Faith Notes These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand and they shall be as frontals on your forehead. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. D eu t er on om y 6 : 6 - 9
Summer is quickly flying by us, and we will soon be starting school this month.
Teachers and students alike will be busying themselves with the task of education. But what is
education, or what does it mean to be educated?
Webster’s 1828 Dictionary defines education in this way, “Education comprehends all
that series of instruction and discipline which is intended to enlighten the understanding,
correct the temper, and form the manners and habits of youth, and fit them for usefulness in
their future stations. To give children a good education in manners, arts and science is
important; to give them a religious education is indispensable; and an immense responsibility
rests on parents and guardians who neglect these duties.” This older version of Webster’s
Dictionary gives us a stirring call to our responsibility as parents and a church with regard to our
children and their education. But one can not give what one does not possess one’s self. If we
are going to be faithful to the Word of God quoted above from Deuteronomy, we must make it a
point to know His Word and Himself so we can “educate” our children and grandchildren, be
they ours or those that we come in contact with at church.
Many have the mistaken idea that it is the responsibility of the schools or church to
educate our children. Yes, they play a part, but the main responsibility for educating our
children falls on the shoulders of the parents. This seems to be a lost concept in our modern
society which so often focuses responsibility onto the state or church rather than the family.
Some of this has to do with the break down of the modern family. One of our tasks here at Faith
Lutheran then is to build up individuals and families so they can carry out their responsibility to
Biblically educate their children and themselves.
Luther’s Prefaces to the Large and Small Catechism are very convicting with regard to
the responsibility of pastors and parents in educating their children in the things of God, and I
would commend them to your reading. (The Prefaces can be found in The Book of Concord or in
more complete editions of the Catechisms.) Some seem to think that once they are done with
school or Confirmation that they are now “educated” and don’t need to go to Sunday School or
work on educating themselves any longer, but education is a life-long process. We should all be
life-long learners. A phrase that used to be popular is “Leaders are readers,” and we should all
be striving to be leaders in our homes and churches.
To this end, we will be having Rally Day on September 18th to rally us in our
responsibility to educate ourselves in the things of the Lord. We will be using a new curriculum,
Answers Bible Curriculum (ABC), and be reviving age-level appropriate classes for all ages, so
there are lots of opportunities to teach and to learn this fall at Faith. Rally Day will have a “Big”
theme as we learn about our Big God who has done Big things in our lives.
Another opportunity that the leadership here at Faith is looking into to help equip you
in growing in Christ is through RightNow Media. RightNow Media is a Netflix-type Bible study
library with over 10, 000 discipleship videos for kids, youth, and adults. If we decide to use this
program, it would come to you absolutely free. The church would pay a small monthly fee so
that the whole church body and whoever we would like to send an invitation to, could use this
service for free. Some of the leadership of the church is already reviewing this material, but if
you would like to review it as well, let the church office know and we will send you an e-mail to
get access. All of this is to help you fulfill the command from Deuteronomy listed above, as well
as verse 5 which proceeds it: “You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all
your soul and with all your might.” May the Lord empower us through the Holy Spirit to fulfill
these commands this school year. May God bless you as you educate yourself in the Lord! In His Agape,
Pastor Taylor +

Taylor Family to Travel to Indonesia for Vacation
As some of you may be aware, Liz’s only brother is getting married in Indonesia on
September 10th. As a result, Liz, I and the girls will be going to Indonesia for the wedding
and to see Liz’s Mom and relatives. We will leave on Tuesday, August 23rd, early in the
morning from San Antonio and return on Tuesday, September 13th, late at night. Due to
the length of the flight to Indonesia and back, we will be spending all of our vacation time
overseas this year. We covet your prayers as we travel, especially with small children on
very long flights. It will be an exciting time for Liz’s mom though, as she has not seen
Sophia in person, but only over the internet.
Pastor Don Ofsdahl will be covering the Sunday services while I’m gone, as well as
providing pastoral coverage for major emergencies. To reach Pastor Ofsdahl, please call
the church office or his number, 210-314-9389. For any major emergencies, it would be
best to contact the church office first, so they are aware of the situation and can get
people praying and then contact Pastor Ofsdahl with details. If emergencies occur outside
of normal business hours, feel free to contact Pastor Ofsdahl directly.
