INSPIRED BY OUR PASTLOOKING TOWARDOUR FUTURE
W elcome back! As we begin our 123rd year at Third Street, I am so proud to be engaged in this community not only as executive director, but as a student and parent. Working alongside our exceptional faculty, hard-working staff, and a committed board of
directors and advisory council, we are able to serve nearly 6,000 students of all ages and backgrounds throughout NYC.
Third Street’s founder Emilie Wagner established the school in 1894 with the pioneering belief that arts education was both critical to the development of a child, and an effective tool for strengthening a society. Our programs today are inspired by our deep roots—and underscored by our fundamental belief that arts education is a right, not a privilege.
As we evolve to keep pace with our dynamic city, the demands of 21st century music-making, and to contend with threats to arts-related funding, it is our goal to engage students in the joys of music making and dance, and to connect families to high quality arts education regardless of socio-economic background and artistic experience. We make this connection both at our historic East Village home and through our Partners program, which sends our talented teaching artists into schools and community centers throughout the City.
As we grow, Third Street also has expanded its reach through partnerships with neighborhood and cultural organizations like the Girl Scouts, Campos Plaza Public Housing and St. Mark's Church-in-the-Bowery. We’ve introduced new offerings like sound recording, musical theatre, a Preschool Instrument Program, and expanded adult ensembles; we've also renovated our performance and community spaces to accommodate all of our exciting progress.
I am continually enamored with, in awe of, and grateful for the Third Street community. I believe that together, we’re doing more than building a love for music and dance. We’re fostering a kinder and more generous society.
Thank you for being part of our community. I look forward to seeing you around the halls or in the neighborhood!

On May 8, more than 400 members of our community celebrated our 122nd anniversary at Capitale on the Lower East Side, enjoying an evening
of cocktails, dinner, a live and silent auction and unparalleled student performances by P.S. 110 drummers, Third Street’s Twinklers and Brooklyn Stafford.
This year, Third Street was pleased to honor our Director of Safety, Beverly Harper, Clarfeld Financial Advisors and Grammy Award-winning group, The Roots, featuring our very own Third Street alum and trumpeter, Dave Guy.
Actor and comedian Rachel Dratch, the evening’s master of ceremonies was joined by celebrity auctioneer CK Swett, who helped raise additional funds to support our work.
We are so grateful to those who joined us in our shared vision to make music and dance education accessible to all. We couldn't do it without you, and can't wait to see you again next year!

"Five years ago, a ragged little girl came to us and applied for violin lessons ... At the time this child commenced her musical work her family lived in dark, sordid rooms and had fallen into careless, ambitionless state. The little girl's playing soon awakened in them a desire for better things. Her father's memory was stirred with thoughts of what he had once been in his youth at home, his self-respect and ambition were revived, and now he is a prosperous wage-earner."
– written by Third Street Music School founder, Emilie Wagner in 1900
Third Street always has been more than a music school. As New York's first music settlement, Third Street was an oasis from an infamous neighborhood synonymous with immigration and intense poverty. But the Lower East Side
community also was filled with hope, creativity and activism. When trailblazing Third Street founder Emilie Wagner started teaching piano
and violin in a temple basement on the Lower East Side in 1894, she instantly created a refuge for students to expand their minds beyond the challenges of their everyday lives. By 1915, Emilie's vision of providing accessible, affordable arts education to people of all backgrounds had inspired similar music school settlements in thirty American cities.
As part of the settlement house movement of the late 19th-early 20th century, Third Street once filled the gap where social services were lacking. Third Street offered an extensive library of books and music, a rooftop playground, a summer camp, and provided help with housing, employment and basic medical assistance. It even offered public baths in addition to music lessons.
The original settlement house workers were fervent community organizers, often the voice of the poor, fighting for tenement reform laws, child labor laws and workers' rights, while the buildings in which they often resided served as centers for social gatherings and other activity.
Many social services were absorbed by the creation of governmental agencies after WWII; but today, we are inspired by our settlement roots.

