Pre-Diabetes ClassThis one-time class is for those with pre-diabetes or at high risk for developing diabetes. You will learn to: choose foods to help improve health, incorporate physical activity into your lifestyle, interpret food labels, and get started with a plan to help manage weight. A support person is welcome to attend with you. Cost is $30 and covers written materials and a pedometer. Some insurance plans may reimburse class cost.

Tai Chi exercise ProgramThis program is specially designed for survivors of stroke, cardiac surgeries or cardiac events, It uses slow, rhythmic movements done in a variety of postures to improve balance, relaxation and concentration. It is not an aerobic form of exercise and can be done seated. Introductory and beginner classes held fall and spring. Cost is $4 per session or $32 for an eight-session card. The first class is free.

adaptive yoga for MSYoga improves balance, coordination and flexibility while reducing stress. This six-week class for people with MS introduces basic poses. If you have concerns about your ability to perform yoga safely, consult a physician before registering. An MS-certified specialist provides individualized adaptations if needed. Cost is $10 per class or $50 for all six classes. Priority is given to people registering for all six classes.

Learn to help your body fight the side effects of cancer treatments and possibly reduce your need for some medications. This program can help with weight, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, eating disorders, food allergies, digestive problems, kidney problems and diabetes. PreferredOne insurance may cover five nutrition visits per year for certain conditions, including obesity (BMI>30), diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and more. Pulmonary rehabilitation This program is designed for people with obstructive and restrictive lung disease including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), emphysema, pulmonary fibrosis, asthma, and lung transplant. Weight Management exercise ProgramThis exercise program focuses on individuals who are overweight. The initial evaluation includes electrocardiogramy (eCG), blood pressure and oxygen saturation monitoring, along with a six-minute walk evaluation. This information helps in developing individualized exercise instruction and goal setting. Group sessions follow, which include aerobic exercise on a variety of stationary machines, strength training and stretching. A physician referral is required.

Grief and Loss Group — university of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview – West Bank This on-going, open-ended group is for men and women having difficulty with pain and sadness from grief for the loss of a loved one. Group interaction, education and support are combined to help individuals manage their grief. Objectives are to improve daily functioning, develop and use coping skills, give and receive support.
From Pain to Pen to Promise — edinaIn this 12-week therapy group for adult women, participants will learn how extreme stress and trauma affects the mind, body, emotions and spirit. They will learn how experiencing extremely stressful or traumatic events and lifestyles can cause people to get stuck in self-limiting and self-defeating behaviors. The group will also learn how to begin or continue the process of healing. Participants will practice several different journaling techniques. Journaling is a research-based tool that is effective in reducing symptoms and working through painful and traumatic events and memories. No special talent or skill is needed.
relapse Prevention Group — university of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview – West BankThis is an on-going therapy/relapse prevention group for men and women experiencing depression and whose depression includes psychotic features. The group is appropriate for the following diagnoses: depression with psychosis; schizoeffective; or bipolar with psychotic features. The objectives are to improve personal daily functioning, develop and use effective coping skills, and to give and receive support.
relapse Prevention Group for Depression and anxiety — edinaThis on-going therapy/relapse prevention group is for men and women to provide skill development. The group also provides support and reinforces the therapy gains made by clients who have had more than one episode of depression or anxiety, and who are ready to decrease frequency and intensity of treatment to two times a month.

