Darren Phelps Co-Principal Co-Principal’s message: Hello everyone. Once again June has snuck up on us and hails the end of another school year. With the turning of the season comes many changes here at FHS. Firstly we have a number of staffing changes for next year. Mr. Frey will be retiring at the end of this school year. He has taught for 37 years with the last 16 here in Fairview. He has also been the vice principal of FHS from

1999 to 2007, and most recently he has served in the career counselling position. He will be deeply missed and we wish him and his wife well in their next adventures. Miss. Maguire is leaving her position as the youth educational support worker at our school for other career opportunities. We will miss her contribution to the culture of the school as well. Andy and Carla Ganter are concluding their contract janitorial positions here as well at the end of the summer. They have been with Peace River School Division for 23 years at a number of schools and at FHS for the past 9 years. Thank you both for keeping the school and grounds clean and safe for staff and students alike. Mrs. Rarick’s return next year will mean the end of Mrs. Avignon’s time with us as a financial secretary. We very much appreciated her contribution to the smooth operation of the financial side of the school. One of our educational assistants, Kelly Alexander, will also not be returning in the fall. Thank you for your work with students this year Kelly. You helped to make a difference in student’s learning. Mr. Sheets is returning to Peace River High School to resume his vice principal position for the next school year. He has been a real asset to the school and will be missed. We wish him luck and hope he comes to visit often. Mr. Phelps will also be returning to the vice principal position here next year. FHS would like to welcome Dave Hamlyn from Grand Falls-Windsor NFLD as our new 2015-2016 principal. Dave has served in principal or vice principal roles for about 27 years in communities of comparable size to Fairview and schools of similar size and will make a great addition at FHS. More info will come in September. It has been our pleasure to serve the Fairview High School community as co-principals this semester and we wish everyone success in their final exams, Provincial Achievement Tests, and Diploma Exams in the final weeks. Have a safe, relaxing summer with friends and family, and we hope to see you in the fall ready to take on the challenges of the next level in your schooling.

Jordan Scobie, FHS grade 11 student, was deeply affected by the Nepal Earthquake disaster and then took it upon himself to fundraise $1200 for a shelter box. Jordan approached the Students Union about having a dance where all proceeds from the dance, and student donations would go towards the shelter box. Mrs. Szmata’s Leadership class also donated the proceeds from their three fundraisers, a bake sale, ice cream sundae sale and Freezie Friday’s to Jordan’s cause.

Great job Jordan!

Accountability Pillar Survey Results

Page 5: Fairview High School is a learning community that ... · Grad Class Graduation 2015 was a successful event !! Many thanks to the following: Our Grade 12 graduates for your enthusiasm

Fairview High is pleased with its most recent accountability pillar survey results. We have shown improvements in eight areas including: work preparation, student citizenship, Rutherford scholarship eligibility, diploma participation, diploma acceptable, diploma excellence, parental involvement, and overall school improvement. We celebrate our improved results with students, parents, and staff High School Redesign at Fairview High. Fairview High is moving forward with High School Redesign (HSR) in the 2015-2016 school year. What is High School Redesign? Redesigning high school focuses on research and 'best practice' thinking-where schools have implemented strategies and approaches aimed at transforming the high-school experience for students and teachers through changes to school structure, culture, educational practices or leadership. Moving Forward with High School Redesign main site: https://ideas.education.alberta.ca/hsc/redesigning/movinfw/

Areas of Focus at FHS? High School Redesign currently has nine foundational principles that guide it. Fairview High will be looking at two of these next year: Area of focus #1: Meaningful Relationships

Area of focus #2: Flexible Learning Environments

Why Focus on Meaningful Relationships and Flexible Learning Environments? We have analyzed several sources of data and research that suggest learning opportunities can improve when students have access to flexible learning times and are working in an environment where they have established meaningful relationships. By creating a new, more flexible, bell schedule students will have access to learning opportunities that can better meet their individual needs. Creating new opportunities for students to establish strong peer and staff relationships will increase their sense of belonging in the school. This can lead to decreases in levels of anxiety and increases in the number of students graduating from high school. We are intentionally working to create a culture of educational excellence and high school redesign will support us in this endeavour. What does this look like for students next year? The Junior and Senior High’s will be running on the same bell schedule. Junior High’s will be in multi-graded (7-9) groupings for TEAM time and Senior High’s will be as well (10-12). TEAM (Together for Educational Advocacy and Mentorship) time will involve an opportunity for students to check in with their TEAM teacher to help them assess their goals and plans for the semester. This time will also teach students how to use MyBlueprint which is an organizational tool that can help students high school plan, post-secondary plan, career plan, set goals, budget and develop a personal portfolio. TEAM time will also help us to build a greater sense of belonging and school spirit with our students. We will be developing the TEAM program in the coming months. PULSE (People Using Learning Supports Everywhere) time will look different for Jr. and Sr. High. In Jr. High these will be set classes that students attend. For Sr. High there is more flexibility with PULSE time. The concept is that students will have a weekly schedule showing options for PULSE time. Sometimes these PULSE times will be mandatory, other times students will have choice. Students make their selections, then attend the PULSE time that will meet their learning needs. Some of the PULSE will be interest based and others will be specific to their subject are-as. Attendance will be taken in the PULSE and TEAM times. It is not an optional time. All full time students are expected to be somewhere during these times, this just gives students more choice in how they use their time. Part time students will only attend PULSE times that apply to their schedules.

