The University of Ljubljana has a rich tradition. With more than 45,000 graduate and postgraduate stu-dents, it ranks as a very large university. Approx-imately 4,000 higher education teachers are em-ployed in the university’s 3 arts academies and 23 faculties. In the 2013/14 academic year, 5,384 stu-dents were enrolled, makeing the Faculty of Eco-nomics of University of Ljubljana (the FELU) one of the biggest faculties of the university.

The university was founded in 1919 on the basis of a centuries-long tradition of providing education, re-maining the only Slovenian university for half a cen-tury. It is based in Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia,

a relatively large city in Central Europe with over 300,000 inhabitants. Students account for more than one-seventh of the city’s population, giving it a youthful and lively character.

The university’s central office and most of the schools are situated in the centre of Ljubljana. Several newer modern University of Ljubljana buildings are locat-ed on the city’s outskirts. The university is renowned for the quality of its study programmes. Since the 2007/08 accademic year, all study programmes on offer have been in accordance with the Bologna Declaration.

The Faculty of Economics of the University of Ljublja-na (the FELU) was established in 1946 and forms an integral part of the University of Ljubljana. The Uni-versity of Ljubljana is a public institution and the larg-est university in Slovenia, while the FELU is one of the university’s biggest schools. It is the leading institu-tion of higher education in business and economics in Slovenia with a well-established brand in Europe and worldwide.

The highest standards of quality are paramount to the FELU, and it is therefore engaged in the process of international accreditation. In 2006, the FELU be-came the first business school in Southeast Europe to be awarded the EQUIS accreditation. Since 2010, the FELU has held both EQUIS and AACSB accreditations.

Dear FELU friends,

The new academic year has started and, while writ-ing this message, the FELU campus is alive with our numerous students from Slovenia and abroad. The FELU has become a place where enthusiasm for business and economics is highly valued. Everyone involved with the FELU is guided by our five core values: integrity, cooperation, responsibility, knowl-edge, and academic freedom. The 2013/14 Annual Report presents our accom-plishments, aspirations, and capacities of our facul-ty members. Our service to society is underpinned by the three pillars of sustainability: people, planet, and profit. With 187 international partners from 44 countries around the world, the FELU is a symbol of Slovenian academic internationalisation. The FELU’s intellectual spirit offers a variety of research oppor-tunities in economics, management, business, and finance. I’m very proud of our members who serve on prominent international boards, creating and disseminating knowledge of our future society. Our faculty and students are exposed to cross-cultural experiences. They seek out innovative solutions to real-world problems, develop into global thinkers, and keep in touch with the latest economic and busi-ness findings. A substantial number of workshops

have been conducted at the FELU over the last ac-ademic year, all aiming to enhance the knowledge and skills of our faculty and inspire our students. Our alumni include fellows from all sectors at home and abroad.

Finally, the FELU is also placing an emphasis on important socio-economic challenges Slovenia is facing. In February 2014, the Corporate Integrity Guidelines were presented along with our partners in accordance with the Good Practice Guidance on Internal Controls, Ethics and Compliance.

I conclude my introduction with the promise that the FELU will continue to focus on each student’s lifelong success and develop principled leaders to serve their communities in a global business environment.

A NEW DEAN APPOINTED

The FELU started the 2013/14 study year with a new Dean, Full Professor, Metka Tekavčič, Ph.D. With her strong com-mitment to follow the FELU’s values, the new Dean opens a new chapter in the FELU’s success story. The Dean’s wish is for the FELU’s academic community to excel through toler-ance, mutual trust, motivation, cooperation and shared re-spect for each and everyone’s achievements.

FDI SUMMIT 2013

The FDI (Foreign Direct Investment) Summit 2013 Slovenia is a major international business event co-organised by the FELU. The theme of the 2013 Summit “A Clear Vision For The Future” focused on foreign investment, privatization and corporate governance.

ERASMUS DAY 2013

In November, the traditional Erasmus Day was organised in order to present various possibilities of studying abroad. More than 300 students participated in the event. At a roundtable, former exchange students shared the expec-tations and experiences they had gained during their stud-ies and life abroad. Students had the opportunity to obtain more information about the partner schools at the Erasmus fair.

FELU STUDENTS FOR FAMILIES IN NEED VIA THE “BOTRSTVO” PROJECT

Within the courses Business Environment and Developing Entrepreneurial Opportunities, FELU students joined in the “EUR 3 Challenge”. With a minimum investment of EUR 3 through their group entrepreneurial projects they raised EUR 2.200 for families in need via the Association of Friends of Youth Participation and their “Botrstvo” project.

INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE RENEWTOWN

The FELU hosted the final international conference of the project ReNewTown “New post-socialist city: Competitive and Attractive”. The project aimed to enable the compet-itiveness and attractiveness of the post-socialist cities via exchange knowledge among academics, urbanists and oth-er interest groups.

BUSINESS NEWS DAILY PUBLISHED ON THE FELU RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

Assistant Professor, Matej Černe, Ph.D., presented findings from a paper published in the Academy of Management Journal in an interview for Business News Daily. He stressed the negative consequences of hiding knowledge.

