BUILDING PERMITS

As a reminder, building permits are required for anystructure being built on your property larger than 200square feet. Applications for the permit can be obtainedin the Forest Lake Office.

Once the permit has been received, a review of theproperty is conducted and approval is granted as longas the structure meets the standards set by the restric-tive covenants of Forest Lake. Forest Lake does notcharge a fee for a permit issued to a property owner, however all applications once approved are forwardedto Moffatt Township. The property owner is required toobtain an additional permit from Moffatt Township priorto construction commencing. Moffatt Township doescharge a fee, which is contingent on the type of struc-ture being proposed.

These rules are in place to discourage non-compliantstructures from being built in Forest Lake that may beconsidered an eye-sore to other property owners.

Director Tom Wall

PRESIDENT’S CORNER

What a spectacular fall! Mother Nature really outdidherself this year. The leaf color was outstanding botharound the Lake and throughout our community. Unfor-tunately the October Color Cruise on the Lake wascancelled due to lack of volunteers. Volunteers makethings happen. Please consider taking a turn.

Now winter is on its way. Note the Snow Plow Clubupdate and form in this issue. Also, think about winter-izing! A few of our residents sometimes forget to drainwater from areas not heated for the winter months. Itcan get expensive if systems freeze and break causingdamage to homes and garages.

Just a reminder that the Board of Directors has beenoperating with only eight members since July due to oneresignation. It’s hard enough to keep up when we havenine members, so please keep in mind that we arelooking for a few good people to run for the Board nextJuly. Nominations will be opening in the spring, so if youknow someone you think would be an asset to ForestLake, please nominate them.

CAMPGROUNDThe trimming and removal of trees last fall greatlyimproved the Campground for the season. Mainte-nance tried very hard to keep up with the leveling of lowspots left from stump removal and will continue to do soas the ground packs down. They do top the chart inkeeping our Campground in great shape throughout theyear. Thank you!As your most recent Director, I appreciated the calm-ness and cooperation in the Campground this summerseason. Most of our necessary changes have beenimprovements in cutting utility costs and keeping ourCampground a family friendly environment. Some re-minders concerning fall and winter are:> The water was disconnected on October 15th with an

available porta-potti for fall use.> There is a $10.00 per day fee for any occupied stored

unit or for other members who wish a campsite untilDecember 31st. Please sign in and pay at the Officewhen you arrive.

> No electricity or water is provided after December31st. Occupation in a stored unit, however, is permis-sible without charge when providing your own sourceof power.

Thank you for being a Forest Lake camper!

LAKE TREATMENT

Forest Lake POA typically treats the Lake once a yearat the beginning of the summer season. This keeps thewater clear for the majority of the summer months untilright around mid to late August when the algae bloombecomes noticeable. Due to cost constraints, an addi-tional Lake treatment for this problem has been dis-couraged since only a few more weeks remain of theboating season. I would recommend that propertyowners contact the Board of Directors in the future ifthey feel strongly about spending additional money totreat the Lake late in the season for this problem. As youall know, once the frost comes and the Lake is lowered, this problem goes away until the following year. Yourcomments are always appreciated and we welcomeyour feedback.

Director Tom Wall

OFFICE AND PERSONNELAs we all know, the Office slows down to a snail’s paceafter Labor Day. With that in mind, we have reducedboth Mark and Linda’s hours. Mark works 4 days andLinda works 3 days. The days they work are based ontheir personal schedules.

Welcome to Daniel Mancani who has been hired towork in the Maintenance department as needed. Fare-well to Lester Eichman who has resigned from theSecurity force.

Director Trudy Redmond

PANCAKE BREAKF AST

A very successful pancake breakfast was held on LaborDay. Gary Schoenherr and his crew served 103 break-fasts. The money earned will help to renovate theClubhouse, which is in need of flooring and a coolingsystem. Thanks, Gary, for a job well done!

WATER PATROL

I would like to thank all of the Water Patrol volunteerswho have once again been responsible for making thesummer’s boating season safe and fun for all on ForestLake. Without our volunteers, Water Patrol would not beable to monitor the boat ramp, which discouragesnon—property owners from using the Lake. There werefew problems last summer. With such great weatherthere were many opportunities to enjoy boating andLake activities.