Frequently Asked Questions in Senior High: Why does lunch hour have to change each day? We have PULSE times in the morning and afternoon so that each block of instructional time is paired with a PULSE time. This allows for classes to be extended if there is need for time to do something like a lab, presentation, or field trip. The changing PULSE times also allow for all students, whether part-time or full-time, to have access to the flexible learning opportunities that will be occurring during PULSE times. Will we still have spares? Grade 11 and 12 students may still have spares in their schedules depending on their academic course load. We encourage all students to take advantage of the many learning opportunities that are available to them during the school day. Is attendance taken in PULSE and TEAM times? Yes attendance is taken in these times, they are not spares but mandatory instructional time with curricular outcomes. Do I get to choose my TEAM teacher and group? We will be working with students to collect information that will help us figure out who their TEAM teacher should be. How do I find out what is available in PULSE times? As the program rolls out, we will be creating a weekly PULSE time schedule that students can view online or in the hallway. It will have selections for our senior high students only. How do I sign-up for what I want to do in PULSE times? Students will sign-up online each week using Google Forms. We will be training students on this process as part of our TEAM time in the fall. Who will be able to access MyBlueprint software? Students will be working with the MyBlueprint software in their TEAM groups. Each student will develop a profile unique to them. They will take advantage of the many tools in the software to help them plan and set goals for their future. Once students have set up accounts with their TEAM teacher, parents will be able to link to their child’s account(s) in order to view their progress. Check out the “how it works” section on http://myblueprint.ca/ for an introductory video. More information on this will be distributed in the fall.

THANK YOU— The 2014-2015 school year is nearing completion and it is my absolute pleasure to thank you all for your important contributions over the past year. Thank you to our students for your dedication, enthusiasm and creativity. It brings an incredible sense of pride to reflect upon the countless examples of collective and personal accomplishment, growth, school and community spirit, kindness and leadership. The positive impact you make in your school, community and society as a whole is further reaching than you know. To our graduates, congratulations on reaching this important milestone and best wishes in all your future endeavours. Remember that no

dream is too big and to live your life to its fullest potential. Thank you to our parents for your support and involvement. We realise, value and appreciate the important role you play in your child’s education. Parental involvement looks different for every family and we thank you for all that you do. Whether you help your child with homework, volunteer at the school, attend events, participate in parent teacher conferences, are a member of School Council, keep in contact with school staff or help your child with career planning - your contributions make a difference. We look forward to celebrating you again in November 2015 during PARENTS MATTER Appreciation Week. Thank you to our staff – teachers, caretakers, support staff, educational assistants, learning coaches, bus drivers, maintenance personnel, mechanics and central office staff- every role makes a difference and contributes to student success. Thank you for your part in supporting one and other especially during this exciting time of educational transformation. Recently, our May 2015 Accountability Pillar Results (APR) Report was published by Alberta Education. We are very pleased to report that PRSD has experienced an increased rating of “improved significantly” or “improved” in seven of twelve measures and have maintained progress in the remaining five measures on the report. The APR is PRSD’s “report card” provided by Alberta Education and is based on educational scores and survey data collected from students, staff and parents. Our continued growth is a result of the collective contributions of our school community. In PRSD, we truly are Inspiring Education and it is because of the important work you all do. Thank you for your support and guidance as we provide our students with opportunities that allow them to shine as ethical citizens, engaged thinkers with entrepreneurial spirits – better prepared for the world today. To our community members and organizations, we are very grateful for your involvement and participation in our schools. Your involvement demonstrates the importance of community and teamwork for our students. We are very thankful for your time spent volunteering, providing input, collaborating and forming partnerships throughout our school division that brings increased opportunities for students. Students, staff, parents, community members and businesses, you are all an important part of the Peace River School Division family. Thank you for your contributions that make our schools the great places they are to learn, grow, work and be. Wishing you a fantastic summer! A Bite of Health Making the Healthy Choice the Easy Choice

Alive, Awake, Alert! Tired children are more

likely to watch television, eat more

snacks and eat less healthy foods.