FELU HOLDS THE WORLD FAMOUS ECONOMIST PROF. BENOIT COEURE

The renowned French economist Mr. Benoît Coeuré, a mem-ber of the European Central Bank executive board, gave a lecture at the FELU entitled “The euro area – challenges ahead”. Mr. Coeuré pointed out that all European countries are in the same boat and headed in the same direction with regard to the recent economic environment.

CHRISTMAS TREE OUT OF FELU BOOKS

Students and employees enjoyed Christmas time in the gathering and making of a special Christmas tree made out of FELU books. There were more than 600 FELU books used for the tree.

BETA GAMMA SIGMA HONOUR SOCIETY

The FELU became the first school in the region to establish a Beta Gamma Sigma Chapter in 2012. It offers its graduates opportunities equal to those enjoyed by students of the best business schools in the world. This May was already the third year in a row that new members were inducted into the so-ciety. The BGS Honour Society inducted 104 graduates as members this year.

LJUBLJANA SUMMER SCHOOL

At the 15th Ljubljana Summer School of the FELU, which took place between 7 and 25 June, 472 Slovenian and inter-national students of business and economics attended 25 lectures given by 37 prominent Slovenian and internation-al professors. As part of the intensive educational process, Summer School participants visited Slovenian companies and, at the same time, learned more about the history of Slovenia and its cultural and natural beauties.

THE MONTH OF CHINESE CULTURE

To honour the 20th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations between Slovenia and the People’s Republic of China and the second anniversary of the establishment of the Confucius Institute Ljubljana, a large number of cultural events took place, all part of the Month of Chinese Culture.

THE FELU EMBRACES THE WORLD: THE EXPANDING GLOBAL PARTNERSHIP NETWORK

The FELU signed a cooperation agreement with Tongji Uni-versity’s School of Economics and Management, one of the leading Chinese higher education institutions and an EQ-UIS-accredited school.

CONFERENCE OF THE EUROPEAN ASSOCIATION OF LABOUR ECONOMISTS (EALE)

The FELU hosted 26th Annual Conference of the European Association of Labour Economists (EALE). Over 440 par-ticipants from 33 countries presented high-quality research on labour market issues, mobility, migration, regional labour markets, income distribution etc.

CONFERENCE »ECONOMIC PERSPECTIVE OF SOUTH-EASTERN EUROPE IN THE POST-CRISIS PERIOD«

The FELU co-organised the conference »Economic perspec-tive of South-eastern Europe in the post-crisis period« with cooperation of Central Bank of Kosovo. The conference was opened by the FELU Dean, Professor, Metka Tekavčič, Ph.D., the governor of the Central Bank of Kosovo, Mr. Bedri Hamza and the governor of the Central Bank of Slovenia, Professor, Boštjan Jazbec, Ph.D.

EUROPEAN MASTER IN TOURISM MANAGEMENT (EMTM) PASSES THE QUALITY AUDIT

Brussels (namely, the EACEA - Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency) reported that the FELU master pro-gramme EMTM, which is conducted jointly with the University of Girona (Spain) and Southern Denmark University (Denmark), successfully passed the auditing of quality according to the Erasmus + criteria. Only 19 programmes successfully passed the audit, and the EMTM programme was ranked as one the best.

PROFESSOR DUŠAN MRAMOR, Ph.D. APPOINTED NEW MINISTER OF FINANCE

FELU Professor Dušan Mramor, Ph.D. was appointed Min-ister of Finance in the new Slovenian Government. He was sworn in as Slovenian’s new Minister of Finance at the end of September 2014.

VISIT OF THE SHANGHAI EXECUTIVE VICE MAYOR

Shanghai executive vice mayor Mr. Tu Guangshao visited the FELU and the Confucius Institute Ljubljana to acknowledge the 10th anniversary of Confucius institutes. The Shanghai vice mayor and his associates met with the FELU manage-ment led by the FELU’s Dean, Professor, Metka Tekavčič, Ph.D., the Minister of Education, Professor, Stanka Setnikar Cankar, Ph.D. and a vice-rector of the Ljubljana University, Professor, Maja Makovec Brenčič, Ph.D.

ENVIRONMENTALLY-FRIENDLY PROJECT COMPLETED

After two years of activities the FELU successfully complet-ed energy-efficient rehabilitation project. The investment will provide heat and energy savings for further generations.

THE 12TH INTERNATIONAL BANKING SEMINAR

The FELU organised the 12th International Banking Seminar in Montenegro entitled »The Future of Banks and Financial System«. More than 40 financial experts and governors from diverse parts of ex-Yugoslav countries participated at the event.

CORPORATE INTEGRITY GUDELINES

The document Corporate Integrity Guidelines was present-ed to public by four partner institutions, among them is also the FELU. The document provides guidance and guidelines for companies that want to establish a value-based business.

STUDY PROGRAMMESAs the leading national higher education and re-search institution and a double-accredited business school, the FELU offers Bologna type programmes in all three cycles (3+2+3 structure). Along with the publicly-funded programmes in the Slovenian lan-guage, the FELU offers English tracks at all three lev-els of study. In addition, several double and joint de-gree programmes with renowned schools and open campuses abroad are offered. Programme develop-ment forms an important part of the FELU’s strate-gy since it supports internationalisation, the involve-ment of the business community, and the achieving of excellence.

