best job possible because she is providing a service to students who are making an expensive investment in their lives.

In her free time, she pursues her dream of becoming a published author. Nayamka just finished a manuscript she wants to get published. She’s also a blogger, podcaster, YouTuber and would like to have her own talk show one day.

Jen ShestakThe Director of Financial Aid at Fortis Institute in Towson, Jennifer Shestak’s accounting and business management degrees, complemented by serving as a manufacturing company Accounting Manager as well as Financial Aid Officer for other colleges, primed Jennifer for her current position.

She enjoys coming to work knowing each day she can make a difference in students’ lives by helping them financially in order to achieve academic goals. Providing work-study opportunities to students always brings satisfaction – especially when one gets the job and is so grateful for the chance that their face lights up with joy. Moments like that light up Jennifer’s face, too.

She deeply believes in Fortis educations because graduates enjoy the advantage of already being trained before they begin a career, giving them a step up on the competition. As for the path to success she tells peers, “Be motivated, organized and detailed. And be part of good team that works well together!”

Although Jennifer has four small dogs and two stray cats that command attention, she starts each day with one goal: be motivated to help a student today. In her words, “Students aren’t numbers or packaging issues – help them achieve their goals.

Melissa FullenProgram Chair at Fortis College in Cuyahoga Falls, Melissa Fullen’s career experience began as a Help Desk technician and junior administrator for a discount drug corporate office. Now an 11-year EA veterans, Melissa says that early work prepared her to instruct students and offer them real-life learning.

Degreed in Computer Information Services, Database Administration and Information Technology Security and Assurance, Melissa has a lot to offer Fortis and its students. It’s those students who are a prime motivation for her – watching them learn and grow, then take their knowledge to career successes in their respective fields. It’s all about changing lives.

“Taking a student with no experience in the field, then guiding them through the material so they can return full of smiles and laughter and tell how they are helping themselves and their families – that’s what makes what we do all worthwhile,” she says.

Melissa believes the smaller classes and personalized attention students get under the Fortis educational model translate into success. As for the secret to success, she says: “Be kind and understanding of student concerns. Remember where they come from and what they’re going through. We may not be counselors, but we well may be the most important influences in their lives, so…show them their worth.”

As if Fortis weren’t a big enough job, Melissa is the mother of two kids, has a dog and three cats, and is a Girl Scout leader and soccer mom. That’s tiring enough to say, much less do!

Page 6: FALL 2017 EDUCATION AFFILIATES news · and dog Kody. Darlene Brown The Director of Nursing at Fortis College in Phoenix, Darlene Brown has been with the school for four years. Her

Chelsey HoletsChelsey Holets, Allied Health Program Director for Fortis College in Salt Lake City started working for Fortis on her nine-year wedding anniversary. Five years later, she’s still going strong.

Chelsey has previous experience in Medical Assisting. She worked as a lead MA, RPT for multiple specialties including general practice, urgent care, orthopedics and occupational medicine. She says these experiences made her want to teach, and her extensive background in the field gave her the confidence to do so.

Chelsey takes pride in being an advocate for her students. “Tell them that you believe in them and encourage them. Teach them to always find the positive in the most daunting situations. Be flexible but remember not to give in completely” – that is her philosophy.

She recommends Fortis to students for the accelerated pace and hands-on curriculum.

In her free time, Chelsey spreads her love between her husband, daughter, and two dogs. She also enjoys crafting and starting new projects.

Don WoodDon Wood is the Director of Financial Aid at Fortis College in Grand Prairie. He looks forward to the challenges each day brings and enjoys helping change lives “one student at a time.”

In his 36 years in the education industry, he’s had many A-HA moments, “too many to count,” he says. “Every time I hear a success story from a graduate who came from humble beginnings, it makes me smile, inside and out, especially knowing that I had a part in making that happen.”

Prior to the private education industry, Don was a technical instructor with the United States Air Force for several years. Additionally, he was a financial aid director at the school and corporate levels for 28 years and has experience as an instructor, admissions representative, FA officer, business office manager and school director. His educational background consists of a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Angelo State University and multiple technical courses while in the Air Force.

His advice to his peers for success is to maintain a sharp eye for detail, keep a smile on your face, and to maintain open communications with superiors, subordinates, and co-workers.

He approaches work with a goal in mind but prepared to handle any curveball that might be thrown his way. He believes no obstacle is insurmountable.

