Our Town October 22–24, 7:30 p.m. October 25, 2:30 p.m. McGlothlin-Street Theatre, Gregory Center The college’s homecoming theatre production of Our Town features an all-star cast of students, faculty, staff, and alumni. This Pulitzer Prize-winning American classic by Thornton Wilder is suitable for the entire family and will touch the hearts and minds of all who see it. Directed by Professor of Theatre Richard Major and designed by Pamela Adolphi, the play features original music by alum Bradley Eastridge (’09). All seats are $5. Advance tickets go on sale October 1 at the Milligan Bookstore, 423.461.8733. A free matinee is scheduled October 23 at 10 a.m. For more information on the matinee, email [email protected].

Artist in Residence: Tim Hartman February 2–5The college’s theatre area welcomes Tim Hartman—an accomplished actor, storyteller, political cartoonist, music minister, and motivational speaker—to campus for a residency where he will be able to provide his extensive expertise. MUSICSenior Voice Recital: Laura MixonSeptember 19, 7:30 p.m. Mary B. Martin Auditorium, Seeger ChapelVocal performance major Laura Mixon presents a senior voice recital featuring works by Bernstein, Debussy, Schubert, Strauss, and more while portraying a delightful range of characters from a crazed diva to a love-sick young man. In addition to her vocal studies, Mixon has been active in the college’s theatre productions and a member of several ensembles including Concert Choir, Women’s Chorale, and Heritage. She was the 2014 recipient of the Milligan Outstanding Music Student Award.

Music Education Workshop: Clinician Dr. Maribeth Yoder-WhiteSeptember 26, 8:30 a.m.–1 p.m. Seeger ChapelThe fourth annual workshop for music educators will feature guest clinician Dr. Maribeth Yoder-White, president of the Southern Division of NAfME, as well as other distinguished music teachers including Leanna Baldwin and Jenny Rogers. Sessions will include “Choral Warm-Ups and What Works,” “Drumming: The Beat Goes On,” “Orff for Beginners and More,” and “Music & Integration = Sound Education.” Registration is $15 and includes refreshments and materials. Men in Song Choral Festival and ConcertOctober 3–4 Final concert: October 4, 4 p.m. Mary B. Martin Auditorium, Seeger ChapelMale singers of all ages are invited to a two-day choral festival led by Noah DeLong, assistant professor of music, along with colleagues from the ETSU choral area. The festival chorus will perform several pieces for the final concert, which is free and open to the public. Other featured performers include Heard Mentality, Milligan’s male a cappella group, as well as Appalachian Men’s Ensemble (AMEn), Appalachian Men’s Express, ETSU BucsWorth Men’s Choir, and MECCA Men. Registration is free for students of any level, $15 for adults (includes music and Saturday lunch).

Homecoming Concert: Celebrating Our Appalachian Roots October 24, 3:30 p.m. Mary B. Martin Auditorium, Seeger ChapelIn honor of the college’s 150th celebration, the music area will present a short, family-friendly concert that features the folk, bluegrass, and old-time music of the Appalachian region including such classics as “Buffalo Gals,” “Rocky Top,” “Orange Blossom Special,” and music from the hit movie O Brother, Where Art Thou? The concert will feature the Milligan Orchestra, Concert Choir, Women’s Chorale, Heritage, Heard Mentality, and Jazz Combo in addition to guest bluegrass musicians.

MUSIC Italian-themed offerings in its fall concert, “Viva Italia!” Presenting the fun-loving duet “Buffo Di Due Gatti” (“Humorous Duet for Two Cats”) by Rossini, music majors Laura Mixon, senior, and Riley Prickett, junior, are featured guest soloists with the orchestra. The second half of the concert features a large group of exceptional young violin students from the region performing music by Vivaldi.

Jazz Ensemble with Noel FreidlineNovember 23, 7:30 p.m. Mary B. Martin Auditorium, Seeger ChapelThe Milligan Jazz Ensemble, directed by Rick Simerly, associate professor of music, presents a fall concert featuring a variety of jazz as well as the vocal and piano talent of Noel Freidline, the former house pianist at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas who has appeared at jazz festivals throughout the world.

Jazz ComboDecember 3, 8 p.m. Sub7, McMahan Student Center Sub7 will take on a jazz club atmosphere when the Milligan Jazz Combo presents its fall concert. Small group arrangements and individual improvisations are the emphasis that evening, along with different genres of jazz performed in a variety of styles including swing, Latin, and rock. Even a jazz version of a familiar Christmas song will be included.