DOUBLE DEGREE PROGRAMMESA Double Degree is an approved combined study programme leading to two degrees from two uni-versities. After successfully completiing all the pro-gramme requirements, FELU students receive a bachelor’s and/or master’s degree from the FELU as well as a bachelor’s and/or master’s degree from the

partner universities. The FELU is highly selective in its choice of partner universities, adding only high profile, research-oriented and accredited universities to its list. The FELU offers three 1st cycle double de-gree programmes and six 2nd cycle double degree programmes.

JOINT AND DOUBLE DEGREE PROGRAMMESIn the 2nd cycle, the FELU offers six double degree programmes and two joint degree programmes. Stu-dents interested in studying public sector issues have the opportunity to enrol in a joint (triple) degree

programme of three institutions. Students interested in tourism management are offered a joint European Master’s programme aimed at qualifying graduates to deal with the challenges of contemporary tourism.

BROADENING HORIZONSThe FELU is building an open-minded student so-ciety. FELU students are offered courses by distin-guished academics that encourage them to think and act. The students have multiple opportunities to collect and gain international experience during their study programme. Students can learn vital aspects of the Chinese language and culture participate in na-tional and international projects, join students from all around the world in the FELU’s Summer Schools etc. All of this comes with just one aim, to broaden our students’ horizons and enable them to grow in all respects, professionally and personally.

The FELU encourages students to become involved in various activities related to their study and con-nected with their future career. The FELU’s Centre for Student and Career Services (CERŠ) helps students with their learning process, the development of per-sonal and professional skills, and career planning. Therefore, personal student development is integrat-ed into regular course work. In 2013/14 CERŠ organ-ised numerous workshops aimed at developing stu-dents’ learning and communication skills, and their overall effectiveness

STUDENTS’ ACTIVITIESStudent Council is the link between the FELU, Uni-versity and the FELU students. Through the Council students are able to participate in the FELU’s bodies and share their opinions, comments and proposals.

The FELU provides a well-developed tutorship pro-gramme for a wide range of its students:

• organisational support for introductory tutorship;

• course-specific tutorship;

• tutorship for students with special needs;

• support for student internship programmes;

• tutorship for international students.

Strong support for student associations active at the FELU is also offered. The majority of our students are active members of at least one student association. Their aim is to bring together ambitious individuals with exciting new ideas and to further develop their potential.

To name just a few of such active student associa-tions: the FELU Student Organisation, the FELU news, Management group, the FELU Sports Club, Young Project Managers, Students’ section of the Marketing Association of Slovenia, Debating society of the FELU etc.

BETA GAMMA SIGMA CHAPTER (BGS) As an institution accredited by the AACSB, the FELU recently established its own Beta Gamma Sigma (BGS) chapter (named “Klub BGS EF”). Installation of the Chapter coincided with the first induction cer-emony in January 2012. Invitations to join the BGS are received by the best students of their generation in AACSB-accredited business degree programmes. The induction ceremony is held once a year in spring. More than 100 FELU students join the BGS every year, with the ceremony thus being dedicated to honour them.

“After being awarded two of the most prestigious international business school accreditations, the next logical step for the FELU was to give its best students and graduates the opportunity to join the BGS network. Their outstanding scholastic achievements can now be rewarded by a lifelong membership in this select group of ‘the best in business’. The BGS designation sets individuals apart from the crowd and gives them an extra edge in the highly competitive international en-vironment.”

STUDENTS’ ACHIEVEMENTSStudents with an outstanding study achievement receive FELU awards and commendations, and may contend for the University Prešeren Award. In addi-tion, FELU students regularly participate in various business competitions such as the Trimo Research Award, Marketing Prospect Award, SID Bank Award, Krka Award, Koper Bank – Intensa San Paulo “Cus-tomer Satisfaction University Award”, the Imagine Cup (Global Student Technology Competition), Luka Koper Award etc.

In the 2013/14 academic year, numerous awards and prizes were granted to students whose work was particularly outstanding, with selected highlights in-cluding: “HRM Prospect 2013”, “Marketing Prospect Award”, four Bank of Slovenia thesis awards, the CFA Institute Research Challenge Slovenia award etc.

THE FELU’S SPORTING CHAMPIONS FOR 2013/14The FELU’s students have achieved remarkable suc-cess in sports: athletics, tennis, table tennis, swim-ming, golf, savate (French boxing), chess etc.

In the 2013/14 University Basketball League, the FELU’s Women’s Basketball team won the championship.

In the University indoor football league – Futsal 2013/14 – the FELU’s team came second.

A FELU student achieved second place in the National Circle Run Championships.

RAISING MEMBER INVOLVEMENTThe FELU Alumni offers its members career, profes-sional and personal development and counselling, along with information about other members and ac-tive participation with the Alumni organization. The success of the FELU Alumni depends on the involve-ment of its members and therefore there are many ways to get actively involved in the Alumni: online networking with colleagues, taking an active part at Alumni events, joining sections’ organising com-mittees, writing articles (EFnet online network, web-site), assistance in organising and conducting various events, sponsoring events, establishing professional associations within the FELU Alumni etc. In addi-tion, to keep the FELU alumni connected, a LinkedIn Alumni group, Twitter account and Facebook fan page have been set up.

