Unified Basketball Begins! The Bow Unified Basketball Team will have it's season opener on January 13th against Manchester West. The game

will be in the BHS gym and starts at 3:30 PM We look forward seeing students and staff at the game to support our team..

Learning Commons News: The Learning Commons is designated as a quiet study area during assessments and students that want to talk will

be directed to the cafeteria. Students who wnat to leave the learning commons have a choice of leaving the building or going to the cafeteria. They will not be allowed to go to their locker or return from the cafeteria. All materials

they need should be brought with them; students will not be permitted in the hallways without a pass. Also, the

Learning Commons will be closing at 3:00 during this time.

Later this year we will be conducting a YALSA (Young Adult Library Association) Teen Tech Week, March 8 -14, 2015. This is an exciting opportunity for our students; stay tuned for more information!

Bow High School Principal’s Report - January, 2015

For this Principal’s Report I have asked Ms. Michelle Jacques and Ms. Sara Evans to provide a comprehensive update

on our Performing Arts Program for the School Board and Community.

Vocal Ensembles

Concert Choir has been off to a great start this fall! This year, we have 34 students enrolled in the class (an increase

from 24 students the previous year). Students have been working on repertoire of increasing difficulty and from a

variety of styles for our October and December concerts, and will now be working on their individual vocal technique

as a part of our Solo and Ensemble unit. We have also been performing at various events within the community, in-

cluding BHS pep rallies and Poetry Out Loud. In the Spring semester, we are looking forward to our performance at

the NHMEA Large Group Festival, our Spring Pops concert, and a workshop with the Keene State Chamber Singers

led by Dr. Sandra Howard.

The BHS Acapella ensemble has returned for its second year as a part of the department! We have approximately 25

students involved in this after-school performing ensemble; these students include choir members, students who

primarily play another instrument, and students joining the department for the first time! Our first performance was

at the December concert, but we have new music in store for our many Spring performances!

All Shook Up

Our fall production of All Shook Up was a massive success!! Students and audiences loved this fun, rock ‘n’ roll pro-

duction and we had great audiences for each of our three performances! This production involved 35 students in the

cast and over 20 students in backstage roles, including tech, set painting, pit band members and more. Students

certainly challenged themselves with this extremely difficult score and many dance numbers, but they rose to the

challenge and produced a great performance!

Instrumental Ensembles

Concert Band continues to grow in musical strength and talent, with great leadership from our upperclassmen and

enthusiasm and energy from our large freshman class. We welcomed 17 freshmen to the band this fall (our largest

freshmen class to date), including students from Dunbarton and Hooksett, and have 35 total students in band this

year. The students readily accept the challenge of performing good quality, high level band literature and they play

with passion, enthusiasm and commitment, as evidenced by their recent performance at the Winter Concert. The

band continues to perform at school and community events including Homecoming, Poetry Out Loud, and our annual

holiday performance at White Rock Senior Living. We’re looking forward to beginning work on our music for the

NHMEA Large Group Festival in March and looking ahead to our Spring Concert and Memorial Day performances.

We’ll also be welcoming clinicians from Concord Community Music School to work with our students in sectionals

during the month of January as part of our annual partnership with this great local resource.

Our individual band students continue to find success in state music festivals. Katie Perry, Samantha Lulka, Paige

Bourassa, and Sadie Warburton were selected to participate in the All New England Band Festival at Plymouth State

University in November. Julia Ladd was accepted to the NH All State Band on bassoon for the third year and was

selected to participate in the NH Chamber Music Festival as well.

String Orchestra has seen an increase in members this year, primarily as a result of the addition of a string program

at Bow Memorial School and offering orchestra as a class for credit at BHS for the first time this year. With over 30

students involved in the string ensemble at BMS, we look forward to those students continuing with their string per-

formance opportunities when they reach BHS. The string orchestra at BHS is comprised of nearly 15 members of

varying ages and experience levels, from an advanced 5th grade violinist up through both beginning and advanced

adults. The ensemble is anchored by some very talented high school string players who show infinite patience and

acceptance to everyone in the group. This ensemble has truly found its voice this year and is playing very well.

Their performance at our Winter Concert was one of the strongest the group has ever had and we look forward to

the rest of our performances this year.