"In a world of different tongues and accents, in a world filled with different languages, in a world filled with different religions andcustoms — an F sharp is universal"
– Calmen Flesig, Third Street Student in 1915

More Than a Century Later…Nearly 125 years after that first music lesson, our mission has remained the
same. Third Street's programming is designed to meet community demand, whether that has meant creating an arts-infused preschool, offering sound recording for teens, or music instruction for people 50 and better through our New Horizons band.
Beyond our flagship building, Third Street's Partners program—created in 1983 to meet a dire need for arts programming in public schools amidst budget cuts—today provides access to the arts to more than 4,150 students. The partners program sends teaching artists into 29 schools and community centers—many of which are located in federally designated poverty areas, such as Campos Plaza, to teach much-needed dance and music classes. As families struggle and threats to arts funding continue, we also actively recruit students from public schools to receive lessons at Third Street's 11th Street location through our Partners@3rd program, which provides customized guidance and support to guardians and students for whom it is often their first exposure to the arts.
We believe that a nurturing environment and an inclusive approach to music and dance training can help students develop creativity and critical thinking; it can also build self-confidence and contribute to their long-term advancement as artists, as individuals and as members of society. That's why we provide more than 75% of our nearly 6,000 students with need-based financial aid, merit- based scholarships and free or low-cost exemplary instruction.
In true New York City (or Lower East Side or Emilie Wagner) fashion, and in tribute to our heritage, we hope to build an ever-stronger, ever-more inclusive community of trailblazers, and a whole lot of dreamers of all ages.

Third Street's Greatest Hits — Our Alumni!
At the ages of 8 and 10-years-old, three boys formed Houston, one of Third Street’s most beloved rock bands. It all started when brothers, Jackson
and Nate Rheingold, and fellow-student, Boris Gachot rocked the house at PS 41's annual talent show. Five years later, the group is writing its own music every week at Third Street.
“The boys love to do covers of their favorite artists but they really enjoy making their own stuff,” says Amy, Jackson and Nate's mother.
With the help of Third Street's Rock Band program, summer Rock Band work-shops and their “favorite teacher ever,” David Moreno, the Houston boys have grown into dedicated musicians, singers, songwriters and artists. With Nate on drums, Jackson on vocals and guitar, and Boris on vocals and
bass, Houston has a distinct sound for the younger generation that is also enjoyed by Third Street community members of all ages.
Recently, the band performed at our Annual Holiday Concert at Skirball Center for the Performing Arts and also at our ribbon cutting celebration to mark the completion of our renovation this past March.
With hit songs like “Animals on Vehicles” and “Get Off My Case,” Houston's fan base has even reached elected officials like Rosie Méndez, who instantly took to Twitter to boast about her excitement from their performance. Rock on, Houston!

Congratulations to Third Street tap dance faculty member Yvonne Curry, also known as Miss Yvonne,
who was recently awarded a Graduate Degree from New York University and the Graduate Interdisciplinary Academic Excellence Award for the Class of 2017. She completed her thesis titled Seen Your Life, which shares a variety of stories about people in the New York City community through
music, dialogue, and movement. Yvonne joined our faculty
in 1996, and has been transforming lives for nearly two decades through tap and jazz, building uniquely strong
connections with her students, who come back to
watch her perform and even jump in the act on a few numbers.
It is an honor to have her as a part of the Third Street family.