Tired children may not want to be physically active or play with their friends. A lack of

activity may lead to poor academic

performance as well as unhealthy behaviours.

Lack of sleep among children can affect

their mood, memory and ability to pay attention.

Youth aged 12-18 years old need 9-10 hours of sleep every night. It is important to make sure that they are getting enough sleep during the busy week because sleep is the best medicine to cure the feeling of tiredness!

Did you know?

Stress can affect sleep. Physical activity helps to

keep our stress levels down. Make sure your child is getting 60 minutes of physical

activity each day. If you try to do the same

thing every evening before bed it can help you to

get settled and to fall asleep sooner.

Some people like to read a book or take a bath

before bed every night to help them relax. What is your bedtime routine?

Did you know that 71% of

all 8 to 18 year-olds have a TV, 50% have a video game player and 36% have a computer in their bedroom?

Having media in the bedroom can have a strong effect on a child’s sleep.

Healthy Bedtime Snack! Plan a bedtime snack 45 minutes to 1 hour before bedtime, keep the snack small and only give children a snack if they are hungry, not out of habit. Next time your child is looking for a bedtime snack, try one of these suggestions:

100% whole grain crackers and cheese

Peanut butter and fruit sandwich. Try strawberries,

bananas or apples! Cottage cheese with

fruit.

Children with at least one form of technology in their bedroom

are at a much greater risk to stay up past their bedtimes and

late into the night. Studies have shown that nearly

half of heavy media users report getting fair or poor

grades, compared to only 23% of light media users.

Stay Positive

HOW STAYING POSITIVE HELPS

It's likely our species survived because of our knack for detecting danger. But our worry-filled thoughts can present

dangers of their own: Thinking negatively can drag down our moods, our actions and even our health.

WAYS TO STAY POSITIVE

Foster Optimism

Trying to be optimistic doesn't mean ignoring the uglier sides of life. It just means focusing on the positive as much as

possible-and it gets easier with practice.

If you want to pump up your optimism, you might:

Write about a positive future. The idea is to envision your goals and dreams come true. Tips include:

o Write about your great future life. Writing helps you absorb ideas better than just thinking.

o A variation on this exercise is to imagine positive outcomes in a particularly challenging situation.

Search for the silver lining. Looking for the positive in a negative situation may sound sappy, but it can actually

show great strength. To find your silver lining, ask yourself:

o How have I grown from this situation?

o Are my relationships stronger now?

o Have I developed new skills?

o What am I proud of about the way I handled this situation?

Practice Gratitude

Noticing and appreciating the positives in our lives offers a great mood boost.

To increase your gratefulness, you can:

Write a gratitude letter.

Keep a gratitude journal. Write down anything large or small that makes you smile.

Page 16: Fairview High School is a learning community that ... · Grad Class Graduation 2015 was a successful event !! Many thanks to the following: Our Grade 12 graduates for your enthusiasm

Write a gratitude letter.

Keep a gratitude journal. Write down anything large or small that makes you smile.

Remind yourself to savor. Yes, stop and smell the roses-and look at them and touch them. Do whatever you can to

really soak in the lovelier aspects of your life.

Share your good news.

Avoid Negative Thinking

If you want to feel positive, it pays to decrease the downers in your life. With practice, you can resist worrisome thoughts

and perhaps even transform your internal critic into more of a cheering squad.

Avoid dwelling on downers. Focusing on negatives isn't just unpleasant; it also can make you less effective in

tackling tasks you faceTo stifle your obsessing:

o Ask yourself if the issue is really worth your energy. Will this issue matter in a year, for example?

o Tell yourself you'll worry about it at a specific time later. Chances are you'll feel better by the appointed time.

o Instead of just spinning your worry wheels, try a concrete problem-solving exercise.

o Distract yourself: Go to a movie, pump up some music, and find something fun to do.

Change unhealthy self-talk. You may have been running negative messages in your head for a long time.

Ask yourself if your negative thought is really true.

Remember any achievements that disprove your insecurity.

Imagine what you'd tell a friend if he was worrying in ways that you are. You'd likely convince him to wait a bit

before assuming the worst.

Beware of all-or-nothing thinking. Disappointing your girlfriend once doesn't mean you're doomed to disappoint her

all the time.

Consider alternative explanations.