ALUMNI EVENTSThe FELU Alumni organises over 20 events each year, including high quality annual social gatherings, Alumni forums, Alumni& events and other interest-ing activities on different topics: “Alumni Gourmet: The Universe of Flavours”, “Google AdWords Acad-emy”, “Auditing the EuroBasket”, “Confrontation of Alumni Generations”, “Alumni Business Informatics: Students Need Experience”, “Alumni Forum: Family Entrepreneurship”, “Alumni Cyclists Conquer the Slo-venian Coast”, “Alumni Managers’ Lounge: Network-ing Like a Pro”, “Alumni Gourmet: Dinner in the Dark”, “The First Alumni MARKEThink: Brands are Like Chil-dren”, “Alumni GOLF: Training with a PRO”, “Alumni MARKEThink: Creative Thinking Workshop” etc.

At the beginning of 2013, the FELU started with the ALUMNI& series of events. The following events were held in the past academic year under the “ALUM-NI&” brand: ALUMNI&eVino: »Afterwork Party« and ALUMNI& Patrick Cowden: The Future of Leadership.

Janez Škrabec is the founder and Director of Riko Group, an internationally rec-ognised and successful company that manufactures and markets ecological and energy-saving wooden buildings.

Mr. Škrabec studied economics at the FELU and pursued further studies at the IEDC — Bled School of Management (Slovenia), Cleveland State University (USA), and INSEAD Fontainebleau (France).

Andreja Kodrin is the founder and Director of Challenge:Future, a global think-DO-tank that engages youth in sustainability innovation for tomorrow while creat-ing a positive impact today.

Mrs. Kodrin studied economics at the FELU and pursued further studies at the University of Maribor, INSEAD, Harvard Business School, and IMD. She is currently working on her Ph.D. thesis at the FELU.

Jože Colarič is the CEO of Krka, a producer of prescription pharmaceuticals, non-prescription products and animal health products whose activities are sup-plemented by health resorts and tourist services.

Mr. Colarič graduated from the FELU in 1979.

Metka Malovrh is responsible for growing and developing the Adriatic region at Google.

Mrs. Malovrh studied management and organisation at the FELU, where she also pursued her MBA studies. In addition, she worked at the FELU as a Teaching Assis-tant prior to moving on in her professional career.

EXCELLENT RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIESThe research findings represent new discoveries in economics and business studies, and are includ-ed in business processes in all areas of the FELU’s activities.

The FELU faculty members have traditionally active-ly participated in shaping research policy in Slove-nia, and places a special emphasis on transferring research findings to students at all three levels of the FELU’s Bologna programmes and to society as a whole. The FELU promotes courage, acumen, di-versity and innovation in research and motivates re-searchers to publish their findings.

The FELU provides excellent opportunities for re-search with a plethora of motivational mechanisms such as research funds, systems for reducing the teaching load, the Best Research Paper Award, the introduction of annual interviews and preparation of individual research plans etc.

FELU researchers are fully supported by the Re-search Office which offers complete professional and administrative assistance in the preparation and registration stages of projects, along with manage-ment and monitoring. The Research Office organises weekly research seminars and research-related train-ing seminars. Some of the most recent seminars were entitled “Pitching Research”, “Should I stay or should

I go? Mobility of young, educated Eastern Europe-ans”, “Optimising a research strategy” etc.

ECONOMIC AND BUSINESS REVIEW – EBRThe FELU is a publisher of Economic and Business Review (EBR), an international, double-blind peer re-view journal. From 2014 onwards, the journal is pub-lished three times per year in the English language and once per year in Slovenian.

One of the journal’s strengths is its multi-disciplinary approach. Its aim is to further research and dissemi-nate research results in the area of applied business and economic studies, especially concerning bank and financial management, business informatics, entre-preneurship, international business, management and marketing.

Its editorial board consists of many internationally renowned members. Papers that employ either qual-itative or quantitative research approaches, surveys, case studies, experiments or historical models may be considered for review.

RESEARCH OUTPUT IN 2013/14 In the 2013/14 academic year, the FELU participated in 6 research programmes, 6 research projects, and 4 bilateral projects commissioned by the Slovenian Research Agency. The FELU also participated in 11 Euro-pean projects and 13 projects commissioned by the EC and various ministries, agencies and corporate clients.

The FELU’s core faculty members regularly produce original contributions to knowledge that are dis

seminated worldwide. Papers published by the core faculty include FT top 45 journals (Academy of Man-agement Review, Organisation Science, Accounting, Organisations & Society, Journal of International Business Studies etc.), top interdisciplinary journals (PNAS, Science etc.) and leading journals in specific fields the FELU covers in its research (e.g. Tourism Management).

ANALYSIS OF PUBLISHED ARTICLESThe FELU is an institution with a long tradition and wide array of qualified and experienced researchers. Research at the FELU is conducted in 6 research pro-grammes which embody our key research areas. Our research represents new knowledge in the fields of business and economics. Words like Slovenia, perfor-mance, case, management and evidence are among the most common words used in article titles published in

SCI/SSCI ranked papers. The picture below presents article titles published in 232 SCI/SSCI ranked papers from 2011 to 2014. There were 133 foreign co-authors of papers published in SCI/SSI from 2011 and 2014. Most foreign co-authors came from the USA, the UK, the Netherlands and Croatia.

