Welcome to the School of Veterinary Medicine and ScienceAs one of the newest veterinary schools in the UK, we welcome around 150 veterinary students each year and equip them with the diagnostic, medical, surgical and other skills required to succeed in a changing world of veterinary medicine.

The school has a dynamic, vibrant and highly stimulating learning environment, achieved through a blend of students and researchers, both home and international, who are committed to innovative learning and scientific discovery.

We offer three undergraduate degree courses, accredited by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, designed with clinical outcomes in mind and based upon excellence in teaching, and informed by scientific research. We believe that our courses, which integrate clinical medicine and surgery with pathology and basic sciences, ensure that Nottingham

graduates gain the best possible foundation on which to build any future career in the veterinary profession.

We are ranked 2nd for research power in the Research Excellence Framework 2014, with 80% of our submissions rated at ‘internationally excellent’ or ‘world-leading’.

All of this takes place in our state-of-the-art, purpose-built facilities on Sutton Bonington Campus and with our many clinical associates.

I hope you find this brochure useful. Please don’t hesitate to contact us for further information.

EducationAt Nottingham, we are the highest rated veterinary school for overall student satisfaction in each National Student Survey since we were established. We are consistently highly commended for our teaching, organisation, support and facilities.

Undergraduate courses within the School of Veterinary Medicine and Science include:• Veterinary Medicine and Surgery -

BVM BVS with BVMed Sci• Veterinary Medicine and Surgery

including a Preliminary Year - BVM BVS with BVMed Sci

• Veterinary Medicine and Surgery including a Gateway Year - BVM BVS with BVMed Sci (open to UK students only)

We established the preliminary and gateway year courses to widen participation for students who may have lacked educational opportunities or for those who are high achieving but do not have the required science qualifications for direct entry. The six-year courses involve a foundation year which provides students with the relevant scientific knowledge needed for the later years of the course. We also introduce animal-handling skills. After the preliminary or gateway year, students join year one of the five-year veterinary medicine and surgery degree.
