of western Montana by way of this newgovernment highway.

The beauty of the drive is not merely adisplay of scenic grandeur. For in that oneday drive the tourist will view, in panorama,

the entire picture of Montana's industries.Starting at Butte, the city built on "therichest hill in the world" the traveler goesto Anaconda, where thousands of workmenare smelting the ore, which has been takenout of the Butte hill, into the precious redmetal. The cities of Anaconda and Butteare the copper centers of the world, and theindustrial centers of Montana. But almostbefore the traveler has lost sight of theAnaconda smoke stack, which, parenthetically, is the highest in the world, he entersa paradise of virgin forests, shimmeringmountain lakes, towering crags and tumbling, foaming mountain streams.

Along the route, too, are the manganesemines of Philipsburg and the sapphiremines which produce a large percentage ofMontana's precious stones. Near the route, too, are two of Montana's most famous summer resorts-Sleeping Child Springs andLolo Hot Springs.

Then, as the traveler crosses the Sapphire range, he comes upon the SkalkahoFalls, one of the beauty spots of the westwhich has been made accessible to the public by the building of this scenic highway. There is no more 'beautiful s.ight in any of

our national parks than the view the traveler catches of this wild mountain streamas it dashes down the rocks of the Sapphires toward the broad Bitter Root riverbelow.

From the falls the highway drops downinto the Bitter Root valley and Hamilton. Here again there is a change of scenerywhich is little short of magical. Instead ofvirgin timber and untamed mountain sides, which were seen a few miles before, thereare the broad and verdant ranches of Montana's most fertile valley. Here there aresplendid farm homes, spreading orchards, fields which produce grains equal to any inthe world, ranches which produce dairyproducts which are marketed all over thewest. And most important of all, here isthe home of the Bitter Root McIntosh apple, famous all over the world.

Drive leisurely through this incomparable valley. Notice the jagged peaks of theBitter Root mountains on the west-theroughest "saw-tooth" range in Americaand the towering Sapphires on the east. For this agricultural valley, 'as level andverdant as the plains of Iowa, is boundedon both sides and one end by tremendous

mountain ranges for which Montana isfamous.

westward route toward Spokane and thePacific coast-one enters the vast pine forests which comprise so great a part of the.wealth of the west-millions upon millionsof feet of standing timber.

And so in the short space of a one-daydrive the traveler sees the picture of Montana's industry and its resources: the invaluable copper mines of Butte with theirhundreds of miles of tunnels under the city;the huge smelters of Anaconda; lakes andhot springs with which nature has so abundantly endowed Montana; breath-takingmountain scenery and cold, clear mountainstreams dashing themselves against themountain sides; broad valleys with fertile, prosperous ranches and farms; the StateUniversity city; the tremendous lumbermills of Bonner and Milltown; and thegreat, virgin pine forests of the west.

Do you wonder that those who have traveled it 'before you call it "the most beautiful one-day drive in Almerica"-and themost remarkable?

You can make the drive in one day. Butyou will enjoy spending several days in thisplayground of the west, with its incompar- .

Hot SpringsTwo short side-trips which should be in

cluded in the Skalkaho itinerary are visitsto Sleeping Child and Lolo Hot Springs.Sleeping Child springs is only twelve milesfrom the junction of the Skalkaho and themain Bitter Root valley road. A shady roadleads along a boisterous creek high up inthe hills, where the springs buildings arenestled in a pretty canyon. A camp gro,!ndhas been provided, and cottages, meals, plunge and tub baths are available. Goodfishing is also 'one of the lures of this trip, which is well worth the time involved.

To reach Lolo Hot Springs one must turnwest at Lolo. A beautiful drive along Lolocreek takes one over the route made famousby Lewis and Clark, and by Chief Josephand his band of Nez Perce Indians in hismasterly retreat before the United Statessoldiers in 1876. This route is being improved and new sections built which willeventually lead to Kooskia, Idaho, and willbe known as the Lewis and Clark Highway. The springs' are 28 miles west of the townof Lolo, and here may be found spacious

A Sportsman's ParadisePerhaps nowhere in the entire west has·

the angler a greater paradise. Starting atAnaconda, Warm Spr.ings creek flowsthrough the tourist park, and many a disciple of Izaak Walton has filled his creelfrom these waters.

Twenty miles west of Anaconda isGeorgetown lake, an artificial body of watercreated as a reservoir for water used at thereduction works of the copper company atAnaconda. It is a lovely lake with 25 milesof shoreline, nestling in the mountainheights like a sparkling gem. From thefish .in this lake come millions of eggs whichare shipped to the various hatcheries of thestate, there to be hatched and later releasedin the streams for the pleasure of the fisherman. The spawning station is operated bythe Montana Fish and Game Commission, and is under the direct supervision of Dr.J. H. 'l'roece.

start for Flint creek for the spawning beds. They get as far as the traps at the spawningstation whe e the spawn is removed andthen they are permitted to travel up thecreek and, later, when the vacuum causedby releasing of the spawn is filled to itsnormal size, these great fish travel backinto the lake where they are available forthe entertainment of such sportsmen as areable to catch them. The spawning seasonlasts about three months.

Another interesting phase of this work isthe planting of mature fish in other bodiesof water. About 400 large trout, ranging in.weight from four to ten pounds, have thisyear been transported from Georgetownlake and liberated in Rock creek, the eastand west forks of which are crossed on the

. way to the Skalkaho. It is planned totransfer one hundred more of these fish thisyear, making a total of 500 placed in Rockcreek.

No other stream in western Montana isso well known and frequented by fishing parties as Rock creek. The westfork of this creek parallels the Skalkahoroad from the West Fork Ranger Station to within four miles of Stony Lake

Camp. A trail leads from the camp intoSand Basin, where the angler comes to theheadwaters of the West Fork a number ofstreams contributing their water supply toform the main stream. Here the water •dashes through rocky canyons and thenthe stream spreads out into wide meadows, where thousands of native trout abound. This portion of Rock creek is far above thesapphire mines, and the water is' not muddied from placer operations.

Another trail leads from the camp toStony lake, Where plenty of sport can behad by those who prefer lake fishing. Anumber of rafts are on the lake, makingthe fishing easily accessible.

On the western slope of the Sapphirerange is the Skalkaho creek, which parallels the road for miles. It is a picturesque, tumhling, clear, cold mountain stream, withplenty of those attractive spots where youknow the big ones are hiding.

Upon reaching the Bitter Root valley oneencounters the majestic Bitter Root riverwending its way to its confluence with theClark's Fork of the Columbia west of Missoula. Countless lesser streams empty intoit from both sides its entire length and, to-

Theseforests, embracing as they do some of thefinest mountains, woods, and streams in theNorthwest, offer an ideal vacation land. Here one may camp, climb mountains, fish, hunt, or just relax to his heart's content. The state fish and game laws apply on theforests as well as off, and in the Missoulaand Bitter Root forests on the Skalkaho itis necessary to obtain a permit for a campfire. These permits may be secured free ofcharge from any forest ranger, or at StonyLake Camp. The traveler is always expected to observe the rules of good sanitation and care with fire. Outside of thesefew comomn-sense rules there are no unpleasant restrictions for those who wouldenjoy these natural playgrounds.

Fires are a danger throughout the Northwest each summer, and are a special menace in seasons when the rainfall is light andthe woods dry. Many of the most destructive fires have been started by the carelessness of the camper who has neglected toproperly extinguish his campfire, the heedless smoker who has thrown a cigar or cigarette butt from a car into the roadsidebrush, or the fisherman who has forgotten
