What is a fable? A short story, typically with animals as characters,

conveying a moral. Also known as a tale, parable or allegory. Aesop’s Fables

What is a nursery rhyme? A simple traditional song or poem for children.

What is a fairy tale? A children's story about magical and imaginary

beings and lands Also called a myth, legend or fantasy.

Were printed in England as early as the 1570’s.The first important nursery rhyme dates back to the 14th century (1300’s).

What is the history of nursery rhymes?The words and lyrics were used to parody royal and political events, actual historical events and the culture of the day.

Used to spread subversive messages.

Buns were sold on street corners – this rhyme mimics what the vendor would say to get a sale.

The cross on the buns is a symbol of the Resurrection and they are generally only sold at Easter time.

Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall,

Humpty Dumpty had a great fall.

All the King's horses, And all the King's men

Couldn't put Humpty together again!

HUMPTY DUMPTY

In the 15th century (1400’s) “Humpty Dumpty” was a term for someone who is obese.

So who was “Humpty Dumpty”?Believe it or not, “Humpty Dumpty” was a cannon used during the English Civil War (1642-1649)!!!

Think of a recent/current political event.I will help brainstorm (for 5 minutes).

Write down (free write) terms and ideas regarding the event – you will have 5 minutes.

Create a nursery rhyme that children will read and be able to understand what is happening in the political event. (Requirements on next slide).

NURSERY RHYME ASSIGNMENT

Requirements:Must rhyme (otherwise it’s not a nursery rhyme, is it?)

Have a least 4 linesThe political event must be recognizable but do not specifically mention.

Trade with the person to your left – read the nursery rhyme and determine the political event clues in the rhyme. Write your guess on a piece of paper and attach to nursery rhyme.

Turn into your bin – handwritten assignments will be fine today! Don’t forget your name and period.
