PRESIDENT’S REPORT

When looking to start off writing this year’s President’s Report I reviewed all the fabulous team and individual performances, and all the many and varied events that took place over another hectic season. I was looking for a defining moment to hang the season on and then it occurred to me that perhaps the most significant event, and one that underpins all those above is that 2013/14 marks the tenth year in office of the current committee.

The team I have the pleasure and honour of operating with, Messrs. Jackson, Minnett and Horstead have been together now for a decade. It is due to their dedication, integrity and passion for the game and the club that we have been able to handle our onerous responsibilities. We’ve also managed to facilitate a great array of cricket activity and social events including three tours to England. Serving in position for even longer than a decade has been Vicki Carden who has been a virtual team within a team, almost single handedly organizing all aspects of our now large Junior club. With youngest son Jake now having graduated from the junior ranks, Vicki is understandably looking to scale back on her involvement. This, together with the loss of delegates Brenden Ball (QLD) and Dom Wheeler (Rep Cricket), and ever increasing demands placed on volunteer community organisations we are struggling to cover off all that needs doing. I appeal to everyone involved with our Club to consider how they can pitch in to help, whether it be on the committee, taking up a supporting role such as MyCricket Coordinator or organising a single activity (eg Pink Stumps Day, Friday Night BBQ coordinator etc). Your help even on a single day can enable us to continue to operate the club at this level.

On the cricket field we were excited to see all five of our senior teams making the finals - a great achievement. We ended up with three Minor Premierships and a Major Premiership. Congratulations to all teams, especially 3

rd Grade for going all the way on the Sunday. A fabulous aspect to

the 3rd Grade Premiership was the participation of Rebecca Silk. Rebecca was on a visit from England and looking to improve her cricket against

the boys. She soon solidified her place in the XI through good spin bowling and was even there at Nelson Bay to celebrate the premiership at the end of the season. Unfortunately Bec has returned to England but she left a letter sincerely telling us what a great time she had and how much she’ll miss the team and the Club. Well done to everyone involved in making her feel so welcome and it is another feather in our cap in terms of female representation following on from Mikaela Turik.

Congratulations to the Under 10/1, Under 14/1 and Under 15 teams for your respective premierships and T20 Mini-Bash titles. Team and individual performances can mostly be put down to the great work by coaches and support from parents. Our coaching and development program led by John Jackson and made possible through the sponsorship from Lateral puts us in a unique and enviable position of giving our young players the best chance to succeed. Among the many young players from CPCC making waves in representative cricket are Nick McLachlan and Jake Carden. Fast bowler Nick had a great year in Manly 1

st Grade whilst Jake captained Manly’s Green Shield, debuted in 5

th Grade for Manly and has been selected

in the NSW Cricket Academy Under 17 squad. Adrian Caproni (U14), Isaiah Vumbaca (U15) and Joel Wood (U16) were also selected for the NSW Cricket Academy program. The sponsorship money also goes to getting as many of our coaches as possible accredited to Level 1 status. John and Marty Haywood also trialed a holiday coaching camp which was most successful. We look forward to more of this activity over the coming season with the next camp scheduled for the September school holidays.

Facilities for playing cricket in Manly Warringah have never been better. Over the past few years the Junior and Senior associations have worked with Councils and upgraded many of the pitches in the district. Last season saw the opening of a cricket ground at Cromer Park. This amazingly is the first new cricket ground opened for many decades and it is terrific. Well done to Warringah Council and Mayor Mike Regan who I know is a big cricket fan. The ground is now the ‘Jewel in the Crown’ for local park cricket – just a pity it’s not available for rep games and finals due to having to share with soccer.

In June 2014 Brenden Ball relocated to the Gold Coast after a twenty year career with CPCC. This time included playing 235 games, captaining the A2s, being CPCC delegate to the MWCA, Vice-President of the MWCA and three tours of England. This year he was awarded the MWCA Sportsman of the Year for his service. Brendo will no doubt take every opportunity to gee up those Banana Benders and don’t be surprised if the Saturday morning Coolangatta to Sydney Jetstar service doesn’t see that 235 games keep increasing. It would probably be a quicker trip than getting through Pittwater Rd on a Saturday morning. All the best to Brendo, Jo and the kids.

Sadly the club lost several close members who passed away during the course of the season including life member Alan Fairhall, foundation member and ‘Original XI’ player Jack Lloyd and Club record holder Ken McDermott. Their contributions to CPCC are detailed further on in the report. Tragically we also said farewell to 4

th Grade player Nick Eade. The sudden loss of Nick shocked the club, particularly the close knit 4

th Grade

team. Cricket meant a lot to Nick, and it was stirring to see how his team mates were able to support and bring some solace to partner Trish as they dealt with the grief of his death.

2014/15 brings up the 60th season for the Collaroy Plateau Cricket Club. It’s hard to believe it will be ten years since we came together to mark the

50th anniversary at the Dee Why RSL. Enter Saturday 14 February, 2015 into the calendar. The Long Reef Golf Club has been booked and the

Committee will be organising an anniversary dinner. Between now and then there is a lot to do but a lot to look forward to.

SECRETARY’S REPORT

All five CPCC teams qualified for the Finals this year with three teams claiming the Minor Premiership. All three of these teams progressed to the Grand Finals, which proved to be hard fought games. Congratulations to Tom Carden on Captaining his 3rd Grade team to a Premiership. The Grand Final was a very close game, but Collaroy never gave up & brought home the JD Durham Shield. Spectacular hitting of straight 6’s by Kav Moorthi proved to be crucial to the outcome of the match. The 4th Grade Grand Final also went down to the wire, but the old cliché of “Catches win Matches” applies here & unfortunately our friends at Manly Breakers took home the prize. Our long-standing hold on the 7th Grade development team Premiership has come to an end, with CPCC unable to chase down the target set by Wakehurst. We had a number of players winning Association Awards, including David Bennetts, Adam McNichol, Damon Steel & Liam Filmer-Ramsay, this is a great effort by Collaroy Plateau especially considering we won the Club Championship for the fourth consecutive time. The following table summarises when the Plateau Senior Teams finished in the regular and post seasons:

Juniors - The Juniors fielded another 15 teams with the Under 10’s & 14’s winning their Grades. The Club continues to produce quality cricketers through devoted support of Managers, Coaches and of course the Junior committee headed up by Vicki Carden. Vicki has indicated she wishes to scale back her long-standing commitment to the role that she has undertaken for more than a decade. The Club is always looking for much needed support of the roles of the Club to keep Cricket strong in the local area. If anyone wishes to assist the Club, please see Vicki or Col or myself. Financial - Another fine servant of the Club has been Treasurer Toby who continues to do a great job in the role. Fees will stay at $250 this season. The Club has made another small profit for the year, which shows the importance of the funds we receive from the Brookvale Hotel. Thanks again to the Management & Staff of the Brooky for their support. In Memoriam - Tragically the club lost a few of its long-standing members during the season. Alan Fairhall, Jack Lloyd, Nick Eade and most recently Ken McDermott. Alan was a Life member of CPCC and played in the very early years of the Club. His wife was also awarded Life membership for her support of the Club. Jack Lloyd was one of the founding members of the club, scoring over 2000 runs. Nick Eade will be greatly missed by the Club, especially his 4th Grade teammates. I attended his funeral in what was an extremely moving ceremony. Just recently Ken McDermott passed away. As I said to Darren, he was a great man. Ken was a great wicket keeper and a great clubman. In the off-season, Ken was the Coach of the Baseball team where a few CPCC Cricketers had a great deal of success & fun under Ken’s guidance The Club extends its thoughts and condolences to family and friends of Alan, Jack, Nick & Ken. Social Scene - Another highly successful season on the social side of things. We ventured again to the spiritual post-season stomping ground, otherwise known as Nelson Bay. This year we hit the local Golf Course, Go-Kart track, One Mile Beach, Brewery, RSL & Shoal Bay Pub all of which I can highly recommend & all of which was again captured on video. The club remains strong but again I call on anyone willing to support CPCC to please assist in any way you can. Good luck in the coming season. See you at the Park or the pub.

TEN SEASONS AGO

The 49th season of the Collaroy Plateau Cricket Club proved to be the biggest senior season ever with a still

record seven senior teams entered into the Saturday afternoon competition as well as nine junior teams into the morning competition. The season kicked off in fine style with players relaxing in the leather lounges and plush woodpanelling of our new sponsor - the Brookvale Hotel thanks to the work of new arrival to the club Mark Lumley, and ended with a magnificent premiership to Dean Storey’s B2s. All manner of activity, action and controversy occurred in between.