So much amazing artistry fills the studios and hallways of Third Street, led by more than 130 highly committed and gifted music and
dance faculty members. For more than 30 years, we have proudly presented LiveSOUNDS (formerly known as the Artist Performance Series), a concert series to showcase our teaching artists.
The vibrant history of LiveSOUNDS started with Beth Flusser, Third Street’s former Director of Community Affairs and Concerts, who created the series as a platform for faculty performance and as a means of fostering a musical connection between Third Street and our Lower East Side community. Flusser had a penchant for opera, and one of the first concerts in the series was an opera titled “Passion in Pigskin,” a comedic, football-themed love story written and directed by former guitar faculty member Michael Lydon and his wife, pianist Ellen Mandel.
Lydon recalls the joy of performing “an evening free of commercial pressure of any kind,” and fondly remembers the series as “an off-the-beaten-path opportunity. We had much more artistic freedom in these concerts than we ever would in other gigs.”
This creative freedom, coupled with Third Street’s handling of publicity, logistics, and venue costs for all concerts, made LiveSOUNDS a dream opportunity for our faculty and brought together students and teachers.
An equally important player in the evolution of LiveSOUNDS was piano faculty member and former piano department chair Margaret Mills, who produced the series for several years following Flusser’s retirement. Mills’ passion for the series stemmed from its goal of providing “a warm and welcoming musical gathering place” for Third Street students, faculty, and our community, and she remains involved in LiveSOUNDS to this day.
So what can we expect for this season of LiveSOUNDS? More than 20 free concerts featuring a host of talented artists, a warm sense of Third Street community, and perfor-mances of the highest caliber. It’s the best free Friday night concert this side of town! We hope you will join us!

We all know how much preschoolers love to sing and move to music! Now, we are learning just how much music actually shapes
a young child's mind, developing and enhancing the skills they will use throughout their lives.
In fact, research tells us that regular engagement with music enables preschool- age children to construct powerful thought networks that fortify future learning in realms such as language, mathematical thinking, and creative expression.
“Music molds the mind,” wrote Dr. Susan Barry, professor of neurobiology at Mount Holyoke College1.“As young children participate in music-based activities, their muscles, senses, and intellect are engaged simultaneously; they are exercising their brains in ways they rarely do. Long-term musical training actually re-organizes the brain.”
Third Street's arts-infused preschool curriculum is carefully designed to enable students to make connections across disciplines, to learn about musical instruments, and to develop thoughtful
awareness of themselves and others. Young music makers develop self- discipline, social skills, and cultural aware-ness; their confidence and self-esteem grow along with their competence.
Our preschoolers are always singing—whether they're seated together on a rug, traveling throughout the building, or pausing during a busy day. They make songs their own by playing with rhyme and rhythm, building a class repertoire of favorite songs for sing-alongs. During music class, children experience and enact contrasting tones and tempos, and movement class allows them to interpret live piano music both as a group and individually. For those who show interest, the new Preschool Instrument Program (PIP) offers individual instruction in piano or violin to older preschool students.
When children step into the Third Street Preschool's uniquely rich musical setting, they enter a world of playfulness, spontaneity, and joy that jumpstarts their journey toward musicianship, a life-long love of music and other successes. And, they have a ton of fun!
Third Street Preschool: A S C H O O L W I T H R H Y T H M
When young children engage deeply with quality music experiences, they enrich their learning and their lives for years to come.

THANK YOU!Third Street programs are supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council. Third Street programs are also made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.
We are grateful to the many individuals, foundations, corporations and government agencies that make Third Street’s programs possible through their generous support.
Earlier this year, we bid a sad farewell to Anna-Maria Kellen, a long-time champion, board member, and benefactor of Third Street Music School Settlement. She passed away on April 9, 2017 at the age of 98. Mrs. Kellen’s commitment to Third Street remains unparalleled, having served over a span of 25 years on the board of the directors, including 14 years as board chair. Third Street thrives today because of her exceptional leadership, extraordinary generosity and tireless dedication to advancing
arts education in our community. Over the course of her life, Mrs. Kellen received international recognition for her philanthropic and cultural efforts. She served as a nurse’s aide for the Red Cross, as a member of the New York City Commission for Cultural Affairs, co-chaired the Mayor’s Award of Honor for Arts and Culture, and became a trustee of notable cultural institutions like the American Academy in Berlin, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Morgan Library and National Gallery of Art in Washington. Third Street owes so much to Mrs. Kellen, whose outstanding vision and leadership saw this organization through times of great opportunity and great challenge. Mrs. Kellen’s legacy will live on with every note played and through every student we teach. She will continue to be an inspiration to Third Street students every time they enter our Concert Hall that proudly bears her name.
