Getting involved in the life of St Faith’s
Summer Fête Team
Can you help? Our Summer Fête this year will be on
Saturday 22nd June. Would you like to
help organise it? We’re looking for a
small team of 5 or 6 people to help plan
and run the Fête. If you think you might be able to help, please let Paul
know - call him on 023 9200 6184, or email [email protected].
Thank you.
Gift Aid Officer needed We are looking for someone to join our group of volunteers on the
Finance Team, as our Gift Aid Officer. Gift Aid is the scheme by which St
Faith’s, as a charity, can claim an extra 25% on donations from taxpayers.
This role would take about half a day a
month, and the person needs to be able to
use a computer. Full training will be given,
and the team will be on hand to help!
If you would consider taking on this important role, please speak to Paul,
or Neil Rowe, our treasurer. Please speak to Neil on a Sunday (he’s
usually at the Parish Eucharist) , or emai l him at
New Building Development Group The PCC would like to start a small group
working towards the significant structural and
decoration work needed on the church
building.
This group needs to understand what needs
to be done, form a clear project plan and statement of need, explore fund-
ing opportunities, write grant applications for the necessary work, drawing
on the expertise of others, and report regularly to the PCC .
If you would be interested in being part of this important group, please
could you let Paul know. Email him at [email protected], or call
023 9200 6184.

and the daily Bible readings for this are:
Day 1: Rev 1:1-20 Day 2: Rev 3:1-22
Day 3: Rev 4:1-11 Day 4: Rev 7:1-17
Day 5: Rev 20:11-15, 21:1-27 Day 6: Rev 22:1-21
Mothering Sunday Posy Making - 30th March Posy making for Mothering Sunday takes place at 9.30am at
the back of the church on Saturday 30th March, and all are
welcome to join in. If you have any small leaf greenery this
would be much appreciated and can be left at the back of
the church.
Lent Lunch
A very big thank you to everybody who contributed to last Sunday’s lunch.
Many people came together to make it such a good occasion that it is
impossible for me to name them all. Those who made soup or crumble,
those who set up the hall, those who served food, those who cleared and
washed up and all those who ‘turned to’ and helped before, during and after
lunch. It really is a pleasure to co-ordinate when every one is so generous
and helpful. Thank you all very much. Alison Jeanneret
Annual Parochial Church Meeting The Annual Parochial Church Meeting (APCM) will be at 3.30pm on
Sunday 28th April 2019. Please put this date in your diary.
Annual Parochial Church Meeting Reports In preparation for the Annual Church Meeting a booklet of annual reports
is put together to inform the church of activities and developments during
2018.
For this booklet we need brief reports from each of the following church
groups: PCC, Deanery Synod, Parish Centre, Fabric Committee,
Communications Forum, Mothers’ Union, Rainbow Toddlers, Cuppa and
Company, Friends of St Faiths, Flower Team, Summer Fête, Christmas
Fayre, Christmas Lunch and any other event in the life of our church in the
last year.
Completed reports need to be sent, by Monday 25th March, to either
Melodie Kreindler, PCC Secretary, at [email protected] or the
Church Office at [email protected].

Revision of St Faith’s Electoral Roll The Electoral Roll is a membership list of those who con-
sider themselves committed members of St Faith’s Church,
and as such gives them the opportunity to have their say
and also vote at the Annual Parochial Church Meeting.
This year is a complete revision because every six years each parish has to
totally revise their Electoral Roll. The closing date for applications is Sunday
7th April. Application Forms are always available at the back of the church
and in the Bulson Hall after the Parish Eucharist.
Thank you to all those people who have completed their forms but looking
at the list there are still quite a few ‘regulars’ who still need to.
Have you completed your form yet?
Why I love St Faith’s... The Communications Forum would like to know what you love about St
Faith’s, and would like to use some of your quotes in our publicity about the
church. If you have something you really like about our church community,
please write it down on the sheet on the table near the sound desk, along
with your name. Thank you.
Church Spring Cleaning - 9am Friday 5th April We’re going to give the church a spring clean! Please join us
at 9am on Friday 5th April, to polish, dust, hoover and clean.
The more the merrier! And please bring your own cleaning
implements, if you can.
News from St Faith’s Mothers’ Union THIS MORNING there is a cake stall in the Bulson
Hall after the 9.30am Parish Eucharist and all monies
raised will help the Mothers’ Union worldwide projects.
On Monday 8th April MU members will take part in a sponsored walk
from St Faith’s Church to St. Peter's at Titchfield. There are 7 MU members taking part - Mary Shepherd and Liz Emery (8.00am), Sara Bennett, Merriel
Dixon, Alma Hadley and Barbara Hawkins (9.30am) and Alison Jeanneret
(Sunday@11). The monies raised will go to the ‘Away From It All’ (A.F.I.A.)
fund which offers a short break to those who are in need. This allows us to
bring families, living in local Refuges, for a day at the seaside.