Our Junior revival was really humming with over 100 players registered for the season and a premiership to the ‘Freddy’ Quarford coached U9 Thunderbolts featuring Liam and Sam Filmer-Ramsay (Liam is the 2013/14 Bruce Shearer winner). In the U10s, Jasper Harkness-Dunn was a representative in the premiership winning MWJCA Foster Shield team – the first title won by Manly since 1978. Other representatives include current Manly first grade fast bowler Nick McLachlan in the U12 Cawsey Shield.

Aggressive recruiting and calls for independence saw the formation of a still record seven senior teams. I can still hear the groans from several members of the Committee when the decision was made at the 11

th hour on

a Thursday night in the carpark at Plateau Park to enter this number of teams. To the credit of their organisers, all teams made it to the end of the season – some with more success than others. The most successful were the B2s, half of whom remained from the previous years team with the other half going with Luke Ireland to B3. A number of new players recruited to fill this team are now etched in Club folklore such was their talent. Jason Ferris, Michael Letts and Rob Eime bolstered an already strong player base to create a team that were

unbeatable on their day. Michael Letts’ 113 in the semi paved the way for a thrilling Grand Final. With Seaforth 4/154 at tea chasing 217 (Ferris 62), the great Rob Eime bowled a magnificent spell to take 7/70 and the celebrations commenced …. and did not end for sometime.

The A1s made it to the semi but went down to Belrose thanks to a trigger happy umpire just after tea as Henriksen and Huxley were trying to mount a comeback. Season highlights were Chris Arcus trying to swallow a skied ball at Kierle Park resulting in a lot of blood and a trip to Manly Hospital, Mossy taking the MWCA bowling aggregate with 39 wickets, Minnett taking his first wicket for 18 years, Pete scoring 50 – all in fours against Seaforth and a dramatic last ball tie with Seaforth with a script you couldn’t dream up. The A2s again made it to the Grand Final but were soon in a bad spot. After only scoring 100, Forest were coasting at 1 for 60. The Towers however then mounted one of the greatest comebacks in Club history to have the opposition reeling at 8/98. Unfortunately a dropped catch ended their hopes of a miracle win. In the A3s, Brenden Ball took over the reins from John Jackson. The team didn’t figure in the finals but that wasn’t the fault of Geoff Faber who took 41 wickets including two 7 wicket hauls. Luke Ireland’s new B2 team were a colourful lot with their best partnerships being formed around the esky. Their season highlight was a cameo appearance by Celebrate Rifles frontman Damien Lovelock who played one match. Jacko moved from A3s to take over the B1s where Matt Moore made his debut along with a young Blake Conde who also played C2s. Lani Pressley’s afternoon teas were the season highlight.

It was the C2s however that had the most dramatic year. Skipper Lumley assembled all types of players from all parts of Sydney (and beyond) including dads, kids, work clients and passers by. Barely a game went by without some kind of controversy (to be fair mostly attributed to opposition team behaviour resulting from alcohol consumption) but they scraped through to the semi-final. Unfortunately in the small hours of the morning someone adept at clandestine gardening whipper-snippered the pitch giving the Plateau bowlers a wider target than the opposition had the day before. Needless to say that despite winning the game, they lost the result under protest and that was that.

Another record was set on the social scene in terms of major events and ongoing activity. The Brookvale Hotel was very well attended post match and many a meat tray was sold adding additional $2.5k for the Treasurer to report. A bus load ventured to a One-Dayer at the SCG where they soon found that trying to catch forty winks during the boring ‘Bevan’ overs was enough to attract the attention of security. One tour member failed to attract the attention of security and as a result woke up in their cubicle only to exit into a dark and empty SCG. The Christmas Party reached new heights with Club members travelling to the Mosman RSL for a great dinner and trivia night put on by Mark Lumley, Chris Jack and Mark Christensen. A new direction was taken by seperating the Presentation Night from the AGM and holding it at the DYRSL. A big crowd enjoyed the first season Powerpoint presentation that has since become a feature of every night since. In a classic Golf Day handicapping farce, Brenden Ball

was the victor with 47 stableford points shooting 84 off 24 and Dan Peters won the scratch with 72.

The 49th Annual Report gave reference to the upcoming 50

th Anniversary season

for the Club, the most exciting of which was an advertisement calling for expressions of interest for the proposed England Tour in June 2005. It also recorded the winners of the Club’s major awards with the Bruce Shearer going to Michael Letts, The Warwich Armstrong to Nathan Storey and the B&B Trophy to James Humberstone.

All of this was overshadowed however by the loss of young Jack Norris in June 2004. Jack was a member of the U12/1 team and set to move into the U13s for the next season. Junior Secretary Vicki Carden expressed the loss in her report: “Jack was one of our longest serving Junior players, first joining at ‘Kanga’ level in 1998. A vibrant personality, an enthusiastic and competent cricketer with a great sense of humour, Jack will be sorely missed at our club.”

There is no doubt that 2003/04 will always be one of the most talked about seasons in the Club’s long history.

The ‘Randolph Beddows’ Flag

Randolph Beddows is well known in Manly Warringah cricket circles, particularly amongst the First Graders. There is no keener cricketer in the District than Randy. Whether it has been following Martin Shield, the old Forest Hawks, Balgowlah or of late Harbord Bowling teams, Randolph has been a regular on the sidelines for years. Given a chance to field for any team who was short, Randolph would be out like a shot invariably to fine leg. Otherwise, he’s more than happy to have a chat and reminisce. In 2004 Randolph returned a piece of CPCC history he had been custodian of for 25 years. The small flag, one of many which used to be attached to wooden stakes and employed as boundary markers, was left behind after a match in the late 60’s. It is the last known survivor. It was decided to honour the first grade player with the highest ‘Shearer’ Points total for the season with the creation of this trophy.

The ‘B & B’ Trophy (Brian & Barbara Moore)

This perpetual senior Club Award was added during the 2001/02 season

courtesy of ex-clubman Brian Moore. Brian, who re-visited the Plateau for the first time since returning to England after the ’72 season, was thrilled to see the Club continuing on as strong as ever after all these years. Brian and his son Ian who moved to Australia from England in the sixties, played for several seasons with the Plateau with Brian captaining the 1971/72 premiership winning C2 team.

It was agreed by the Executive that the Award be presented to a player who displays an effort, both on and off the field which is above and beyond that which is normally expected. The winner is decided by vote of nominations received from team Captains.

Rothmans sponsored this trophy, first awarded in 1968. Originally introduced for the winner of the Club’s Annual Single Wicket Competition, this award now includes the winner of a Double Wicket Competition, a variation of the single wicket concept. Both events involve club members (individually or in pairs) playing off against each other over competition rounds to decide finalists and eventually a winner/winning pair. Results are determined by runs scored and wickets taken, against drawn opponents. The event was resurrected in 2006 after a 17 year hiatus.

The Nick Eade Shield

Year Winner No. of 6s Grade

2014 Anthony Papandrea 14 1st

4th Grade player Nick Eade tragically passed away during the 2013/14 season. Nick loved his cricket, particularly hitting sixes which was what his batting was all about. This shield was introduced in memory of Nick and is awarded to the senior player who hits the most sixes in a season (MWCA Saturday competition).

Touring Trophies

These two Perpetual Trophies were created during the 50th Anniversary Tour of England. Players are eligible for these awards by playing in any official CPCC touring match (either International or Domestic) or official home ‘host’ matches against visiting touring teams. They are awarded on a conventional season basis (1 July to 30 June).

VALE

Alan Fairhall

PCC Life Member Al Fairhall passed away in October 2013. Alan has been associated with the Club from the very early days as a player, a custodian of The Hut and as regular attendee at Club matches and events including the AGM and Junior Picnic days. Al played 163 games over 13 seasons between 1958/59 and 1970/71. He scored 2841 runs at 16.05 with a high score of 77, and took 111 wickets at 15.19 with best figures of 5 for 14. Alan’s sons Ross and Bruce also played for CPCC and his wife Marie was awarded a Life Membership for her support and hospitality of Club activity during the first few decades.

