A Successful Refit for the 68m Lürssen, Global

In conjunction with Hill Robinson International Ltd., Lürssen recently completed the refit of M/Y Global at their facility in Rendsburg, Germany. A 68 meter Lürssen initially launched as Kismet in 2007, the most visible change is the ship’s beautiful new hull color; a subtle gray Alexseal topcoat.

Lürssen Yachts is well known internationally as a builder of

stunning, cutting-edge super yachts that push the envelope on speed, luxury and most notably, their epic scale. Lürssen currently holds the record for delivering the largest private yacht, Azzam, measuring in at 180 meters (590 feet). Receiving so much praise for their new

builds, it may be easy to forget the company performs amazing refit

projects as well. With over 135

years of shipbuilding expertise, Lürssen is family owned and operates seven facilities throughout their home country of Germany.

2014 ushers in a landmark year for ALEXSEAL® Yacht Coatings, as the brand celebrates its tenth anniversary since entering the yacht coatings market. ALEXSEAL’s success is due not only to its unique formulations designed specifically for the marine environment but also to the people behind the brand who ensure that the highest quality products are provided with the best technical support available. This support and dedication gave rise to ALEXSEAL’s “Decade of Innovation” – ten years of superior products designed to apply easier, perform better and provide consistency year over year – all backed by the best technical and customer support in the industry.

The developers of ALEXSEAL® were the visionaries who decades ago first introduced aliphatic polyester polyurethanes from the aerospace industry to the marine market. They created the trade of urethane application. After all, Mankiewicz has been producing the highest quality coatings for over 100 years and every ALEXSEAL product benefits from this experience and dedication to quality.

Now, ten years after our system’s introduction, we are proud to say that ALEXSEAL covers some of the largest privately owned yachts in the world on down to some of the smallest canoes, and every size in between. Stay tuned for the next 10 years as we set off on our second “Decade of Innovation.”

and managing the refit. Espen Oeino was commissioned to draw the new hull lines, maintaining the DNA of the original design, and the owner has been delighted with the results. The hull was given a stunning new Alexseal light gray color with tremendous shine, effectively giving the superyacht a new lease on life which has been described as a great credit to Lürssen’s refit team and the

contractors who undertook the work. The yacht also has been given a complete helicopter deck and major changes to the interior in accordance with the new owner’s taste and specifications, as well as a full system upgrade on audio, video and IT systems on the yacht.

Global’s refit was completed in time to begin the summer cruising season on

the Mediterranean with her owners, and was spotted reflecting Gibraltar’s cobalt waters just a few days after leaving the shipyard. Alexseal is proud to have played such a major role in this luxury yacht’s new look, as well as our continued partnership with Lürssen’s world-class construction and refit teams.

Colori Roggero Beautifying Mediterranean Yachts of All Types

Colori Roggero of Imperia, Italy has been in the coatings business for sixty years and has helped supply ALEXSEAL® for some of the region’s largest ship refits and launches in recent years. Working closely with Italian shipyards such as Cantiere delle Marche and Cantieri Navali di Sestri, as well as renowned German sailing yacht manufacturer Hanse Yachts and W-Magic Shipyard of Tunisia, Colori Roggero has supplied ALEXSEAL coatings systems for a diverse array of interesting boats. From the custom

metallic blue on the new Hanse 575 to the re-fairing, priming and painting of Wallanka, a classic 1963 Aberdeen-built motoryacht, the Colori Roggero staff have proven they can capably supply a host of demanding projects. ALEXSEAL management and Italian sales representative Corrado Sallustio are excited to have such a quality partner

Cantiere delle Marche Enjoys ALEXSEAL’s Quality

Italian shipyard Cantiere delle Marche has been building unique and custom large motoryachts for many years, and has now integrated the ALEXSEAL® coatings system into their operations. Initial applications of ALEXSEAL products were performed in the shipyard by applicators under the technical support guidance of ALEXSEAL’s Dirk Ehmke. With great success on the initial tests, the decision to apply ALEXSEAL to immediate projects throughout the shipyard was an easy choice.

