Rational for Trying Moodle Problems that Course Based Software

Problems that Course Based Software Might HelpLab partners

Labs start the first week. TAs don’t know who is in class for several weeks, let alone who are lab partners. Some students change partners, some several times. This causes problems since the work is shared and depends on strong co-operation.In the future each partner will have to register on Moodle. It is very visible to the TAs and to the lab section.

On-Line qizzesBefore they do the lab, studentds have their prelab worked checked. The teaching assistants are trying to check if their circuits work, and really can’t tell if the students understand their prelab. Students who copy the prelab, or who don’t understand it may get filtered here.

Rapid easy mark feedbackAt present the teaching assistants are given an Excel template and told very clearly not to change anything. Each lab has 5 marks. these are entered on the spreadsheet. When completed, there is an Excel macro which removes the student’s names and generates an html file which the assistants post. There are now 60 postings, and as a result, many student’s don’t bother to check their marks. Multiple marks, and correction from different sources are a problem.Moodle is a central data base where a student can easily see their own marks, but no other students.

Hyperlinked explainationsThere is a glooary for terms, and a wiki to which all student’s can post.

The Choice Activity The teacher asks a question and gives a choice of multiple responses.Uses: From Moodle Manual

(off label use)Use for Lab Partner Choice• Initiate mass email before lab starts.

• Student gets login instructionsand starts Choice.

• Gets list of other students in his lab section. finds friend.

• Contacts friend

• Each use “Choice” to choose a lab group

A poll to stimulate thinking on a topic

Allow a class vote on a direction for the course

To gather research consent

Contact method needs refinement.

No emails in list at the moment.

Can make choice in lab.

“Forums” does this easily

Identifying who is in one’s lab sectionEach student finds this out under Participants. At the moment the participants’ list does not give emails. We should change this to give connect emails, so the student’s can easily contact potential partners. We are looking at Forums. They generate automatic emails from postings, and we could post an email to all registered students in December, to start looking for a partner. It might help.

Choosing a partnerAn Activity comes up when they login in January. This tells them to look at the participants list and guides them into the Choice for their lab section. They can see what lab groups have formed already. They can put themselves into any empty lab group, or one with only one person.Their partner must put themselves into the same lab group.Students not registered in the lab can appear to have choosen a lab group, but no other student can see it.

Getting Student Names, Numbers and EmailsFrom Banner

Our secretaries will email me a class listFrom Carleton Central

Class lists (with no emails)displayed on the screen.

Screen copy these lists -> ExcelTweak data in Excel

MoodleMoodle reads named columns in csv (comma separated variable) format. (Top-level) -> Users -> Accounts -> Upload UsersWill create new, or update old accounts, as desired.Works well!

Why I like This.Carleton Central data is real time

=> Lab lists are current as I am.Helps control lab jumping.

WDN students are up-to-date

Don’t have to bother Patrick dailyfor updated lists.

Obtaining Class Lists

Carleton University © John Knight FirstAttemptsAtMoodle.fm p. 16, Revised; April 3, 2007

Obtaining Class Lists Problems that Course Based Software

Obtaining Class ListsA) Student Lists from Carleton Central1. They do not give emails which must be obtained from Banner. 1) In Excel - Sweep-out enough rows for all the students - Format the cells for no wordwrap. {->Format->Cells->alignment and completely uncheck wordwrap } 2) Login to Carleton Central

Faculty Services -> Summary Class List ->Select Course: To get the list you want 3) On the the downloaded sheet - sweep-out the whole list and copy (^C). Exclude the headings and the summary at the bottom. - deposit it in Excel via {Right click, Paste Special, ->Text}B) Getting the information for Moodle 1) Make a column username, which is their email name. Fill it using using the formulas given starting in Row 2 =LEFT(P2,FIND("@",P2,1)-1) We assume P2 contains the firts email address, -1 removes the "@" 2) Make a column firstname from the combined name in the regstrar's list. =RIGHT($D2,LEN($D2)-FIND(",",$D2,1)-1) We assume D2 contains the first combined name. and make a column last name =LEFT($D2,FIND(",",$D2,1)-1)3) Make a column course1. Separate the course section from the title i.e. ELEC 2607 C-> C. Assume it starts in D2 =SUBSTITUTE(LEFT($E2,LEN($E2)-1)," ","") Changes ELEC 2607 C->ELEC2607 =RIGHT($E2,1) Changes ELEC 2607 C -> CC) To make the Moodle file

1. Banner is the main administrative system at Carleton. Carleton Central is a system accesible by teachers, that can supply class lists.

Moodle Ready Excel Sheet Problems that Course Based Software

1) Make an Excel sheet with these titles at the top of the first 11 columns. Groups and phone are optional.. username password firstname lastname idnumber email course1 group1 phone1 type1 group2The password is the student number. Since that can be changed, the idnumber= student number.Type is always 1 for studentsCourse is ELEC2670 which is the short name for the course.Group1, in ELEC2607 is the lab group i.e L1O etc.Group2 is A, B, C, the lecture section here. Group1 and group2 are interchanged to group into lecture sections.2) copy the appropriate data columns onto this new “Moodle” sheet. 3) Save the file as a .xls file4) Then save the Moodle page as a cvs file.5) In Moodle be sure all the lab groups and lecture groups are already created.6) In Moodle use DOE(Top-level) -> Users -> Accounts -> Upload UsersBy default Moodle creates new user accounts, and skips records where the username matches an existing account. Setting "Update existing accounts" to Yes, will update existing accounts. It does this well, but will tell you it updated the rewritten people to the same group they were in already.7) To put in the lecture groups (Sections) change group2 into group1 and rerun. It will now put everyone in two groups., the lab and the lecture. - Be sure you have precreated the Lecture groups. - be sure to allow Update Existing Accounts
