Faith Lutheran Church - Volume 3, Issue 1 - January, 2019 2019 - The Adventure Year
Happy New Year! We look forward to a new year and
the adventure it brings.
Our church prays for and wants to be a light for God.
To accomplish this, 2019 is the year we will move
forward on a few fronts.
The first step on our adventure is to join LCMC with
3 Days of Prayer. Let’s remember from whom we
receive our blessings and gifts. Then, let’s pray for
God’s guidance for people and projects. LCMC
provides suggestions for prayer each day. Bookmarks
are available with LCMC topics on one side – Faith
Lutheran topics on the other side. Find these
Bookmarks on Fellowship tables and the Welcome
Center. Take them home to use in prayer.
WoW! Resumes on January 9. Meals will again be
provided at 5:30pm to 6:20pm and worship begins at
6:30pm. This upbeat service is a great opportunity to
worship during the week.
One of our adventures includes a strategic plan
initiative - LifeKids as a 5-day per week after school
program. The LifeKids Task Force is meeting in early
January. If you are interested in working with this
team, please contact Matt Essick. It is the desire of
Faith that children and families of Spencer will be
blessed by this program.
The Call Committee is working diligently to find the
new Discipleship Pastor for Faith and St. John’s
churches. This pastor will also lead our LifeKids
program in to the future. Please pray that God will
send the person He knows will be the best fit for this
unique opportunity.
Our Capital Campaign projects – the new offices and
new sound system will be part of our adventure this
year. Thanks to the Building & Properties team the
new offices are taking shape. Stop by to see the
handiwork of our talented men and women! The next
project, the sound system, will be installed this spring
or summer.
Our Adventure Year
will be full of fun,
challenges, and
surprises. Let’s pray
and confidently move
forward with God’s
guidance and blessing.
Here we go!!!

An Adventure of Faith As this New Year begins, we reaffirm our
mutual devotion to the Lord Jesus Christ.
We seek to be children of light in a dark
world; children of love in a world filled with
hatred.
For our congregation, this will be a year of
adventure. We have dreamed, discussed,
and prayed for a number of years about
the goals we have set for this calendar
year. We are proposing many new
developments, the calling of another
pastor, the launch of expanded programs
to serve the children and families of
Spencer, and mission travels. May our Lord
give us the power and the will to
accomplish them!
What lies before us reminds me of God’s
people immediately after they crossed the
Red Sea. God had given them a great
victory over Pharoah and freed them from
slavery. Now they journeyed in the
wilderness, totally dependent upon the
LORD God.
Yet, in the wilderness, they were never lost.
God’s presence was a visible pillar of
cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night,
constantly reassuring them that the Lord
was with them. God Himself was in their
midst.
Also, despite the barren
desert through which
they walked, God
provided for them each
day. He sent manna
from heaven to feed
them, and water from
the rock to quench their
thirst.
God’s power always worked for them.
God protected them from their enemies,
enabling them to defeat them in battle.
God is always active and on the move. In
our journey of faith, we must keep our eyes
on Him. We seek to follow everywhere He
leads and do all that He calls us to do. He
will continually move us toward receiving
His promises.
In this year of living the adventure of faith,
we will support each other in prayer and
trust our Father in heaven deeply. He is
perfectly faithful. Remember, with God all
things are possible.
Together with you on this adventure of
faith,
From the Pastor’s Desk

Security at Faith Lutheran This topic is very relevant these days. Many churches around the country have had incidents they never expected. Faith Lutheran Church is finalizing a security plan for the safety of all. Two church members, Eric Tigges and Karen Brandt, provided the leadership for this plan. They organized training meetings and worked together to get all the security pieces in place. Those pieces include:
A security guide – This guide is in the final stages of review. Once it is complete, the plans in the guide will be fully implemented.
Panic buttons – We have wireless panic buttons that can be used anywhere in the building. These buttons, when pushed, will contact law enforcement for us.
Trained members – We have identified and visited with church members who are current or retired law enforcement officers. These people have agreed to assist in a situation should it arise. In addition, other members who attended the trainings are willing to assist as needed.
Doorways – The west doors are unlocked. The south door near the kitchen is to be locked after the worship service begins. This helps us control the number of entryways available for those who may wish to do us harm.
Faith Lutheran is among many other churches in Spencer with a security plan. While we never want security problems at our church, we need to be prepared just in case. As 2019 unfolds, we hope to add more training dates for those who are interested. If there are questions or concerns about our security plan, please contact the church office.