Lent Reflection - 24th March 2019
The God of Second Chances Each week in Lent, Revd Ann Leonard will be writing a Lent Reflection for us.
Does your Christian faith make a difference to your life and in the lives of
others?
This week’s set gospel (Luke 13:1-9) contains the story of the fig tree which
had not borne any fruit. The owner wanted to get rid of the fig tree
because it was basically useless - using up resources and giving nothing in
return. The gardener pleads for a second chance and more manure!
This is part of the gospel of grace – that Jesus gives us a second chance - but
there is also a warning in this parable – that the fig tree cannot go on being
useless forever.
It also teaches us that we might well need more nourishment in order to grow. If you are feeling less than useful, can you identify what the ‘manure’
you need to enrich the soil of your spiritual life might be – so that you can
produce more fruit?
St Paul tells us that the fruits of the spirit are love, joy, peace, forbearance,
kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Last Saturday
John and I were at our cathedral for the installation of the new Dean who
preached a very interesting sermon – in a way ‘setting out his stall’ for a
more inclusive church where everyone is truly welcome and where the
fruits of the spirit are encouraged to flourish. As well as love, joy and peace, he singled out kindness, patience and especially self-control, for our
attention as individual Christians and as Christian communities witnessing in
our world.
In the New Testament reading for today (1Corinthians 10:1-13) Paul is
warning the Corinthians not to behave as the Hebrews in the wilderness
had done. They had tested God, worshipped idols and constantly
complained to Moses. I wonder what St Paul might say to us? Worshipping
idols might seem to us a very foreign idea belonging to an age long past and
yet anything or anyone in our lives whom we think of as more important
than God is in a sense an idol. And then, it is so easy to grumble and complain – especially about our political situation – but perhaps this is
where self-control is needed.
7
Someone told me that she had given up complaining for Lent - and was
shocked at how difficult it was and how often critical or complaining
thoughts came into her head. What she tried to do instead was to think of
something or someone to be thankful for …… and I have found that this has
transformed my listening to or watching the news. Whereas before I would
be so critical and judgemental, now I try (though sometimes fail!) to give
thanks for someone’s work or efforts or attitude – I do commend trying it!
The Eucharist is where we give thanks for Jesus and all that he did for us in
his life and death and resurrection and all that he is for us now. We are
‘Eucharistic’ people and one way that people should be able to identify us as
Christians is just that - thankfulness and gratitude. If we are full of
gratitude, there is no room for complaints, grudges and
unforgiveness….. but I am very conscious that for those in the midst of
sadness, grief and heartache, gratitude is virtually impossible and for those
who have been hurt by others, forgiveness seems impossible without God’s
grace.
Nelson Mandela was asked if he was angry with his jailers when he walked
out of prison after 27 years. ‘Yes, I was angry, and a little afraid.’ answered
Mandela, ‘After all, I’d not been free in so long’….’ But,’ he added, ‘when I
felt that anger welling up inside me, I realised that if I continued to hate
them after I got outside the gate, then they would still have me.’ With a
smile, Mandela concluded: ‘I wanted to be free, so I let it go.’
If our hearts are critical or we are finding forgiveness difficult, then this
hymn about God’s grace and forgiveness written by a relative of John
Herklots, might prove to be the ‘manure’ we need to grow and bear fruit in
this aspect of Christ-likeness.
'Forgive our sins as we forgive,' you taught us, Lord, to pray,
but you alone can grant us grace to live the words we say.
2. How can your pardon, reach and bless the unforgiving heart,
that broods on wrongs and will not let old bitterness depart?
3. In blazing light your cross reveals the truth we dimly knew:
what trivial debts are owed to us, how great our debt to you!
4. Lord, cleanse the depths within our souls, and bid resentment cease;
then, bound to all in bonds of love, our lives will spread your peace.
Rosamund E Herklots

For your prayers during the next week Collect for the 3rd Sunday in Lent:
Almighty God, whose most dear Son went not up to joy
but first he suffered pain,
and entered not into glory before he was crucified:
mercifully grant that we, walking in the way of the cross,
may find it none other than the way of life and peace;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen
Those to be christened: Sophie Bullen & Orla Bone
Those who are unwell: Martin Over, Sue Harrap, Vicki Edwards, Priscilla
Barker, Sheila Hester, Angela Whitbread, Margaret Parker and George Fisher.
Those who have died: Lilian Panter, Karen Mayor and Ruth Merriman
Anniversaries of Death: Jonathan Self (25th); Diana Brodley (26th);
Ronald Ross, Raymond Birch, Yvonne Stote and Basil Ford (30th).
Dear Father in heaven, in quietness we come to you and ask you for your
Spirit. We ask this especially for the time of waiting still required of us as we
hope and strive for light to come into all hearts, for light to shine where there
is so much death. We must not despair of our inner life even when life around
us rages as if it would suck us down into its whirlpool with no way out. But
you will guard us. Watch over us, we pray, also in hours of temptation, so that
we may remain under your care. Watch over us so that we have hope and joy
in you, assured that your goal for us all is true life from above, a life of
resurrection. Amen.
A Prayer for Brexit:
God of hope, in these times of change,
unite our nation and guide our leaders with your wisdom.
Give us courage to overcome our fears, and help us to build a future
in which all may prosper and share; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
St Faith’s Vision: Our vision is to be a welcoming progressive
Christian community of all ages and all stages of faith, nurturing
spiritual growth, and representing God’s living presence in our
town.