Jazz Ensemble is truly a “big band” this year, which is very exciting! We have full jazz band instrumentation, includ-

ing saxes, brass, and a strong rhythm section, as well as euphonium, flute, and clarinet. Nearly half the band is

freshmen or new-to-the-ensemble underclassmen and it has been great to see them be so enthusiastic about playing

jazz. The jazz ensemble has been invited to participate in a clinic at SNHU in March with Doug Beach, a renowned

jazz musician, composer, and publisher. This clinic will include workshops with Mr. Beach and a performance featur-

ing the participating school ensembles. This is a great opportunity that we are eagerly looking forward to!

Upcoming Events

Hosting NH Educational Theatre Guild One-Act Festival

This March, Bow will be hosting the NH Educational Theatre Guild One-Act Festival. This is a statewide competition

where high schools will present various productions to compete for a space in the regional (and possibly national)

levels of competition. Our students, while serving as hosts, will have the opportunity to meet and interact with thea-

ter students from across the state, watch a variety of performances, and hear feedback from highly qualified judges.

We are an ideal hosting site because of our location and great theater space; both the NHETG organization and our

students are excited to see the competition take place at Bow this year!

Because we are hosting the festival, we also have the opportunity to present a one-act performance as a part of the

competition. The students and I are looking at whether this is something they are interested in pursuing, but we

may be able to offer a third performance opportunity for our theater kids this year!

Performing Arts Department Trip to NYC

During Intersession, approximately 50 students from the performing arts department will be attending a trip to NYC.

Students will see many of the famous sights in NYC, including Times Square, the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, the

Natural History Museum, and Central Park. Students will also have the opportunity to see two Broadway productions

(tentatively scheduled to be The King and I and Disney’s Aladdin). Most exciting of all, students will participate in a

Broadway workshop; we will work on material from a modern Broadway show in advance and then workshop the

material with Broadway professionals who are directly involved with the production! We are so excited for this

unique opportunity and amazing trip!

Mid-Terms:

Dear Parent/Guardian,

The end of the first semester is quickly approaching and with it mid-term assessments. This year mid-term assess-ments will be held Tuesday, January 20, Wednesday, January 21, Thursday, January 22 and Friday, January 23.

All assessments will be two hours long. Students will be required to stay in both their assessments for the full two

hours. Please remind them to bring a book or some work to do in the event they finish them before the end of the period.

There will be two assessment periods each day. Each assessment will be preceeded by a thirty minute review peri-

od. The review periods will be from 7:30am to 8:00am and from 10:15am to 10:45am. Assessments will be held from 8:00am to 10:00am and from 10:45am to 12:45am. Teachers will be available for students from

12:45pm to 2:50pm each day. Students must be prompt for all of their assessments. Students who are late should not be admitted. Late students must report to the office and meet with the principal or as-

sistant principal before make-up will be approved. A student must have a pass from the main office in order to be admitted to the make-up assessment. If a student is absent, parents must call and notify

an administrator of their child’s absence and the reason for the absence.

Midterm Assessments will cover all the information presented during the first half of the year. This assessment will (in effect) be a midterm for full year classes and will be a final for semester classes.

There will be no exemptions from midterm assessments.

Students will only be required to be at school during their assessment periods. Students who do not have an as-

sessment must either be in a designated area of the school or must leave school property. No one will

be permitted to loiter on or around school grounds during assessments. The following areas will be open for students during assessment periods. The cafeteria will be open for leisure studying and the library will be open

for serious, quiet studying.

If school is canceled for inclement weather conditions, we will continue with the canceled day's schedule on the first

day back. For example, if school were to be canceled on Monday, Monday’s schedule would be followed on Tuesday.

Intersession updates:

Intersession activities will be handed out to students on Tuesday, January 13! Students will meet with their in-

tersession instructors that Friday, January 16.

There will be a required meeting for parents and students of overnight intersession trips on Tuesday, January 27, from 5-6pm. Important information will be given out at this time.