Don has three sons, a daughter, four grandsons and one granddaughter. He has an 80-pound Vizsla/Pitbull mix, named Odysseus, who thinks he’s a lap dog. Don enjoys traveling and spending time with friends and family.

Diana CoslettDiana Coslett, Director of Financial Aid for Fortis Institute in Forty Fort has been with the team for 13 years. A previous Sally Mae employee, she says her previous experiences prepared her for the challenging work of coordinating student loans and explaining the process to students and parents.

She is motivated daily by the satisfaction of seeing students who may have no outside support succeed with their education.

“When a student comes to you with an issue that they may feel is the end of the world and you take the time to listen, they don’t give up on their original goal and tend to solve the problem,” she sagely notes.

Diana encourages student to explore the possibilities within Fortis because it is geared toward students who don’t feel that a 4-year college is for them. “Some people are more hands-on. Our school provides an option for a specific career remaining.”

Diana spreads her love between her professional passions, her two children, two step-children, husband, two dogs, and cat. She and her family enjoy baseball and traveling to visit different ballparks.

Nancy McClellandNancy McClelland has been with EA for nearly 30 years and serves as Director of Career Services at Fortis Institute in Wayne. Previously a medical assistant/medical office manager in a multi-physician practice, her first-hand knowledge and understanding of what’s needed for a successful healthcare career is a big plus in preparing students for real life workplaces.

Having attended a trade school to become a Certified Medical Assistant, she’s experienced the training and job-seeking process from both sides. “I understand what employers are looking for and what they need. That lets me work toward creating the right match between graduate and employer,” Nancy explains.

Her motivation comes from Fortis’ students, graduates and co-workers, and waiting for the moment grads tell her, “I got the job!” In her position, Nancy has witnessed many great stories, but has a special fondness for a graduate from 14 years ago who nearly dropped out twice. Nancy convinced her to stay and now the woman is an LPN, working toward an RN. She recently visited campus to say “Thank you.”

Nancy feels strongly about the value of the career training Fortis provides. “This is a direct path to a career and includes the entire school’s assistance and support,” she says. “Our placement rates speak to that support.”

Married, with a daughter, two step-daughters, four grandkids and a house full of pets, Nancy enjoys spending her free time outdoors – kayaking, hiking, and bird-watching.

Page 7: FALL 2017 EDUCATION AFFILIATES news · and dog Kody. Darlene Brown The Director of Nursing at Fortis College in Phoenix, Darlene Brown has been with the school for four years. Her

Jackie CrandellThe Director of Student Services for Fortis College in Columbus, Jackie Crandell worked in sales prior to joining EA. She received a Bachelor’s in Psychology from The Ohio State University.

Jackie is motivated to go to work every day because she enjoys working with students and helping them become more successful.

A favorite success story that Jackie often recalls is of a student who lived in her mother’s basement, but desperately wanted to complete her studies at Fortis. For good reason! “The student is now working in her field of study and supporting her own family,” Jackie says.

Jackie’s secret to success is to listen. “Hear them out, and then help them out,” she advises those who wish to emulate her.

She approaches work every day by thinking, “It’s a new day, let’s get things accomplished.”

Jackie has a baby named Parker who keeps her very busy. When she has some free time, she still stays active and enjoys playing volleyball.

Bobby JordanBobby K. Jordan, Campus President of Fortis College in Montgomery and Atlanta Highway has been with Fortis for more than seven years. He brings 43 years of experience in education to the table, with positions including faculty, Department Chair, Assistant Campus Director, and Campus Director.

“Education is my passion and love. I enjoy seeing students who think they can’t do something evolve into students who master the material and thrive in the work environment. A good faculty member is always looking for a different, unique way to present the material in order to keep the student actively engaged in the classroom and makes learning fun and exciting. Students react to this by wanting to come to class and learn.”

Bobby encourages potential students to consider Fortis because they can get reach their goals quicker.

In his words, “We provide an atmosphere that is focused on one thing, and that’s getting the students to the point where they are employable with a good skill set for entry level work in their chosen industry.”

Bobby describes his ‘secret sauce’ to success as a mixture of a positive attitude and desire to make those around him feel happy. He spreads his love between four children, seven grandchildren and two dogs. He also enjoys riding motorcycles, pistol and riffle shooting and reading.

