Reformation Commentary on Scripture

“The Reformers discerned rightly what the church

desperately needed in the sixteenth century—the bold

proclamation of the Word based on careful study of

the sacred Scriptures. We need not only to hear that

same call again for our own day, but also to learn from

the Reformation how to do it. This commentary is a

godsend!”

Richard J. Mouw, president, Fuller

Theological Seminary

In this new addition to the Reformation Commentary on

Scripture, we read along as the Reformers return to the

ancient stories of the six days of creation, the tragic Fall of

God’s creatures and the catastrophe of the flood and apply

them to the tumultuous age of the Reformation .

Readers will encounter comments from a wide array of

perspectives, from the magisterial Reformers to radical Prot-

estants like Balthasar Hubmaier, Menno Simons, Pilgram

Marpeck and Dirk Philips, as well as some Catholic thinkers,

such as Desiderius Erasmus and Cardinal Cajetan . Impor-

tant contributions from female voices, like katharina Schütz

zell and Anna Maria van Schurman, are included also .

John L. Thompson is professor of historical theology and

Galen and Susan Byker Professor of Reformed Theology at

Fuller Theological Seminary, Pasadena, California . He is the

author of John Calvin & the Daughters of Sarah and Writing the

Wrongs, and the coeditor of Biblical Interpretation in the Era of

the Reformation.

A Little Book for New Theologians

Why and How to Study Theology

In the tradition of Helmut Thielicke’s A Little Exercise for

Young Theologians, kelly kapic offers a concise introduction

to the study of theology for newcomers to the field . He high-

lights the value and importance of theological study and

explains its unique nature as a serious discipline .

Not only concerned with content and method, kapic

explores the skills, attitudes and spiritual practices needed

by those who take up the discipline . His brief, clear and

lively approach draws out the relevance of theology for

Christian life, worship, mission, witness and more .

“Theology is about life,” writes kapic . “It is not a conver-

sation our souls can afford to avoid .”

Kelly M. Kapic is professor of theological studies at Cove-

nant College in Lookout Mountain, Georgia . He earned a

Ph .D . in systematic and historical theology at king’s College,

university of London, and an M .Div . at Reformed Theolog-

ical Seminary in Orlando, Florida.

Delighting in the Trinity

An Introduction to the Christian Faith

“Reeves unpacks the significance of the Trinity for

Christian life with a straight-shooting, conversational

style honed by years of student ministry. But don’t

let the panache fool you. There is substance here that

outweighs that of books much harder to understand.”

Donald Fairbairn, Gordon-Conwell Theological

Seminary

In this brief and winsome book, Michael Reeves teaches us

to view the whole of Christian faith as a reflection of the

Triune God . He takes cues from preachers and teachers

down through the ages, setting key doctrines of creation,

the person and work of Christ, and life in the Spirit into a

simple framework of the Christian life .

A rich and enjoyable read on the basic beliefs of Christi-

anity that avoids dumbing down its profound and life-

changing truths .

universities and Colleges Christian Fellowship (uCCF) in

The God Who Makes Himself Known

The Missionary Heart of the Book of Exodus

New Studies in Biblical Theology

Countering scholarly tendencies to fragment the text over

theological difficulties, Ross Blackburn contends that

Exodus should be read as a unified whole, and that an

appreciation of its missionary theme in its canonical context

is of great help in dealing with the difficulties that the book

poses .

Blackburn’s examination shows that Exodus not only

sheds important light on the church’s mission but also

reveals what kind of God the Lord is: one who pursues his

glory and our good, ultimately realizing both as he makes

himself known in Christ .

W. Ross Blackburn (Ph .D ., university of St . Andrews)

serves as the rector of Christ the king, an Anglican Fellow-

ship in Boone, North Carolina, and teaches biblical studies

at Appalachian State university .

Craig L . Blomberg

Interpreting the Parables (Second Edition)

In this new and expanded second edition, Craig Blomberg

evaluates contemporary critical approaches to the para-

bles—including those that have emerged in the twenty years

since the first edition was published .

Taking on the prevailing views of C . H . Dodd and

Joachim Jeremias, Blomberg argues that within proper

definitions and limits, parables are best seen as allegories—

many with more than one intended meaning . This widely

used text has taken a minority perspective and made it

mainstream, with Blomberg ably defending his approach

and offering brief interpretations of all the major parables .

Craig L. Blomberg (Ph .D ., Aberdeen) is distinguished

professor of New Testament at Denver Seminary . His books

include The Historical Reliability of the Gospels, Neither Poverty

nor Riches, Jesus and the Gospels: An Introduction and Survey,

The Historical Reliability of John’s Gospel, commentaries on

Matthew and 1 Corinthians, Making Sense of the New Testa-

ment: 3 Crucial Questions and Preaching the Parables.

Health, Healing and the Church’s Mission

Biblical Perspectives and Moral Priorities

Does the Christian community have the resources to develop

a coherent response to today’s health care challenges?

Accounting for biblical, theological and church-historical

streams, Willard Swartley divulges a long tradition of

Beginning with in-depth studies of Old and New Testament

understandings of healing, the book surveys three millennia

of biblical and theological teaching and practice in

congregational life and mission .