The Properties Team is continuing to work on the storage and new offices. The
storage area is almost ready to be sheet rocked and once sheet rocking is done
the furnace can be installed for both areas along with the sprinkler system. Also
wiring will be getting started soon and SMU already has their cables pulled.
We are always looking for help to work on projects, so if you have a free hour or
two please feel free to contact anyone on the Properties Team or Paul Behrens,
team leader, at 712-240-6000, to find out when we will be working on projects
next.
Thanks to all who have already donated time to make this project a success!
Everyone needs someone to be a friend when they are in need. Our mentors go through an intensive training program and then are linked with a person to mentor supervised by the executive director.

What’s your
next step?
Calling our Discipleship Pastor
Please pray daily for our Call Committee and for the
candidate God knows will accept the call to serve at
Faith Lutheran and St. John’s Lutheran.
If you have the name of a pastor you’d like to be considered,
please share his/her name with the Call Committee.
Committee members are: Karen Brandt, Bill Nitzel, Kris Behrens,
Jolynne Eilts, Greg Lear, Darrel Heckathorn, Beth Brockshus,
Laura Heikens, Ashley Vreeman, Sophie Behrens, and
Kyle Rouse - Chairperson.
Greetings from your Faith Lutheran Discipleship Team.
We celebrated Christmas. We celebrated Immanuel. Now the New
Year is with us and what do we do? Is the celebration past tense?
‘Bethlehem and Golgatha, the Manger and the Cross, the Birth
and the Death must always be seen together’. (J. Sidlow Baxter).
Fellow Disciples at Faith, what do we do next? What do ‘you’ do
next?
Last month, we challenged more of you to become involved in
any of the various means at Faith. Your involvement will enhance
your personal discipleship. The New Year is the perfect time to
make involvement a resolution and make a commitment about
growing your ‘discipleship’.
Recently, I heard a radio program that spoke of the importance of
‘Connectedness’ of fellow Christians. We need each other more
than we often want to admit. Ask someone that has regular
participation in a Bible Study, Journey Team or Adult Sunday
School and they will most probably share with you how it helps
them grow in their personal relationship with Jesus.
We should continue to meet and continue to encourage each
other! See Hebrews 10:23-25.
Different people can bring different perspective and different
strengths to gatherings. People ‘sharpen’ each other through
these meetings. A true friend ‘sharpens’ and inspires his or her
friends. See Proverbs 27:13.
Fellow Disciples at Faith, it is up to each of you to commit to
‘Connectedness’. Jesus was capable to do everything on his own,
He did not need anyone to complete what He came to do. Yet,
he chose disciples to be with him in His life. Brothers and sisters at
Faith, we are brothers and sisters in God’s Church and let us
continue to grow personally by growing together.