Amy GodwinAmy Godwin, Executive Administrator at Fortis Institute in Towson completed her own education with an Associate’s degree in business from Fortis Online. Over the past nine years, she has developed meaningful relationships with the students and staff and continues to make a difference in the lives of students every day.

“Each student I work with brings a different and unique experience. I’m thankful to be able to help them achieve something they really want. The best part is when they stop by or send an email after graduating just to tell me what they’re doing and thank me for helping them.”

Amy encourages prospective students to consider Fortis for their education. “It’s an investment of time and money, but it’s worth it. They can get a job in no time.” She says Fortis is known for producing graduates who are ready to jump into their field of choice immediately.

A grandmother of four, Amy loves to paint in her spare time. She tells people to listen to others, let someone know they’re cared about, and guide them to find what they want in life.

Carolyn Mance-ElCarolyn Mance-El, Business Office Manager at Fortis Institute in Towson has been with the Fortis team for more than nine years. A graduate of Fortis, formerly known as “The Medix School,” she received training that helped her gain some 30+ years of experience in the dental field. From Dental Assistant to Dental Patient Care Coordinator at the University of Maryland Dental School, she’s seen it all.

Carolyn is motivated daily by witnessing the success of students. “My number one motivation has always been serving as a witness to the success from the hard work of the students and the dedication and focus of all my co-workers to help make the dreams of our students a reality.”

Carolyn recommends Fortis to prospective students because she can successfully vouch for the program. She advocates for “being the message she brings.”

“Because I am a product of this great educational model and all that it offers, I can credit Fortis with giving me a fighting chance at success when I couldn’t afford other options.”

She approaches every day as not just another day to survive, but rather by striving to thrive with passion, compassion, humor, and style.

Her greatest loves are her 3 children, 4 grandchildren, and future husband, Lawrence. In her spare time, Carolyn enjoys dancing and listening to all genres of music.

Wyman DickeyArea Manager and Fortis College-Orange Park President Wyman Dickey has logged 11 years at EA. He progressed through the career education ranks, working as an instructor, program director, registrar an acceptance interviewer, before holding positions as director of education and career services before becoming a school director…all of which helped him gain a thorough understanding of campus operations.

With a master’s degree in Health Science Education from the University of Florida, he is motivated by a belief “in what we do and I am blessed to work alongside some amazing people.” His Ah-ha moments come when students overcome their doubts and fears to enroll and complete their programs. “The biggest fear comes in taking that first step,” he notes.

He advocates for Fortis because he believes no other school in the region will give students the kind of support they get from his campus. “We are committed and invested in their success.”

Wyman doesn’t believe in one secret recipe for success. Rather he believes in always working to improve. “This means I must be critical of my own work and recognize my challenges,” he says. “At that point, I can identify the steps needed to resolved issues and do it better the next time.”

Dickey is married and has two girls and two boys, aged nine to 23. Oh, and the family also has a pet beagle. His hobbies include reading and “doing anything out doors.”

Wonder if that includes mowing the lawn?

Wes LeibigRegional Vice President for Fortis in Wayne, NJ, Wes Leibig has been with the Wayne Institute for almost nine years. With a background in accounting and compliance, he always exhibits a strong regulatory understanding of the industry.

He says he enjoys interacting with a variety of people every day, and that he has experienced many A-HA moments. “From the first days of lacking self-confidence to watching those same students succeed is fascinating,” Wes notes. “Each transformation is so unique.”

Wes recommends Fortis to students because it takes the pressure off high school graduates to pursue a traditional education instead of career training for a path they might enjoy more.

“Fortis prides itself on providing students with the skill sets needed to be successful in our fields of study,” he points out. “Our graduates today enjoy those very same freedoms.”

Wes is happily married with two sons and a daughter. He is motivated every day to perform well for his three children and wife, and insists he doesn’t need an alarm clock.

We take that to mean he’s so enthusiastic about Fortis that he’s always ready to do his job.

Don McMullenThe President of Fortis College in Landover, Don McMullen already had more than 33 years of experience in private career education prior to joining EA in 2008. His stints as an admissions representative, Director of Admissions, Vice President of Marketing and Admissions, Provost and Loan Officer provide extensive expertise in all facets of campus administration.

Don’s chief reason for working at Fortis is knowing that he has the ability to change someone’s life every day he’s on the job. Through his hard work and dedication to making The Fortis Difference a living and breathing thing, the school’s placement and retention outcomes are rated “very good.”