Normally we would not be taking vacation time right at the beginning of the school
year and when many church activities start back up, but this is when the wedding is
scheduled, so we have to make do as we can. Since I will be gone, Amy Casey and other
planning for our new Sunday School curriculum and Rally Day, may need extra help and
assistance. Please be available to them as you are able. Thanking you in advance for this
help.
We have tried to schedule many meetings and trainings before we leave for
Indonesia. There will be Sunday School Teacher training on Sunday, August 14th, the
second session of Communion Assistant training (if you didn’t attend the one in July) on
Monday, August 15th, and a meeting with Confirmation parents on Wednesday, August
17th. Please be aware of these meetings if they affect you. More details on these meetings
can be found throughout the newsletter or bulletins.
When we return, there will be a number of activities that will kick-off right away as
well. Confirmation will start back on Wednesday, September 14th, for 7th and 8th graders.
Bible Study on Genesis will start on Thursday, September 15th. We will be covering the
first 11 chapters of Genesis during the fall. Rally Day will be on September 18th and then
a New Member Class will follow on Monday, September 19th. Church Council will meet on
September 20th, and the annual Outdoor Worship and Church Picnic will be held on
September 25th. So, lots going on when we return. Please keep us in prayer for all the
activities to be accomplished and started when we return home.
If you have questions before we leave, please don’t hesitate to call, 361-772-
6363 or home, 830-491-5254. We will have some cell coverage in Indonesia and some
access to e-mail and such, but it may be sporadic. Once again, we appreciate all you do
and your willingness to step-up while we are gone. Thank you for your support and love!
May God bless you mightily as we begin a new school year in the power of the Holy Spirit!
In His Love,
The Taylor Family

August Item of the Month for Christian Cupboard Donations
For the month of August the Christian Cupboard states that with school
beginning soon, their most needed items are hygiene products. This includes
things like shampoo, body wash, deodorant, and toothpaste.
Please bring your donations through August 31st and place them in the
basket in the narthex marked Christian Cupboard. Faith’s members have
been wonderful supporters of the Christian Cupboard, and the Social
Concerns Committee thanks you for your ongoing generosity.
Pastor Taylor Outlines New Sunday School Curriculum The new curriculum that we will be using in Sunday School this Fall is
called Answers Bible Curriculum. This curriculum will be a wonderful resource
in helping us to keep the Bible as our foundation. The curriculum will be
divided into quarters with the first quarter focusing on the faithfulness of our
God and the Word of God. After establishing the trustworthiness of the Word of
God, the curriculum will take us chronologically through the Bible, helping
students to place the Biblical accounts in their proper context in Scripture.
Since everyone from pre-school to adults will be studying the same material, it
will make it easier for parents and children to discuss their Sunday School
lessons together. The curriculum will also provide take-home sheets for the
younger grades, to encourage discussion with parents, as Answers sees the
parents as the primary stewards and educators of their children.
Some other unique features of Answers Bible Curriculum:
Keeping God as the central focus and main actor – the other persons of
Scripture are seen in relation to how God is acting in their situation
Teaching the Bible accounts as true history and not simply stories or myths
Making sure students open and read their own Bibles, as well as teaching
them how to study those Bibles
Putting the Bible accounts in their proper Biblical order, so that students
know where the various stories are in the Bible
Teaching basic apologetics throughout the curriculum so students are able
to defend and apply what they study to real life situations
So come on out and join us as we study God’s Word together. Rally Day
is September 18th with actual instruction beginning on the 25th of September.
Sunday School will start at 10: 30 AM with about a 10-minute opening that will
include both children and adults for a time of singing and worship before we go
to our classes.
We will have a need for more teachers this year due to having multiple
age levels, so we encourage everyone to come out and either teach or be a
participant. Just because you don’t have kids in Sunday School doesn’t mean
that you don’t need to be attending. We are all sending a message to our
young people if we are not attending Sunday School, regardless of what our
words may say—our actions speak louder. Remember, parents, just dropping
off your children for Sunday School is not enough, you need to be attending or
teaching Sunday School, just as much as your children need to be in class.