The first hull to be sprayed was a dark grey 86’ Darwin Class Explorer Yacht designed by Hydro Tec and Sergio Cutolo. Several more yachts recently launched at Cantiere delle Marche were also finished in ALEXSEAL coatings, including M/Y YOLO – the 86’ yacht that is the first to launch from the new Nauta Air class. This line is distinguished by their aluminum construction and different approach to design and amenities that allow for the greatest interior volume while also achieving a unique style. Also destined to launch in ALEXSEAL paint is a larger, 90’ motoryacht from the Nauta Air

class. Darren Burr, CdM’s Yacht Painting Contractor and Coatings Applicator finds it a relief to be using polyurethane based paints again after using acrylic paints at the yard for several years. Burr explains his experiences with ALEXSEAL, “I found the 501 Topcoat to be similar to competing polyurethane products, but in my opinion, much better because it can be applied thicker, and it is possible to sand or buff any imperfections, which makes a big difference over the competition.” Burr’s overall experiences with ALEXSEAL coatings at the CdM yard have been very good, and he looks forward to the continued use of the ALEXSEAL system.

Not just a builder of esteemed motoryachts, Cantiere delle Marche traces their roots from the construction and support of a wide range of different vessels including tankers, high-tech merchant ships and passenger vessels, along with the world’s most prestigious cruise ships. ALEXSEAL is excited to have the opportunity to partner with such an amazing and well-focused ship builder for all of their fairing and coatings needs!

An Elegant Refinish for Superyacht Zenobia

Zenobia, originally built by Abeking & Rasmussen in 2003, has been described as majestic, elegant and even invigorating in design and amenities. This amazing 57 meter (187 feet) yacht bears the appropriately fitting name of a 3rd century Syrian Queen who led a revolt against the Roman Empire – Zenobia exudes beauty and elegance, along with enduring strength of design and construction. This superyacht has recently spent time in the highly capable hands of Rolling Stock Finishing and Refinishing. At

the company’s Toulon, France facilitiy, Zenobia received a comprehensive ALEXSEAL® paint application providing her with years of lasting protection and beauty wherever her travels may take her.

Recognized throughout the world for their breathtaking superyacht designs, German-based builder Abeking & Rasmussen has constructed nearly every variety of sea-going vessel imaginable since 1907. With a steel hull and aluminum superstructure, Zenobia provided an

exceptional opportunity for ALEXSEAL to showcase our systems specifically formulated for the marine market. Combined with Rolling Stock’s entrenched understanding of ALEXSEAL’s primers, fillers, and surfacing products formulated to optimize the results of the topcoat, Zenobia now stands as a quintessential flagship of style and performance.

The highly regarded team at Rolling Stock has been providing finishing, chandlery and rigging services in the yachting industry for 25 years. Taking pride in every task they are challenged with, Rolling Stock has become a go-to service stop for luxury yachts traveling throughout Europe and a highly valued partner with ALEXSEAL over the past decade. Rolling Stock’s work on Zenobia is just one more example of a stunning finish, applied by capable hands on an impressively designed superyacht.

Another Great Finish for S/V Carina

Regarded as a perennial favorite in the esteemed Newport to Bermuda Race and other prestigious sailing regattas, Carina has developed a strong reputation as one of the winningest mid-sized yachts in modern sailing, and was recently restored with ALEXSEAL® topcoat.

Owned by Rives Potts, Rear Commodore of the New York Yacht Club and President of Brewer Yacht Yards, Carina is a 40 year old aluminum yacht with classic lines and a winning pedigree. The 48’ sloop has now participated in the Newport to Bermuda Race a record 21 times and has won the race on three occasions, the first in 1970 under skipper Richard S. Nye and under Potts in 2010 & 2012 in the St. David’s Lighthouse Division. Carina has also completed the Transatlantic Race, Fastnet Race and the Sydney/Hobart Race; circumnavigating the globe on her own bottom to do so.

When Potts decided to renew Carina’s topcoat prior to the 2014 racing season, his colleagues at Brewer Pilots Point Marina in Westbrook, Connecticut teamed up with Alastair Smith of ALEXSEAL to ensure they achieved the world-class finish this classic yacht so rightfully deserves. Her new Super Jet Black topcoat provides a high gloss finish that emphasizes the top craftsmanship of her initial design and construction, as well as the flawless preparation and application executed by the Brewer Yacht Yards paint team.

