New Religious Movements

All religions were once new, small, and unusual to the cultures around them - often therefore attracting suspicion. This course examines the practices, beliefs, and histories of several NRMs, and why some gain legitimacy while others get derided as "cults." Doing so illuminates broader processes like mythmaking, Othering, and (de)secularization.

Minor Modifications Requiring Senate Approval Change to program name

Minor Modifications: Description of Existing Program, Nature of the Minor Modification, and Rationale

for Proposed Change

Briefly summarize (suggested 1-page maximum) the existing program to be modified, the nature of the proposed minor

modification, and the rationale for the modification. Comment on the impact it will have on the structure, Degree Level

Expectations, and learning outcomes of the existing program(s) as appropriate. Explain (as appropriate) how the relevant

stakeholders (e.g. faculty, staff, students) were consulted in preparing the proposal; and comment on additional resources

required to implement the program modification.

Jointly offered by the Department of Film and Media and the Dan School of Drama and Music, the Stage and

Screen Specialization (STSC) was intended for students “interested in exploring realms of film and drama,

drawing together the lessons to be learned in each field” (Film and Media CPR 2014). It offers instruction in

the theoretical, historical and practical dimensions of work in the two art forms. By combining selected courses

from the two units along with several dedicated STSC-coded courses, the plan provides an opportunity to study

the interrelations of these arts in contemporary society. Over the last fifteen years or so, the plan has seen the

ingress of between 8 to 15 students per year.

Since the inception of the STSC plan, the two host units have undergone significant changes. The expansion of

media studies course offerings by the former Department of Film (becoming the Department of Film and Media

in 2007) and the merger of the School of Music with the Department of Drama (becoming the Dan School of

Drama and Music in 2016) have invited reconsideration of this specialization. After a lengthy and in-depth

revisioning process, the two units are proposing the renaming of the Stage and Screen Studies plan to Media

and Performance Production (MAPP). This new, more expansive title reflects the centrality of mediatization

referring to recorded art works like film and video production but also to the intermedial integration of “media”

into live arts. The word ‘media’ invites reflection on the materiality of the medium of creation and transmission

of all art works and the role of new digital technologies in that work. The word ‘performance’ goes well beyond

the stage; it more accurately captures a wider range of embodied action, encompassing dramatic storytelling

both live and recorded, but also music, and performance studies. Finally, the word ‘production’ emphasizes the

pre-eminence of practical methodology that has always been a part of the STSC plan. Students in this plan will

still explore theoretical ideas through praxis. Hands-on ‘making’ will continue to be featured at the core of the

MAPP plan.

Following an initial “temperature-taking” town hall that involved students at all stages of the plan, staff and

faculty in spring of 2016, a core group of faculty and staff undertook an intensive revisioning process to

reconceptualize a revitalized and refocused MAPP plan, commencing in the fall of 2017. The group began from

first principles with existing program level learning outcomes. These initial outcomes were refined in light of

the slightly changed focus, articulated by the name change. From this list, the group performed a curriculum

mapping exercise where these new MAPP learning outcomes were applied to existing courses in DRAM,

ENIN, FILM, MUSC, and MUTH. From that process, gaps were revealed where certain learning outcomes

were not yet manifest. Out of these gaps, the group developed outlines for several new courses that constitute

the MAPP core or spine (MAPP200/3.0, MAPP300/3.0, MAPP400/3.0). Next, the group sorted the identified

relevant courses into a plan structure based on principal areas of concentration. Finally, preliminary syllabi

were developed collectively for the new core courses. Once the proposal was mostly complete it was presented

to and approved by the curriculum committees (which feature student representation) and committees of the

whole of both units. The intention of this process which rebuilds the plan from the ground up was to stay

focused on core principals and to develop a coherent and focused experience for MAPP students.

In addition to the name change from STSC to MAPP, there will be an accompanying re-organization of the

plan requirements, the recoding of existing STSC and IDIS courses as MAPP courses, and the creation of the

three courses of the MAPP spine. Although these changes may seem extensive on the surface, ultimately they

remain faithful to the original mission and learning outcomes of the STSC plan. When comparing the new

MAPP plan with the current STSC plan, it is evident that a student could take the same courses prescribed by

the STSC plan and successfully complete the MAPP plan requirements.