BEST PUBLISHED PAPER AWARDSTo pursue its goal of promoting research and to help advance its quality, the FELU established an annual awards programme. The programme is open to au-thors of articles from the FELU. The criteria for the award is based on the relative ranking of journals in which articles are published, listed in the Social Sci-ence Citation (SSCI) and Science Citation Index (SCI) as defined by Thomson Reuters. The award, both cash and non-cash, is given annually for the three best arti-cles published in the previous calendar year.

RESEARCH CONFERENCESIn the 2013/14 study year, the following research conferences were organised at the FELU: the FELU Doctoral Student Conference, the 2014 ReNewTown Conference, IATE 2013 (International Association for Tourism Economics), the 2nd EBR Conference 2013 (Economic and Business Review), the 26th EALE Conference (European Association of Labour Econ-omists) and the International Conference China-CEE Cross-cultural Dialogue, Education & Learning.

DOCTORAL PROGRAMMESThe doctoral programme in Economics and Business is in tune with the most advanced forms of doctor-al study in the EU and around the world. The FELU actively participates in discussing issues related to the development of Ph.D. programmes in the EU and beyond.

Doctoral studies are organised in small groups of students and build from core research knowledge to many possibilities for specialisation. The programme is designed for those wanting to improve their re-search skills by gaining the latest scientific knowl-edge in the chosen field, deepening their skills in qualitative and quantitative analysis, and thus devel-oping the skills needed for conducting research at an internationally competitive level.

The FELU makes it a priority to promote research by young researchers/research fellows. The Slovenian Research Agency funds the postgraduate study and research training of young researchers employed at the FELU. In addition, the Slovenian Technology Agency subsidises the employment of young re-searchers from the corporate world. In 2013, the FELU had 23 young researchers, including five re-searchers from the corporate world.

FELU Assistant Professors Katarina Katja Mihelič, Ph.D. and Assistant Professor Barbara Culiberg, Ph.D. were awarded the SAGE Best Paper Award for the most significant contribution that advances leadership or organisation studies (Management Education & Development Division) for the article: Would you look the other way? An investigation of peer reporting among business school students. The article was presented on this years’ Academy of Management conference.

The FELU assistant Alenka Slavec, Ph.D. was selected as the winner of the European Doctoral Programmes Association in Management and Business Administration (EDAMBA) Thesis Competition for her doctoral thesis entitled: Entrepreneurial Openness: Construct Development and Empirical Testing. She was awarded the award at the EDAMBA Annual Meeting in York, UK in September 2014.

GREAT CORPORATE CONNECTIONSFor many years the FELU has cooperated with the business community in shaping the academic study process. The FELU includes the business community in several ways, such us: the FELU Advisory Board, guest speakers, guest participation in selecting the-sis topics, case studies & projects, conferences, on-site company visits etc.

The FELU has formalised many of its corporate connections through long-term partnership con-tracts. Overall, however, the decades of developing high-quality relationships with the business com-munity have resulted in strong social capital for the FELU which is revealed whenever the FELU needs support from the business community, e.g. in finding sponsors for events, recruiting guest lecturers, par-ticipating in research surveys etc.

By hosting experts from the business world during lectures, creating business and case studies com-missioned by companies, suggesting thesis topics (bachelor’s and master’s levels), organising student visits to individual companies etc., the FELU is bol-stering its connections with the business world.

In 2013/14, this interface with business included the following:

• 172 guest speakers from business and the professions;

• 61 lecturers, including experts who took part in the context of academies, seminars and workshops for middle and top management of lifelong learning, plus 15 foreign professors and 30 FELU professors;

• 17 company visits and excursions;

• 268 internships that were completed in Slovenia and 55 abroad.

In the last decade, the FELU has proven itself as one of the top event organisers in Slovenia. We organ-ise over 100 different events per year, from major in-ternational conferences (including more than 1,000 participants), to round tables, meetings, lectures and seminars. Our excellent organisational skills, broad network of experts from the academic and business worlds, and large selection of modern, well-equiped rooms are the benefits of organising an event at the FELU.

In 2013/14 we organised two larger conferences: BESTEN 2014 (Building Excellence in Sustainable Tourism Education Network) with 60 participants and EALE 2014 (European Association of Labour Economists) with 450 participants.

CONSULTING & APPLIED RESEARCHThe FELU Centre for Business Excellence (CBE) has a long tradition in consulting. The core faculty mem-bers’ expertise spans from strategy development and building effective organisations, business pro-cess reengineering to effective marketing and brand-ing, managing costs, managing risks etc.

SECURING FUNDS – THE FELU FOUNDATIONThe FELU Foundation’s finances and other resources provide scholarships for outstanding students from Slovenia and abroad, support visits by established in-ternational professors, and contribute in other ways to the excellence of the FELU.

STUDENT EXCHANGE PROGRAMMESThe FELU is involved in various exchange pro-grammes: Erasmus Student Mobility for Studies, Erasmus Student Internship, Erasmus Intensive Pro-gramme, Erasmus Multilateral Projects, Erasmus Mundus Partnerships, Erasmus Mundus Master Pro-gramme, ICI – ECP Korean double degree and mo-bility project, CEEPUS (Central European Exchange Programme for University Studies), EEA Grants Nor-way Grants, Bilateral Agreements. The FELU is also a partner in several research projects: Seventh Frame-work Programme (FP7), TEMPUS, INTERREG, EURE-KA, COST, Central Europe Programme, South East Europe and Transnational Cooperation Programme.