Finding the right balance of performance and durability are key factors in any long distance sailing endeavor, and ALEXSEAL’s mix of these properties have helped Potts and the Brewer Yacht Yards staff renew and maintain the heritage,

competitiveness and beauty of Carina’s timeless design.

Select Group of European Builders & Applicators Gather for ALEXSEAL® Summit

The inaugural ALEXSEAL® Yacht Coatings Summit, held in Hamburg, Germany in July 2014, brought together over 40 specialists from the yacht market for seminars, technical discussions and practical workshops showcasing the company’s product innovations. New product developments were presented during the two-day event, and attendees were given the opportunity to provide valuable feedback to ALEXSEAL’s management and R&D teams. Conceived as part of a host of promotions celebrating the ALEXSEAL brand’s 10th Anniversary, the Summit was deemed such a success that plans are already being made to make this an annual event.

The first day of the Summit included an introduction to ALEXSEAL’s Germany-based parent company Mankiewicz Gebr. & Co., their 119-year history as a coatings innovator, and their quality management practices, as well as the history of ALEXSEAL and the brand’s many milestones over the past decade. A paint manager from a Dutch superyacht shipyard was in attendance as a guest speaker and spoke about production

quality at a superyacht shipyard and various coatings topics of great interest to everyone. The attendees also had the opportunity to preview a new prototype fairing compound developed for easy sanding, applicator friendliness and smooth application characteristics. To facilitate networking among the attendees and company representatives, the Summit agenda included a dinner cruise of the river Elbe touring Hamburg’s impressive container ship terminals and the city’s architectural highlights.

Day two encompassed discussions, origins and benefits of future technology from the newest trend in aviation BC/CC (Base Coat/Clear Coat). The participants were able to sample this innovative coating

system that features excellent hiding power in all colors with fast-drying, perfect gloss stability, very high UV resistance and excellent high build properties.

In addition to the event proving productive and informative for all of the attendees, the Summit generated a vast amount of positive feedback praising the company’s friendly atmosphere, hands-on demonstrations and clear, concise and usable information. All who were involved in this year’s summit, including consultants, shipyard managers, and applicators, along with ALEXSEAL and Mankiewicz staff, eagerly look forward to next year’s summit as ALEXSEAL kicks off its second “Decade of Innovation”.

Jarrett Bay’s Spectrum of Construction and Service Projects Favor ALEXSEAL®

Jarrett Bay Boatworks has long been one of North Carolina’s premier custom sportfish builders, and over the years has also grown exponentially into one of the Mid-Atlantic’s largest yacht service & repair hubs. Jarrett Bay boasts the ability to accommodate projects of almost any size. As founder Randy Ramsey explains, “No project is too big or too small for our team.” This is evident not only in the variety of luxury sportfishing boats they build, but also in the range of vessels they refit and paint each season. From small center consoles to large motoryachts from brands such as Nordhavn, Hatteras, Lazzara and Grand Banks, Jarrett Bay has become a world-class service destination that chooses the region’s preferred coatings system, ALEXSEAL®.

Jarrett Bay’s indoor repair facilities and paint booths are at the heart of a bustling 175 acre marine park. Vice President Tate Lawrence estimates that over 200 above-waterline coatings projects take place at the facility each year, including new construction, total repaints and repair projects. In their new construction operations, Jarrett Bay’s custom “cold-molding” process relies heavily on ALEXSEAL’s fairing and priming products to build up the surfaces of their hand-built okume wood and epoxy substrates. After fairing and priming, ALEXSEAL topcoat is used to protect and beautify the outer shell of their legendary wave-slicing Carolina hulls. In all parts of the world, the art of boat building is an evolving art form and as ALEXSEAL’s Tripp Nelson explains, “In many cases, ALEXSEAL’s

product innovations such as our High Build surfacing products and Fast Spot Primer have improved and simplified the cold molding process that Jarrett Bay and other builders use.” Many of the company’s more recent custom launches used the entire ALEXSEAL system, including the 32’ Miss Sarah all the way up to their largest completed hull to date, the 77’ Blank Check. After launching their most recent build, the 43’ Gregarious (featuring ALEXSEAL Kingston Gray), their new construction teams now have four boats under development – from 46’ to 90’ – all of which will utilize the complete ALEXSEAL system.

