In Chemical Engineering:Cledwyn Tawanda MangundaThesis Title: An investigation into Fe(III) oxy-hydroxides precipitation in lime neutralization processes
Cledwyn Mangunda completed his BEng (Hons) and MEng qualifications at the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. He worked in the food and timber processing industries and then pursued a career in academia before joining UCT for his PhD studies in 2015. Cledwyn Mangunda’s thesis focuses on understanding the influence of operating conditions on the product characteristics and solid-liquid separation of iron solids formed during the lime treatment of acid mine drainage (AMD). His investigation covers low feed iron concentrations systems, similar to those which pose AMD treatment challenges, and how changes in these iron concentrations influence dewatering behaviour. He proceeds to look at how moderate variations in temperature, amount of neutralising agent, and extended periods of elevated temperature treatment influence the settling and filtering of the iron solids. He further unpacks the complex nano and micro-structure of iron solids, thereby establishing a systematic relationship which links operating conditions to product characteristics and consequent improvements in solid-liquid separation. The findings will inform AMD treatment processes with potential improvements to operating conditions that will lead to reduced deposition of iron solids to landfills and enhance water recovery.

In Electrical Engineering:Stanislaus Ogechukwu NnadihThesis Title: Multi-wavelength observations of sprites over southern Africa
Stanislaus Nnadih is a physicist from Enugu State University of Science and Technology, Nigeria. He joined SpaceLab in the Electrical Engineering Department at UCT in 2015 for his PhD studies. He is an alumnus of the International Space University and a staff member of the Nigeria Space Agency. Stanislaus Nnadih’s thesis focuses on observing upper atmospheric lightning phenomena known as sprites, which are often described as electrical discharges in the mesosphere following an active thunderstorm. Although the sprite phenomenon was anecdotally reported over Johannesburg in 1937, for many years there were no active sprite-related research programmes in Africa, despite it being a lightning-rich continent. In 2016, Stanislaus Nnadih began an observation campaign at the South African Astronomical Observatory in Sutherland and recorded the first images of sprites in southern Africa. He also made several other observations of these elusive events in 2017 and 2018. His study shows that the average occurrence rate for sprites in southern Africa is 0.14 sprites/minute and suggests that the average characteristic electron energies and the strength of the electric fields in sprites were 5.5 eV and 150 V/m, respectively.

In Sustainable Energy Engineering:Deepti CharitarThesis Title: Exploring the potential of nanofluids to enhance the productivity of solar stills
Deepti Charitar holds a BSc(Eng) in Chemical Engineering and MSc(Eng) in Sustainable Energy Engineering from UCT. After completing her
bachelor’s degree, she worked as a Technical Officer in Mauritius for some months before returning to UCT for her postgraduate studies. Deepti Charitar’s thesis focuses on the use of nanofluids in solar stills. A solar still is a device which uses solar energy to produce potable water from saline water. Nanofluids provide an attractive means of increasing the productivity of a solar still. The study examines, both theoretically and experimentally, the effect of nanoparticle size on the productivity of solar stills. This was achieved by developing a novel mathematical model incorporating the view factor for solar stills with nanofluids. Identical solar stills were designed, built and tested under the same climatic conditions. It was found that the productivity of a solar still decreases with increasing nanoparticle size. Nonetheless, the mathematical model for the nanofluids was only marginally sensitive to nanoparticle size although the effect of nanoparticle size on distillate yield was experimentally significant. A key implication of the findings is the need to develop accurate thermophysical correlations for nanofluids.
Supervisor: Dr A Madhlopa (Mechanical Engineering)
In Mechanical Engineering: Patrick Udeme-Obong Akpan
Thesis Title: Impact on heat rate and subsequent emissions due to varying operation of coal fired power plants
Patrick Akpan holds a BEng in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Nigeria (UNN) and an MSc in Process Systems Engineering from Cranfield University. He has seven years teaching and research experience at UNN and joined the department of Mechanical Engineering at UCT in 2016 for his PhD studies. Patrick Akpan’s thesis focuses on the development of a novel and simple Variable Turbine Cycle Heat Rate (V-TCHR) model for predicting the partial load thermal performance of different Coal Fired Power Plant (CFPP) architectures. This model will
enable more accurate CO2 emissions impact studies for electrical networks with a substantial renewable generation. The research begins with development and validation methodologies for setting up representative CFPP process models using the Virtual Plant software. The thermal performance of 192 process models was investigated at various partial load conditions. The observations drawn from the data led to the development of the V-TCHR model. He applied the V-TCHR model in a CO2 emissions impact study of four different hypothetical power system networks. His results show the applicability of the V TCHR model in energy mix modelling, and how one would under-estimate the emissions by 2-9% if variable heat rate is not incorporated into the study.

The term ‘Bachelor’ derives from ancient ceremonies (the first such was believed to have been at Oxford in 1432) held to honour achievements of scholarship. The word derives from bacca lauri (laurel berry). Instead of the hoods we use today to signify your graduation, graduands of old wore garlands of laurel leaves and berries.
So the term has nothing to do with our modern understandings of what being a bachelor means, and everything to do with a long tradition of celebrating high achievement.