Twice each year, at graduation, Don is reminded why he and others do this job. “Graduates and their families thank us for the education they received and the new careers they’ve launched,” he says.

As for the secret to success: “Surround yourself with professionals who do the right thing every day,” Don suggests. He approaches each day by striving to be the best at helping both students and staff grow in their chosen career. It’s a formula that has proven successful.

Married with two children and two granddaughters, in his off-time Don enjoys spending time with them…and hitting the golf course. If there were holes-in-one in life, Don likely would have recorded one.

Peter MartinelloA native of Boston, Peter Martinello earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and a Master of Education at Westfield State College. He currently is President of Fortis College in Columbus (Westerville, Ohio).

Peter’s nearly 43-year career in education spans a myriad of positions from instructor to campus president…even a stint at the Department of Education in Washington, DC, where he distributed grant money to schools. “At each stop, I learned something I continue to use today,” he recalls.

Peter is motivated to create supportive education programs at Fortis because the school serves among “the highest percentage of students who are non-traditional and socially or economically disadvantaged.” He points out that his mission is to help these students find career paths that let them advance in life. Among his proudest moments was being invited to participate in the Presidents Community Service Challenge at the White House two years ago.

A passionate student advocate and devoted husband and father of two sons and a daughter, Peter is a private pilot who also loves scuba diving – including diving with sharks.

As you can imagine, nothing thrown at him on the job is likely to phase Peter!

James CoxJames Cox, Campus President at Fortis College in Indianapolis, arrives at work early every day to greet students and help them start their day off on a positive note. He loves seeing students’ surprised faces as they realize that he knows their name, and his concern for their attendance, success and graduation.

James’ educational background consists of a bachelor’s degree, three master’s degrees and a doctorate. Prior to his current role at Fortis, James was Campus President for 10 years at similar colleges in Arizona, Utah and California. His experiences working with leaders in those schools helped him learn how to work with students, understand policies in the education industry and how to motivate employees.

James’ greatest joy at Fortis is helping students and employees change their lives. “I love seeing students go from not believing they can do their program to being successfully employed,” he says.

He advices his peers to always beat deadlines, know their students and go out of their way to recognize their employees.

In his free time, he enjoys eating out and watching movies with his wife, Sarah. He has three kids – Elizabeth, David and Candace, and a cat named Fifi.

Anna PearsonAlthough Anna Pearson has been Director of Admissions at Fortis College in Montgomery for a little less than two years, she brings 22 years of experience to the position – 17 of them in Montgomery. Fourteen years at South University and three years with Coastal Training Institute in Montgomery, plus five years at Phillips Junior College in Mobile, have given her a strong understanding of the market and the admission strategies that work best there.

Knowing she and her team play an important role in the lives of students is a key motivation for Anna, along with a graduate whose story provides her daily inspiration. A recovering drug addict when she enrolled at Fortis, the woman overcame numerous challenges to graduate with honors and now has a great job with the State of Alabama…and is director of the women’s shelter where she once resided.

Anna believes Fortis helps students succeed because of its smaller classes, strong instructors and staff who truly care about them, and the hands-on skills employers need and the school provides. She says the secret to success “starts with a positive mental attitude, genuine love for what you do, and a strong work ethic. I love what I do and want to come to work each day.”

Anna has a working farm with dairy goats from which she makes goat milk soap, lotion, sugar scrub and jewelry. She’s certainly creative…at work and away from campus!

Mark ObermeyerMark Obermeyer, Director of Admissions for Fortis College in Landover, loves motivating people to make positive life changes. That’s why he has dedicated more than 12 years of his life to work in schools, helping students, and giving them opportunities to better themselves.

He always remembers that rewarding feeling from the first graduation he attended. He saw how students had changed so much from when they initially visited the school. “I saw completely different people that were confident, proud and ready to tackle anything in their path,” he remembers.

Mark enjoys spending time with everyone he works with. He calls his co-workers his “second family.” He also enjoys meeting new people and providing opportunities to help those who are looking to better their lives.

To be positive and supportive of each other is the advice he has for his peers. Mark contends that you must believe in what you do to be successful.

Josh WhiteJosh White, Director of Admission at Fortis College in Columbus has been with the school for over 11 years. He brings a Bachelor’s degree in Communication Disorders and five prior years of Admissions to the table. His previous experiences introduced him to the world of working with both high school and adult learners.