To summarize, the modifications being proposed here are 1) a more accurately descriptive plan name, 2) a

clearly integrated core/spine that encourages student progression from year to year, and 3) a more

expansive menu of option courses (particularly through the addition of Music courses).

Program level learning outcomes

Upon completion of this program, students will…

[KNOWLEDGE OUTCOMES]

… demonstrate and apply a basic standard of digital literacy.

… recognize and assess impacts of technology on both historical and contemporary culture.

… recognize patterns connecting technological innovation to artistic / aesthetic innovation across cultures.

… identify and evaluate the impact of significant moments and trends in the history of media.

… analyse dramaturgical (narrative/compositional) structures and mechanics.

… demonstrate knowledge of production processes in live theatre and performance, film and video, and

music/sound.

… demonstrate knowledge of the business (financial, legal, policy) of media and performance production.

[SKILLS OUTCOMES]

… apply dramaturgical (narrative/compositional) principles across media platforms.

… apply basic principles in sound/music creation/generation in performative contexts across media platforms.

… apply principles in visual design/effects in performative contexts across media platforms.

… demonstrate competency in the use of theatre/live performance production technology.

… demonstrate competency in the use of film/video/digital meda production technology.

… analyse relationships between audience-receivers and performance artifacts/events.

… identify and apply key principles of site-specific media and performance.

… recognize and apply key features of and create artwork in cross-disciplinary interconnections of live and

mediatized performance.

[GENERIC SKILLS]

… apply effective communication skills in written, oral/aural, visual, and embodied/gestural forms.

… identify and apply inquiry-based skills to the creation of media/performance-as-research projects.

… demonstrate strong teamwork skills.

…demonstrate self-regulation and learning how to learn.

[VALUES]

… respond positively to various kinds of change by being adaptable and nimble.

… be bold and embrace artistic innovation and intellectual risk.

Upon completing the curriculum mapping exercise, two insights became clear to the MAPP steering group.

First, that although many of thse outcomes were already being effectively covered by the existing STSC plan,

there were many more courses (especially newly-created or newly-available courses like MUSC) that could be

incorporated as options into the new plan. Second, that outcomes which specifically address integration,

combination, and interconnection of live and recorded art works in theory and practice needed to be addressed

in new courses. These new courses constitute the spine of the MAPP plan.

Additionally, some existing courses will be recoded as MAPP:

IDIS 311/3.0 Sound Production will continue as is but as MAPP 311/3.0

IDIS 410/3.0: Contemporary Cultural Performance in Practice, is the current STSC ‘capstone’ course.

MAPP 400/6.0 is a recalibrated version of IDIS 410/3.0 and will be exclusions to one another.

STSC 339/3.0: Media and Performance will be discontinued and recalibrated to become MAPP 300/3.0

The other STSC courses (STSC 300/3.0, STSC 309/3.0, STSC 381/3.0) will be deleted.

Part B – Evaluation Criteria

Minor Modification: Change to Program Name

Information required: Describe the nature of and rationale for the proposed modification, and the impact on current and

future students.

As outlined above the proposed changes in the transposition from the current STSC specialization to the new

MAPP specialization involve changing the name of the plan, introducing a modified plan structure, and adding

three new courses that constitute the integrated spine of the plan. These modification arise consequently from

significant changes in the composition and ‘personality’ of the two host units—the Department of Film and

Media and the Dan School of Drama and Music.

The new plan is more expansive in its offerings and more coherently calibrated towards the learning outcomes of

the program. Despite these not-insignificant changes, negative impact on current and future students will be

negligible. A head-to-head comparison of the old and new plans shows that a student could take exactly the

same courses as before and still complete the requirements for the STSC/MAPP specialization. Positive impact

on students is marked as the new plan provides a shared experience and integration of live and recorded media in

the core spine courses as well as opening up a greater diversity of offerings with the inclusion of music option

courses.