Christmas Concert December 5 and 6, 7:30 p.m. Mary B. Martin Auditorium, Seeger ChapelThe glorious sounds and sights of the season will be a great start to your Christmas festivities as the college’s music area presents its annual Christmas concert. The performance features choirs, orchestra, brass choir, and the organ in the beautifully decorated Mary B. Martin Auditorium inside Seeger Chapel. The evening also includes a carol sing-along and concludes with a moving candle-lighting and singing of “Silent Night.” The concert is free, but a suggested donation of $5 will be taken to benefit the college’s music program.

Johnson City Symphony Orchestra: Enlightened ExcursionsFebruary 6, 7:30 p.m. Mary B. Martin Auditorium, Seeger ChapelIn celebration of Milligan’s 150th anniversary, the symphony will feature the Milligan Orchestra and Concert Choir. The concert repertoire will include Mozart’s “Overture to Marriage of Figaro,” Haydn’s “Te Deum for Maria Theresa,” Bach’s “Brandenburg Concerto No. 3,” and Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 4 in B-flat Major.” Free admission for Milligan students, faculty, and staff. All others: Adults, $35; seniors, $30; and non-Milligan students, $10. For tickets, call 423.92.MUSIC.

Sweet Sounds Valentine Cabaret February 12, 7:30 p.m. Walker Auditorium, Seeger ChapelIn a festive candlelit atmosphere, this cabaret-style event will feature vocal and instrumental music in the Valentine theme of love and romance combined with a delicious dessert buffet. Tickets for table seating are $15 each. Overflow seating is $10. To purchase, call 423.461.8723. Any remaining tickets will be sold at the door.

Rucco-James Guitar DuoFebruary 21, 3 p.m. McGlothlin-Street Theatre, Gregory Center Internationally-renown guitar virtuosi Douglas James and Pasquale Rucco will present a recital of music from the period of Milligan’s founding, in honor of the college’s sesquicentennial. Combining a historically-informed approach with world-class musicianship, they play exclusively on authentic 19th century guitars, giving the music all the charm and nuance of the bel canto era. The duo has been performing together for over 20 years, delighting audiences throughout the world with their interpretations of music from the first true golden age of the guitar. This event is sponsored by the Milligan Arts Council.

Music For Lent, featuring Cecilia McDowall’s Stabat MaterMarch 19, 7 p.m. Mary B. Martin Auditorium, Seeger ChapelThe Milligan Concert Choir and Orchestra present a moving performance of Stabat Mater by contemporary British composer Cecilia McDowall featuring special guests the Civic Chorale and the East Tennessee Children’s Choir. This powerful work, which premiered in 2004, reflects on Mary’s sorrow as she witnessed the crucifixion of Jesus. The concert also will include individual performances by the three participating choirs and the orchestra. The concert is free for students. Tickets can be purchased for $10 at the door or the college’s bookstore, 423.461.8733.

Senior Project: Laura Mixon, Age Is Just A NumberApril 2, 7:30 p.m. Mary B. Martin Auditorium, Seeger ChapelIn the debut of her one-woman show, Milligan senior Laura Mixon will be portraying musical characters of all ages, from a precocious four-year-old to a wizened crone. Come enjoy an evening full of laughter and music. Mixon is a vocal performance major with a theatre minor.

Milligan Orchestra: An International Kaleidoscope April 16, 7:30 p.m. Mary B. Martin Auditorium, Seeger ChapelThe Milligan Orchestra, directed by Professor of Music Dr. Kellie Brown, will conclude its season with a spring concert celebrating the sounds and colors of music from around the world, including Japan, Egypt, and France. Guest artists include the Appalachian State University’s 35-member guitar orchestra performing works by Spanish and Italian composers. As a special 10-year celebration, “Genesis”—a work commissioned and premiered by the orchestra in 2006 from internationally renowned composer Kenton Coe— will have a special reprise performance.

Jazz Combo April 21, 9 p.m. Sub7, McMahan Student CenterThe Milligan Jazz Combo will present a spring concert highlighting songs especially selected for the sesquicentennial celebration. These songs will feature improvisational stylings of each combo member in the unique atmosphere of Sub7.

