Keeping Richardson Healthy: Environmental & Public Health Initiatives Director of the Richardson Health Department, Bill Alsup, will provide attendees with important information about the daily functions of the Health Department which make Richardson a great place to live! Program components include brief examinations of efforts to combat West Nile Virus, local eating establishment inspections, water quality efforts, child care facility regulations, pool safety, Richard- son’s immunization clinic, and health and environmentally focused educational efforts. Creating & Sustaining a Great Community: An Overview of Richardson’s Many Leadership & Involvement Opportunities There exist numerous programs within multiple entities throughout the City of Richardson which provide neighborhood leaders and active members of their organizations the chance to become more involved in, and positively impact, the community at large. These opportuni- ties foster the development of great leadership and provide participants with the opportunity to play an active role in the betterment of our community. Community Services Manager Lindsay Turman will provide an overview of different City, community-based, and civic ways to be involved that neighborhood leaders will find inherently beneficial. Program elements include brief overviews of programs like Leadership Richardson, City Boards and Commissions, the City’s Volunteer Assistance Program, strong community organizations like The Network of Community Ministries and YMCA, and the many civic groups that comprise Richardson. Ramping Up Recycling in Richardson Attendees will reconvene in the Grand Hall for a short presentation about the future of recycling efforts in Richardson. A special guest will be presenting door prizes at this time! The Neighborhood Leadership Workshop includes a new element this Fall! The Second Annual Pete Burks Day of Service will be held on October 19, 2013. This event, developed and implemented by Richardson’s Footwasher Ministries, honors 2LT Peter Burks for his service to our country. Alan Burks, Peter’s father, established the Unsung Hero Fund which collects everyday items most often desired by those serving overseas. Donations bins will be available should you wish to contribute. The following are the most sought after donations: shelf stable snacks, powdered drink packets, white socks, small bottles of hand sanitizer, baby wipes, CDs, DVDs and console games.