Jack Lloyd

Foundation member Jack Lloyd died in Melbourne. Jack, who resided in his later years in Wyong, played in CPCC’s first Senior team back in 1956 at Dee Why Oval. Jack’s statistics for his ten year career with CPCC were: Matches - 133, Runs - 2511, Avg - 16.63, 100s - 1, 50s - 11 H.S. - 101, Overs - 3, Wickets - 1, Avg - 16.00 Norm Stephenson (2nd from left back), Barry Harland (3rd from left back), Ken Hunt (3rd from right, back), Frank Huxley (2nd from left, front) and Milton Lidgard (3rd from left, front) are surviving members of this original squad.CPCC 3rd Grade 1956/57 - The Club’s Original Senior XI (Jack Lloyd far right, back row)

Nick Eade

Nick played 44 career matches for CPCC commencing in the 2009/10 season all of them with the 4th grade side. A swashbuckling opening bat, he knew only one way to take on the opening attacks and that was to the boundary, preferably over it. Nick went missing during the season and tragically, after a long and agonising search his body turned up near Shelley Beach.

Ken McDermott: As this report was going to press, the sad news was received of the passing of Ken McDermott. Ken holds the CPCC

record for most catches with 35 in A2s in 1980-81 which is also an Association record. Ken was a true gloveman being also heavily involved in baseball. He coached a number of CPCC players including Dave Quarford as they established the Warringah Warriors team and Rob Minnett in later years.

Another great season at the Plateau. Brief player summaries, beginning with the new guys:

Mitchell Curran - Thanks to Mitch for joining the team in the second half of the season and he was a valuable addition to the team. A great effort with both bat & ball and he was a great contributing factor to us making the finals.

Matthew Terry - Matt joined the team in the second half of the Season. A significant contribution against a feisty Cromer side in Round 13 secured a crucial win. As a batsman myself, I know an excellent technique when I see one & Matt’s got it.

David Morris - David was a welcome addition to the 1st Grade team at the start of the season. David’s bowling was menacing to some of the competitions most seasoned batsmen. His season was interrupted twice; first time for a schoolboys rugby tour and the second time for a rugby contract in NZ. David is welcome anytime at the Plateau & the Wallabies.

Kieran Wagstaff - Kieran returned to Sydney & joined the team in Round 6. He scored a spectacular century up at the Plateau and he had cemented his spot in our middle order. The good news for him was bad news for us when he landed a sports journo job in Toowoomba & left the club again after Round 11.

Nick Bonner - Nick’s bowling challenged plenty of MWCA’s best batsmen. 16 Wickets doesn’t do justice to Nick’s pace. He also chimed in with the bat scoring 124 runs, hitting a couple of handy 6’s is also a great contribution to any batting line up.

Aaron Peters - I remember Aaron bowling a corker of a delivery, taking to top of off stump of the Cromer captain who could only shake his head and walk off. Aaron is shaping up as a fantastic cricketer, with a promising cricket career ahead & I hope we can keep him at the Plateau.

Steve Albanese - I’d like to thank Steve for his effort & contribution to the team during the season. Steve smacked a memorable 56* up at the Plateau but was, at times, incredibly unlucky with the bat.

Brenden Ball - Brendo put in another solid effort this year. Over 200 runs, 19 wickets & I remember a crucial sky-high catch he took up at the Plateau in Round 12 removing Mona Vale best batter. Brendo has moved to Queensland, but his love for CPCC & MWSE will never falter & I’m sure we will see plenty of Brendo in the near future. Many thanks for your service to CPCC.

David Bennetts - Dave’s performance with the ball earned him the MWCA Bowling Aggregate Trophy with 32 wickets. His average of 11.3 also greatly helped us get to the finals. Dave never gives his wicket away, his best was a gritty 59* in Round 4.

Luke Hammond - Another great season for Luke. In my opinion, the best opening batsman in the competition. 224 runs & 13 wickets in 8 matches is a damn good performance. I’m not going to mention anything about his catches. Congrats on the baby & please stay at Plateau.

David Moss - Mossy had another great season with bat & ball. Smashing nearly 400 runs and can always be relied on to take a wicket with 19. He hit Harbord for 81 in Round 6 and deserved a century when he fell 4 runs short up at the Plateau.

Anthony Papandrea - If you ever want to see a fast bowler get hammered for a 6, then come & watch Paps play. Fourteen 6’s for the season & a glorious Century at Plateau Park were just some of the highlights. Over 300 runs, well done Paps.

Jeff Porter-Dening - JPD put in another excellent effort for the team this season. He followed up his 35 wickets last year with another 26 this year. Economy of 3.13 & best bowling of 5/65 makes Jeff a very handy bowler. Amazing effort bowling 175 overs.

Dom Wheeler - Thanks to Dom for being Vice-Captain this season. We had a few tough decisions to make & his insights were extremely valuable. Dom had a great season behind the stumps and a great season at the top of the order.

Robert Minnett - We welcomed a few new players to the team this year, but we also lost a few players through other commitments. If we could have put our best team together for the finals, we would have surely put up a strong challenge to any team. Sadly I lost the first 4 tosses meaning we fielded first in the first 4 games, losing them all & we were languishing at the bottom of the table. The team did remarkably well to recover & make the Semi-finals. A brilliant effort in the Semi & we were unlucky not to win the match when we had Cromer at 6/81.

Grade

The 2013/14 season began with much optimism, as we were not changing grades for the first time in 3 years, this fact alone gave us the confidence that we could go all the way. This season we also changed our team structure in using only 10 full time players and a handful of readily available part timers. So after the first round of matches we were a bit of a mixed bag with 2 wins from 5 games, it’s fair to day that this was not the start we were looking for.

The next 3 performances before Christmas were of a much higher quality, with a last ball loss to Harbord Bowling, a huge win over Manly Breakers at Plateau Park, followed by a good chase against Harbord Diggers at Nolans. The One day period of the season continued post-Christmas and we won all but one of these matches, that being another close loss again to Harbord Bowling. Needing to finish with 1 win in our final 3 two day matches to qualify for finals, we firstly beat Harbord Diggers outright and then dominated Dee Why in what ended in a rained out draw, and that was enough to secure us second spot for finals.

Our finals opponent was actually our last round opponent, and after being soundly beaten by them in the last round we felt that we were set to avenge that defeat in the semi. The semi-final was a typically low scoring affair, with no batsmen passing 25 runs from our side, but with 114 on the board we knew that the scoreboard pressure would work in our favour. Long Reef started well only losing 1 wicket for 39 runs by the end of day one, but that meant they still required a further 76 runs on day two. So day two began with much hope and optimism and an early wicket certainly boosted that feeling. We then faced a slow long period of batting, and the next 2 wickets would take us 2 hours and they would accumulate a further 58 runs. So Long Reef went to tea needing only 11 runs with 6 wickets in hand.

After tea we struck immediately and for the first time since the start of the day, we felt like there was a chance to pressure their tail and possibly sneak home with the win. Bowling from Evan Mortimer and Adam McNicholl was precise as the fall of wickets read 105, 110, 113, 113, 113 before their number 9 batsmen edged one past gully and away for 2 runs, only to then be given out LBW 2 balls later. After a thorough examination of the scorebooks (accountants were used, aye Ev) we realised we had lost by 1 run, knowing a tie would have put us through. Thus ended a season of so much hope and promise.

The highlights of the season were once again Adam McNicholl’s machine like bowling, taking 5 five wicket hauls and again leading the comp in wickets with 47. Evan Mortimer and Chris Wiles also took 5 wicket bags with Evan finishing the season with a career high 29 wickets. From a batting point of view Damien Luzzio notched his first half century for us and topped the batting averages (28.93) and aggregates with over 400 runs. Jack Fox also notched a class century against Harbord Diggers with new comer Chris Sturgess and veteran wicket keeper Brian Siao also scored half centuries.

The season was overall an improvement on the previous one, but after such an agonising semi-final loss, we will return hungrier than ever to take out the title in 2014/15!

3rd

Grade

The CPCC 3rd Grade side entered into a new era in season 2013/14. 6 players remained from the previous season’s side; Ryan Dunn, Matt Richards, Andrew Cameron, Kavin Moorthi, John Heiniger and myself. Sam Steindl made his long awaited return, Toby Horstead jumped up after a few years of lower grade domination, David Le joined from 4th grade, Nirav Patel came down from 2nds, Brodie Elliott was a surviving member of last year’s disbanded 3rd Grade Blue team and Hugh Brassil returned to cricket after playing juniors with the Plateau a couple of years back. We also picked up a new recruit in Rebecca Silk, a talented English off spinner over for the summer to experience cricket in Australia. Pete Henriksen also had a cameo towards the end of the season.