The book concludes with an attempt to synthesize these

biblical, historical and moral perspectives to help all Chris-

tians, including those in health care professions, respond to

our current health care challenges .

Incarnational Humanism

A Philosophy of Culture for the Church in the World

Strategic Initiatives in Evangelical Theology

Culling evidence from Christian thinkers ranging from

Irenaeus and Augustine to de Lubac and Bonhoeffer, Jens

zimmermann invokes an ancient tradition of Christian

humanism to breathe life into the cultural malaise of the

postmodern West .

zimmermann’s proposal is built on a distinctly evangel-

ical philosophy of culture that grasps the link between the

new humanity inaugurated by Christ and all of humanity . In

this connection, he finds a new image of the public ministry

of the church as witness to the world’s reconciliation with

God .

Jens Zimmermann is Canada Research Chair of

Interpretation, Religion and Culture in the departement

of English, as well as professor of English and modern

languages, at Trinity Western university in Langley, British

Columbia . He is the author of Recovering Theological Herme-

In the midst of the cultural and intellectual upheavals of postmodernity in Western

society, evangelicalism finds itself in the middle of a conversation about its own

identity and future.

Whereas postmodernism is typically discussed in a traditional book form—an edited

volume with essays—the format of this book seeks to place the discussion in a form

that is consistent with its content. Using the motif of the blog, A New Kind of

Conversation is an experimental book that enters into this conversation with five

evangelical leaders and academics acting as the primary bloggers: Brian McLaren,

Bruce Ellis Benson, Ellen Haroutunian, Mabiala Kenzon, and Myron Bradley Penner.

Originally posted on anewkindofconversation.com, people all over the world were

invited to blog on topics relevant to the issue of postmodernism and evangelicalism

such as:

• What is “Postmodernism”?

• Evangelical Faith and (Postmodern) Others

• Postmodernism and Spiritual Formation

• What is a Postmodern Evangelical?

This book, a distillation of that exchange, invites you to engage in this challenging and

complex discussion. Welcome to the conversation!

MYRON BRADLEY PENNER is professor of Philosophy and Theology at Prairie College and lives in

Three Hills, AB, Canada, with his wife and three daughters. Myron has a BS and MA from Liberty

University, Virginia, and a PhD from New College, Edinburgh University. He is the co-chair of the Study

Group for Evangelical Theology and Postmodernism at the Evangelical Theological Society and is the

editor of (and contributor to) Christianity and the Postmodern Turn: Six Views.

HUNTER BARNES has a diverse background including professional work as an actor and writer. He has

a deep interest in narrative theory and orality and scripture, and has been working on a project in the

performance of scripture through the Gospel of Mark for the past three years. Hunter received his MA in

Communication/Theatre Arts from Regent University in Virginia. Hunter lives in Zarephath, New Jersey

with his wife and three daughters, and is the creative arts director for Zarephath Christian Church.

Stewardship

ISBN-13: 978-1-932805-86-4 ISBN-10: 1-932805-86-9

I praise God for this more sensible, biblical, and down-to-earth challenge concerning money and mission. . . . I pray many people will take the time to read it and find a more grace-awakened approach to this important issue.

—GEORGE VERWER, Founder, Operation Mobilization

John Rowell has written a globally challenging manifesto for Christian stewardship in the 21st Century.

—DR. PETER KUZMIC, Professor of World Missions and European Studies, Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary, Massachusetts

To Give or Not to Give? deserves to become required reading for church leaders, mission policy makers, missiologists, and missionaries-in-training.

—DR. JONATHAN J. BONK, Executive Director, Overseas Ministries Study Center, Editor, International Bulletin of Missionary Research

Every once in a while a book comes along that challenges Christian leaders to review their commonly held beliefs with a new biblical evaluation. This discomfort-ing appeal deserves to be taken seriously.

—PAUL BORTHWICK, Development Associates International.

DR. JOHN ROWELL began his career as a Certified Public Accountant before his

transition to vocational ministry as a church planting pastor in 1984. John is an ordained

minister in the Evangelical Free Church of America and serves on the Board of Directors

for Food for the Hungry (US) and Antioch Network. He directs a small mission agency,

Ministry Resource Network, Inc., which works primarily with a network of US churches

committed to building a church planting movement in Bosnia Herzegovina.

Imagine enjoying a feast with bowls full of food at your end of the table while your brothers and sisters

sit hungry at the other end with empty or nearly empty bowls before them. This scenario is an apt

metaphor to describe a world where 2.7 billion people survive on less than $2 a day while others are

well fed and prosperous.

In the face of just such a global reality, Westerners have been taught that giving to help those in need

will prove harmful in the end. Presumably, those who receive outside funds cannot be expected to

become self-supporting. The “dangers of dependency” are thus trumpeted in a manner that

discourages a response of simple generosity. Is opting “not to give” really the right answer?

John Rowell doesn’t think so! In To Give or Not To Give? he challenges us to reconsider what it

means to “do the right thing” with Western wealth as we pursue 21st century missions. Pointing the

way to a more covenantal commitment to the poor, he shows us how to be more discerning about our

giving and more biblically generous at the same time.
