1. INTRODUCTION AND WELCOME BY THE DEAN OF THE FACULTY

Greetings and warm welcome to the Faculty of Commerce and Administration! First year students, returning students, new staff

members and returning staff of the Mthatha Campus, you are part of history, as Walter Sisulu University (WSU) embraces the

Divisional Model. Let us take this opportunity of working together for the benefit of our community, our province and our

country. The Faculty has a tradition of producing professionals for the business world. Some of the finest and accomplished

minds were nurtured and moulded in this Faculty. That tradition is consistent with the Faculty’s vision of excelling in the

empowerment of those who join us to study here. Students who successfully complete their studies, leave well-equipped to face

the dynamic business environment in their chosen disciplines. This Faculty does not only impart relevant, quality and

appropriate knowledge to its students, but it also inculcates in them a notion of life-long learning because of the dynamics and

challenges in the business world.

2015 had many changes in leadership positions in the Faculty, a Dean was appointed and Head of Departments would have

been finalized. We have overcome these hurdles and ended the year successfully. We have been joined by senior staff,

especially in the Department of Accounting, where there are eight members with CAs. Many staff members are also pursuing

higher degrees. We are indeed proud of Dr N B Makiwane, who graduated with a Doctorate in Public Administration. The

appointment of Professor S Balkaran, in the Department of Public Administration, has also boasted the Faculty. The

appointment of the Dean, Dr S Rajkaran, from within the Department of Business Management can also be recognised as a

milestone. Without a doubt, our flagship programme is the South African Institute for Chartered Accountants (SAICA) –

Chartered Accountants stream in the Department of Accounting. My vision for the staff would be to continue to strive for higher

degrees and more importantly to improve their research output especially in the form of articles in accredited journals. Staff and

Departments should work collaboratively to improve their research outputs. These efforts would be boosted by the accreditation

and registration soon, of the Master of Commerce and Master of Public Administration as we have been given the go-ahead by

the Department of Higher Education and Training.

Good luck in 2016!

Without our students, we are nothing. In 2015 our students have showed much promise. We are expecting a good number to

complete their studies and to graduate. Their sincere eagerness to study and excel is a hallmark of our students. I sincerely

admire their attempts when they do not succeed the first time. They are ready to put their shoulders to the wheel the next time

around. They are taking advantage of student programmes such as Peer Assistant (PALL) and mentorships. Many of them are

also involved in various extra-curricular activities, making not only the Faculty, but also the University proud. We have noted

with pride that our throughput rates, success rates and graduation rates are steadily improving. I envision a time when most of

our students will complete their programmes in the prescribed time.

Attending all lectures and completing assessment tasks timeously will assist you in completing your programmes timeously.