Josh’s daily motivation comes from the inspiring people he works with, students and staff. He savors the moments when former students call after graduation to catch up and thank him for his contribution to their success.

Josh approaches each day one at a time. “I come in with the right attitude and try to accomplish the goal at hand,” he says.

He recommends Fortis to prospective students because they become part of a family environment with caring instructors and successful outcomes.

Josh finds joy playing sports, and with his three children and his wife.

Sunny BhatiaSunny Bhatia, Director of Admissions for Fortis College in Cuyahoga Falls has a seven-year background in admissions management and operations management. Prior experiences have allowed Sunny to become systematic in nature.

“My main motivation to come to work every day is the passion to help students and my employees. I am a servant leader who takes great pride in the success of our students and employees.”

Sunny encourages people to always treat others with the utmost respect.

“The biggest A-HA moment for me was when I was working with students who were immigrants from India. Their feedback was amazing. They said the reason they chose our school was because of our employees and how we made them feel. Bottom line: people remember how you make them feel.”

Sunny wants prospective students to consider Fortis because the training that student receive is career-focused. When students leave Fortis, they are ready to start working in their industry of choice. They are confident and ready to take on new challenges.

“Passion and discipline drive our business. Have a game plan every day before you leave for the next day. Inspect what you expect daily.”

Dionna JonesThe Director of Admissions at Fortis College in Indianapolis, Dionna Renee Jones already had more than eight years of experience in admissions prior to joining EA. Dionna says admissions was something she learned from the ground up, but her desire to succeed and grow led her to where she is today.

Understanding that all students hope to achieve success is what has helped Dionna prosper in this industry. She says she shows her students, “You can achieve even your loftiest goals despite any previous challenges, no matter where you start.”

Her secret to achieving the goals she has set for herself is to remain focused. To Dionna that is the key. “It’s all in your thinking. Have a vision for your life and outcome, and you will succeed,” she says. Despite one’s best plans, Dionna acknowledges things won’t always go as you want them to; however, she believes having faith and putting in the work is the best one can do in certain circumstances. “But, always continue to do your absolute best,” she says.

Dionna is an extrovert and a very spontaneous human being, but she also enjoys having time to ponder, reflect and pray. She enjoys singing, performing, producing and “experiencing life as it comes.”

Diane McQuillanAston, PA, resident Diane McQuillan serves as Director of Career Services at All-State Career in Lester. Diane began as an Admissions Representative in 1999, moving into the Placement Department before leaving in 2002. She returned in 2011 as a Career Services Advisor and was promoted the following year to Director of Career Services.

Diane has an A.A.S. in Legal/Accounting Paraprofessional, but comes from a family rooted in the CDL industry. Her positions at All-State have allowed her to explore DOT laws and regulations along with the process of launching a CDL career, as well as gaining a working knowledge of welding.

Her reasons for working at All-State are many – short-term training and financial aid to qualified students; ongoing job placement assistance; hands-on training; and being an accredited, licensed school. It all boils down to this: “People depend on you to help improve their lives.” That’s why she’s always re-evaluating herself and asking how she can improve.

A simple “thank you” from working grads means the world to Diane. She sees lots of student success stories on social media, from new family homes to family vacations and feels proud every time. Other sources of pride are her daughter…and son, who just completed the HVAC program at the Essington campus and starts his new career in June. Congrats, Diane!

Melissa LewisThe Business Manager at Fortis Institute in Cookeville, Melissa Lewis has been part of the EA family for 16 years. Prior to joining the education provider, she was an apartment community assistant manager, where she learned the importance of good customer service while receiving collections and preparing accounting reports.

Melissa comes to work each day armed with a plan of action for what needs to be completed, and praises her office team for…in her words…“their commitment to the school’s goal of seeing that students complete their program and find a career in which they are successful.”

She says graduation is a particularly wonderful day because, “Not only do you see graduates excited about what they’ve accomplished, but proud families as well.” Melissa attributes much of that success to the Fortis Difference – providing students with great customer service and hands-on training that often leads to employment at externship sites.

Regarding success, Melissa says it’s important to work together, as a team, and communicate effectively with others in order to help students achieve their goals.

Married for 14 years, Melissa and her husband have two ‘rescue’ furbabies, Bella and Sophia, with whom they enjoy spending their free time.