Let’s fulfill our Baptismal vows, and make Sunday School a true family affair.

by Amy Casey, Parish Education Associate
While we are on a break from Sunday School, Parish Education is working on BIG plans for the year ahead. In order to transition into our new curriculum and make a BIG impact in the lives of the children at Faith, we need your help. We are going back to the traditional Sunday School setting. The classes will be divided in the following manner.
Pre-K (3 year olds and up) and Kindergarteners 1st and 2nd graders
3rd through 5th graders Junior High (6th, 7th, 8th grades) Senior High (9th to 12th grades)
Adult class will be taught by Pastor Taylor
We need two teachers for each class. In doing this, teachers are able to co-teach alternate weeks and allow for flexibility while offering consistency for the kids. As of publication date we have ONE teacher. I won't make you do math...we need NINE wonderful disciples to teach the word of God to the young people of Faith. Please prayerfully consider where you are being called to help. If teaching is not your forte, we also need volunteers with musical talent to help lead music. We would love to have many talented people to help in this area for an opening session filled with energy and variety.
Please call me at 830-624-5781 and let me know what grade level you would like to teach this year!! Training will be held on Sunday, August 14th, to familiarize all teachers with the new curriculum. Our teachers need to be in place as soon as possible to be best prepared to teach our kids.

Announcing “Expelled” Movie Night and Genesis Bible Study The heavens are telling of the glory of God: and their expanse is declaring
the work of His hands. Psalm 19: 1
Have you contemplated the wonder of the world around you lately? Most
of us are rushing through life so quickly that we barely even see the world around
us. The beginning of Psalm 19 tells us that the heavens and the creation are
telling us about the glory and wonder of God. That the things we see in creation
are his handy work.
That God created the world is not what the average student is taught in
school anymore—much less that the creation is crying out to the wonder of our
Creator God. The modern, public school declares that evolution is the way that the
universe came into being. The theory of evolution is generally no longer taught as
a theory, but the fact of the matter. But is evolution where the facts really point?
The Bible seems to disagree with this hypothesis, as do the facts of nature. So why
has evolution become so popular and so dominate?
One reason is that Christians no longer know their Bibles or respect the
authority of His Word. Another reason is that we have become ignorant of the facts
of nature and have allowed godless professors and programs to fill our minds with
error, rather than researching the facts for ourselves. When Christians studied
their Bibles and the world around them, they were not so easily deceived as we
are today.
We have two unique opportunities being presented to us this August and
September here at Faith Lutheran to help us become better informed. The first will
occur on Thursday, August 18th, at 6:30 PM when we will show the movie,
“Expelled.” “Expelled” is a fascinating look at the bias that is now a standard
reality in most of our institutions of higher learning. “Expelled” delves into the
reality that unless you believe the evolutionary view and tow that line, you very
possibly may find yourself out of a job. This “political correctness” has far reaching
consequences that every person needs to be aware of, but especially those that
have students or grandchildren in the halls of higher learning.
The other opportunity will be our Bible study for the fall on the first 11
chapters of Genesis, which will begin on Wednesday, September 15th, at 7 PM. As
we explore these first chapters of Genesis, we will be confronted with a worldview
that is totally opposed to the modern notion of evolution. We will see that the
Word of God says that God is the Creator and that His creation is here to bring Him
glory, as our above Psalm declares. We will see that our God truly is an awesome
God on a multitude of levels. Much confusion reigns about these early chapters
due largely to the fact that Satan knows just how dangerous they are to “his case.”
If a man or woman can come away with a Christian worldview of the Book of
Genesis, Satan knows that much of the rest of the Scripture will easily fall into
place for such a person. Thus, Satan has attacked this book of the Bible probably
more than any other. For the devil knows that a man or woman firmly based on
the foundation of Genesis will be a hard person indeed to overcome in any
significant way.
So I highly encourage you to make room in your schedule for these
opportunities and to have your mind stimulated by the Word of God. Many of the
maladies of our time have their basis in an improper understanding of the Creator
and the creation. May you use some of your valuable time to be at least as wise as
the heavens and the creation and acknowledge Him who created you and in whom
“we live and move and have our being” (Acts 17: 28.) May this new school year
find us all more educated in the Lord Jesus Christ. Have a wonderful August! God
bless!