I especially want to thank the following volunteers whodonate their time year after year to make Water Patrolpossible. They are: Ralph Cook, Terry Farlow, BobHanson, Chuck Manning, Alyce Oertel and Dean Scott.I also want to thank new Water Patrol members whodonated time last summer. They are: Sam Ala, GerryDraves, Ken LeSage and Paula Nowak. We hope to seeall of you back next summer.

FALL MAINTENANCE UPDATE

The Maintenance department has been busy since thelast issue of the FLIP. In addition to our normal winterpreparations, we have made some changes around theClubhouse, Office and Park area. We removed severaldiseased and dying pine trees that were infected with afungus known as Rhizosphaera needle cast. A fewothers were removed because they had become too bigand were causing root and branch damage in the area.Due to the generosity of the Forest Lake Garden Club

we were able to replace all the removed trees and adda few more. Vee Weiferman, the chairperson for theGarden Club, put in the time and effort to search localnurseries and garden centers to find 11 beautiful mapletrees. They have been planted around the Clubhouseand in the Park. I would like to take this opportunity tothank Vee Wieferman and the Garden Club for theirgenerous donation.

Drainage tiles have been installed about 2 feet belowgrade and were covered with pea gravel along the eastand south walls of the Clubhouse. A waterproof mem-brane was also applied to the foundation 2 feet belowgrade and 18 inches up the outside wall. This was doneto eliminate the water seepage in the southeast cornerof the Clubhouse. A sidewalk was then added to theLakeside of the Clubhouse. Besides making the arealook neat and clean, it will help direct water away fromthe building.

The erosion control project on the north side of the Lakehas been started. There is about 400 feet of Forest Lakeshoreline that requires some attention. Carl Knapp andhis group of volunteers have already placed about 100feet of stone in that area. The Maintenance departmentgives them a hand when more bodies are needed. Keepup the good work, Carl. Thank you for putting this groupof volunteers together.

We have done a couple of projects in the Storage andRefuse area. There were a couple of minor repairs doneto the roof of the storage building and then it was paintedwith two applications of metal seal coating. A bulletinboard was built and placed by the dumpsters. On theboard you will find a list of items with the correspondingcost to dump them.

The parking lot by the Office and Clubhouse has re-ceived a new finish. The lot was cleaned, the crackswere filled and then a seal coating was applied to protect

the asphalt. New parking space lines were also painted.Spicer Group Inc., the engineering company that wehired, has completed its inspection of our dam. TheForest Lake Dam was inspected pursuant to the re-quirements of Part 315 and Part 307, of the Dam Safety,Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act451 of 1994. Spicer Group conducted the 3-year in-spection of the dam on April 21, June 24 and August 6,2011, as requested. The reason for 3 inspection dateswas to view the dam at low water conditions (winterlevel), high water conditions (after a significant runoffevent), and late summer conditions. A preliminary draftreport was submitted for our review. The report indi-

cated that the overall condition of the Dam and itsappurtenant structures are in satisfactory conditions. There are a few minor deficiencies that will be moni-tored by the Directors of Dam Safety and Maintenance, and the Maintenance department will make repairs asneeded.

As always the Maintenance and Housekeeping depart-ments will continue to keep Forest Lake neat, clean andin good working condition.

Director Gary Schoenherr

RENTAL DOCKSThe summer season always passes so quickly, but wecan hardly complain about the many beautiful Michigansummer days and hot weather that we had this year.Already it’s time to get boats cleaned and stored for thewinter. Lake lowering began on October 17th. Thank youto everyone for following water safety and courtesy thissummer. Our members are the ones who help keepForest Lake the great place that it is.

This spring our Dock Wait List moved at record speedand we were able to accommodate most families whorequested a dock at the beginning of the season.Presently we have 30 members on the wait list. We willonce again assess the change rate in spring 2012 toaddress the possible need of additional rental dockareas in the future.

The renewal of “A” docks will begin after the Lake islowered and the area is dry enough for maintenance towork. All “A” dock renters have been called or notified bymail to remove all personal items (cleats, bumpers, etc.) when removing their boat for the season. Thereare also reminder signs on the gates. All other docks willcontinue to be evaluated and repaired as needed.