Academic Orientation Committee Report – 2018 January2018

APPENDIX D ACADEMIC ORIENTATION COMMITTEE

REPORT TO FACULTY BOARD ON ORIENTATION 2018: JANUARY 2019

Introduction This is a report of the Academic Orientation Committee (AOC) on the events for Orientation Week 2018. In April 2018 a report was presented to Faculty Board highlighting orientation planning. The Nature of Orientation Orientation at Queen’s is a complex academic, social and logistical project. The Academic Orientation Committee (AOC), consisting of faculty, staff, and students, oversees Orientation events whose educational focus aligns with the Faculty of Arts and Science’s interest in ensuring academic success. The main goals of Orientation are: • To make all new students feel welcome; • To facilitate a smooth transition to university; • To build a strong and inclusive community of students; • To make new students comfortable in their academic, social and environmental contexts; • To provide a solid foundation for a successful university experience. The Office of the Associate Dean of Studies supports Orientation, and the Academic Orientation Committee is a standing committee of Faculty Board includes representatives from four student societies:

• Ellie MacLennan, Academic Chair for the Arts and Science Undergraduate Society (ASUS)

• Alexa Irvine, Academic Chair for the Concurrent Education Student Association (CESA)

• Max Keleher, Academic Chair for the Computing Students Association (COMPSA) • Tarrah Ethier, Academic Chair for the Physical Education and Kinesiology Student

Association (PHEKSA) Student members of the AOC are responsible for the academic events organized by their respective societies in Orientation Week. In turn, they work with Orientation Committees (OCs) who develop the events. The OCs supervise students who are selected in a competitive process (hired) to run the events and to guide groups of first-year students through Orientation. These students are known as Gaels (ASUS), Teaches (CESA), Techs (COMPSA) and Coaches (PHEKSA).

Academic Orientation Committee Report – 2018 January2018

Faculty, staff and student members of the AOC Committee:

• Jan Mennell, Chair • Johanne Bénard, Associate Dean of Studies, Arts and Science (Dean’s Delegate) • Spring Forsberg-Lewis (Resource Person and Recording Secretary) • Brooke Cameron, English (Faculty member) • Bahman Gharesifard (Math & Stat Dept) • Stephanie Lind, Music (Faculty member) • Allison Leverette, Psychology (Staff representative) (on leave) • TBD (Student at Large member) • Jasmine Lagundzija, President ASUS (Ex officio) - out going • Sagal Sharma, New President ASUS (Ex officio)

Orientation 2018 The Orientation Week 2018 was, overall, successful. Orientation leaders demonstrated their commitment to excellence by responding to feedback from Orientation 2017. Academic events were well planned and well organized. For their part, first-year students were engaged in most of the activities they attended. This year, all groups added inclusivity to their program. Some of the changes for Orientation 2018 included: ASUS: • In order to address the early start to orientation week, the Prof Talk event was merged with

the Academic Success 101 event. The Prof Talk portion of consisted of a panel covering similar material to previous Prof Talk sessions.

• The How Do You Feel event focused on recognizing and navigating academics and social stress, alcohol balance, self-care and recognizing the need professional help, how and where to obtain help and sexual health and wellness.

• Handbook Activities included a new electronic format mobile app. Content included a compilation of academic and campus support information, tips from upper year students and resources on campus in an entertaining and informal formation. Each day of Orientation there were pre-determined themes and learning objectives that the leaders were expected to show their frosh. Second, a handbook for first years was provided and consisted of tips and tricks from upper years as well as campus resources. It also included anecdotal situations and solutions to potential circumstances a first-year student might encounter. This new initiative was designed to extend beyond Orientation Week, so students would have online access to this information.

COMPSA: • This is the first year COMPSA has held their own Taming & Traditions event.

Academic Orientation Committee Report – 2018 December 2018 4

Looking Ahead To 2019 The timely submission of event approval forms continues to be a concern as forms are often submitted in the days leading into orientation. This does not allow the Dean or Dean’s designate adequate time to review, ask questions or suggest changes. It is also important to ensure substantive last-minute changes to events are approved by the Associate Dean (Studies). Respectfully submitted, Jan Mennell, Chair Academic Orientation Committee January 2019
