FOURTH SUNDAY ORDINARY TIME Today’s readings show us what it is like to be a prophet. As Jeremiah recounts his call, God warns him that he will need strength and perseverance to withstand the hostility he will face from “Judah’s kings and princes” and “its priests and people” (Jeremiah 1:18b). God also assures him that they “will not prevail over you, for I am with you” (1:19). The psalm reflects both of these struggles as well as deliverance from them (“salvation”). This is exactly what Jesus experiences in today’s Gospel. After he claims that his own mission is the same as what Isaiah proclaimed, at first the people marvel at his “gracious words” (Luke 4:22). Soon, however, they become suspicious, skeptical, and hostile, even threatening to kill him. But just as God promised to deliver Jeremiah, so Jesus “passed through the midst of them and went away” (4:30).

“My mouth shall be filled with your praise, shall sing your glory every day.” -Psalm 71
Of all the lines in the second reading, Paul’s famous description of love, I think the one that says it all is “Love never fails” (1 Corinthians 13:8). Out of context it sounds like the name of a hokey soap opera. Instead, Paul compares love to other gifts of the Spirit. He shows that love is the greatest gift and the reason for all gifts. First, he speaks of gifts without love. If someone was a great speaker, but without love, it would be self-serving. We’ve all heard politicians who make stirring speeches, not to move us to become better citizens, but to convince us that they are the best choice in an election. The same goes for other gifts, such as prophecy, knowledge, or faith. Without love, they become spectacles that draw attention to the one with the gift. They accomplish nothing more than to boost his or her ego, just more spiritual bling. Even self-sacrifice, without love, becomes an attention grabber. Suicide-bombers are an extreme example of this, but more a common one the person who says something like, “I gave up everything to be with you and what thanks do I get?” Next, Paul tells us everything that love is not (1 Corinthians 13:4–6). If the first part was gifts without love, this section could be called feelings without love. The feelings Paul mentions, such as jealousy, pride, brooding, and anger, usually come from thinking that everything should go my way. You can read the list yourself, but if you find anything that sounds familiar, it’s a part of your personality that makes it difficult to love. The last section is about the permanence of love. We’re not talking about romantic love here. Human love at best is “till death do us part.” But God’s love is only partially experienced in this life. Even the gifts of the Spirit are meant to carry us forward and lead others to eternal life. When we are finally united completely with God, faith will be unnecessary and hope will be realized. What remains is perfect love.

FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 3 FEBRUARY 2019
HEARING JESUS AS PROPHET After Jesus reads from the book of Isaiah of an ancient prophet’s mission, he says, “Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing” (Luke 4:21). Jesus is making a quite remarkable claim, that he sees himself as a prophet like the great prophets in Jewish history, and that his mission like the one described by that ancient prophet in Isaiah chapter 61. Luke makes it very clear that this happened in “Nazareth, where he had grown up” (4:14), and where his fellow Nazarenes were quite startled at his words. THE DIFFICULTY OF BEING - AND HEARING - A PROPHET Claiming to be a prophet means claiming to be called by God; it is an awesome responsibility to say, “The word of the Lord came to me” (Jeremiah 1:4) or “The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me” (Isaiah 61:1), the saying that Jesus adopted. Nor is it easy for others to hear someone make this claim. Prophets look very ordinary, they don’t have physical evidence of a divine call, so it is tempting to respond with, “Who are they, to talk like that?” The difference is that prophets have learned to see the world as God sees it, and their vocation is to summon people to bring God’s justice and God’s mercy to that world. This is a difficult, even dangerous task. After all, prophets have to speak truth to power, to the “kings and princes . . . its priests and people” who resist changing their ways. Jeremiah’s call is typical: God warns him of dangers to come, even as he promises him deliverance: “They will fight against you but not prevail over you / for I am with you to deliver you” (Jeremiah 1:19). Jesus faces these same difficulties, as his fellow Nazarenes—who initially admired his “gracious words” (Luke 4:22)—become skeptical, suspicious, and then openly hostile. Jesus understands these reactions: “Doubtless you will say to me . . .” (4:23), and, just as God promised Jeremiah, Jesus is “delivered”—he passes through the crowd before they attempt literally to throw him out. As we are called to act as prophets in our world today, it is a comfort to know that God will likewise deliver us. .

DO YOU HAVE OLD PALM BRANCHES FROM LAST YEAR’S PALM SUNDAY SERVICES? On Ash Wednesday each of us will be visibly Catholic; marked by an ashen cross on the forehead. This symbol is not only a sign of public penance, but also our link to Palm Sunday of last year. All are invited to return the palm received last year. It will be burnt and the resulting ash used to sign the faithful at the beginning of Lent. Baskets for palm branches will be place in the entrance of the Churches beginning February 17th. We encourage your participation in this very special tradition of our Lenten Liturgy.
PASCHAL CANDLE If you are interested in donating or funding the purchase of a Paschal Candle (perhaps in honor of a loved one), please call the parish office.
EXTRAORDINARY MINISTERS OF
HOLY COMMUNION There is a need for Eucharistic Ministers
at both parishes for all of the Masses.
During Mass, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion have the privilege of bringing the Body and Blood of Jesus to the faithful members of the assembly in assisting the presider in the distribution of Holy Communion. It is a grace-filled opportunity to minister to our parish communities. Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion assist the priests at all weekday and weekend Masses and on Holy Days. Outside of Mass, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion may also assist in the distribution of the Eucharist to those who are homebound or in local nursing homes and hospitals. Necessary qualifications for Eucharistic Ministers are: be a practicing Catholic having received the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist and if married, the marriage must be a valid Catholic marriage. This ministry is a very special way to help nourish our Parish Community. Training is provided and scheduling is made around your needs. Those interested in this wonderful Ministry should contact Carol or Joan at the parish office.

PRAYER FOR HEALING VICTIMS OF ABUSE
Let us pray for Mercy today for victims and survivors,
that they may find some healing in the telling of their tragedies
and the affirmation of their courage. Let us pray for ourselves,

where the facade of trust lies dissolved in the tears of children,

WORLD DAY OF THE SICK ON FEBRUARY 11 The World Day of the Sick offers us an opportunity to draw particularly close to people who are ill, and to those who care for them. This was expressed by Pope Francis in his message for
this year's observance. The Holy Father noted: "Caring for the sick requires professionalism, tenderness, straightforward and simple gestures freely given, like a caress that makes others feel loved." The Diocese of Scranton will observe the 27th World Day of the Sick on Monday, February 11, 2019. Bishop Joseph C. Bambera will celebrate a Mass for the Sick at 12:10 p.m. in the Cathedral of Saint Peter, Scranton. During the Mass there will be a celebration of the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick for anyone acutely or chronically ill, anyone suffering a debilitating condition, anyone facing surgery, the elderly, and all who might be a candidate for this sacrament. All are welcome. CTV: Catholic Television will broadcast the Mass live.