Marci StoneMarci Stone, Director of Career Services at Fortis College in Salt Lake City started as a General Education Instructor. She holds a Master’s in Business and is currently perusing a Doctorate. She says that sometimes every graduate needs to be pushed a little. Developing a relationship with students and knowing which ones need to be pushed…and when…helps her keep students encouraged.

She says her “secret sauce” to success is staying organized. “I’m constantly reviewing processes and improving them.”

Her approach to daily work consists of flexibility and learning to roll with tough situations. “There was a time I came in expecting to get some paperwork done, but was invited to an HVAC open house that had already started. I grabbed some business cards and rushed over. I was able to meet numerous employers...some I knew and a few I didn’t.”

Marci has been with Fortis for seven years and says the students motivate her every day. “I feel as though I’m making a difference in their lives. Plus, I have a passion for learning.”

Laura JordanLaura Jordan, Director of Career Services at Fortis College in Norfolk, is one of the newer members of the Fortis family. She previously worked for four years in career services and has a background in recruiting.

“It’s given me strong knowledge from an employer’s perspective on interviewing techniques and what impresses an employer. That helps prepare graduates to be more successful in their job hunt. It also helped me develop strong contacts within the community.”

Laura recalls a particular moment when she really understood she was in the business of changing lives.

“One of my recent HVAC graduates called me after accepting a Technician position and thanked me for teaching him how to interview. He then talked about how he never thought he could make it to school, finish his schooling, or learn how to conduct himself for an interview and come equipped with a well-prepared resume. He said Fortis College changed his life for the better. It’s moments like those that help me see the value in what I do for our students.”

She tells people to take each day as it comes and always have a plan. She adds “That being said, be prepared to deviate if needed!”

Flexible and adaptive are terms that suit Laura well.

Lynn SalvageLynn D. Salvage, Director of Career Services for the St. Paul’s School of Nursing – Staten Island campus has been with Fortis for seven-and-a-half years. Coming from a background of executive recruiting, she gained valuable skills and insight into how the employment process works.

Lynn is motivated daily by working to get students on the path to career success. “We’ve seen students who have challenges such as time pressure or financial constraints. When an employed, successful graduate comes back to see us after overcoming these challenges, it’s truly an amazing moment.”

Lynn encourages student to pursue their career training at St. Paul’s because they can complete the program quickly and have a competitive advantage in the field. Other colleges may require longer tracks, which sometimes also drive up the cost of the program.

She tells people to “stick with it” at every orientation. “I always see the glass as half-full and feel challenges are there to be met and overcome.”

Lynn spreads her joy between her adult son, Andrew, and her love for sports, including figure skating, cycling, skiing and in-line skating. But skating around work obligations…that’s not in her vocabulary.

Tracey BrockIt’s been quite the journey for Tracey Brock…from Long Beach, California, to Fortis College in Cincinnati, with stops as general store manager for Kmart and a competitor in between. During the journey, Tracey also picked up an MBA and excellent customer service and communication skills, all of which are very valuable in her job as the Campus Director of Admissions.

She comes to work each day knowing she has the capacity to make a difference in the lives of staff and students through her support and understanding. And when one of those students returns to thank her for the encouragement she provided – it’s one of her favorite A-HA! moments and she knows it’s all worth the effort.

She embraces the great hands-on experience a school like Fortis provides, calling it “great career preparation.” Key keys to success are time management and teamwork, along with coming to work each day with a positive attitude and goals in mind.

Married, Tracey enjoys traveling and boating with her husband when she’s away from campus. When she’s one the job, those daily goals command most of her attention.

Congratulations on nine years at EA! Here’s hoping there are many, many more.

Marlin FokusorgborBorn in England, Marlin Fokusorgbor is Director of Finance at St. Paul’s School of Nursing in Queens. She brings more than 20 years of experience in proprietary and traditional higher education to the school, including stints as campus president and other leadership roles.

Marlin’s extensive knowledge enables her to adapt to evolving environments, strategize best practices, and implement solutions that benefit students and the campus. “My background gives me an enhanced view of the intricate details that impact the daily operations of the school,” she says.

She believes the for-profit approach St. Paul’s embraces offers students an accelerated path to becoming productive members of society in a succinct, flexible manner.

Her advice for success is: “Learn as much as possible, including in areas that intersect with your own focus. That way, you can provide valuable input regarding all aspects of your students’ lives.”

Marlin’s most prized possessions are her husband and two children, Olivia and David, but St. Paul’s students receive her utmost attention as well.