In 2013/14, the FELU hosted 337 incoming students, and sent out 248 outgoing students.

In 2012, the FELU became a coordinator of the Eras-mus Mundus partnership and mobility programme – EURO-ASIAN Cooperation for Excellence and Ad-vancement 1 (Euro-Asian CEA) for a four-year period. The Euro-Asian CEA 2 partnership was confirmed in 2013. The multidisciplinary consortiums consist of 20 partners, 9 from EU countries and 11 from Central Asia (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan).

In the Erasmus Mundus Action 2 – Partnerships pro-jects with mobility, the FELU is a partner in:

ACADEMIC AND STAFF EXCHANGESThe FELU faculty members have the opportunity to participate in different academic and staff exchange programmes, such as ERASMUS, the CEEPUS pro-gramme and others. Besides that, academic and professional staff members are developing their cross-cultural skills by participating in activities and seminars organised at the FELU. In addition, the Con-fucius Institute Ljubljana plays the role of promoting Chinese language and culture. INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCES The FELU regularly organises and hosts international business conferences and events. Selected interna-tional conferences in 2013/14: COBIK 2013, the Por-torož Business Conference, Business Hive 2014, the European Workshop on Applied Cultural Economics (EWACE 2013), FDI Summit 2013 etc.

THE CONFUCIUS INSTITUTE (CI LJUBLJANA)The CI Ljubljana operates on the FELU’s premises under the supervision of the Chinese state office for spreading the Chinese language in Beijing (the Hanban-Office of Chinese Language Council Inter-national). One of 420 CIs globally, the CI Ljubljana is one of just seven CIs in the world with a business orientation. The CI Ljubljana has established Chinese classes in primary schools in Ljubljana, Maribor and Kranj, where more than 600 Slovenian pupils are learning Chinese. The CI Ljubljana promotes Chinese language and culture and strengthens relations be-tween China and Slovenia.

Main highlights of the CI Ljubljana in 2013/14: Chinese language courses, seminars and workshops, Youth Summer Schools in Ljubljana and Novo mesto, Sum-mer Research camp in Idrija, Cooking workshop: Yin and Yang in Chinese cuisine, Hallerstein – A Slove-nian in the Forbidden City, Classical Chinese poetry and Butoh dance, Chinese Cultural Month, Chinese holiday celebrations (Dragon Boat Festival, Spring Festival, Lantern Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival etc.), Chinese Saturday hours for children, Business trip to China, 1st China – Central and Eastern Europe confer-ence on cross-cultural dialogue education and busi-ness etc.

THE FELU SUMMER SCHOOLSTHE LJUBLJANA SUMMER SCHOOL – TAKE THE BEST FROM EAST & WEST (3 WEEKS IN JULY)One of the FELU’s most successful internationalisa-tion activities is the Ljubljana Summer School – “Take the Best from East and West”, which was introduced in 2000. Over the course of three exciting and chal-lenging weeks, students attend classes, interact with companies, discover the local culture, and socialise with people from all around the world.

The Ljubljana Summer School 2014 hosted 472 par-ticipants from 37 countries. There were 25 courses available at the undergraduate and graduate level with 37 lecturers from 15 countries.

77 per cent of participants attended the undergrad-uate courses. The courses in greatest demand were: How to do Business with China, Corporate Finance, International Marketing Strategy, Tourism Manage-ment, Macroeconomics, Business Plan Development, Negotiation Techniques etc.

DOCTORAL SUMMER SCHOOLThe Doctoral Summer School offers the best teachers and specialised courses to complement the course-work doctoral students have engaged in during the regular programme of their Ph.D. training. The cours-es are designed so that they offer the most in a very concentrated form; all courses are offered within a week of intensive work.

EXECUTIVE SUMMER SCHOOL – THE PERSUASIVE CHANGE LEADER (14 – 18 JULY 2014)The international Executive Summer School “The Persuasive Change Leader” was developed to re-spond to a major challenge facing managers of or-ganisations today. The programme is led by Patrick C. Flood, Ph.D., professor of Organisational Behav-iour at Dublin City University, and John McMackin, a lecturer and consultant on change management, strategy and human resource management. The pro-gramme adopts a strong practitioner perspective and is highly interactive.

15 participants from middle to senior management positions of leading international and regional com-panies attended the FELU Executive Summer School.

DOUBLE SUMMER SCHOOL TOULOUSE – LJUBLJANA (16 JUNE – 25 JULY 2014)The Double Summer School is a joint programme between the Toulouse Business School, France and the FELU, Slovenia. It offers a unique opportunity for undergraduate students to spend some of their summer in two great locations in Southern and Cen-tral Europe: Toulouse, France and Ljubljana, Slovenia. Under the title “Think Multicultural & Create New Ex-periences”, students participated in a six-week pro-gramme and were able to earn up to 24 ECTS.

18 students from 8 countries attended the first Dou-ble Summer School.

