Technical Challenges

•Design / Analysis tools - storage vs communication, centralized vs distributed control, grid-friendly device design

•Intelligent power electronics to enable “plug and play” connectivity and for upgradability over long system lifetimes -- 30-50 years.

•Energy Storage Systems – “Actuators” for controls systems •Near real-time optimal control for large numbers of grid connected devices

•Incorporating human-machine interface design into both the grid and the devices connecting to it

•Intrinsic, designed-in cyber security to ensure high degree of communication does not compromise security

•Interdisciplinary engineering education for future design and development

Highly coupled systems requiring interdiscplinary thinking to make them safe, practical and robust - skills == electrical, mechanical and human factors