To preface the recount of all the actual cricketing actual, I must say that you couldn’t hope for a better bunch of people to play cricket with. The team atmosphere, friendships outside the game and never ending banter was always going to make for one of the most enjoyable seasons of cricket we’ve had.

The team roared into action from the very first game. Toby immediately demonstrated his prolific run scoring ability by smacking 90 against Terrey Hills, catapulting us to a total of 335. The Brick took 4 wickets which put him of track for what would end up being his most prolific wicket taking season of his career. Ironically Dunny bowled 15 overs of spin in this game before transforming himself into a frontline pace bowler two games later with a 6 fa. The comp was tight up the top and a division between the top and bottom 3 quickly formed. After the Christmas break we excelled – only losing 1 game and wrapping up the minor premiership narrowly ahead of Diggers. We suffered a big blow in round 13 when Sammy broke his arm – and amazingly kept for 35 overs with it. It was a tough loss but Brodes was able to step in as keeper and do an awesome job. Despite missing the last 4 games Sam was still able to take out the Warwick Armstrong trophy for most catches in the club.

We faced off against Wakehurst in the semi-final on a slow Nolans 4 outfield. Batting first we somewhat cruised to 187. Then the incredibly disciplined and tight bowling that defined our season was too much for Wakehurst to handle as we steamrolled them for only 34 off 34 overs. Nirav took a career best 8/11 off 10 and the Brick had 2/1 off 8.

Diggers were our opponent in the Grand Final. We’d beaten them once and they’d beaten us twice in regular season so it was always shaping up to be a close affair. We were sent in and found ourselves in dire straits at 3/5 and then 7/52. Then it was DLE and Kav to the rescue. David hit an awesome 37 while Kav blasted 4 sixes to lift the team to 119. He was unbeaten on 51*. The Diggers chase provided a thrilling conclusion to the season. Momentum swayed back and forth – we’d tighten things up and take a wicket or two, then they’d have a partnership and get back on track. Eventually the pressure was too much for the Diggers and Nirav took a catch off Kav’s bowling to get the Premiership winning wicket. The bowling effort was led by Dunny who put in an amazingly committed Grand Final performance to take 5/17 off 20. It was certainly a memorable victory – Plateau’s highest grade Premiership since A1s 8 years ago and first ever 3rd Grade Premiership.

After cruising around the Nolans car park a bit in the back of Dunny’s ute, celebrations got into full swing back at the Brooky Hotel and continued on into the night, including a bit of a taboo visit to our home at Plateau Park where “Under the Water Tower” was belted out in the middle of the ground before tennis court cricket got under way. In fact we were appropriately still celebrating a week later when almost the whole team made it up to Nelson Bay for the end of season trip (including Becca!). We managed to source our JD Durham Shield for that and had a champagne spraying ceremony to celebrate its arrival, capping off our awesome season in style.

4th

Grade Cricket wise another successful season for the mighty 4th grade CPCC tanks, making our 3rd successive finals series and 2nd grand final appearances over the past 3 seasons. A hard fought grand final ensued versus the top two teams all season CPCC and Manly Breakers. We scored enough runs batting first but didn’t field particularly well and as they say “catches win matches”. We dropped too many as a team on day 2 and that cost us.

Some season highlights include…

Damon Steel & Daniel Priest joining us full time moving up from juniors and 7th grade, both had very successful seasons. In Daniel we found a great opening partner to compliment Jimmy H’s ‘Boycottesque’ style. Dan took on opening attacks without fear and got our scoring rate going from the outset of an innings. Damon had a standout season, 450 runs scored @ 41.36 and 31 wickets at 13.55 on many occasions he turned a game for us. Best bowling figures of 7/15 in the final round game against Long Reef before sealed an outright win and cemented our minor premiership position. But my personal highlight was Blake Conde’s maiden ton for the club. He scored a chanceless 111 in the semi-final only to be run out by a return shot to the bowler from yours truly which ended up collecting the stumps at the non-strikers end with Blake backing up for a quick single. A century in red ink would have been sweet I’m sure, but a century regardless is a special thing. Congratulations Blake.

However our season was one of mixed emotions as we lost one of our brothers Nick Eade at the mid season point. We all took it hard coming to terms with his loss (and still dealing with it), and I want to pay special tribute to Nick in this season report.

Nick played 44 career matches for CPCC commencing in the 2009/10 season all of them with the 4th grade side. A swashbuckling opening bat, he knew only one way to take on the opening attacks and that was to the boundary, preferably over it. When Nick came off we generally won the game, he could destroy a bowling attack in no time. He could also play a fast and straight Yorker across the line and get cleaned up first ball, but that was Nick, playing straight wasn’t in the repertoire unless it was back over the bowlers head, he was an entertainer and we loved him for it. He also took over the keeping duties after Blake needed a break for a season or two to run around the outfield. He loved a chat (always friendly) with the opposition batsman at the crease, and was determined to outdo Blake’s season catches aggregate behind the poles. I loved bowling my slow lefties to him, if it was a bad ball there was always encouragement from behind the stumps that we’d get him on the next one, or “toss it up above the eyes” to get them out of the crease for another stumping…he took a few of those. We carried heavy hearts through the rest of the season but also took inspiration in dedicating it to Nick’s memory. We miss you mate – Rest In Peace.

That’s the essence of why our side has stayed a tight group of guys with few changes in line up for many seasons, for us it’s about playing with and for your mates and having fun, the results don’t really matter that much on reflection. I want to thank Jimmy once again for his support as vice-captain, and to my other 9 vice captains out on the field each week it was once again my honour to skipper you. See you in 2014/15

Another great season for the development team, aside from the loss in the grand finals. This would have been a 5th year running premiership win, but all good things must come to an end. The team played a total of 14 matches with 9 wins, 3 outright wins and 2 losses (both to Wakehurst Redbacks A) The side was made up of: Experienced players: Andrew Davis, John Jackson, Darren McDermott, Cameron Milling, Cameron Baber, Liam Filmer-Ramsay, Nick Brunton, Keshava Ratnavibushena and Luke Ireland. Regular Junior Players: Sam Filmer-Ramsay, Bradley Baber, James Bourcier, Lachlan Allomes, Aaron Good, Thomas Cains, Ryan Blackshaw, Oscar Brunton, Charlie Jormanainen, Daniel Priest, Umar Ali, Some Highlights Included: The standard 1 catch of the season from Kesh R “Comes with the package” Important and long innings from young batters: Liam Filmer-Ramsay, Sam Filmer Ramsay and James Bourcier. 3 outright wins keeping us well clear of 2nd place to secure the minor premiership. Career first tones by Cameron Baber and Liam Filmer Ramsay. Cameron Milling’s outstanding 5/19 against Harbord Bowling Club in the Semi’s, putting us in a confident position to take the Semi Final. It was great to see another contingent of youngsters playing very competitive senior cricket for CPCC. Their performances would indicate a promising future for our club.

Masters

The Masters experienced a decidedly shortened season thanks to four washouts and two forfeits. We were more than competitive against all but two teams – the Sri Lankan Lions and Mosman. Both these teams towelled us up and made it quite clear where we need to be to challenge for this competition. Despite that, I think we’ve got it within our Club to snatch a title as the vaguaries of points systems, Masters politics, draws and the weather can throw up allsorts of scenarios. One thing’s for sure, we put on the best arvo tea in the comp.

When we played it was most enjoyable. The civilised yet competitive nature of Masters cricket is very attractive and I thoroughly recommend it to those 40+, particularly anyone thinking their cricket days are over due to lack of time etc. We’ll take you even for just the one game!

Thanks to Camo and Mossy – the Masterminds behind the team, and also to the boys at Manly Grade for organising the turf grounds for us.

Captained once again by Nirav Patel, the Towers were unable to make it three in a row when they were knocked out in the semi-final stage.

T20 OGRES

The Ogres have survived another season and once again had a great time doing so.

The Manly Warringah T20 competition is becoming increasingly competitive and it is safe to say that we were outclassed in every game. We especially missed Dom Wheeler who had been making a bunch of no hopers look slightly better than absolutely hopeless. Congratulations Dom on being awarded the Manly Warringah Cricket Association Representative Player of the Year.

A special thank you to the other teams in the T20 competition who got into the spirit of it all and had an enjoyable game with The Ogres. I have never heard a more disappointed team than the one who had their game against The Ogres washed out and had to share the points with us!