Jarrett Bay’s preference for ALEXSEAL extends from their construction facility across their service yard as they perform repairs, refits and repaint projects for a large variety of vessels. These clients come from different backgrounds, regions and boating purposes; however they all share a common goal when they bring their vessels to Jarrett Bay for ALEXSEAL paint work – a professional, durable and beautiful finish.

Viking Yachts and ALEXSEAL® Work Toward Building a Better Boat Everyday

Over the last 50 years, Viking Yachts has risen to be a dominant force in U.S. production yacht circles and the company’s emphasis on quality and efficiency has played a key role in that ascension. Viking’s mission to deliver the best products on the market has also led to their application of ALEXSEAL® Yacht Coatings when an owner seeks a more unique or custom hull look over the traditional gelcoat color options. Viking first started using ALEXSEAL topcoat several years ago when they decided to offer a wider color selection. As design trends have evolved and their in-house paint team became more familiar with ALEXSEAL’s ease of use, more of Viking’s boats have been coated in ALEXSEAL colors. After using gelcoat exclusively for the better part of five decades, approximately 50% of new Viking hulls are now being painted with ALEXSEAL topcoat to achieve a more flawless, glossy and UV-resistant finish.

Viking’s adoption of a new coatings system was orchestrated under close collaboration with ALEXSEAL’s Alastair Smith and the results have been a

resounding success. Smith recalls, “It took some time to develop and integrate the paint application into their production

processes. At first there were concerns that the coatings step may take too much time, but with detailed training and more experience, it quickly became a very refined and efficient process.” The Viking plant is indeed a marvel of efficiency, with the boats scheduled to move in rhythm down the production line every ten days. Several of Viking’s larger demo and customer boats now on the show circuit showcase these notably lustrous ALEXSEAL hulls, including the two most recent Viking 70C demos and the 62’ Big Torch which turned heads at their 2014 Viking VIP event. Viking’s largest

model to date, debuting by Fall 2014, is the 92C featuring a Shimmering Blue hull that helps make it arguably one of

the most visually striking sportfish boats ever launched. The company will return to the motoryacht sector in Fall 2014 when it unveils the first Viking 75MY, painted in ALEXSEAL Kingston Gray. ALEXSEAL’s Alastair Smith summarizes, “We are very grateful for the trust and business that Viking Yachts has given our company. It is a great relationship where both companies are constantly working towards a better product.” The ALEXSEAL team is excited to do its part to help Viking achieve its commitment to “building a better boat every day.”

“With detailed training and more experience, it quickly

became a very refined and efficient process.”

Mankiewicz Coatings Launches Next Phase of its U.S. Presence

ALEXSEAL’s parent company Mankiewicz Coatings has announced the expansion of its U.S. headquarters just four years after the ribbon cutting ceremony of the new facility in Charleston, SC. This is in response to a need for greater space and capacity to better serve the U.S. market, which they have now been operating locally within for 17 years. Managing Director of Mankiewicz Coatings, Peter Dietz explains that “After increasing local production and relocating to Charleston, SC, we were able to demonstrate to our customers the commitment to the U.S. market. The proximity to the Charleston seaport, the ability to produce locally and the access to southern truck routes to reach our customers on the west coast finally paid off.”

The new site provides an existing 25,000 square foot building and 10 acres of land on which the company intends to build a brand new Research and Development lab, state of the art production facility, a semi-automated logistical center, as well as a training facility to help educate and train applicators on new technologies.

Just three years after its relocation to Charleston, the US subsidiary was able to double their revenue. “It was an easy decision for our owner, Michael Grau, to approve an additional investment for the project. The first phase of the expansion should be finalized by the first quarter of 2015. We strongly believe in the US market and are very grateful for the excellent support provided by Berkeley County and the State of South Carolina,” says Dietz.