SHANGHAI SUMMER SCHOOL – SUMMER SCHOOL OF CHINESE LANGUAGE AND CULTURE 2014 (13 JULY – 13 AUGUST 2014)The Shanghai Summer School was held in the busi-ness miracle city of China, Shanghai at the FELU’s partner university – Shanghai University of Interna-tional Business and Economics (SUIBE). The Summer School was based on language, business and culture. Students were able to meet and listen to lectures on various important themes conducted by experi-enced Chinese professors and representatives from well-established companies in China, and visited several Chinese companies. By participating in the Shanghai Summer School, students gained a deep-er understanding of the Chinese way of thinking and Chinese business practices.

THE FELU SHORT PROGRAMMESINTENSIVE PROGRAMME: »HOW THE CULTURAL BACKGROUND INFLUENCES SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY« (6 – 19 JULY 2014)The main purpose of the Intensive Programme (IP) Summer School ”How the Cultural Background In-fluences Social Responsibility” was to confront stu-dents with social responsibility issues and cultural differences and to raise awareness of how one’s cul-tural background influences social responsibility.

The IP Summer School is a two-week programme conducted in English. The programme was open to undergraduate and graduate students from five part-ner institutions, and was credited with 6 ECTS.

OUR FOCUS: QUALITYQUALITY ASSURANCE

A SOURCE OF QUALITYThe highest standards of quality are paramount to the FELU and accordingly the FELU is engaged in na-tional and international accreditation processes.

The FELU’s Quality Assurance provides support and assistance to staff, academic units, students and other stakeholders to incorporate quality into all of the FELU‘s activities. Through the assessment of the teaching and programmes, the FELU is developing and maintaining new programmes, modifying and reviewing existing programmes, curriculum changes, learning outcomes and ensuring the enhancement of quality in teaching, learning and research areas.

To name just a few of the quality assurance services provided to FELU staff:

• FELU professors are encouraged to teach, study and research abroad;

• FELU professors have the possibility to take sab-baticals and periods as a visiting professor;

• FELU professors are actively engaged in various forms of internationalisation (participation in ex-change programmes, members of editorial boards of international journals, reviewers for international journals etc.);

• FELU professors are able to take professional train-ing courses for teaching in international classes (for example, in cooperation with the British Council the Academic Teaching Excellence course was organ-ised in September 2014 etc.);

• FELU academic and professional staff have the op-portunity to participate in cross-cultural training programmes and attend various workshops for im-proving the quality of their teaching and/or profes-sional support.

• An external evaluation of written exams per-formed by professors from other higher education institutions;

• an evaluation of learning goals and objectives at the programme level through a series of steps ensuring a closed-loop assessment;

• Steering Committees’ monitoring of quality assurance at the programme level – members of the Steering Committees are the head of a pro-gramme, student representatives, and business community representatives;

• an annual review of the progression rates and study results of students in all programmes;

• employer evaluations of student internships and of the services provided by the Centre for Student and Career Services;

SUSTAINING SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY AND INTEGRITYWith knowledge, integrity and innovation the FELU creates and contributes to sustainable development.

The FELU aspires to develop ethically responsible students who respect their social and natural envi-ronments as reflected in the FELU’s mission, vision and values. The FELU’s Ethics Committee, a core part of the FELU’s integrity structure, is responsible for in-tegrity management and coordinating the initiatives of actors whose activities have an impact on the or-ganisational members’ integrity.

PRINCIPLES FOR RESPONSIBLE MANAGEMENTThe FELU has committed itself to the Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) and the Six Principles advocated by the United Nations’ Responsible Management Education initiative. The PRME promote responsible management educa-tion and thought leadership. The primary objective is to develop a new generation of business leaders capable of managing the complex challenges faced by business and society in the 21st century. In Sep-tember 2013, we participated in the PRME Summit – the 5th Annual Assembly, which was held in Bled, Slovenia.

CODE OF ETHICSIn line with the FELU’s mission of creating and dis-seminating knowledge, the FELU implements a Code of Ethics. It is aimed at guiding the behaviour of the FELU academic community. The Code of Ethics is a moral contract between members of the academic community that promotes integration and coopera-tion, and strengthens the FELU’s reputation.

CORPORATE INTEGRITY GUIDELINESThe four partner institutions – the Chamber of Com-merce and Industry of Slovenia (CCIS), the Managers’ Association of Slovenia, the Slovenian Directors’ As-sociation (SDA) and the Faculty of Economics, Uni-versity of Ljubljana (FELU) – publicly presented the document Corporate Integrity Guidelines in order to provide guidance and guidelines for companies that want to establish business in accordance with the Good Practice Guidance on Internal Controls, Ethics and Compliance.

CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY COMMUNICATIONThe FELU’s faculty members are important opin-ion-makers and their professional relevance is re-flected in the positive publicity they generate. Pro-fessors regularly publish articles or present their professional positions, commentaries and opinions in the media.

In order to foster sustainable growth, the FELU em-braces the concept of sustainability as its identity in its interaction with all stakeholders (students, em-ployees, business partners, society). This is shown by the efficient and creative use of all possible re-sources. The FELU promotes debates, international meetings, conferences, lectures and forums in order to enhance awareness of social responsibility. For ex-ample, a dialogue with students takes place through

the monthly newsletter featuring a section on sus-tainability, and through the FELU’s “Corporate Social Responsibility” webpage, as well as by partnering with companies that promote corporate responsibil-ity. The FELU’s academic community serves the val-ues of integrity, cooperation, responsibility, knowl-edge and academic freedom through projects and website Our values.