Spring Choral Concert: Great Is Thy FaithfulnessApril 22, 7:30 p.m. Mary B. Martin Auditorium, Seeger Chapel The Milligan Concert Choir and Women’s Chorale, under the direction of music faculty Noah DeLong and Anne Elliott, will share the stage to present a special sesquicentennial event. This concert will feature a diverse array of sacred music that celebrates God’s faithfulness to the college from its founding to the present day.

Jazz EnsembleApril 25, 7:30 p.m. Mary B. Martin Auditorium, Seeger ChapelApril is “Jazz Appreciation Month” and the Milligan Jazz Ensemble will celebrate with a spring concert. The event will feature a very special guest artist to be announced. Come join the ensemble for an evening of America’s music: jazz!

Barbershop to the Beatles: A Cappella Through The DecadesApril 30, 7:30 pm McGlothlin-Street Theatre, Gregory Center As Milligan looks back on its long history, the college’s a cappella groups will take listeners on a nostalgic journey of popular songs from decades past. The concert will feature performances by Heard Mentality, the college’s male a cappella ensemble, and Heritage, an ensemble of both men and women, as well as a finale by the combined groups.

Faculty Art Exhibition October 24, opening reception, 11 a.m. Milligan Art Gallery, Derthick HallThis unique exhibition will feature the works of Milligan faculty members Alice Anthony, Nick Blosser, and Art Brown—who have a combined 80 years experience making art. Anthony will show photographs of Elvis fans at Graceland, Blosser will exhibit paintings in watercolor and egg tempera, and Brown will showcase his printmaking work. The show runs October 24–November 20.

Art From The Buffalo SchoolFebruary 5, opening reception, 7–9 p.m. Nelson Fine Art Gallery, Johnson CityThroughout the month of February, an array of artwork from Milligan students will be on display at the Nelson Fine Art Center. The show, now in its 14th year, features student paintings, drawings, photography, mixed media, and graphic design.

Senior Art Exhibition: Harper SeveranceFebruary 28, opening reception, 2–4 p.m. Milligan Art Gallery, Derthick HallHarper Severance, who is from Jupiter, FL, will showcase her photography in a senior exhibition that runs from February 28–March 4.

Senior Art Exhibition: Abi BetheaMarch 20, opening reception, 2–4 p.m. Milligan Art Gallery, Derthick Hall Abi Bethea, who is from Eastanollee, GA, will showcase her photography in a senior exhibition that runs from March 20–March 25.

Poetry, Coffee, and Sweets with Friends: An Evening with Appalachian Writer Jane Hicks September 1, 7 p.m. Walker Auditorium, Seeger ChapelIn honor of Milligan’s upcoming 150th Anniversary, the Milligan Arts Council and the Women’s and Gender Studies program present an evening with nationally-acclaimed Appalachian writer and poet Jane Hicks. Her 2005 collection of poetry, Blood and Bone Remember, won the Poetry Book of the Year 2006 Award from the Appalachian Writers Association. Her latest poetry collection, Driving with the Dead, was published in 2014. Enjoy an evening sitting around tables with coffee and dessert listening to beautiful readings, wise anecdotes, and the wry humor of a master storyteller. Books for purchasing and a signing will be available after the event.

Buffalo Tales with the Jonesborough Storytellers GuildSeptember 12, 7 p.m. McGlothlin-Street Theatre, Gregory CenterAn evening of storytelling with members of the Jonesborough Storytellers Guild and Milligan Professor of Communication Bruce Montgomery. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students at the door. Proceeds will defray costs of the storytelling class for students.

Faculty Lecture Series: Archaeological Adventures in the Middle EastSeptember 15, 7 p.m. Hyder Auditorium, Science BuildingJohn Mark Wade, theological librarian and assistant director of library services, will deliver a lecture, “This Will Change Your Life!” (some dusty archaeological adventures in the Middle East).” Wade will share his archaeological research in Jordan covering the Biblical Moabites from the 8th and 7th century B.C. in the days of prophets Isaiah, Amos, Micah, Hosea, and King Hezekiah.