Mankiewicz Coatings, LLC is a subsidiary of Mankiewicz Gebr. & Co., which was founded in 1895 and is operating facilities in more than 20 countries around the world to ensure global availability of its high quality coating systems. President & CEO Michael Grau adds, “…serving the US market with excellent products through a reliable supply chain must be performed locally. By launching the next phase of our US operations, I am

convinced to be able to provide that kind of service in a competitive way…”

The incredible growth in revenue and recognition that Mankiewicz Coatings has experienced in the U.S. market can be partly attributed to the exponential growth of ALEXSEAL® Yacht Coatings. This growth started with the first yacht owners & builders who were willing to trust an innovative new product on their vessel over ten years ago. Proudly, discerning mariners and shipyards around the U.S. and the world now recognize – and demand – ALEXSEAL’s superior marine coatings systems.

Scarborough Boats Shine in ALEXSEAL® Coatings

Saga, the latest from North Carolina boat builder Ricky Scarborough, recently made her splash in ALEXSEAL® Fighting Lady Yellow. A custom designed 60’ sportfishing yacht, Saga turns heads with her long sleek lines and bold color. Faired and finished in ALEXSEAL topcoats, she is complimented by a full teak transom, cockpit & toe rail, which accentuates her ALEXSEAL Cloud White deck and bridge.

Scarborough Boatworks got its start in 1977 when commercial fisherman Ricky Scarborough Sr. began building his own boat. Over 30 years later, Scarborough has completed more than 80 projects from 25’ to 85’. In 1993, Ricky Jr. joined his father, and in 2010 Ricky Sr. fully retired and passed the baton to his son. Ricky Jr.

is now taking the family business to new levels while maintaining the legacy and quality of what initially put Scarborough boats on the map. The company has utilized ALEXSEAL products on at least six of their recent custom boats and have been impressed by its many attributes. According to Ricky Jr., “The ALEXSEAL products are easy-to-use and the support staff has been great. Tripp Nelson is

always eager to listen and worked to implement wider packaging that made it easier to scoop out large amounts of fairing compound.” While a small detail, this valid suggestion from the applicators was implemented by ALEXSEAL and has led to more efficient use of the product for many builders around the globe.

The dedication and attention to detail that is given to every custom build by Scarborough Boatworks helps to ensure their vessels offer decades of offshore enjoyment. Likewise, with proper care and maintenance, their ALEXSEAL coatings will provide many years of like-new appearance and resistance to the harsh elements.

Swan 90, Spirit, Undergoes a Beautiful Transformation

When setting out to refit and update Spirit, a Swan 90 sailing yacht, the yacht’s new owners chose New Zealand-based Yachting Developments for the company’s knowledge of composites and their unblemished reputation for major yacht refits and new custom builds. Yachting Developments boasts a full in-house team of engineers, designers, upholsters and construction experts.

Important goals of this major refit were gaining a more modern look inside and out while retaining or improving her sea-going capability, safety and good cruising performance. All of the cabins and living spaces were upgraded with modern finishes, larger windows; and many mechanical and structural updates as well, including new generators and

a semi-permanent bimini hardtop. This highly involved refit lasted a full year but, with the extensive use of composites, along with the lightweight formulas in ALEXSEAL® Yacht Coatings, this Swan 90 was able to shave 5 tons from her overall weight. Shimmering from bow to stern in a new ALEXSEAL topcoat, Spirit is ready to show off her new look to the world. During her relaunch, the owner expressed his thorough satisfaction with the refit and Yachting Developments by stating, “I was particularly impressed with the way the hull and structural modifications were formed and the quality of finish, through all key trades. Above all, attention to detail has been a key feature.”

Spirit is just one example of what a capable and experienced shipyard can

do with a classic and iconic vessel. And with Yachting Developments receiving the Best Refitted Yacht award for their work on the J Class, Endeavour, at the 2013 World Superyacht Awards, it is no secret that they have an amazing and talented team. ALEXSEAL is delighted to have a yard and builder with such great experience and accolades choose our yacht coatings for their ease of application and years of lasting beauty and protection.

For privacy reasons, we’re not always able to announce the superyachts using our products, but we can still enjoy the super glossy results!