Junior Secretary’s Report

What ‘Off Season’?

When I bump into friends from our extended cricket family through the months of April to August, the most usual greeting I receive is “Are you enjoying the off season?” Anyone involved with the administration of a community sporting Club will know that there is really no such thing as an off-season. No sooner have all the finals, presentation days, AGM’s, gear return and other loose ends of one season been wrapped up then it’s time to get into preparation mode for the new season to come …..

Throw a CPCC Ashes Tour to England into the ‘off season’ mix and it was really no wonder that it seemed like there was no break at all between the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons. Of course I’m not complaining. I consider myself very fortunate indeed to have had the opportunity to be part of the 2013 CPCC touring group to Singapore/England/Amsterdam (and then some) – and what a great tour it was! I did however board the outgoing flight late June with laptop and Ipad carefully calculated into my baggage allowance knowing that due to the wonder (or curse?) of modern technology I would be able to complete my “off season” duties remotely from the other side of the globe.

Come August 18th 2013 I stepped almost literally off a long-haul flight from Paris straight into rego day for season 2013-14. Junior Registration numbers were once again healthy at CPCC this past season enabling us to field 16 Saturday morning teams as well as hosting our well attended Friday evening In2Cricket program. Particularly encouraging was the increase in new player enrolments through the Kangas to U11’s age groups. Also particularly pleasing was our ability to attract enough players to field 2 teams in the U16-18’s competition. Player retention rates – due to many external competing factors - make it increasingly difficult for Clubs to form teams in this upper age group. I believe our transition program from CPCC Juniors to our 7th Grade development team in the men’s afternoon competition, mentored by our resident Club Coach John Jackson, is a key factor here, and something we should be suitably proud of. We continue to be one of the largest clubs in the MWJCA and are one of few that offer cricket opportunities in all formats of the game, right through from U6 beginners to the highest Grade in the men’s Saturday afternoon competition.

The Saturday morning competition commenced early September for U10's and up with the Kangas and U9's getting underway later in October. Toby Horstead once again organized and lead a fantastic program for our In2Cricket players. The twilight format at Plateau Park on Friday evenings continued to be a big hit with the many families congregating around our “shed” and lining up for the customary Friday night sausage sizzle. Special mention to the Blacker, Ward, Horstead and Huxley families for their help running the BBQ and ‘shop’ on Friday evenings.

Rep trials for 2013-14 were held back in March 2013 with train-on squads selected for each age group. Official training commenced late July with final team selections announced after trial matches during September/October. The rep season proper commenced at the end of October. As always we are very proud of all CPCC Juniors who are selected as MWJCA representative players. For the 2013-2014 season MWJCA representative caps were presented to:

Under 11 DCA J.H. Creak Shield: James Brock & Nick Taylor

Under 11 President's Cup: Sam Jones & Lachlan Trewartha

Under 12 President’s Cup: Noah Vumbaca & Kai Davies

Under 13 DCA W.S. Gee Shield: Adrian Caproni, Fletcher Kirby & James Mulder

Under 13 President's Cup: Harrison Kantor-Smith

Under 14 DCA Harold Moore Shield: Isaiah Vumbaca & Hayden Brown

Under 14 President's Cup: Joshua Smith

Under 15 DCA E.G. Weblin Shield: Joel Wood, Jack Pickering, Harrison Brock, Sam Kelly, Ellis Raymond & Max Jolley

Under 15 President’s Cup: Aaron Stevens

Under 16 DCA C.S. Watson Shield: Jake Carden, Matthew Brock, Harrison Dunn, Keiren Nixon, Abhijeet Virdi & Aaron Peters (afternoon comp.)

Under 16 President’s Cup – Bryton Caldwell, Lachlan Allomes, Jayden Steanes, Michael Woodhouse & Glyn Archer

This season was the most successful representative season for MWJCA for many years. With strong performances across all teams auguring well for the future, the major celebrations went to the U11 Creak Shield and the U14 Harold Moore teams who both took out the Championship – undefeated- in their respective DCA competitions. Both of these results went down to the wire with both teams fighting back from the brink of defeat at their home grounds of Griffith Park (U14’s) and Collaroy Plateau Park (U11’s) to bring home the silverware in nail biting Grand Final victories. The tea-break appeared to be the turning point in both matches. For those of us who shuffled up and down Alexander Street between the 2 grounds cheering both teams over the line, the final wicket falling at Plateau Park - sealing Manly’s 2nd Championship of the day - was truly a scene of jubilation. I don’t think Plateau Park has ever experienced such excitement and nevermore had it encapsulated the ‘village green’ atmosphere that we are so keen to promote. Special Congratulations to CPCC’s James Brock and Nick Taylor (U11’s), Isaiah Vumbaca and Hayden Brown (U14’s) who were members of these successful teams.

Both teams then continued their successful seasons by taking out the Shield in their respective age groups at the January 2014 Newcastle Country Carnival. The U14’s then also went on to win the NSW U14’s State Challenge – played on the SCG – with Isaiah Vumbaca named as player of the match. We must also offer congratulations to coach Roy Vumbaca who steered the U14’s on their winning course and deservedly received the DCA Coach of the Year Award for his stellar efforts. Go Plateau and Go Manly!

This brings me to the U16’s SCA 2014 Green Shield competition with CPCC players featuring prominently in the line-up selected to represent MWDCC. Hopefully this was the first of many opportunities these young cricketers will have to play for their local Grade Club. Congratulations to Glyn Archer, Jake Carden, Jack Pickering, Abhijeet Virdi, Isaiah Vumbaca and Joel Wood who all proudly wore the Manly Waratah Jersey in this prestigious competition. The team was ably coached by Greg Boyer and David Gainsford – ex CPCC parents/coaches. The points table unfortunately didn’t really do justice to the performance of the team showing just 2 victories from 7 matches. What the final table didn’t show however was the tough draw we had, and how agonizingly close we were to victory in 2 other matches – one against Sutherland who went on to play in their second Grand Final in a row. You also need to look more closely at the game stats to note some stellar individual performances with bat and ball. Following on from this tournament Jake Carden was selected in the A.W. Green Shield Second XII representing the SCA against NSW Country U16 in April 2014. As a result of his performance in this match and on the back of his rep, Green Shield and Manly 5th Grade performances for the season Jake was rewarded with a place in the U17’s Cricket NSW Academy Program. Three other CPCC players have been selected in the Academy program on the back of their outstanding seasons. Adrian Caproni (U14’s), Isaiah Vumbaca (U15’s), Joel Wood (U16’s). This really is something to be extremely proud of. Only 8 players in total from Manly were selected in these squads and 4 of them are from our CPCC Juniors.

In a busy season we also ran our first, very successful CPCC in-house School Holiday Cricket Camp. This was coordinated by Martin Haywood and John Jackson and ran during the Christmas break at Collaroy Plateau Park. Due to the popularity and success more of these camps will be offered in coming seasons. The camp was also a useful vehicle for some of our newly accredited Level 1 coaches to apply their knowledge and skills. John Jackson is to be commended for organizing and encouraging our 16+ year olds into this Club sponsored coaching program.

Several teams contributed to the annual Pink Stumps Day activities this year. Proceeds from BBQ’s, lolly-bags, cupcakes and the sale of other varied pink merchandise combined to reach a total of $813.00. We are all aware of the valuable work undertaken by the McGrath Foundation and proudly continue to support this wonderful cause.

The Saturday morning competition concluded on March 22nd followed by our annual Junior picnic/presentation day at Clontarf Reserve that afternoon. We wrapped up the season under sunny skies which was indicative of the weather for most of the season. The MWJCA presentation night was held in June 2014. Our distinctive blue and gold “Towers” premiership shirts were again highly visible with the U10/1 ‘Charges’ and U14/1 ‘Electrodes’ players proudly taking the stage to collect their Premiership trophies. Manly 1st Grader Adam Crosthwaite was the special guest on hand to present the awards to the players in the competition winning teams as well as to individual award winners as recognized below. Congratulations to all award recipients.

I am looking forward to yet another long, hot Summer of cricket from the sidelines, and the celebrations ahead for our 60th Anniversary season.