Volunteers Needed NOFA-NH, the Northeast Organic Farming Association of NH, will host their annual Winter Conference

on Jan. 31, 2015 at Rundlett Middle School in Concord, NH. NOFA-NH is one of our community partners that

hosted a BHS student for an internship several years ago. They are looking for volunteers to help with the

day of the conference which includes a keynote, many workshops, lunch, and a Green Market Fair. There are also opportunities to participate on the conference committee which meets biweekly at NH Audubon in

Concord. Please contact winterconference@nofanh.org or call 224-5022 for more details.

From the School Counseling Office Seniors:

College application deadlines are approaching. Things that should be completed prior to mailing:

complete the teacher recommendation and counselor recommendation forms in Naviance (under the "about me"

tab), which includes the waiver agreement. That waiver is just for your BHS documents. add your teacher(s) as a recommender under the Colleges tab -> colleges I'm applying to -> teacher recommen-

dations, which sends them an email and allows them access to your Naviance account to upload their forms.

Be sure all of your colleges in Naviance are up to date.

update your application deadlines with all of your colleges in Naviance ( EA/ED/ regular decision, etc)

complete the common app matching so that we can send documents through Naviance to Common App.

read through the senior check list located at http://www.bownet.org/BHS/pdf/Senior%20Checklist.pdf to make

sure you have finalized all other steps (sending scores through Collegeboard, CSS profile, etc)

Scholarships & Grants

Scholarships are coming in...they are posted in Naviance...get in on the money and apply today! The Red Sox Scholarship is due January 30th.

Continue to work on your career and community service hours, you will need 20 hours completed to graduate. It

looks great to have these hours already posted to your transcript when applying to college. See the volunteer op-

portunities within these announcements and on the BHS website.

Mark your calendars for an informational evening on January 28th at 6:30 PM in the BHS Auditorium. The College

Overview for Juniors will be presented by NHHEAF (NH Higher Education Assistance Foundation). Applying for col-

lege admission can be overwhelming. There are applications to be completed, deadlines to meet, essays to write and complex language to understand. This presentation educates high school juniors and their families about the college

admission process. Attendees will receive our 2014-2015 College Insider.

The 2015 Destination College event for juniors will be held on Saturday, March 14th at Plymouth State Univer-

sity! This premier college planning event for 1000 high school juniors and their parents/guardians is a great way to get juniors on their path to college!! Registration for the event will open on February 5th, 2015. The Registration

site is www.destinationcollege.org. This site will list the scheduled workshops as well as the College Fair at-tendees.

Sophomores:

With semester two just around the corner our thoughts turn to course selection for next year. We are planning our annual tour of the Concord Regional Technology Center at Concord High School. This tour is for sophomores to see

and learn more about the offerings at the CRTC. Your son/daughter has already been given an introduction to the programs at the CRTC in a presentation this week.

Our tour of CRTC is planned for February 4, 2015 and your son/daughter has been invited to attend if they so de-

sire. Permission slips should be returned to Martha Rae in the BHS School Counseling Department no later than Wednesday, January 21, 2015 if your child wishes to go. We are actively encouraging all students to take the op-

portunity to see the programs first hand and experience the innovative and exciting offerings at the CRTC. If, after the tour, your child is interested in attending one of these courses in 2015-2016, in addition to their academic cours-

es at Bow High School, we would ask that they fill out an application for their chosen course. If you wish to learn more about the programs offered at the CRTC, the website is www.thecrtc.net. If you would like to discuss the op-

portunities available to your son/daughter with us, please contact the BHS school counseling office and we would be

happy to talk with you.

Continue to update your resume, work on your career/community hours, work hard!

Freshmen:

Start doing great things that you can add to your resume...volunteer...explore a career….record these hours.

All students should keep their resumes updated in Naviance Family Connection. Also, keep working on the 20 community service and 20 career exploration hours that will be due on January 15th of your senior year. Completed

forms can be handed into Martha Rae in the school counseling office. Forms are available for pick up in the school

counseling office and on the BHS website under “Student Life”, “Forms”. For volunteer opportunities check out our website.

Working Papers: Please see Martha Rae in the school counseling office for the “Employer’s Request for Child La-

bor” paper work. If you are 15 years old or younger you will need working papers. Once you find a job, bring the “Employer’s Request for Child Labor” form and a copy of your birth certificate to Martha Rae in the counseling office

and she will complete the “Official” working papers for you to give to your employer.