SUSTAINING GREENThe FELU recently implemented improvements in its environment sustainability through the initiative “re.misli” in collaboration with the company si.mobil. The initiative encourages environmentally-friendly changes including reductions in water consumption, electricity use and paper waste.

SOLAR POWER PLANTThe FELU was the first higher education institution in Slovenia to have an energy efficiency expertise for system improvements and optimisations, and the first institution to have adopted its own Travel Plan to improve the school’s accessibility and promote more sustainable travel choices among its students and employees.

The investment provides the FELU with estimated heat savings of [872 MWh/year] and electricity savings of [305 MWh/year].

Finalists of the 1st European CSR Award Scheme that focuses on successful partnerships between enter-prises and non-business stakeholders.

Roundtable – Detection and Prosecution of Econom-ic Fraud: “Creating a better future path”.

Preventing corporate fraud and corruption in busi-ness environments – with this conference, the FELU, together with its partners the Commission for the Prevention of Corruption, the Office of the State Prosecutor General of the Republic of Slovenia, and the Faculty of Criminal Justice and Security, Univer-sity of Maribor commemorated the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC) on Interna-tional Anti-Corruption Day.

The Chamber of Commerce and Industry Slovenia (CCIS), Managers Association of Slovenia, Slovenian Direcors’ Association (SDA) and the FELU presented Corporate Integrity Guidelines. The document is im-portant because it provides examples of good practic-es for companies that want to establish a value-based business.

THE FELU CAMPUSThe FELU campus is located in the northern part of the capital city of Slovenia, Ljubljana and is easily ac-cessible by car or public transport (city bus lines).

THE FELU’S MAIN CAMPUS FACILITIESThe FELU’s main campus facilities are well-equipped, maintained and adjusted to suit the needs of peo-ple with disabilities (e.g. sliding doors, ramps etc.). There are four big lecture halls, 46 classrooms, eight computer rooms – six of which are used for teaching purposes, while the other two provide FELU students with free access to computer equipment. Moreover, the well-maintained grounds give the FELU campus its own character and feel.

To support the use of contemporary teaching and learning methods, all teaching halls and classrooms are equipped with multimedia equipment. In addi-tion, the FELU has a campus-wide IT infrastructure and computer network that connects 740 comput-ers that are used by the faculty, staff and students. There are over 120 computers in the computer rooms, more than 50 computers in the lecture rooms which are used in the teaching process, more than 30 computers in the Central Economics Library (CEK) and another 80 computers that are freely accessi-ble to students (most of them during the library’s opening hours). The FELU also built multifunctional study room, and a new computer lab. A new firewall system and policy ensuring greater security were established.

All computers have Internet access and are equipped with all software relevant to the teaching process. The FELU provides free wireless access to students with their own equipment (laptops or handheld com-puters) throughout the campus.

THE FELU ABROADApart from the main campus in Ljubljana (Slovenia), the FELU operates in Prishtina (Kosovo), and in Skop-je (Macedonia).

In Prishtina, the FELU’s facilities include three class-rooms with all necessary equipment, one computer room, and a small open-access library. In Skopje, lectures are held on the premises of the Skopje Fair with one Diplomatic Hall and a computer room. Both classrooms are equipped with an LCD and a microphone system. One classroom is fitted with multimedia equipment.

CENTRAL ECONOMICS LIBRARY (CEK) The Central Economics Library (CEK) is the leading and largest scientific and academic library for busi-ness and economics studies in Slovenia. It is an active member of the COBISS national library and informa-tion system and the COSEC national library consor-tium. CEK supports the needs of faculty members, students and researchers and is available to anyone who may find it useful.

Ivan Kanič, Head of the CEK: “The CEK’s resources are comparable to those of the very best economics faculties.”

The FELU has invested a lot in assuring web access to a well-balanced selection of important databases and e-journals. In addition, the library maintains an extensive and efficient inter-library loan and docu-ment supply service with a number of prominent academic libraries on the national and internation-al level. In order to facilitate efficient and adequate information on European integration processes, the library includes a special department, the European Documentation Centre (EDC), which was co-found-ed as part of a national research project.

PUBLISHINGThe FELU has a long tradition of publishing scientific and professional publications, university textbooks, and professional monographs in both Slovenian and English. The FELU is also home of the Economic and Business Review journal. In 2013 the first success-ful monograph in the Slovenian language Napredni management (Advanced Management) was pub-lished in the “Maksima” book series. In 2014, in the same book series the FELU published a Slovenian book “Zgodovinski primeri kot zgledi za današn-je mednarodno poslovanje” (Historical examples as role models for today’s international business). The book is particularly valuable because it describes historical views and patterns of modern international business from the time of the Phoenicians onwards.

ART ENTHUSIASTS – THE FELU ART GALLERYThe FELU strives to provide a cultural experience for the students, faculty members and visitors that en-courage openness and new ways of seeing and think-ing. Therefore, the FELU Art Gallery is a space re-served for creative, innovative and abstract thought.

Altogether, the FELU has hosted over 130 exhibitions, many of which featured young Slovenian artists: painters, sculptors, photographers, illustrators and ceramicists.