U16-18 Force

The force team are; Lochlan, Stefan, Eli, Toby, Bryton, Umar, Lachlan, Ellis, Aaron, Jayden, Michael, Kieren, Hiranya and Abhijeet. One armed coach Darryl, Manager Craig, Assistant in everything Ian. Various scorers thank you, and great parents who transport and support their sons, and enjoy coffee and a laugh early on a Saturday morning. We had an up and down season. We were competitive in most games only having one disaster at Nolans 1, but it’s hard to win a game when you win the toss and get bowled out for 32. The young men in this team have cricket ability to burn, and they enjoy their games and the company of their team mates, and it is fun and entertaining from the side lines. The jump in age group up to 16/18 was hard to get used to at the start of the season, but as we said, play hard enjoy your cricket and the results will take care of themselves. All players improved again this season, which is great to see. The team that won the comp only beat us by 1 wicket in a game that we came close to winning. Highlights there were plenty. Bryton’s 106 not out, Kieren’s 72 not out, 50s to Ellis and Jayden, this 50 in a partnership of 92 with Aaron. All the batsmen had success at different times, but unfortunately not all at the same time. The batting was always attacking, but we need to work on longer stays out in the middle to build bigger totals. Bowling: Umar 5/25 being the best return was always a handful. Ellis 3/0, Aaron 3/11, Hiranya 3/20 also bowled well. All bowlers did well, but let’s work on building pressure on the batsmen and cutting down on the sundries. Catching was one of our strong points and was usually entertaining. It’s my pleasure to watch these boys grow into young men and to help them with this great game of cricket. Cheers to all, hope to see you all again next season.

U16-18 Power

With nearly all of last years’ "Power" team moving on to Shires/Grade cricket, a new team was formed with members mostly new to CPCC.

Ryan Blackshaw, Benjamin Blackshaw, Jack Punton, Lewis Beard, Sam Groom, Patrick Koch, and Mitchell Streater all moved to the club this year. We were joined briefly at the beginning of the season by Jake Carden, before quickly being snapped up by Manly Grade Club. However, we were fortunate to have Matthew Brock, Harrison Dunn, and Glyn Archer join us whenever they could during the season, along with some cameo appearances from Joel Wood.

Daniel Priest, while also playing 4th Grade Senior Cricket, became almost a permanent team member, and a very valuable one at that.

Aaron Mahboob was another new addition to the Plateau ranks this year who contributed well, particularly with the ball, while long time CPCC player Rob Fabbro rounded out the team despite some injury issues hampering his consistency. We had some good wins throughout the season, with the boys working well as a team. In addition to the regular Saturday morning competition we took part in the new mid-week Manly Mini-Bash competition. These T20 games were great fun and we had a couple of nail biting finishes and plenty of laughs. Thanks to all the boys and their parents for their support this year and to all at CPCC for welcoming so many of us to the club. Thanks also to Terry Punton for taking the lion’s share of the umpiring duties, and to John Jackson for the Friday afternoon training sessions.

U15 Energy

The 2013/14 season could be described as a challenging one for the team. We had the pressure of being the defending premiers from season 2012/13, plus we had the bare 11 players and no full time coach. We lost a few players from the previous season, but we did gain some new players who proved to be valuable assets to the team and fitted in very well. Most weeks we struggled to get 11 players on the field. Fielding a full team was made more difficult when some of the boys were called up to play in the Warringah/Manly pathways program which sometimes left only 9 players on the team sheet. A big thanks must be given to boys from the U16’s (who were age eligible) who filled in at the start of the season.

Overall we finished in 3rd place in what was a very strong competition. The boys are to be congratulated on their efforts and achievements. The team also took out the MWJCA U15’s “Mini-Bash” T20 competition which was an outstanding achievement. Special mention must go to Ellis Raymond for an amazing innings of 101.

During the season there were some outstanding individual performances by some of the boys. Some of the performances are detailed below.

BATTING Isaiah Vumbaca 407 runs (Avg 40.70) Highest score – 77* Jack McKenna 349 runs (Avg 29.08) Highest Score – 120* Max Jolley 333 runs (Avg 66.60) Highest Score – 57* Harry Brock 261 runs (Avg 32.63) Highest Score – 50* BOWLING Isaiah Vumbaca 17 wickets (Avg 10.88) Best Bowling – 3/5 Blaney Powe 11 wickets (Avg 15) Best Bowling – 3/7 Harry Brock 10 wickets (Avg 25.50) Best Bowling – 2/2

A big thanks must also go out to the scorers and umpires throughout the season.

U14/1 Electrodes

As Co-Coaches for the past few years, Steve and I have had the honour of winning not just 1 premiership (2012/2013), but back to back championships, including the inaugural T20 Big Bash for 2013/2014 season. How you may ask? ……… Communication, Honesty and Respect.

We would like to thank all parents for allowing us as coaches to deliver the results and to provide a great family environment for the young men to enjoy. But first, you must have a team of young men who want to learn and play cricket. Great attitudes, a wonderful spirit and a genuine passion to play for each other laid the foundation for success in 2013/2014.

With an injection of new blood (Joshua and Lachlan), the team each week showed how the game of cricket should be played. The Electrodes had no standouts as each player is a proven performer in their own right. (Hayden Brown, Adi Caproni, Ethan Elliott, Lachlan Cale , Lachlan Burt, Brody Mathers, Harry Kantor Smith, Joshua Smith, Nathan Bain, Fletcher Kirby, James Mulder, Dan Parker).

The team also showed great versatility throughout the year. When we switched the batting order, our no 11, 10, 9, 8, and 7 provided great pleasure to everyone with some exciting batting and scorebook pressure. It was nice to see the opposing coaches lost for words. Good on you fellas.

We would like to thank our manager Brett Mace who took a HUGE pay cut from leading the Olympic Equestrian Team to look after proceedings. Always willing to help in all capacities and most importantly, providing the boys / coaches with “sugar treats” when called upon. Thank you.

The continued support from Steve Kirby and Martin Mulder with both the scoring / coffees is very much appreciated. Thank you guys.

Remember, people play sports all their lives and don’t win a single premiership. Cherish and look back at a wonderful couple of years (3 championships). You all deserve it and hopefully you walk away with some life long memories. Well done Young men.

U14/2 Neutrons

It’s hard to believe that I’ve been coaching the ‘Neutrons’ for 5 seasons now, but yet another summer has come and gone, plenty of runs scored & wickets taken, and more than a few laughs had by all. Thankfully the rain stayed away for most of this season, which allowed the kids to spend much more time together in the middle honing their skills, and they put together some fantastic team performances along the way, highlighted by a thrilling one wicket win in the last game before Christmas (having lost two wickets off the first two balls of our innings!). We lost a few players from our squad from last year, but were joined by some very keen rookies, and a couple of talented players from Cromer who came in and added a lot of strength to both our bowling and batting stocks. All of the boys seemed to be a lot more focused and determined at training this year, particularly our newcomers, who showed an amazing improvement in all facets of their game by the end of the season. Three hard-fought victories saw us finish a respectable 5th on the ladder, however one of the most pleasing things from my perspective was the way in which they all played their cricket this year. Whether they were taking a bagful of wickets, or getting flayed to all parts of the ground, they always had a smile on their faces and seemed to be enjoying themselves out there which at the end of the day is what the game is all about. The batting award this year went to one of our new team members – Lennox Whittaker – who became the rock of most of our innings this year, showing the boys how it should be done by scoring an impressive 282 runs and becoming the first ‘Neutron’ to score a half-century – notching up 61 against the team that ended up winning the comp! There were quite a few contenders for the bowling award this year, with the wickets shared around by all of the bowlers, however in the end it went to another one of our new recruits – Seb Attwater – who became the go-to bowler when we needed to dry up runs or snag a wicket. Seb bowled a great line and length all year, just getting the ball to tail in late which saw the stumps go flying on numerous occasions! Justin Soo was a deserving winner of the all-rounder award this year – taking 14 wickets at an average of just 13, and batting with a lot of composure in a number of tricky situations this year, finishing unbeaten on 5 occasions. Justin and Lennox were also selected for the rep team next year, which was a very proud day for me as a coach! I must take the time to thank all of the parents who helped me out both at training and at the matches this season, in particular to Adam Ward for doing a great job as manager, and Cameron Baber for coming on as co-coach for the second half of the season. Thanks also to all of the boys for working so hard and giving it their all for the whole season. Go Plateau!