English Bible Camp to Begin in Estonia with EEMN
We would like to thank the congregation for the outpouring of prayers and
monetary support for our travels to Estonia for this year’s English Bible Camp on the
Island of Saaremaa, just off the eastern coast of Estonia in the Baltic Ocean. As you
receive this month’s newsletter, we will be completing our preparations for this trip.
This is the second year for the English Bible Camp at Saaremaa. Estonia English Bible
Camp is different from the camps in Slovakia, Latvia, and Russia in that this camp is
directed to adults rather than children. The theme is Living in Hope—Lessons from the
life of David. The theme verse is Romans 15:13, “May the God of hope fill you with all
joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of
the Holy Spirit.”
We will leave on Wednesday, August 3rd, arriving in Tallinn, the capital of
Estonia, on Thursday afternoon. This will give us four days of team building prior to our
first day in the classroom on Monday, August 8th. Information regarding camp activities
and events will be communicated to the church office the week of August 8-12.
As you pray for us during this camp, use this daily focus for the message we will
be sharing. Please pray for the Holy Spirit to guide us as we introduce students to
Biblical concepts, develop relationships with our new friends in Estonia, and strive to
succeed in our promise of facilitating conversational English skills and vocabulary.
Day 1—Monday, 8/8 – God loves us and wants us to have hope.
Day 2—Tuesday, 8/9– Our sins separate us from God. But God offers forgiveness
through Jesus.
Day 3 – Wednesday, 8/10– God’s Mercy: Sin is bad news, but Mercy is good news.
God is faithful, and we have faith and hope in his promises in the Bible
Day 4 – Thursday, 8/11 – God’s Forgiveness – God forgives people who believe in him.
He wants people to trust and love him and to hope in him.
Day 5 – Friday, 8/12 – Our Future – this is a day of victory – our sins are forgiven. With
God’s love and forgiveness, we can live our lives in hope and look forward to being with
Jesus forever.
Each day a team member will give a personal testimony sharing their journey of
faith and hope through life’s joys and struggles. Linda will present her testimony on
Tuesday and Harry on Friday.
Please pray that:
God would be glorified by EVERY aspect of our trip.
Each of us, as well as the Estonians with whom we work and share with would have
a personal and powerful encounter with God.
The unconditional love of God would radiate in and through each of our lives.
God would put a hedge of protection around the entire trip.
Satan would be bound from anything that distracts anyone from hearing the voice
of God in the area where we’ll be sharing.
All participating on this trip would be sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit.
God’s Word would be proclaimed with power and produce life change
(transformation.)
God would give us strength and good health throughout the trip.
God would give wisdom to those speaking and teaching and listening ears to the
people we come in contact with during the trip.
All team members and translators would be bold and creative in sharing our faith.
We would make quick adjustments to time and cultural changes (6 AM in Seguin is
2:00 PM in the afternoon in Estonia.) Our classes are from 2 to 7 PM each day.
God Bless,
Harry and Linda Dietz

Ladies Luncheon Deemed Successful The Women of Faith held their annual Noon Salad Luncheon in July with a total
of 41 women in attendance. They had the opportunity to learn more about Liz
Taylor’s journey to Christianity, and she answered questions from the audience. It
was an afternoon of good food, fellowship, and learning as Sisters in Christ.
It’s back to school time! School supplies are going on sale. So, it’s time to start collecting items for
Lutheran World Relief School Kits. The items needed are 70 sheet spiral
notebooks, 12 inch rulers marked with inches and centimeters, 2 ½ inch erasers,
small pencil sharpeners, 5” blunt-tip scissors, unsharpened Number 2 pencils with
erasers, ball point pens with the caps, and 24-count boxed crayons. Any items you
have to donate may be left in the small kitchen in the plastic containers. Thank
you to our congregation for all your help and support!
Thank you for all your support after my car accident. The Angels were with me and my injuries were minor. I thank you for all the
wonderful cards, emails, calls, text
messages, and more. You made the healing
process pleasant.