Bookmarks with prayer ideas for LCMC and Faith Lutheran are available on the
Welcome Center desk and the Fellowship tables. Take one home with you today!
Three Days of Prayer You're invited to join together with other
congregations January 1-3 for LCMC’s 7th Annual
Three Days of Prayer! Starting January 1, LCMC is
asking members of Faith Lutheran Church to set
aside some time during each of the three days to pray. The themes for each of the three days are as
follows:
Tuesday, January 1: This is a day focused on confession. We have made our lives, our relationships,
and even the church in our own image. We confess that the church belongs to Jesus and not to
us. We gather to lay down our pride, our sin and our agenda and ask the Lord of the church for
forgiveness, which He gives freely and with mercy.
Wednesday, January 2: This is a day of petition. Pray for your congregation, for the pastor, for the
leaders, for those who carry out ministries, for the Sunday School teachers, for the Confirmation
leaders, for those leading adult Bible studies and for those leading small groups. Pray for those in
hospital and nursing home ministries. Pray for all those connected to your church that they might
know God’s redeeming love for all in Christ.
Thursday, January 3: This is a day for vision. Pray that the Holy Spirit will again move through the
hearts and minds of leaders and pastors that God’s vision for His church might be revealed and
fulfilled. This is a time of prayer for renewal, revival and encouragement. Pray for God’s vision.
If you would like to receive a notification reflecting on the themes during each of the three days,
download LCMC’s app and opt-in for "Three Days of Prayer" notifications. Let's come together as
members of the body of Christ to lift one another up in prayer.
Get Mobile Updates! - By Kristy Thomas - LCMC Did you know that the LCMC App lets you sign up to receive news updates on your mobile device
based entirely on your interests? If you do sign up for our notification system, we won’t spam you with
constant daily messages. Here's a breakdown of what's available:
GENERAL NOTIFICATIONS: Select this option if you’d like to be notified of only the basics, such as major
announcements that aren’t related to attending a specific event. (Examples: New videos,
podcasts, service projects, contests, and any big news updates from the LCMC staff and boards.)
EVENT SPECIFIC NOTIFICATIONS: We use this feature to notify you when registration opens for your
favorite events, when a deadline related to an event you’ve selected is approaching, and when
any major new details get announced for that event. (For Three Days of Prayer, you’ll receive a
message reflecting on the themes during each of the three days.) App users who sign up for
these types of notifications will only receive announcements for the specific events they’ve opted
in for.
ON SITE NOTIFICATIONS: While attending a larger LCMC event such as the Annual Gathering, opting-
in for on site notifications will allow you to receive any announcements or updates that are made
during the event, such as meeting room assignments and service project information. You will only
receive these types of messages for the duration of the event you’re attending.
Here’s How: If you haven't already, download our app on your phone or tablet.
1. Open the app, click on the icon in the top left corner to access your inbox, notes, and app
settings.
2. Select "Settings", then "Notifications".
3. On the Notifications page, simply toggle on anything you'd like to get updates about.

STEWARD OF THE MONTH! KIRBY FUESTON!!
Kirby Fueston has a heart for the
children and youth of Faith
Lutheran. She has helped with
Children’s Ministry, Youth
Ministry and the Worship Team.
Kirby has taught Pre-school
Sunday School, helped with
Christmas programs, helps with
the high school youth program
(as a pie display-er, as a dancer or whatever!) and
goes on mission trips!
Kirby is now putting her name on the ballot for
Evangelism Team leader.
Well done,
Good and Faithful Servant!
January 2019 ~ Page 10
The New Year has come! You may be at
home setting goals for 2019, heading to the
gym to lose a few pounds gained from
Christmas sweets, or on a vacation with the
kids while they are on Christmas break from
school. Wherever you are, may you find new
hope, new adventures, new goals, new
opportunities, and risks, new horizons, and a
fresh start to 2019. With the Children and Youth Programs, we have
a few new adventures on the horizon! Let’s take a look.
LifeKids is expanding! Faith has been gearing up to launch a five-
day a week Afterschool Program in the Fall of 2019. There is a high
need in Spencer for this kind of programming, so we are excited to
minister to the community through the program and be God’s
hands and feet!
We look to hire another staff member to oversee the programming
of LifeKids and the Children’s Ministry at Faith Lutheran! This person
will work in conjunction with Saint John’s Lutheran Church near
Cylinder, IA, serving as their primary Pastor. This is an exciting
adventure for us as we walk by faith with Saint John’s, praying for
the right person to join our ministries.
The Confirmation Mentorship Program looks to have a fresh start at
the beginning of 2019! The program looks to extend the mentorship
process through high school, and give fresh thought and energy to
mentors.
We hope to bring more intergenerational events to Faith! Let’s mix
people of all ages through fun fellowship events. Some events that
have been discussed are: skiing at Mount Kato in February, a
Minnesota Twins game early summer, weekend camping at
Ingham in early August (along with a Sunday Worship Service and
Lake Day at Ingham), and an outdoor movie night held in Faith’s
parking lot. We hope multiple teams will work together to see this
endeavor materialize. More details to come!
With new hopes and goals on the horizon, I ask: what is God saying
to you for the year 2019? What eternal impact for the Kingdom of
God will you give over the course of this year? How can you and I
spiritually grow in 2019? How can we further God’s Kingdom in our
workplace and the people we interact with, our neighbors and
friends, our families, and our own hearts and lives?
May God give you courage and strength in the Spirit, tenacity and
perseverance, joy in praise to God, and power through the
fellowship of the saints, and grace through our Lord Jesus, to press
on into the New Year’s opportunities for the Kingdom of God!
In Christ.