U12/1 Lightning The core group of “Lightning” team stalwarts - Max Faulkner, Fin Hurd, Matt Rose, Alex Butcher, Sam Jones, Oskar Gardiner, Riley Dean, and Alex Charratt backed up again this season joined by Nick Lee and Kobe Magyar. They had to work hard in the early stages of the season to bolster their ranks with some new recruiting. Private school and other factors had depleted the ranks from the previous season. A timely bye for the 11/1’s enabled players from the “Gigawatts” to fill in to get a team on the park for Rd 1. Handy new team additions Mark Dignam and Charlie Martin eventually rounded out the team numbers for the rest of the season.

In a strong competition the Lightning team had a few good wins but found it hard going against the top of the table teams. The boys continue to hone their skills under the coaching of Graeme Faulkner with Caroline Faulkner efficiently organising things in the manager’s role.

The boys and their families continue to enjoy their Saturday mornings at cricket.

U12/1 Megawatts

The 2013/14 Megawatts Team consisted of Kiwa Berry, Alex Corcoran, Kai Davies, Hudson Hurt, Dylan Moran, Tom Pattinson, Nick Taylor, Nick Schulenburg, Ben Shultz, Noah Vumbaca and Cooper Westbury. We also welcomed two new faces into the team Max Kocass (joining us from the “Thunderbolts” team) and Zac Phillips (his first year of playing cricket).

It was a season fraught with injury and illness. Through it all there was a core of 12 boys who were committed and dedicated to their cricket. Some of the longer serving Megawatts were tasked with the on field leadership responsibilities, wicket keeping duties and field placement.

All the boys enjoy playing cricket together and there is a fantastic team feeling amongst them whether it is on the sidelines or on the field: supporting, encouraging or consoling when something does not go the way they hoped.

It was another season of strong performances with fielding and bowling and a season of some up and down sessions with the bat.

A great group of talented cricketers to coach and manage. The outstanding sportsmanship that you show to one another, the respect and honesty with which you bring to the game each week is a credit to you all.

Congratulations on a fantastic 2013-14 cricket season.

U12/2 Thunderbolts

The Thunderbolts had a great first half of the season including coming from impossible positions to win off the last ball or with the final pair at the crease. We struggled after the Christmas break and might have to train harder during the season in the future to ensure we remain competitive as the boys know they can compete and beat the best teams.

This was our first year of playing traditional cricket and the boys adjusted well. All the boys scored runs and took wickets again which was great to see. The Thunderbolts award winners were:

Best Batsman: Riley Ward (170 runs at 21.25 and a top score of 37 not out)

Best Bowler: Isaac Downie (18 wickets at 10.61 with best figures of 3/7)

Most Improved: Tim Smith (10 wickets and 56 runs for the season)

5 Wickets: Harry Barham (5/6 – and 14 wickets in just half a season)

Thank you to all the parents who helped out during the year and especially to co-coaches Matt Allam and Gary Smith. Having a few parents assisting at training and on game days was a great help and much appreciated by the boys. Thanks also to John Jackson our Club Coach. Finally, a big thank you to all the Thunderbolts who put up with me again harassing them to pitch the ball up or play each ball on its merits.

Look forward to seeing the Thunderbolts push for their first Premiership in 2014/15!

U11/1 Gigawatts This was the first season of traditional rules cricket for this team. Stepping up to the new format after “Average” cricket is always a time of adjustment and it was managed admirably by this group who were well and truly ready for the challenge and proved to be very competitive as a team and as individuals.

Finishing a commendable 4th in a very strong competition the Gigawatts were in touch with the top of the table for most of the season – a string of unlucky drawn results in rain affected matches unfortunately hindering the team’s momentum towards the latter stages.

James Brock was a member of the MWJCA U11 J.H. Creak Shield representative team who took out the DCA Shield undefeated and also won the Newcastle Country Carnival.

Lachlan Trewartha also made rep selection in the U11’s President’s Cup team.

The team was coached by Nirav Patel from our men’s afternoon 3rd Grade team with Anthony Johnson on hand as assistant coach and manager.

U11/2 Kilowatts

A new team was formed in the Under 11’s this year due to a healthy increase in enrolments in this age range. Many of these boys were already mates from footy and by all reports that camaraderie continued onto the cricket field for the summer. The level of energy, enjoyment, and enthusiasm in this group was evident to any passer-by who observed them busy training up at Plateau Park. Most of these players were new to club cricket this season with the team therefore entering in the 11/2’s competition to play the more inclusive “Average” rules cricket. This allowed the players to refine their skills in readiness for the step up to traditional rules cricket in U12’s next season whilst learning the correct techniques for dealing with the leather 2 piece ball. For a group with several beginners in the ranks at the start of the season, the improvement in this team was clearly apparent with only one loss recorded in the second half of the season. Ultimately the team placed 4th and were only a win or two away from the top teams which was a fantastic result after a slow start and augers well for future seasons. The team was coached by Rob Lee with the assistance of several of the other team parents. Under 11/2 Kilowatts Season Awards

U10/1 Charges

The boys lived and breathed cricket this season, and their dedication to the game is evident in the fantastic result of being joint premiers! The only game we lost all season was the very first match against our arch enemies Harbord, who we managed to settle the score with later in the season by beating them on the second round and joining them at the top of the table. The boys thrived under the coaching skills of John Jackson, and each Friday afternoon spent more than their allotted time in the nets, each one desperate for "just one more bowl". John happily gave his time to mentor the boys, and the skills he taught the boys helped them to improve over the season, in all areas of batting, bowling and fielding. Gareth Chambers, our game day coach, lead the boys each Saturday and emphasised their sportsmanship and love of the game. His talents as an excellent umpire, was appreciated by all involved. The boy’s understanding of the average game of cricket really expanded over the season and you could see them each week trying hard to increase their runs without losing wickets. Their team spirit was also a joy to watch as they cheered each other on and worked together in the field. The parents all had a really enjoyable season too, and the season was capped off with a rewarding friendly game of fathers against sons match at Plateau Park.

Under 10/2 Radiators

The Radiators were a new team formed this season. We had seen several of these players at CPCC in previous years in our In2Cricket or Kanga programs. After a season or so of them pursuing other interests it was great to see them make a return to cricket. It was also great to welcome many new players to the club in this age group.

John Jackson started the team training off for this group before they were placed in the expert hands of coach Craig Marsh who was ably assisted by Lisa Henley in the manager’s role for the duration of the season.

Under 9 Electric Our squad was a relatively young one compared with our opposition – or so it seemed going by the height and strength of most our opposition throughout the year. Each week, at least one strong partnership of two bigger boys would plunder our steady bowling, good enough to give them something to hit whilst we received little to hit in return. We tasted victory once or twice early on and had a tie with the CPCC Storm however for the most part our opposition got the better of us. We kept the focus on developing strong fundamentals such as fielding, running between wickets and good batting and bowling technique. We also mixed our partnerships around so our players all had a chance to bat with each other – regardless of their skill level. Just when as a Coach I started to ask “why aren’t we making progress?” the boys switched on. When it came together it did so in spectacular fashion one Saturday in February at Forest Primary School. Batting first, the Electric were on track for an average score of 130 until two wickets in the second last over reduced the average to a still impressive 65. On that day, the boys hit the ball hard, ran aggressively but safely between wickets and kept their stumps intact earning bonus runs in all but one pair. In the field, the bowling was on target with the stumps knocked over regularly, catches taken and the opposition denied runs with great ground fielding. It was fabulous to watch and was evidence that the boys are paying more attention at training than you think.