The group will help individuals manage their emotions, develop coping skills and improve daily functioning so that they can bring 100 percent of themselves to their relationships. The group also will help participants develop personal goals, assess progress and encourage commitment to personal and relational growth. This group is appropriate for partners or other relationships experiencing anxiety and depression due to life changes such as unemployment, financial issues, infidelity, separation, blended families, birth or death of loved ones and other life stressors.
Therapy Group for Depression and anxiety During and after Pregnancy — Maple Grove and university of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview – West Bank This on-going group is for women experiencing depression and anxiety associated with their pregnancies. Sessions will include education and treatment, spouse/partner involvement, support from other mothers and coordination with medical behavioral health care team. Babies may accompany mother if needed.
young adult Therapy Group — university of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview – West BankThis therapy/support group provides skill development and support through the transition from adolescence to adulthood. It will focus on the pros and cons of autonomy/independence and managing this effectively. The group will review the identification and management of mental health symptoms that may arise as a result of this transition. This study will examine proteins in the blood to see how they relate to psychosis. This is not a medication trial. Beyond the Basics of BreastfeedingWhile breastfeeding is natural, it is still an art, and needs skill and practice. Be sure to attend a prenatal breastfeeding class to learn ways to make breastfeeding easy and enjoyable for you and your baby. This class is offered by a lactation consultant from Fairview Northland Medical Center. It includes the basics of breastfeeding, and goes more in depth into common problems and solutions, pumping and storing, and weaning. Fathers are encouraged to join this class to learn how to be more supportive of the breastfeeding mother. Class limit eight couples.
Childbirth PreparationThis four-week series of classes is designed for the couple, or a birthing coach and mother, from 26 weeks through 36 weeks of pregnancy. The series includes the basics of breast and bottle feeding. A physician and/or Labor & Delivery nurse attends one class for a question-and-answer session. A tour of The Birthplace will be offered during each class series. Wear comfortable clothing. Classes limit 10 couples.
Childbirth Preparation expressThis class is for expectant parents in the last three months of pregnancy who cannot fit a four-week series into their schedules. Chair yoga for Chronic Health Conditionsresearch has shown that yoga can provide an increased sense of empowerment and the ability to better perform the activities of daily living. Therapeutic chair yoga can provide many benefits for chronic health conditions such as cancer, osteoarthritis, diabetes, anxiety, depression, fibromyalgia, hypertension, MS, COPD, rheumatoid arthritis, GerD, and chronic back pain just to name a few. Join us for this class which will include a gentle movement practice, relaxation techniques and breathing practices to help to reduce symptoms, improve sleep, increase energy, restore balance and improve your attitude and overall quality of life. The class will be personalized to the needs of the participants. We will do yoga poses sitting in a chair and standing using a chair for balance.

yoga for Type II Diabetes Studies show that yoga-based therapy for type II diabetes can reduce fasting blood sugar, hemoglobin A1C and medication dosage. In this class, you will learn simple yoga practices to lower stress hormones which elevate blood sugar, heart rate, blood pressure and LDL cholesterol. You'll learn healthier food choices and practice mindful eating to get more enjoyment from the food that you eat. This class also is helpful for people who are pre-diabetic and want to prevent the onset of type II diabetes.

Phase II Cardiac rehabilitation This program is for individuals with recent heart-related diagnoses. Continuous eCG, heart rate and blood pressure monitoring during exercise sessions provide the basis for learning the principles of an individualized, safe fitness program of conditioning, strengthening and flexibility. Lifestyle modification education for coronary artery disease risk reduction is also provided. Physician referral/insurance provider approval required.

Phase IV Cardiac rehabilitation This program is for people who completed Phase II Cardiac rehabilitation and want to maintain heart fitness. expectant Parent(s) Classes This series is a four-week session designed for first-time parents and coaches. Lectures, handouts and videos are used to cover a variety of topics. Cost is $30 per couple, scholarships are available.
First Steps to Parenting This prenatal parenting class is a two-session class teaching practical information on parenting a newborn and making important decisions. No fee.
Moms on Bed rest This service is provided on an as-needed basis for the expectant mother who is on bed rest and is unable to attend hospital-based prenatal classes. No fee.
BirtH and FaMily eDucatioNrefresher Prenatal This one-night class is designed for parents and coaches who have experienced a previous birth. A variety of topics are discussed and a tour of Fairview’s Women’s Health and Birth Center is provided. Cost is $10 per couple (scholarships are available). Parents unable to attend the refresher Prenatal Class, but who would like to review what to expect during labor and delivery, may obtain just the educational materials for a fee of $5.
Sibling-To-Be Tour A visit to the Women’s Health and Birth Center will help your other children prepare for the arrival of a new baby brother or sister. Children can bring a favorite doll or stuffed animal to pretend holding and changing a new baby. They will see a room like the one mom and the baby will be in during the hospital stay. This tour is geared for pre-schoolers and young school-age children. Try to tour one month before the baby is due to be born. No fee.
