FOREWORDAustralians can be proud of their generous nature in times of adversity.This year in particular I have been heartened by the overwhelmingreaction from Australian businesses that have responded generouslyin times of community crisis, providing assistance both at local andinternational levels.

Workplace Giving Australia provides businesses with the informationand tools to extend that goodwill, and is one way that businesses,community organisations and the Government can work together to make our communities stronger.

Workplace Giving Australia has been developed as an initiative of the Prime Minister’s Community Business Partnership.

The Partnership is a group of business and community leaders whoadvise the Government on issues such as corporate socialresponsibility, community business partnerships and philanthropy. As Deputy Chair of the Partnership, I strongly support this initiative,which aims to increase levels of giving in Australia.

Workplace Giving Australia provides employers with access to tools to support employee engagement in the community, whilecontributing to employee morale and mobilising significant funding for community benefit.

Businesses play a vital role with the Howard Government in buildingstronger families and communities.

WORKPLACE GIVINGWorkplace giving is a simple and effective wayfor your staff to regularly donate to charitableorganisations through automated payrolldeductions. It allows employees theopportunity to make regular donations throughtheir pay and provides ‘time-poor’ people witha way to support their community.

Workplace giving is a voluntary programme that(under a pre-tax system) results in an automatictax deduction for your employees, without theneed for them to keep and claim receipts.

Employees pledge a nominated amount to an organisation with deductible gift recipientstatus (DGR status)* and the donation isautomatically deducted from their pay and sent to the organisation.

In Australia, hundreds of businesses alreadyoperate a workplace giving programme, helping to bring a strong sense of community into theworkplace.

Through workplace giving, businesses canbuild reputation and profile in the communityto become an ‘employer of choice’. Workplacegiving is a simple way to enhance your business’involvement in the community, with clearbusiness, employee and community benefits.

* A deductible gift recipient (DGR) is a charity or otherorganisation that is approved by the Australian Taxation Officeas entitled to receive tax deductible donations. Not all charitiesare DGRs and a great variety of organisations, for examplelibraries, universities, etc, can be DGRs. You can check anorganisation’s DGR status via the Australian Business Registerat www.abr.gov.au

Case study‘Our business is making a difference…’

The Sydney Opera House has significantlycontributed to the community through thearts for over 30 years, however morerecently they have begun contributing in a different way.

At the end of 2004, the Opera Houselaunched a workplace giving programme. The programme offers their 600 employees the opportunity to make regular donationsto community groups through automatedpayroll deductions.

“We believe establishing a workplacegiving programme is an effective and easy way for our company to contribute to the community.

“We already have a good reputation withinour community, but we see workplacegiving as another way to demonstrate ourcommunity commitment.”

Staff can participate by donating to fouridentified community groups, or they can forward the details of a personalfavourite organisation they want to support to payroll.

Already donations have contributed toproviding counselling and care for familieswith sick children, scholarships for youngpeople, support groups for women affectedby domestic violence and assistance forcountries affected by the tsunami.

Giving is encouraged at Bain, with theiremployees often taking the time to usetheir professional skills to work within the community sector. That is why theintroduction of a workplace givingprogramme made sense – building on the existing community spirit within their business.

Since launching their programme in 1999,Bain has achieved an impressiveparticipation rate of over 60 per cent oftheir 100 employees. Bain believes thattheir employees take pride in the fact thattheir organisation is showing leadership,proving that medium sized companies can also make big differences to thecommunity.

“Almost half a million dollars has beendonated by our employees since welaunched our giving programme. A regulardonation really builds into something that makes a significant difference for the community.

“Our staff has been motivated not only by the immediate tax benefits of theprogramme, but more importantly thesignificant impact they know they aremaking on the community.”

If just 10 per cent of theAustralian workforcedonated $5 a week fromtheir pay through workplace giving, an extra $250 million per year would be raised for our communities.*

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS FORYOUR EMPLOYEES?Millions of Australians donate to numerousgroups at various times of the year and manyhave a preferred community organisation towhich they donate. A workplace givingprogramme is an easy and convenient way foremployees to pledge a nominated amount to a deductible gift recipient (DGR)* on a regularbasis. The amount is deducted on payday andsent to the selected organisation.

Donating through workplace giving provides an opportunity for your employees to:

◗ receive a tax deduction without the need to keep receipts for tax purposes;

◗ receive an immediate tax benefit from their weekly, fortnightly or monthly wage.For example, assuming an employee is on a 48.5 per cent tax rate, if the employee gives$10 it costs him or her $5.15 (operatingunder a pre-tax workplace giving system);

◗ make a donation decision privately – without pressure from fundraisers. It is up to the individual to decide how much theywish to donate and to which organisation;

◗ know that the donation is received atminimal cost by the community organisation– less money is spent on fundraising andmore can be used for the actual cause;

◗ make an important contribution to thecommunity; and

◗ make a connection with the community,which could lead to further involvementthrough volunteering or social activities.

Additionally employees only have to make oneinitial decision to donate through workplacegiving – once a donation has been set up thereis nothing else for the employee to do and their donation can continue until they wish to make a change.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS TOCOMMUNITY ORGANISATIONS?Financial assistance is vital to the ongoing workof community organisations. Workplace givingfunding enables community organisations tobetter plan activities, goals and budgets basedon a regular flow of income. This means thatgreater community outcomes can be achieved.Funding from workplace giving programmesallows community organisations to:

◗ receive regular, stable and on-going funding;

◗ receive donations as a lump sum from anemployer, reducing processing andadministration costs;

◗ potentially reduce expensive fundraisingactivities;

◗ make business connections providing anopportunity to highlight their work; and

◗ achieve greater community outcomes, domore ‘good work’ and help more people.

Community organisations also often find long-term donors through workplace giving –employees who are passionate about aparticular cause often give to an organisationfor many years through a payroll deductionsystem. These individuals alone can (across a number of years) achieve significantoutcomes for the community.

Case studyCaliburn (independent corporate advisors)have 28 employees, and 21 participating in their workplace giving programme. Their giving programme was established in 2002 and since inception this team hasmanaged to raise $137,506 for sixcommunity organisations.

Since 2002, Caliburn has contributed to anumber of projects including assisting fourHSC students complete their study, a foodsecurity programme in East Timor, an earlyintervention programme for at risk youngpeople, a food kitchen for homeless peoplein the city and a youth centre. The staff arepassionate about these achievements asthey choose the organisations to support.

When asked about their high participationrate Caliburn says;

“I suspect that as we all have such busylives we tend to feel we want to dosomething for others. Workplace giving just makes that so simple to do.”

Caliburn has taken the extra step ofintroducing employer matching, providingan added incentive for their staff to donatethrough workplace giving, and doubling the outcomes for the communityorganisations they support.

“The founders of our company activelysupport the programme. I think that sets agood example and really highlights theprogramme as something that is centrallyimportant to Caliburn, we even feature theprogramme in our Annual Review to clients.”

Mercer Human Resource Consultingestablished a ‘Contributing to ourCommunity Committee’ to coordinate their community activities. One of the major activities of ‘Contributing to ourCommunity’ is their annual communitygiving month.

“We set aside one month a year tohighlight our community work and duringthis time approach all our employees andinvite them to become engaged. We try to provide a number of ways for employeesto become involved including blooddonation drives, food drives, volunteerdays and of course our ongoing workplacegiving programme.”