Ross-Smith Lectures in Pastoral Care: Dr. Stephen Loyd October 13 and 15, 11 a.m. Emmanuel Christian Seminary Chapel, B.D. Phillips Building In its third year, the Ross-Smith Lectures in Pastoral Care will feature Dr. Stephen Loyd, MD, associate professor of medicine at ETSU’s Quillen College of Medicine, who will host a panel discussion with members of the medical community on addictive disease. Another lecture will be held on October 14 at 6 p.m. in ETSU’s Votaw Auditorium, 325 N. State of Franklin Rd. Johnson City, TN. In 2013, Dr. Calvin and Nancy Ross endowed the lectures in memory of Calvin’s parents, Walter and Mardel Ross, and beginning this year, in honor of Nancy’s father, Frank S. Smith.

Dance Through The Ages October 23, 8–10 p.m. Mary Sword CommonsThe Milligan Student Government Association in conjunction with the Student Life Sesquicentennial Committee, present a homecoming dance of the decades, a celebration of dance styles past and present. Francis Gary Powers, Jr.: The U-2 IncidentOctober 24, 4:30 p.m. Hyder Auditorium, Science BuildingFrancis Gary Powers, Jr., son of the U-2 pilot and Milligan alumnus shot down over the former Soviet Union 55 years ago, will share his father’s remarkable story. A movie about the incident, Bridge of Spies, was released on October 16 and directed by Steven Spielberg, starring Tom Hanks.

Faculty Lecture Series: Interstate Migration in Response to Social LiberalizationsOctober 27, 7 p.m. Hyder Auditorium, Science BuildingMilligan’s Dr. David Campbell, associate professor of economics and director of the college’s MBA program, will give a lecture, “Interstate Migration in Response to Social Liberalizations: Same Sex Unions and Marijuana.” Campbell examined 50 states over the period 2005 through 2011 and is able to estimate the significance state policies have on interstate migration.

Faith and TechnologyConvocation: November 10, 11 a.m. Chapel: November 12, 11 a.m. Mary B. Martin Auditorium, Seeger Chapel Nationally-renowned speaker Doreen Dodgen-Magee, a licensed psychologist from Portland, OR, will come to Milligan to discuss the intersection of faith and technology.

8th Annual Buffalo TalesDecember 3, 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. McGlothlin-Street Theatre, Gregory Center An evening of storytelling featuring Milligan storytelling students as part of their fall semester final exam.

Sesquicentennial Spirit WeekFebruary 15–19Food, clothing, music, and hairstyles have changed a lot over the college’s 150 years. This fun-filled week for Milligan students honors those changes and celebrates the spirit that is at the heart of Milligan College. Campbell Ladies Conference with Liz Curtis HiggsFebruary 20, 8:30 a.m.–3 p.m. Milligan College CampusLiz Curtis Higgs is the author of more than 30 books with 4.5 million copies in print, including her nonfiction bestsellers Bad Girls of the Bible, The Girl’s Still Got It, and The Women of Christmas, as well as Scottish historical novels Here Burns My Candle and Mine Is the Night, a New York Times bestseller. Higgs also has presented more than 1,700 inspirational programs in the United States and abroad.

Chapel Guest Speaker: Jennifer Pharr DavisFebruary 25, 11 a.m. Mary B. Martin Auditorium, Seeger ChapelJennifer Pharr Davis is the owner and founder of Blue Ridge Hiking Company in Asheville, NC. In 2011, she became the first woman to set the Overall Appalachian Trail Record, completing the 2181-mile trek in just 46 days and averaging nearly 47 miles per day. This accomplishment was voted Ultrarunning Magazine’s Female Performance of 2011 and earned Davis recognition as a 2012 National Geographic Adventurer of the Year. Her latest book, Called Again, chronicles this remarkable journey, and her adventures have been featured in The New York Times and The Washington Post and on NPR’s Talk of the Nation, CNN, and the CBS Early Show.

The Henry and Emerald Webb Lecture Series: Doug FosterMarch 1 and 3, 11 a.m. Mary B. Martin Auditorium, Seeger ChapelThe college’s annual Webb Lecture Series welcomes Doug Foster, professor of church history and director of the Center for Restoration Studies at Abilene Christian University. He holds a PhD from Vanderbilt University and has published extensively on the Stone-Campbell movement.

Faculty Lecture Series: Dr. Ted ThomasApril 19, 7 p.m. Hyder Auditorium, Science BuildingDr. Ted Thomas, professor of humanities, history and German, will share the results of his semester abroad researching Pastor Hermann Maas who helped rescue German Jews during WWII.