Luke Burgess – (Bowling Award) Luke works hard at his game and has all the shots, playing them with great technique. With the ball, Luke is almost unplayable at this level as he swings it quickly past the batsmen. His second over is usually leg spin that gets the same result. Cyan Davis – (Batting Award) Whilst several other boys played some spectacular innings, Cyan’s batting was always consistent throughout the year, particularly against the stronger bowlers. Cyan was also very capable with the ball and he has good hands and awareness in the field. Ben Ward – (Most Improved) Benny improved out of sight this season. Once he had untangled his action, Ben’s confidence grew and he went from struggling through an over to being an accurate wicket taker with the ball. The hard work in the backyard also paid off with the bat as he defended stoutly and started to contribute to the runs tally. Alec Huxley – Alec’s all round ability steadily improved throughout the year. His batting is well measured whilst his bowling worried opposition batsmen with his flight and accuracy. His season highlights were in the field where he achieved several run outs with direct hits and shared a catch with Jasper in the last game. Blake Long – Despite being unable to train, Blake consistently showed up Saturday morning and played great cricket. Blake was impressive behind the stumps with the gloves, whacked a few with the bat and was generally accurate with the ball. His opening partnership of 33 with Isaac kicked started the amazing team batting performance at Forest Primary School. Sam Millard – Sammy was without doubt our best ground fielder as his ability to stop and pick up the ball cleanly is excellent. He took a great catch at Boondah early in the season. Sam is strong for his size and he has no problem getting them down the other end when bowling. He never seems intimidated with the bat as the ball is often bouncing up around his ears. Isaac Edwards – Isaac is developing into a threatening batsman. He has a great swing and gives it a good whack, often to the leg side boundary. Isaac proved on several occasions he can put together a good over when he puts his mind to it taking several wickets. Jasper Pressley – A close candidate for both the batting and bowling awards, Jasper featured in partnerships of 36 (with Pat) & 47 (31 off the bat with Luke). His season highlight however was his second over at Forest Primary School where Jasper took 3 wickets in 4 balls – all bowled. Pat Trevaskis – The highlight of Pat’s year was undoubtedly his big 6’s and many 4’s, just the way dad hits them. His bowling is fast & once he can control the swinging ball he’ll be knocking out the stumps more regularly. Aliusman Ali – Another on the fast improve, Aliusman’s batting was rock solid and he’s now contributing to partnerships. His highlights were hitting a four against Forest and taking a wicket (bowled). Aiden Crawford – If there was a ‘Most Wickets’ award in this age, Aden would have gone close to winning. He had the handy knack of picking up two wickets in an over which he did on three occasions. His highlight batting was a 21 run partnership with Cyan against Wakehurst Huntsmen. Jack Crabb – Jack was one of several players who took tentative steps early on, but by the end of the season were coming on strong. Jack’s bowling showed the biggest improvement as he really focused hard on getting himself set and lining up the stumps. His highlight with the bat was a partnership of 15 with Isaac in the first game off only two overs. James Wheen - James’ highlight with the bat came early in the season with a partnership of 21 with Ben. Another one gradually learning the game and gaining confidence throughout the season, James was difficult to dismiss whilst at the crease and is developing a good solid bowling action. Having a co-coach like Mick Trevaskis was a great help in getting through the season. Thanks to the other parents who assisted and supported throughout the year in particular Lloyd Burgess at training and Bill Edwards for scoring regularly. Also thanks to Marty Hayward’s U9 Storm team for sharing some trainings and for Jocelyn in taking on the Team Manager role. Congratulations to the boys as well. I believe that in terms of general behaviour, attitude and discipline in the field they lead the competition. It’s a great little team and I hope we can keep them together for the next few seasons.

Under 9 Storm

Twelve terrific, young, enthusiastic cricketers began training in September as it was time to start “big cricket” – the next step up from Kanga. We had a young team that were keen to test their talents in the U9 competition. We had varying ages from 6yr olds through to 8yrs. It was great to see so many boys return as well as welcome some new boys such as Oli Patterson, Fin Arnold both from the Avalon area which is a big compliment to the CCPC.

The early part of the season was reminding the boys of the basic skills of catching, throwing, hitting balls and bowling techniques. Catching water balloons seemed to be a big thrill !! It wasn’t long before the Storm hit their straps and on game-day they proved more than useful with some terrific wins and were more than competitive in every game. There were only a handful of 9ys olds that proved too big and strong for this group which is very encouraging for the next season.

It was great to watch the boys develop through the season thanks to all of the time and effort put in by all Mums and Dads and the Coaching team. We were very fortunate to have a very supportive group of parents which makes a huge difference to the vibe around the team on Saturdays. It was evident the boys went out and enjoyed themselves with the full support of their families.

Unfortunately we had to nominate some trophy winners but it must be said ALL of the Storm players contributed to this very successful season.

Lachlan Kinstler-Smith CPCC Team Batting Award

Owen Gordon CPCC Team Most Improved Award

As well as the above Club trophies a “Coach’s Award” was presented to Ethan Buchanan

Finally - Big thanks to Justene for all her efforts as Manager and ensuring we had a full compliment of players each week, and to all the Mums and Dads that helped me out at training and on Saturday every week. Fingers crossed all the boys return in 2014/15 to carry on some of the great work of this past season.

Kanga

After coaching and watching our two Kanga teams – the Sparks and the Electrons - I am confident that the future is looking bright for Collaroy Plateau Cricket Club. Both teams were enthusiastic at training and quick to try and pick up new skills. We have some real ‘guns’ coming through the Kangas and I am certain there are some stars on the way up.

The Sparks were the slightly older team and right from the first training session and game they displayed great skills, were very competitive and continued to improve and play well throughout the season. The boys who step up to Average Cricket (Under 8’s on a real pitch and wearing pads!) in 2014/15 will perform very well. The stars of the Sparks were: Asher Armstrong, Jayden Small, Ryan Barnes, Jacob Quarrie, Zak Rogers, Marnix Fredrikze, Luc Debien, Tommy Fullbrook, Lukas Malik (filled in for both teams) The Sparks would like to thank Kathy Barnes (Manager) and Tim Rogers (Game Day Coach and Umpire) and the other parents who helped throughout the season.

The younger Electrons team improved dramatically and by the end of the season were competing with the best of them and winning their fair share of games. The Electrons were enthusiastic and a pleasure to coach and many of the boys and girls in the team could easily make the step up to Average Cricket if they wish in 2014/15. The stars of the Electrons were: Andrew McAnulty, Connor Gorman, Daniel Blacker, Emily Horstead, Jake Morris, Joshua Sherriff, Connor Blair, Cooper Horley, Daniel Kelly, Hannah McAnulty, Jett Nicholson, Taj Nicholson

Thank you to everyone who helped out with the Electron’s last season including John Jackson (Club Coach), Toby Horstead (Co-Coach) and Paula Horstead (Manager).

Manly Mini Bash Collaroy Plateau Energy - U15 League 1 Winners

Manly put on a glorious sunny day for the 1st day of finals for the Manly Mini Bash played at the beautiful Manly Oval.

Collaroy Plateau Energy won the Manly Mini Bash U15 League 1 final after putting on an impressive batting display scoring over 140 runs which St Augustines Green were unable to chase down. Collaroy Plateau bowled them out still needing another 70+ runs to win. Max Jolley was man of the match after scoring the highest score.

Collaroy Plateau Electrodes - U14 League 1 Winners

The last of the Manly Mini Bash finals was the U14 League 1 between Harbord Scorchers and Collaroy Plateau Electrodes.

Harbord batted first and set a total of 115. Unfortunately for them it just wasn't enough on the day, and Collaroy Plateau reached it in 17 overs with wickets in hand.

Man of the match was awarded to Hayden Brown who retired on 40 runs after what felt like only a few minutes at the crease, plus some economical bowling figures and a wicket.

MILO in2CRICKET

MILO in2CRICKET is Australia’s national junior development program for boys and girls not yet involved in under age cricket competition. The program incorporates high participation with skill development. The program runs over 8-12 weeks, with sessions running for 60mins. Whilst the aim of the program is for children to develop their skills, there is always an emphasis on fun and enjoying cricket. All the equipment used is designed for young children and is safe and easy to use. Each child receives a Give-Away pack that includes a bat, ball, bag, hat, t-shirt, cd-rom and a few other promotional items. The recommended cost of the program is $50. MILO in2CRICKET is the first step in a child's long term involvement in the game of cricket. CPCC’s MILO in2CRICKET centre is linked to our junior cricket club and will lead into underage competitions. Contact Vicki Carden for more information on CPCC participation

Co-ordinators Report

As was the case last year I must thank the team of Coordinators that allowed every Friday at ‘The Plateau' to become more than a hit and giggle and allow our youngest boys and girls to start developing their cricketing skills. This season was a little different with skills and basics being focused on before the Christmas break and game based sessions after the break. The opportunity to play matches on Vic Huxley Oval with the scoreboard ticking over proved very popular with the In2Cricket stars. Some close games were played out and with the drama building the focus of the Friday night crowd added to the cricket experience. With such an enthusiastic group of parents and eager children we were able to run skills sessions to “get your elbow up” when batting, “straight arm past your ear” when bowling and always “keeping our eyes on the ball”. As was the case last season a highlight for the children was the ‘Empty the Bucket' games. For ‘Empty the Bucket' the Coordinator tries to empty a bucket of balls as the children gather and refill the bucket. Friday nights at the Plateau, with many teams active and the BBQ going, continue to provide a Village Cricket experience. All the best to those moving to Kangas and I look forward to In2Cricket during next season's World Cup summer.
